When Young Kids Do Hard Time is a fully produced prison documentary featuring the stories of young kids sentenced to adult prison. Elsewhere on our channel viewers have seen interviews with brothers Blade and Bennie Reed. What people haven't seen is the fully produced documentary on their story, along with a few others featured in this film, When Young Kids Do Hard Time. Throughout the film, viewers get a look at what life is like for young kids who have been sentenced to the adult prison system. In the prison featured in this documentary, Wabash Valley Correctional Facility, all youth under the age of 18 are housed in the Youth Incarcerated as Adults cellblock (YIA). But once a youth turns 18, they are immediately transferred to the adult prison population, either at Wabash or one of the state's other adult prisons.
Stories also include kids who are serving time in the adult prison Segregation cellblock after getting in fights in the YIA cellblock, and interviews with adult prisoners who are serving life sentences who talk about what's still ahead for kids who are staring down decades behind bars.
Note; Blade and Bennie Reed are still incarcerated. Blade was charged with possession of a dangerous device/material which added 2 additional years to his sentence. His projected release date is 2027. Bennie's released date is currently set for 2037.
Adam Contreras was returned to court authority upon release in 2020.
Demonae Lewis was released from prison but rearrested and sentenced to 50 years in prison in 2018 for attempted murder and unlawful firearm possession by a serious felon. His projected release date is 2063.

I was sentenced to 49yrs to life when I was 17. I did 24yrs in adult prison in California. I got out July 2021. Prison changes you., you either learn or get worse. But I do believe most kids that go to prison and spend decades behind them walls are much more mature mentally then your average prisoner. I’m enjoying my life, I love my freedom and enjoy the simple things in life.
Stay positive! Glad you're out and doing well:)
Welcome home brother 🙏
Glad you’re doing well , would love to hear more of you’re story
10 yrs at this place ....suoermax to 4 side back and forth young n wild u already kmow..ya change is real I do real good now ....u have to want it
The system is disproportionately punitive. A 17 year old needs support and guidance, not a 50 year sentence. Anyway, good luck for the future.
Every kid needs a positive And responsible adult in their life
That's not what the party in power thru cheating in this country thinks

I almost felt sorry for the brothers.. until I found out they killed an 87 year old man and slit his wife's throat. They went into someone's home, armed with a gun. I can't sympathize with that. A tough childhood does not warrant murder.
yeah feel bad for the kid tho he was 13 at the time
@@krookedworld oof.. thats touchy. I'd like to think at 13 you know what you're doing. But then again. Only 13... shits sad
I had a tough upbringing and I would like to say I turned out an incredibly empathetic caring person who now works in a Carehome. I’ve never felt the need to do any crimes, it’s their choice they did that and because of that, they pay the consequences
34:30 are they smirking about what they did?
10 year developmentally is plenty old enough to know right from wrong. The youngest in my family at the moment is 2, the next is 7 and a few months. The next is almost 8, if I asked them what would happen if someone ‘cut’ someone’s neck like he did, they would say without having to think “they will di*” I’ve taught thousands of children who have had some awful lives, they still knew right from wrong. In schools children walk around with scissors held safely, they don’t walk around with the blades pointing out. Children know sharp things cause harm.
I was in Johnson county juvenile with the younger brother him and his brother think it's cool what they did for whoever reads this just know that the entire E POD gave him an extremely awful time while he was with us till they moved him to another pod I hope he gets the same or worse in Wabash
The way he called her granny and she said I wish you all the best luck in the world wow that broke me
this is what happens when you scroll on RUclips and now I've ended up here 😂😂😂😂
What's sad is that these kids aren't stupid. They are well spoken, and they have decent heads on their shoulders, at the very least. At the end of the day, it all comes down to who you surround yourself with. They are young enough to understand the impact that these choices will have on their life long-term, thankfully. I hope they learn from their actions and return to society as changed individuals.
Man did you don't understand there life is over if ? If? They get out one will be 70 another almost 50 years old with class a aggravated felony on their record. that mean very limited chance to get job rent a house etc .

They are a product of their environment :( these kids need love and good homes.
Kids that age can understand the impact of what they do on a superficial level but not on a deep level e.g. lasting anguish or affected family members etc.

How sad that the older brother allowed his younger brother to commit such a horrible crime, cutting the throat of an 84 yr old woman while he shot her husband.
I guess there are two different aspects to prison punishment: One is to punish the offender, the second is to keep society safe from them. And I am sorry to say that I would not want murderers near me or my family and friends. 🤔
We live in a sick world
1 murder the other other didn't she survived and to be honest they wanted beer and the old guy shot him was he ment to take another bullet? Without retaliating if anything you blame the country for having firearms in houses this could have ended with losing a beer instead of shooting a kid the the kid reflex back to shooting the old guy the wife cut throat is bad but he was 13 and 30 years. adults who rape and beat the shit out of there wife's don't even get 30 years @@chatita9527

FINALLY A WELL THOUGHT INTELLIGENT COMMENT!!!
If Blade gets with the wrong people and gets no help while in prison I can invison him being a monster and never getting out
Good
He will definitely be a target for sex offenders when he goes to adult prison. He's in for a big shock. 😮
So sad, my brother was locked up at thirteen and was transferred to adult prison when he turned old enough, where he spent another few years. He got out a couple times but his freedom didn't last forever. He went on the run and was facing over 15 years. Well they found him overdosed a couple weeks ago.. I just feel like a lot of these kids never really had a chance
@Insightful Entertainment - wow, that is such a sad, sad story. So sorry to hear about your brother. Being locked up at 13 is, in itself, a terrible policy. Kids at that age are far too young to be thrown into that world and be expected to emerge better off. Research proves it. We firmly believe there are much more effective ways to treat kids who have committed offenses than simply throwing them behind bars. We've also learned a lot from the family members of crime victims, many of whom advocate for a different approach when it comes to juvenile subjects. Really appreciate you taking the time to post such a personal comment. It's only by sharing stories like this that people begin to understand the depths of these issues.
@@CalamariProductions thank you
So sorry to hear that!
Blade looks like the Artful Dodger. Cute kid.
stay strong brother 🙏🏾
i feel more sympathy for blade than i do his brother. it was terrible what the brothers did and i'm not trying to make excuses, but the trauma that led to his age regression must have been terrible to live through, and with a drunk brother with irrational thoughts and used his trauma response for his own gain. man that's terrible. i hope when he gets out he finds a proper life for himself, filled with people who don't take advantage of him for acting so much younger by no fault of his own.
They were both kids, stop it, both went through the system and abuse, just because one looks more vulnerable than the other you choose no compassion? All you people on here are conditional with everything, what a great example to these kids today!

The grown men in prison act the same as these young kids. Most everyone in there never grown up. They're all like rebellious teens
This is true. They not only did not grow up, they still do not repent for their horrendous crimes they committed and they show no empathy or sadness and sorrow for the suffering they caused their victims.
Don’t agree with prosecuting children as adults period. If a 12 year old commits murder then the adults taking care of them/educating them/protecting them have failed in their responsibility. Where are their prison sentences? All kids have a warped view of reality, and that’s why we don’t let them, vote, drive, have sex etc. The only reason this didn’t happen to you or me is because we had solid adults in our lives.
I know we all have choices & repercussions but man...

I was 16 when I placed in a high security prison in Oklahoma called osp or big Mac... I fell through a loop hole in the system. I was supposed to go into a boot camp but due to my high flight risk they placed me in the walls... I spent almost a year before my lawyer found me and got me transferred out... it's really hard on a young person to be in a place like that... we all make mistakes and shouldn't suffer forever for it... God knows those who are truly sorry...
@benjimandover8072 - Really appreciate you posting your own personal story. You are right -- it can take a long time to see legal movement once you're in the system. A lot of young people don't have lawyers and languish even more. It's a tough place, that's for sure. Thanks again for sharing your story and taking the time to be here with us on our channel.
Did you change? I have a different thought. Suffer for our mistakes and we are less likely to repeat them. You must have done something pretty serious to get prison time. Hope you learned from it.🙏
My brother just got out of prison on a 20 year charge. He was in there since I was 5. I’m 25 now. Crazy man. He was only out of his cell once every other day or some shit.
That young dude is like the prequel to “sling blade”. The similarities are uncanny.
@sint5990 - we've had several people comment the same. It really is surreal.
I've seen that other documentaries where that warden has been in there. And he's really a good caring person. He really cares about all these kids.
@wandamiller4473 - Yes, you're talking about Mike Dempsey. He's a great guy and truly does care about kids. It shows in the work he continues to do as Exec. Director of the Council of Juvenile Justice Administrators. We appreciate you giving him a shout out!
Man I feel so damn bad for the little brother. He was asked to do a terrible thing and I do feel for the old man and his wife but he really needs help he doesn’t need to be locked up around other convicts. They’re the only ppl he has to look up too and a building full of criminals aren’t the best role models
Exactly this. This is what many people don't understand. There are two types of offenders, the leaders and followers. The ones who commit crimes out of selfishness and the ones who do it because they follow the only ones they have to look up to. And the worst thing you can do is to put these kids around more bad examples. You take those same kids who follow, giving them good examples to follow, and they wouldnt be doing crimes. The system should not be so black and white overall. There are so many people who can be rehabilitated and should be. While there are people who are simply bad people who are never going to be safe for society, and those are the ones who should be given the long term and life sentences. But the ones who can be, should be treated differently and rehabilitated instead of punished only.
It breaks my heart for these kids and the families.🙏🙏
It’s there fault
does your heart break for their victims?

He's not messed up from his crime he's just messed up from when his mom used to drink while she was pregnant lol
He's probably brain damaged from in utero alcoholism. He's never going to progress. Take him and the brother out of the gene pool .
I agree...Blade had the mind of a 10 yr old and executive decision making was highly impaired. He was following the direction of his older brother, who, was just pissed that the elderly man shot him first. Blade did commit an egregious act but I feel that he is far less culpable...just a baby. 10 years would have been appropriate. 30 is ridiculous because he won't know how to function when he's released.
The younger brother blade reminds me of Billy Bob Thornton in the movie Sling Blade
He’s autistic for Gods sake a blind man can see that

Not to make light of the situation, but I find it ironic that the kids name is Blade and he used a knife. 😢
Only America would charge a developmentally delayed 13 year old as an adult…. It’s just sickening
Nah, not only america lol. There are much worse places
Yea only in America- lol

Sickening. I'm 17, and couldn't imagine being in prison. Absolutely sickening to throw these boys in prison. 60 years for a robbery gone wrong at 16 years old. If that happened in my country, Finland, they would get a couple of years in prison (at most), and they would spend most of the sentence in an open prison, going to school.
At your age, YOU KNOW RIGHT FROM WRONG.. DON'T DO THE CRIME AND YOU WON'T DO THE TIME..
BE PRODUCTIVE, NOT DESTRUCTIVE!
@@savedbyJESUS777 Humans know right from wrong at the age of 11. However, it's the prefrontal lobe, which is responsible for making rational decisions and controlling impulsiveness. The prefrontal lobe doesn't start maturing very much until the age of 18, and isn't matured until a person is 22.
The American system is still stuck in the 1800s; focused on punishment rather than rehabilitation, although it would be in everyone's best interest to rehabilitate such young individuals to become productive members of society, although they made very bad decisions.
Your way of thinking is exactly why the American system sucks.
@@savedbyJESUS777 You sound stupid. My uncles has been in prison majority of his life due to drugs. The system just chews you up then spits you back out. No sympathy.
@@savedbyJESUS777 If we all got what we deserved, every single human would be in hell for eternity.
