Bonus: The Satisfying Process of Sealing Wood (ASMR) - Acorn to Arabella: Journey of a Wooden Boat

- We’ll see you Friday for a regular episode, but we’ve had a lot of requests for less speaking, and for perhaps something with a calm pace. We won’t be changing how we’re documenting progress on Arabella, but we wanted to release a bonus video showing one particular process from beginning to end.
So here's 31 minutes of satisfying wood sealing. That's it. Brushes pushing wood sealer, swishing and revealing golden wood grain. Enjoy!

Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building their own 38' wooden boat in their backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond-sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva.

I was hooked on Arabella from the time you poured the keel… I haven’t missed an episode and even went back and watched the older ones…. I wasn’t quite sure if the method for applying the sealer and finishes but it didn’t take long to figure it out…. You (everyone collectively) have and are doing an amazing job in my opinion… Nothing wrong with chasing your dream!!!! Carolyn is an asset to your endeavors!!!! Clearly she is going to be a “Master” of her trade if she continues to do the things she is doing!!!! I have nothing but respect and a bit of pride in you all!!! Thank you for taking me on your journey as you achieve your DREAM!!!!! I can’t wait to see what the future hold for all of you!!!!!!
Same... started watching since the lead keel pour.
Here here what he said
all of that. it's been great to watch this journey.
She will tire of working on other people's boats eventually and build her own. I'd bet money.
Acorn to Arabella kept showing on the right hand side of the youtube... I started watching when Steve's grandad was helping fell trees... But I do watch in batches anymore... catch up ever few months... Love Akiva and so does my ratdog. She used to bark at Akiva when they had the howl on the opening... ratdog misses that - LOL
How could 19 people not like this? That is professional work there. Carolyn has many many talents. She is an asset to the team for sure.
its up to 100 already, not sure why people didnt like this?
Not professionnal according by James Conner up here, but "amateurish" ! 🙄🙄
@@marcryvon I bet Mr Conner wouldn't have had any issue if Steve did it. Draw you own conclusions.🤷♂️
@@tookster7483 Agree. "Women, what do they know ! Right boys ?" Macho dork. 😝
@@tookster7483 that’s quite the assumption and accusation
I’ve been rolling and brushing clear for 65yrs and have learned how I should be doing it...Thankyou so much lass you are inspiring.
I Absolutely love the attention to detail, the precise strokes and gentle pulling of the sealer. Why rush through something that will be looking back at you thousands of miles out at Sea.... Great job... P.S. Prayers for Alix and his journey also .
He’s well, thanks so much for asking.
Never thought about watching someone paint before, nor will I again.
This has to be one of the most boring episodes, EVER. I love these guys. but this video is not for everyone.
It is amazing how much one can learn just by silently watching someone who knows what they are doing . Thank you for this wonderful demonstration.
Spoken like someone who doesn't know the correct way to apply varnish.
As Dad taught all six of us in our youth, it ain’t worth doing if it ain’t worth doing well. Love the commitment to care, thoroughness, and the patience of taking pride in work done well. (Meanwhile, there’s no small bit of therapy in watching it go forward, in all its deliberate - yes, slow - pace.). Thanks for the mid-week bonus! It’s a...bonus. -j.a.c.
Excellent job.
But this episode was like watching paint dry.
It was like watching paint peel
🤣🤣🤣
Next level …
No, the next episode is watching it dry
We love that you love our TotalBoat Wood Sealer and Gleam Varnish. You're doing both products major justice with your application. Thank you! It's coming along so nicely.
Right from the start, the video just grabbed me and I couldn't wait to see where this was going....At 10 min in I was on the edge of my seat...now I'm biting my finger nails....3 quarters done and a plot twist, fantastic! OMG the surprise ending...just genius!
Steve. Love the channel- I have been following since the beginning. I am a woodworker, cabinet maker, furniture maker, And have built several boats with bright finishes.… Etc. You do NOT need to be so finicky with the sealer coats on those bulkheads. You’re going to end up with 4 to 6 Coats Of varnish in the end… You’re going to sand or scuff between each coat. You don’t need to roll and tip the sealer coats.
Continued.. just get the sealer on there any old way and let it soak in. You’re going to knock it back with sandpaper anyway. You’re wasting a huge amount of time fussing around. I can only think that either it’s from an experience or because you Are worried about what people are going to think… Or you are getting bad advice. And I’m not sure who recommended that you use a roller for varnish… But it’s a waste of time. Get yourself a good bristle brush and apply the varnish with the grain, Working in an area the size of which allows you to keep a wet edge. You don’t even have to sand between all the coats-you’re just trying to get some coating build with the first four coats or so- Then you can knock it back flat with sandpaper and do a couple final coats super finicky if you want. Also, it makes no sense to start with gloss and finish with satin. The advantage of gloss is that it got better UV protection… Not needed for interior elements. If you want satin, use satin.
Continued…The trick is to know where to spend your time. On interior elements that aren’t going to be subject to UV rays, two or three coats of a high-quality varnish over a sealer coat will last and last… Degradation of the coating will only be from abrasion, nicks, etc. You will end up stripping or sanding all those coats off to reapply when everything gets banged up anyway. Only reason for many coats on bright work is to build up UV protection… So save that for any bright work that’s exposed to the sun. Again, I really love the project and really want to see you succeed… I think you will be better served if you figure out where to fuss and where to focus on utility and functionality and move on. Oddly, I think that, since you’re presenting everything on the video, You might feel like you have to do everything “professionally“.… as if you have to justify your methods to keep everyone happy and prevent a bunch of comments from the know-it-all’s. Your boat is well built, and will serve you well, and you’ll figure out hey what Works and what doesn’t once you start using it for its intended purpose. My advice, For what it’s worth, is this phone way less time on Stuff like varnish and prioritize getting a functional vessel and going sailing. you going to want to change a bunch of stuff after you’ve sailed it for a while anyway. That’s just the way it is with the first boat. Do your best, get it in the water, and plan for A bunch of modifications later to suit your style once you are cruising.
A beautiful job, done beautifully that wood is stunning.
I have a zen garden out back of my house. I get the same feeling of serenity watching this.
Carolyn, ya done good. The whole world is watching. Talk about tension, there it is. Your great!
Gosh, how pretty is all that white oak! Your whole boat is going to look like Craftsman furniture! And nice camera work, watching Carolyn schooling us all in how to properly apply a fine finish with the roll & tip method. She sets a high standard.
Dad are you really watching paint dry? No babe I'm watching a highly skilled person applying a wood sealer and varnish and learning how to get the best finish possible that will help me in the future.
Thanks, for the surprise! bonus episode, that grain just pops doesn't it. Beautiful finish! Your not the only one that hates mosquitos, my dear, I hate them with a passion as well, not as much as horse flies but pretty close. LOL btw I wasn't expecting these bulkheads to look so good, they look fantastic!!
That grain really pops.
that plywood Steve made is crazy great looking
Thanks for teaching me how to use the sponge brush. I was always sceptical about using them . At 72 I can still learn! Beautiful work. Joe
This is totally amazing to watch. One might think that watching stroke after stroke would be boring, but it is quite mesmerizing. Each painstaking stroke reveals more grain in a somewhat magical way. This expert craftsman is also an artist.
More entertaining to me than Bob Ross, that's for sure. "Happy Little Medulary Rays"!
Now that was one relaxing video to end the day. Of course we will now expect this extra video every week. ;)
Just what I needed to relieve the stress of the day. Thank you.
Never Thought Watching Someone Staining Would Be So Relaxing !!!
FYI... no stain, clear varnish, natural color of the wood.
Okay watching the young lass Go against the grain, then with the grain, then tip it on EVERY Board has convinced me that I will be painting my interior 'Contractor Beige' with Exterior grade latex. Epic Props for that kinda dedication, and Arabella will be AWESOME, but I would lose my shit trying to do that .
“And relax there now” Beautifully done!
Carolyn’s work ethic and attention to detail is a joy to watch and appreciate!!!
She clearly takes pride in her work. She is an artist at what she does. Not just a task master.
That wood is glowing.
That girl knows her stuff, she's doing a heck of a great job on your boat
Looks perfect!!! Thank you Carolyn!
Half an hour of watching paint dry? You have my full attention!
31 minutes, so just over half an hour... 😉
definitely boring to many people, but for me that was great. she has some serious skills. I especially dig around 16:00 and then around 21:00 ish. following the grain, not the cut, but accounting for the cut too... very talented and learned.
Thanks for the change of pace. I’ve been looking forward to this bonus episode.
Guys, that is just way to pretty! It's more like furniture than a sailing vessel, she will outlive us all!
The perfect stress relief video.
Tedious work but oh so rewarding!!
There is beauty in this slow and steady work. Stunning...
Thats a whole lot of rollin' and tippin'.
Funny
And not even in the water yet...😉
My weekend is complete when I watch a new episode and now, my weekday is complete.
Thank you for that and thank you to Caroline for a relaxing half hour or so just watching as someone who focused on what she was doing applied her focus, skill, and obvious pride in craftsmanship.
Only slightly more entertaining than watching varnish dry.
Ha ha. Wait for the back story Acorn to Arabella - The Early Years. From acorn to oak tree. 😊
Impressive application, colours, grain variation and the gorgeous flaming in the white oak! and that mahogany was sure worth saving!
After you sand and varnish the inside of a 92 foot yacht built in 1927 you finally get the hang of it! Nice job!
You guys must have had a crop duster apply some pretty serious bug repellent over your place. Any time I’ve ever varnished outdoors in Vermont I seem to get every species of bug stuck to my work. Great job.
Too true. Even in a shed, dust & bugs are murder. Trying to finish a high gloss window ledge was something else. I had two strategies I used: covering it with a panel, or putting nails in the end & flipping it upside down.
Inspired by Shaun McDaniels, I just went back and watched episode 10, buying the keel and bringing it into the boathouse. Man, you've come a LONG way.
Again, I have learned something for Acorn to Arabella.
White oak has become one of my favorite woods
I throughly enjoyed this episode. Calm and relaxing, with such a delicate touch.
We’ll see you Friday for a regular episode. Glad you enjoyed!
30 minutes of watching varnish dry; fun!
Not exactly... 31 minutes of watching varnish get wood wet.
Don't really get the ASMR thing but that wood looks like art work
Try it with headphones...
ASMR is sight and sound, typically.
To say that wood is out the back garden, god damn it’s pretty 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Yep, put me right to sleep. Gonna look great. I think your oak color will look good with the old mahogany.
this is like therapy for OCD folks ... beautifully done sir
Wow a half hour of watching Carolyn varnishing was an education. She is a pro!
This is totally up my alley. Your usual content has relaxing qualities but this is next level.
Hey Steve and Alex and Carolyn - I know you’ve been working on this boat for years and that you’ve consulted leading experts at every step along the way and I know that I have no boat building experience whatsoever, but would you mind if I told you how you should do things on projects that you’ve clearly already finished before this video came out, just so I can demonstrate how much I know about things to people I don’t even know? Much appreciated.
You funny!
Artistry!) Caroline is a superstar! Every single board finished like a unique piece... Awesome!)
Enjoyed watching this while listening to a radio show.
Fantastic patience but..
Ohh maannn.
You edited out the best bit.
The drying bit between coats 😉
You really got into this... which is pretty fun
Thought I'd lost all sense of time!! Thanks for this Bonus guys 👌👍 Lovely work Carolyn, you even make Varnishing look like a skilled profession.
Yeah, I did a double take myself. No Bacon and Egg Burgers for breakfast this morning like the usual Saturday event.
Same. Woke up this beautiful Wednesday and here is Arabella. Immediately thought “dang, last couple days flew right past me”. WIFEY ! Did I double up on medication?”
"Made it look like a skilled profession"? Are you under the impression that boat painting is not a skilled trade? If you are , you are sadly mistaken. There are those with the attitude "If you can piss, you can paint". There are others who can actually paint for a living to a standard that very discerning customers with multi-million pound,or dollar, yachts will find acceptable. Any joker can tosh paint or varnish in their own lounge and say "Job done".
@@catabaticanabatic3800 stfu and read the comment as it was intended to be read.
@@catabaticanabatic3800 Firstly, you COMPLETELY missed what the OP was trying to say.
Secondly. "There are those with the attitude "If you can piss, you can paint"." This is why some people can paint a masterpiece that lasts centuries, and the majority can't.
I never knew how entertaining watching paint, or in this case varnish drying would be. Thanks
Wow, I went into some kind of trance watching this!
Dale @Tassie
After 10min, I asked myself why am I watching this.... And then I watched till the end.
Me too ! 🤣
at 2x
@@NoName-zn1sb guess that's better for some than watching at x 0.25 speed?
Beautifully done.
Attention to detail! Many won't appreciate the effort but, they probably didn't build their boat from the ground up? Awesome effort, thanks for sharing! Cheers from British Columbia.
So I just spent an entire precious half hour of my life watching nothing more than the application of finish to wood? YES! YES I DID! And I don't regret it one tiny bit...
Deliciously satisfying video! Thanks!
Very Zen Video! Beautiful craftsmanship.
The grain looks so nice!
I can't believe I watched the whole thing ... and then clicked "like".
Me too 😁😍😉
Lovely to see the wood come to life.
"It's not a piano"....one of my favorite Carolyn quotes ever. Well, not anymore. This work now basically is a piano. Great job on this bit of piano.
Wow she know what she is doing. looks beautiful
Love your brush technique. Leave the backstroke for the swimming pool. Leaves too many bubbles. Great job.
For the last few years I have sat back and proudly surveyed my oak engineered laminate hardwood flooring (expensive plywood) Now I wish I had gone for the real thing!.
Beautiful! I recommend tipping with a bristle brush as foam brushes tend to form bubbles in the varnish.
Never use a "natural" bristle brush with synthetic sealers or varnish - enough said!
Agreed. A fine horse hair has always been my go to for thinned varnish. Hog hair is my preference for thicker finishes though, as horse hair tends to break and leave hairs in thicker finishes, in my experience.
@@evanschwartz3030 I have always used a natural bristle with spar varnish on sanded wood with excellent results.
It never gets old, seeing Arabella come together
Nice sealant job! she will be a pretty boat when all is said and done!! Keep rolling Arabella team!
The paint job is something else. Very Schmick
Love seeing craftsman at work, keep it up guy's.
Looks awesome!
Absolutely beautiful wood.
This paint prosses is pure love.
Looks awesome
Light and Sporty Guy's secret to finishing brightwork: Just brush it on. Don't worry about a couple sags or brush marks because you will be sanding and refinishing it again before you know it.
(Actually, modern varnishes flow so nicely that brush marks pretty much go away on their own.)
Exactly, and sanding sealers raise the grain and sand so easily that a child could do it. They're creating the bubbles she has to back brush by using foam roller and brush, should just use a decent oil based brush.
Looks great, she did a fantastic job. I do have to admit though, I had flash backs from shop class back in high school. Working for the 'A" man working hard and sweating it out......lol
Thanks for sharing.
Love white oak, just really nice timber to work with and finishes great.
Watching sealer put on, very interesting.
Ok, now I understand the joke about watching paint dry.
That's what "Let the images speak for itself", sounds like. Great!
Now that I've watched the paint dry for 31 minutes I can go outside and watch the grass grow
what are they thinking-- CRAP--- LETS UP LOAD IT
It was all in the title of the video. You should have known what you were clicking on. Also, you have the necessary tools at hand to skip ahead or exit the video completely.
If you "lost" 31 minutes, that's on you.
You know, I have never physically seen grass grow, but I have gotten up in the morning after a rain and seen it visibly taller than the evening before.
@@watcherofwatchers that was tongue and cheek my friend I watched the whole thing in real time there is something people need to realize when you post videos on RUclips if it's monetized the more comments you get the more thumbs up and even thumbs down that all helps the channel what I say doesn't really matter it's just the fact that i commented
Looks really good!
Beautiful wood, excellent work.
tires on the nearby road sound like rolling surf.
This was wonderful to watch.
If I cold make a suggestion..
For the next bulkhead, I'd like to see the Matt Cremona approach to liquid application:
Throw a bucket of sealer over the panel, and smoosh it around with a broom or a gloved hand..!
15 seconds and you're done!
Hahah 😂🤣
In all seriousness though, Caroline truely is an asset to this project, her skills and attention to detail is next level.. so happy to see her back onboard, pun intended.. 👍😁
The finish really makes those medullary rays pop in that quarter sawn Oak. Just the first of how many coats of finish in Arabella's life.
That recycled timber is amazing.
Waiting for the next vid about grass growing.LOL!
Now, that would be an interesting addition to the boat... a natural putting green... 😎.
Relaxing video, yes watching paint dry ,its all good
Not paint, bit we get your drift. 😁
Even your weird art videos rock.
