- Popcorn: A Snack with Surprising Health Benefits*
1. *High in Nutrients*
Despite its reputation as a snack food, popcorn packs a healthy punch. A 3.5-ounce (100-gram) serving boasts 387 calories, 13 grams of protein, 78 grams of carbs and 5 grams of fat. It's also packed with fiber, supporting good digestive health by adding bulk to stools, reducing constipation, and promoting regular bowel movements.
2. *Whole Grain Goodness*
Popcorn is a whole grain, which refers to grains that include all three original parts: the bran, germ, and endosperm. Whole grains like popcorn have been linked to a lower risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, certain cancers, and other health problems.
3. *Exceptional Antioxidant Profile*
Polyphenols, antioxidants found in abundance in popcorn, play many roles in the body. They can reduce inflammation, regulate blood sugar levels and lower LDL cholesterol.
- Ferulic acid acts as an antioxidant, neutralizing the harmful effects of free radicals, that are linked to various chronic diseases, such as heart disease and cancer.
- p-coumaric acid has anti-inflammatory properties, potentially inhibiting the development of certain types of cancer.
- Dimeric Procyanidin B2, an anti-inflammatory polyphenol believed to protect nerve cells, is found in the hull of the popcorn kernel.
- Zeaxanthin and Lutein, powerful antioxidants essential for eye health, helping stave off age-related macular degeneration and cataracts.
4. *Supports Weight Management*
Due to its high fiber content, popcorn can make you feel full longer. It's also a low-energy density food, meaning it provides fewer calories than the same weight of higher-energy dense foods.
5. *Promotes Gut Health*
The ample dietary fiber in popcorn not only helps to control blood sugar and cholesterol levels but also supports a healthy gut leading to better digestion and reduced risk of bowel-related issues.
6. *Supports Heart Health*
Popcorn, as a whole grain, is a source of dietary fiber which can lower cholesterol by binding with low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol in your intestines and preventing absorption. This, in turn, prevents the buildup of cholesterol in your arteries, lowering the risk of heart disease.
7. *May Reduce Risk of Certain Cancers*
Polyphenols in popcorn including ferulic acid and coumaric acid, as well as the fiber it provides, have been linked in research to a reduced risk of colon cancer and possibly other types of cancer.
8. *Good for Diabetic Individuals*
Because it is a whole grain, the high fiber content slows down digestion and prevents sudden spikes and drops in blood sugar.
While popcorn has many health benefits, it’s important to choose the right kind. Air-popped popcorn without added fats or sugar is the healthiest choice. Be aware that pre-packaged microwave popcorn can be filled with unhealthy additives.
Also, while popcorn can contribute to a healthy diet, it doesn't replace the plethora of nutrients you get from fruits, vegetables, and other whole grains. Enjoy your popcorn alongside a variety of other nutrient-dense foods for a balanced, heart-healthy diet.

I’ve been called a popcorn addict lol I eat Popcorn all the time. Freshly made popcorn with 100 percent Extra Virgin olive oil. I was 420 lbs, now I’m 290 and on my way to 190 lbs
Try using Coconut oil,!
How much unpopped do you make?
@@godzillamanstreb524 I just eyeball it each time. But I alternate between eating veggies and meat or Omad (Once Meal A Day)
I decided in the beginning of my journey that I would never give up popcorn and I didn’t.
@@bryanblanks1714 I can’t do coconut oil. Extra virgin olive oil works great for me. I get great results it’s just a matter of time til I reach my goal. I’ll be hitting my goal in around 5 months if it’s Gods will
@@bryanblanks1714 - Yes! Coconut oil half & half with extra virgin olive oil, used sparingly in a stir type popcorn with 2/3 cup organic popcorn is a delicious snack!
Buttered, salted movie theater popcorn is my favorite thing on earth. Not healthy but pure heaven.
I'm mindblown, who would've thought popcorn would be packed with all these benefits
I make my popcorn and i add a bit of taco seasoning mix. I use coconut oil. It is so good that I am going to make some right now! 😁 I love love love popcorn! Good Sunday Morning To Everyone 🌅
Thx 4 sharing can't wait 2 try❤
@@goldie6649 After I pop the popcorn, I add a bit of melted butter and then sprinkle some powdered taco seasoning from the little packet and Omgoodness!😋
@@robinsnestradioSounds wonderful but you have to look at the ingredients and make sure it doesn't have monosodium glutamate can cause migraines and just not good for you
I found like a new air popper at a Goodwill store and probably never go back to fixing it any other way
@robertvance1873 What’s the proof? It’s mostly based on a made up racist theory for attacking Chinese American.
I like home made popcorn, but certainly enjoy it with real butter and a little Redmonds Salt.
Exactly how I eat it😊 yum yum
How do you make homemade popcorn
@@KLolleySmith Buy organic popcorn. Place avocado oil in a pan. Heat the oil hit enough to make one kernel pop. Pour popcorn kernels in the pan and place a lid on the pan. Move the pan back and forth so the kernels continue moving. When the kernels stop popping, the popcorn is finished “cooking”. Pour in a bowl, pour some melted butter on top, add a little salt, stir around and you’ve got it!
The companies who were making microwave popcorn found that the employees were getting ill. Come to find out there were Carcinogens in the process of making it. I haven’t eaten it since!
@@KLolleySmithwith a fancy countertop popcorn machine! But it's a lot of oil and salt, not nearly as healthy
Homemade organic popcorn cooked in coconut oil, add grass-fed butter, and a non-fortified nutritional yeast - that’s love.
Another great thing about popcorn is, it forces us to use dental floss & thoroughly brush our teeth after an evening snack!
POPCORN, loaded with benefits‼️
The kernels shells are our floss!😂😂
Amen to that!😁
😂😂🤣🤣
I have gone back to air popping because I can no longer afford the microwave bags. Turns out it was the right thing to do. Grew up with an air popper going on Saturday nights with whatever horror/sci-fi flick was on. Best time of my life
I don't eat Corn in any form, No Soy, Rice, Pasta, Beans or Nuts other than small amount of Walnuts and Pumpkin seeds. And Especially Don't Ever use Microwave
I love it with a little coconut oil
The bag popcorn have deadly things in them. Plus anything microwaved kills all the vitamins and nutrients in the food.
I used to love going to the movies and eating popcorn there. I didn't know how unhealthy it was with all that salt and how they keep the popcorn fresh using a light above it.. I'm going to the movies today and ask if they have unseasoned popcorn.
@@mariatucker7695 Poison with a little Oil
I pop my popcorn in organic ghee and unfiltered, organic coconut oil. I use himalayan salt. I grease the bowl with Kerrigold butter, and when I pour the freshly popped popcorn into the bowl, I toss it with two rubber spatulas, which lightly coats the popcorn with this healthy butter. YUM!!
We use ghee(homemade) to make ours also. We love it
The fact is that eating GMO corn 🌽 is dangerous
agree with everything except using rubber. Im assuming you mean silicone?
I use organic popcorn, organic ghee and coconut oil, and Himalayan salt also. Wonderful!
That sounds amazing.
I love Lesser Evil popcorn. The one with Himalayan pink salt and organic extra virgin coconut oil.
Yes! Lesser Evil is the business!!! 🍿🍿🍿
Yes I am 90yr and eat some homemade popcorn daily made with coconut oil or avocado oil and pink😮 5:35
Omg me too. If I can not get it I also like Angie's in the light purple bag. It's a healthy kettle corn
I use coconut oil to pop my popcorn... and a bit of celtic salt. I eat it 3 times a week. 👍
Same
Same. Plus. Braggs 24 herb and use spritz spray of coconut oil
Good morning Dr. Mandell, if you top the popcorn with salt and nutritional yeast it tastes amazing!! It tastes like cheese popcorn. The nutritional yeast is packed with B vitamins too!
Great idea ‼️ Thx😎
Dumb question but what is the difference between yeast and nutritional yeast?
@@paulamaslow4298 I read that it's the same organism, but nutritional yeast has been heated so high it's no longer active
@@goldie6649 ☺️👍
I just saw that nutritional yeast a couple weeks ago and was curious when I was buying proper flour to use so now I know and I'm going to go get some today thank you so much. What if you have colitis then you can't eat popcorn?
Never thought of cinnamon on popcorn! Very different. You are a mine of info Dr. M! Glycemic control is so vital. 🇮🇪💕
Air popped popcorn sprinkled with cinnamon gives the illusion of sweetness without the carbs.

Yes, and the added benefits of wonderful cinnamon!
Good morning everyone ❤
GOOD MORNING TO EVERYONE ALSO...
🍃🌤Good Morning to everyone also, also. 🤗
I pop mine stove top,add real butter and sprinkle nutritional yeast on top. Yummy and good for you too.
Popcorn? Geez, I haven't had any of that in years. Think I'll buy some today. Thanks Dr. Mandell.
Non gmo popcorn available at the dollar tree
😄 Your trust level of dollar tree 😄
I don't like sweets. I would take a bowl of popcorn over chocolate any day! Popcorn is my jam. 🍿 😋
Chocolate isn’t sweets. Cacao is naturally unsweet. Popcorn isn’t jam… blueberry jam is my jam.😂
I not only learn a lot from watching your videos but additionally the comments are a goldmine. Best comment community on RUclips!💬
Popcorn is the Business. I use Grapeseed Oil for Popping..Stay Strong Keep Your Health Game Up People 👊🏽💜💯
Grape seed is high in omega 6 which is inflammatory I would not eat that or canola nor Soy Nor any other of the other inflammatory seed oils . For cooking try coconut or avocado For drizzling for for drizzling Olive oil extra virgin of course
Grape Seed oil is highly inflammatory! So are all seed oils, so you shouldn’t consume any of them! Try olive oil or coconut oil, instead.
I use Grapeseed Oil for popping as well. Better for my blood type versus coconut oil. 😉
For those thinking outside the grocery bag, Azure Standard has organic popcorn.
Feel free to let me and others know who else offers organic food ingredients for sale, online or off. Thank you, and Thank You for your channel Dr.
I very rarely eat popcorn, but when I do, I eat it plain. I just like it that way, I always have. And you are correct are popping is the best.
For years I made a special air popped spicy popcorn that I added to soups instead of crackers. But I stopped due to warnings about corn. I will now buy organic and enjoy it again. Thank you!
I’ve been telling people this for a long time. You can’t eat a boatload because it’s all about portion size. Such a great thing to snack on of course in moderation. Thank you for sharing!! Your videos are always extremely helpful!!!✌️🫶❤️
Wow! You're an open encyclopedia Dr. Mandell! Because of you I stop buying those bad snacks. I would love to see what you have to say about toothpaste. Thank you! God bless your beautiful family!❤💛🕊️🙏🤲✝️👋👏👏👏👏👏👏👏❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

I have 10 siblings our house was full all the time and the treat that was the greatest appreciated by us was popcorn cuz it was cheap you could make a lot of it I remember my mom dumping it in a pot with probably bacon grease and shaking that pot thank you
Popcorn with bacon grease? 🤤
@NYCrazyRob that's the way my dad done it, brothers and I chawed it up L O L thanks for the memory
@@NYCrazyRob-Yes Sir! That’s how my mom popped it when we were kids! I’m a Boomer and my childhood friend remembered how delicious that popcorn was when we were growing up. 💁🏽♀️
Air popped with olive oil, powdered pink salt, nutritional yeast and a dash of granulated garlic…!!!
Try it with a spritz of Tabasco as well…🎉🎉🎉🎉
This IS exactly how i eat mine since 74
Also balsamic vinegar sprinkled on top.
Whirley pop popcorn popper in stainless steel, not the aluminum one. Use olive oil in it you have a handle that stirs the corn inside, it's almost as fast as a microwave and it's fun. I had the air poper but it has a plug and blows popcorn everywhere. Whirley pop keeps everything in the popper and nearly all the corn gets popped. 😊 I add brewers yeast in mine after popped. It adds a cheesy taste and B vitamins.
Everything Bagel seasoning is the bomb on popcorn!
Good Morning All!
Fine morning @deborahmoniel788
THANK you Doctor 😊....I have a provider, but I also follow you. My provider agrees with your advice as well. God bless you, your family and all connected to you. I TRULY appreciate you ❤
I cook it in the microwave with a little olive oil, dash of sea salt, and various herb blends
I love a small amount of organic popcorn with Redmond salt sprinkled on it. Delicious !
What kind of salt is Redmond salt
Redmond Real salt. It’s a good high mineral sea salt resourced out of Utah.

Thank you
Tried the kernels in a brown paper bag microwaved. Works!
I'm sure a lot of you remember jiffy Pop popcorn. We only had it a few times back in the 1960s is my mother got aggravated when the foil would rip open before it popped. 😊
My brother eats it so often but he puts too much salt on it. I'm going to show him this video! Thank you Doc!
Ive stayed away from it for years not knowing all this. Thank you!
BJORN popcorn is the BEST!!! It is non-GMO, organic, and popped with solar panels. Seasoned with nutritional yeast. YUMMY!
Thanks for the good news. I eat popcorn weekly.
it is my favorite snack, I eat it with a little bit of salt and nutritional yeast.
I pop mine in a 6 qt Instant Pot! 2 T butter- 3 T Coconut oil- 1/2 C popcorn - let the butter & Coconut oil get melted & hot Add popcorn - put a glass or silicone lid on, when it’s almost done popping turning IP off and let popcorn finish popping. Use salt or your favorite seasoning!!
I like eating popcorn and im about to eat some right now. Thank you Dr Mandell for this information.😊👏
So happy to hear this! I sometimes snack on a cup size of organic and olive oil spray and celtic salt, feel guilty, yet physically boosted. TY Doc! For removing the guilt ingredient
For years I was eating a bag of microwave popcorn every night, with a soda, watching MST3000. I'm glad I got out of that ritual. Stopped almost entirely especially when the bags would burn before completely popping. I stopped buying it since I was throwing most of it away. Thank you for the good news . But two handfuls seem like a tease to the tastebuds!❤
Try white popcorn instead of yellow for less hulls! Yellow popcorn hulls are the thickest/toughest.
I started eating plain pop corn (no sugar, no salt, no any other aditives). It feels weird at first, but in time you get used to it and enjoy it. You also quench that need to be eating something all the time. Greetings from Argentina. Thanks Doc!!
Good morning Dr. Mandell ❤❤
I love popcorn with coconut oil, garlic powder, nutritional yeast, hot curry powder along with salt and pepper to taste. Yum!
I love popcorn popped in butter with no salt
My favorite snack!🥰🍿 I love the organic popped in EV coconut oil with some Himalayan pink salt! Wow! I had no idea it had ALL these benefits. Thank you, Dr. Mandell!!!❤☺️
We air pop organic popcorn and put a little Redmonds Salt and Nutrional Yeast on it. The Nutritional Yeast gives it a good flavor along with lots of B Vitamins.
❤️Thank You❤️
Melted organic Coconut Oil on popcorn is DELICIOUS! Has MCT oils too!
I make mine with organic popcorn, extra virgin olive oil and Garlic powder.
Pampered Chef has a great microwave corn popper made of silicone. I just use the seeds and a little butter!

Man ur ready popping off on this subject...
Thanks 😊 for sharing…😋😋
The key to popping a good healthy batch of popcorn is first using a non gmo corn and enough olive oil to fully pop it. And I use a medium heat of #4 on my stove. To avoid smoking the olive oil 'getting it to hot' I throw in a few kernels in the beginning and when I hear the first one pop, I then throw in my premeasured popcorn, perhaps 1/4 to 1/2 cup and then shake the pot every 30 seconds or so. If you're not getting fully pop kernels, you're not putting enough oil. When finished I use a cheese sprinkle mix that I buy and sometimes I will have it with melted butter. Though I never use straight salt on it, not even the pink salt....enjoy !!
I have a glass popcorn popper for the microwave, also an air popper. Love 'em both!. Now I'll just have to make sure I buy organic kernels. 😄 Thanks!
I like to cook it on the stove with coconut oil.
Wow so amazing doctor ❤❤❤❤
