It's a speaker and he's just tapping/hitting the front of it. Speakers resonate due to the cone.
I'm pretty sure it's a Cajon. To c&p Wikipedia:A cajón is a box-shaped percussion instrument originally from Peru, played by slapping the front or rear faces with the hands, fingers, or sometimes implements such as brushes, mallets, or sticks.

To loud on beat box ,takes away from the song over the vocals unplug is less ,to much..be nice to hear guitar and vocals
