Kids Behind Bars Then & Now - Morris's Story and 2023 Update

  • In this criminal justice documentary first filmed in 2009, teenager Morris is brought into detention after cops find him smoking weed outside of an apartment building. Turns out Morris also had an outstanding bench warrant for not appearing at a previous court hearing. This exclusive documentary shows what life inside is really like for juveniles who are arrested and must spend time in detention, as well as go before a judge to learn their fate. This documentary traces Morris's story from the night cops brought him into detention in handcuffs, to his emotional visit with his mom, to two juvenile court hearings where Morris testifies on the stand. Morris also had to listen to his mom as she testified about his behavior at home and what she thinks is best for Morris.
A 2023 update on Morris's story follows at the end of this video, with an updated interview with his former attorney who talks about what it was like representing Morris at the time, and what happed to Morris years later after his brush with the juvenile justice system, and his time later in life serving time in adult prison.

However, like I have always told my son you have to take accountability, no matter what actions there are good and bad consequences. You are in charge of your own destiny. A present Father figure is needed no matter what!! Prayers and favor for this young man❤

The more we work together, the less discrimination those people will get away with honesty, because there are people who genuinely care and want the best for Morris, I just noticed it's the ones who did him wrong, lied and judged him harshly, they seemed to be the ones he remembered, they took up space in his mind, probably fed his anger. Although I understand, that also led him down the wrong path, and made them right. Morris, it's NEVER TOO LATE to prove em wrong! Also the defence was really insightful - top bloke 👏

Oh & this was back when they didn’t separate you from the adults or from ppl w/felonies. Still upsets me how I was charged as an adult & thrown the book at even though I hadn’t ever been in trouble. I had just turned 17 & imo should’ve went through juvenile court but ig I’m least happy the system has gotten wayyyy better than bck then. Of course still needs work but it IS better….

Yes it helped a lil but it’s up to you if you wanna change and become better for yourself. I hated myself for always getting mad and angry for the stuff people did too especially being in relationships. Praying and asking the lord for years to help me change was the best/worst years of my life. Because life/people will test you.. But I’m glad to say I’m a change person and I’m 26 years old now. The lord does change life’s when you ask! 🙏🏽

I see I'm doing my best but I don't see the listening skill, respect and boundaries. As a mother who doing it hard keep my kids home not surrounding with friends because I told them they little to understand what is going on and don't want them get in trouble.
I find myself repeating things over and over so it get me real angry, I guess it's because I want the good kids so I refuse to see they want to act bad... I'm continuing ask God to calm me down lean how to communicate better without raising my voice in other to be heard.

I have kids myself and I would never treat my kids how my father did to me. My best advice to you is “give that love to your babies that you never had no matter how old they are and they will always be grateful and see people do change no matter how much issues anyone has in life. The enemy will definitely test you because he doesn’t want change from you! Patients is the #1 thing in life no matter how triggered you get that’s just the enemy testing you to acted out!” You got this and never give up on the lord! He definitely has bigger and better for you no matter how old you are! 🙏🏽

Break that cycle of verbal ABUSE(idk that’s what it was when I experienced it) but I found out thru college psychology classes that it’s emotional and verbal abuse to constantly yell and fuss at them. It’s a critical spirit.
Break the cycle with your kids and they won’t continue it into their relationships and to their own kids. I had the same issue and I got help from the Lord, reading my Bible, praying about it, esp reading Proverbs, and also outside the church, help with a therapist. I quit doing it before they finished getting raised and I’m so glad I did.

A note about this video: This case was originally filmed in Indiana in 2009. It reflects an era before weed was legalized in many states (although it still remains illegal in the state of Indiana as of 2024). The video also reflects how juvenile detention cases were handled 15 years ago as compared to today. Today, the population of this detention center is much lower than it was back then. At the end of the video, there is a 2023 interview with the lawyer in this case, discussing his recollections of representing Morris in court, and how things turned out for Morris in the years since this video was filmed.

The weed relaxes the people that don't give them side effects it's also a temporary escape from one's self troubles but now categorized as medicinal under the parentheses for pain, increased appetite, sleep, relaxation, concentration, and a plethora of other medicinal purposes within their own human mental horizon as well as the law on the contrary..
It's always nice to witness something that was considered the Holy Grail of criminality by Police, Parents, & Professionals attached to something compared to midevil times in terms of the consequences where one would have their freedoms taken away if caught on a simple possession charge finally evaporate and pull back on the reigns of insane actions feathered by my invented word called redonkulous..
As time went by decade after decades it was greed that freed the weed & its connoisseurs ironically enough. Whereas the Government stepped in consciously knowing putting the citizens in jails or prisons cost billions for such a trivial pursuit alert for the waverings that got some reconsiderations by sheer logic that spun the wheel of their hypocrisy where they became the drug dealer of the gold green taxation on every gram sold to the public unequivocally..
However again it's nice to witness the ball and chain of the tyrannical neocon structured police & justice system make the right decision for this wonderful transformation where people don't get violated, jailed, and no stigma associated to and with something that incidentally grows wild on this planet called a herb..

I was in and out of JDC through out this time period and eventually ended up adult prison myself but have since changed my life. I’m now a substance abuse therapist and some of the client’s I work with get chance after chance where as back in this time period they would have been almost guaranteed to be remanded to custody.

Either he wasn’t feeling loved, respected and/or heard at home causing his outbursts OR he has a deep rooted internal anger issue that he can’t control. It very much seemed like the former, however, in either case he wasn’t getting the proper help at home. Mom and dad needed to do more to figure this out with him.
The court is never a better option than good parenting
When you have kids you commit yourself to doing whatever it takes to raise a child to become good adults. If that means moving to a new neighborhood then you move. If it means changing therapists 100 times then you do.
Children are not temporary responsibilities. The court shouldn’t be an alternative to parenting.
Mom seemed loving and caring but she didn’t have the proper tools to raise this kid. The court should put the parents in intensive parenting workshops and classes to help them get control over their families and not just throwing all responsibility on a child.

It is extremely hard for people to trust court appointed lawyers because people say "they" do not care about cases, they will get paid regardless. IDK if that is true or not, however if there is any doubt with a court appointed laywer, it isn't with this one. Morris's court appointed lawyer is patient and kind and he makes sure this young man understands what is being asked of him. I commend this lawyer. I hope and pray that there are more then less court appointed lawyers trying to help ppl, especially the youth.

I very much appreciate ur documentary's. I live in California (LA Co) where our DA is doing all these experiments to the juvenile justice system. Its brought us many mixed emotions. A lot of times it feels like a slap in the face. Soft on crime is not working, no consequences does not hold them accountable either. Anthony will hopefully continue to encourage & educate the "Brats" of tomorrow. Parents too, explain to your kids that freedom is a privilege, poor choices, one bad decision can can/or will destroy many. I can appreciate Anthony expressing how much he misses his Mom😥. That bond is special (between Mom's and son's). His words, demeanor were so genuine. Holding himself accountable and taking responsibility was BIG. Grown men don't even do that,. I have shared Anthony's story with several moms at my support group. So we Thank you too. Please keep us updated on Anthony journey.

Our ultimate goal in producing the stories we do is to educate and foster dialogue that can help illuminate ways to prevent all the pain involved in these crimes -- pain for the victims family members and pain for the kids and families whose lives change forever when the unthinkable happens. We don't have all the answers, obviously, but gaining a glimpse into how and why these tragedies take place can hopefully help lead to better laws and policies that tackle these issues BEFORE they become tragedies. 2009 seems like a life time ago...the Juvenile Justice System has changed. Delinquent kids in many states are arrested, taken into custody , picked up by their parents from detention centers without a hearing and in record time! Many commit crimes over, over and over again with little consequence or a change in their behaviors. Just because detention center numbers are low does not mean that kids are not committing crimes or are in need of help! Delinquent kids come from all types of backgrounds and living situations. The key to helping young delinquent kids is having strong family/community bonds , good education , available mental health options, eating a balanced diet, proper exercise, limiting the use of video games/cell phones...the list goes on! The most important factor of seeing this come to light is the timing...as a society we wait until it all hits the fan! Starting kids on a good path starts at home when they are learning right from wrong; when they enter K-5...not waiting to act when they are 11, 12, 13 and tearing your home up! The signs are there for parents , educators and the community to read...we just got to open the book!

Send the parents to jail and then ask them if their child should be sitting in a jail to rehabilitate. Also we need to really look at who we let be probation officers. They were into trying to rehabilitate this kid.

1:38 It’s smart for the jail to do a drug test before accepting him. I’ve seen teens thrown in jail, and obviously under the influence. This could be very dangerous. They could stop breathing, vomit & inhale it, or behave in a way that gets them into trouble.

Whe she said he would remain detained you could see him wanting to lash out but held it together.

You can see that he has serious issues with authority…unfortunately unless he changes his way I don’t see a very good future for him. Very sad.

his anger is a result of not having a real father in his life to teach discipline. He’s used to being a
mommas boy hence the emotional lashing out . All a mother can & should do is nurture their children.
