Nixon taught me a very valuable life lesson which has served me well. I was 13 when he resigned. I'm almost 52 now. When you screw up, admit it early, be remorseful and promise it'll never happen again. Unfortunately, politicians don't think like "normal" people.
Ford I would agree but to call Carter a momma's boy underrated and Ronald Reagan overrated you got a lot of nerve, for one thing if not for Barack Obuma and Lyndon Johnson Jimmy Carter would've been the worst President in our country's history, remember inflation went from 6% when Ford left office to 13% in 1980 plus the Iran Hostage Crisis and the mismanagement under Jimmy Carter caused chaos in the military much the same as the chaos in cultural rot was caused by Barack Obama aka Obuma and Lyndon Johnson, don't forget Ronald Reagan won the cold war for the United States without firing a single shot, name me a President who could've done that?
John I guess you are a gop lifer. Yes Carter and Obama were disappointing in their terms in office but to call them the worst presidents ever means you have a short attention span. You only target Pres in last 50 years and not the whole history to Washington in 1789. I guess Herbert Hoover does not count right lol. Here a good list IMO on what scholars rank the worst Presidents in US History. Note most on the list are from the 19th Century. www.usnews.com/news/special-reports/the-worst-presidents/slideshows/the-10-worst-presidents
+sboudreaux27 well asians only made up 3% of that voting block in 76.. carter won 75% of the Hispanic vote,(they made up 8% of that voting block in 1976) as far as black voters they made up 22% in 1976,and Jimmy carter won 92% of the black vote...yes hispanics and asians vote for democrats, but not in the big numbers like black voters...in some counties Jimmy carter won 100% of the black vote!!!!!
I was in the 2nd grade. My parents took us (the 3 kids) w/ them to vote that night -- an area grade school. That's all I can remember from the 1976 presidential election campaign.
One more state came Jimmy Carter's way for his winning the 1976 presidential election: Ohio. The bellwether state had 25 electoral votes, at the time, and it gave Carter his outcome of winning the Electoral College with a score of 297.
Thie elction was called MUCH later than was usually the case. ALL three major networks had plans to sign off anywhere between 1-1:30 AM CT according to the TV listings in the Minneapolis Tribune for November 2, 1976
Yes, I believe all three networks had different projections that ended the race. I really want to see NBC's and CBS's coverage because of that, but both are impossible to find.
About halfway through the previous part, Howard K. Smith referenced UPI calling Hawaii and Wisconsin as the state's that put Jimmy Carter over the top before the same call was made by ABC.
I voted for Carter. I stayed up late the night and into the early morning hours and watched this very footage when it was live! I remember President Ford had someone read his statement thanking everyone and asking the nation to support the President-Elect. He lost his voice and was not able to speak.
Yes indeed but I still would've voted for Ronald Reagan and John F Kennedy over Gerald Ford but if the Primaries were Ford vs Richard M Nixon Ford would've gotten my vote, Ford was a much better President than Lyndon Johnson, Barack Obama aka Obuma and either one of the Bushes and Bill Clinton
@Chopper Morton Ronald Reagan waffled as consistently as anyone else. His own proposed budgets more than doubled the national debt. He campaigned pro-life but put two pro-abortion justices on the Supreme Court. He said that he was against the bail-outs of Chrysler and NYC but changed his mind during the campaign of 1980. He signed an amnesty for illegals. He gave away our tactical nuclear deterrent in Europe with the INF Treaty.
I remember flipping among the networks that night, so I was able to add up projected electoral votes given by any of the networks, and as a result, I "called" the election for Carter around 2 A.M. EST!
Ronald Reagan stomped a mudhole in Jimmy Carter in the 1980 election. Carter was a discrace to this country. Even liberals like Ted Kennedy said no more Jimmy Carter. People in his own party were fed up with him.
@Suprkit Well, I said that for the kids and people who don't know to prevent the outcome from being spoiled. Because let's be honest, if you watch something for the first time and someone ruins it before you watch it, wouldn't that suck?
Again, there is no mention of "swing" states. And someone (Howard K Smith I think) says "that Hawaii vote is not surprising." These days, it goes w/o saying tha Hawaii is Democratic. Why are we so predictable these days. I think everyone should vote against their "expected" vote in non-swing states just to shake things up and let them know that they can't take our votes for granted wherever we live.
@rrrrr - Hawaii entered the union in 1960. It voted for the first time that year. It has carried Democratic in every presidential election with exceptions of 1972 and 1984, which were 49-state re-elections for incumbent U.S. presidents Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan. During the time frame of 1960 to 2016, which were 56 years’ and 15 cycles’ of presidential elections, Rhode Island has carried the same as Hawaii. (The last Republican U.S. president, elected to two terms, who carried Rhode Island every time was 1952 and 1956 Dwight Eisenhower. I would guess Hawaii would have carried the same.)
NBC had different projections:Three states were still out:Ohio,New Mexico, and Mississippi.Had each state reversed itself, the vote would have been tied.
A couple of things to note. Isn't it amazing that the election was called when the last state to close the polls was called. That's right, HAWAII was the decisive state in this election. In addition, it's interesting to note that back then, California and New York offered roughly the same number of electoral votes, and the third-biggest electoral state was Pennsylvania, not Texas or Florida, and Ohio offered just about as many electoral votes as Pennsylvania and Texas. My, how things have changed over 40 years. Now Texas is pushing New York for #2, in terms of most number of electoral votes, and Pennsylvania and Ohio have had their numerical significance dropped.
Actually, TX now has the 2nd most electoral votes in the nation, having gone past NY. NY is now the equivalent of Florida in the electoral college. Hard to believe how this map would look now, as the entire south is GOP and most of the north is Democratic. It's interesting to see how it's changed over 4 decades.
It also demonstrates how things continue to change, as far as what states have the most importance in electing the president. As I mentioned, 40 years ago, New York was on virtually equal ground with California, and Texas was no more important than Pennsylvania and Ohio, and Florida was not really that important. But now, you have a certified "big three" (CA, TX, and NY), with FL not that far behind, and in fact, within two or three election cycles, Florida could even jump past New York for the #3 spot, in terms of most electoral votes. And Pennsylvania and Ohio is now down there with Illinois, in terms of the number of electoral votes rewarded for winning the state. One of my benchmarks these days for who may win the presidency is, which candidate will win two of the big three? Recently, it's been the Democratic candidate, since CA is now a virtual certainty for the Democratic candidate, as well as New York. But with Florida possibly making it a "big four", if a candidate wins three of the "big four" in 2016, I have a hard time believing that candidate, whoever it is, won't be the next president. If the "big four" are split two apiece, it may be a late night/early morning for the networks in November of 2016, as it was in 1976.
jimmy carter owe his 1976 winning the presidency to the black vote, especially when you see how narrowly he won Pennsylvania,,missouri, wisconsin and ohio...
It's kind of amazing how much less "made for television" national elections used to be. I can't imagine a race not being decided until 3 AM Eastern today. If I'm not mistaken they called it for Obama around 11PM.
UCKABAH In 2008, Obama was declared the winner right at 11:00 pm EST; polls had just closed in the last of the Lower 49 states, which were way enough to push him past the finish line (John McCain took Idaho).
If people my age don't know who won this election(I'm 24) that's pretty sad. It's not THAT long ago,at least to me. Very cool videos nonetheless. Thank you very much for posting them.
He pissed off supporters/fans of Nixon and/or LBJ, which played a big role in his loss of support during the final stretch (the platform for his interview was arguably secondary).

+1jeffr Only President in modern day history to never have had the military fire one shot, missile, bullet or anything during his entire 4 years but I guess you'd prefer a President who uses his military a little more killing untold number of innocents.
I prefer a President that our enemies will respect. While the peanut farmer was too timid and weak to fire a shot, our enemies at the time weren't. They saw a weak President and took advantage of it. During his term in office, the Russians invaded Afghanistan. The Communists in Central and Latin America, backed by the USSR and Cubans, killing thousands. Carter also didn't back the Shah of Iran, which lead to the Ayatillah Khomeini, and an Islamic regime that has killed and is continuing to kill hundreds of thousands, if not millions of people. They also humiliated the US by taking American hostages and held them for 444 days. The economy was also in shambles during his presidency. Reagan was an actor, but that never disqualified him from the presidency. In in many ways Carter is considered by some people to have been a better President than Reagan. I know there are also those who prefer Reagan to Carter, but I don't see how peanut farming, acting, etc. disqualifies anyone from being president.

On ABC, yes; if you were watching NBC and/or CBS, it was Mississippi that helped Carter reach the finish line.

My Grandma celebrated this news. She wasa die hard democrat.
If grandma was around today and saw what the democRATic party is now, she'd have wished to have died again

Well 1976 was the last election in which Texas voted for a Democrat for President. Just a little trivia.
Well, they learned thier lesson.
Well, they learned their lesson.
Also the last time a Democrat won in Mississippi, Alabama, and South Carolina
It did not. And it wasn't even close.

He won because he carried most of the south.
Jimmy Carter won Texas & was the last Democrat to do so.
And to sweep the deep south
Carter started off with so much promise, but collapsed after his only achievement, the Mideast Peace accords at Camp David.
Miss Lillian was just lovely. A genuine Southern lady.
I saw Miss Lillian speak at a Carter rally next to my school back in 1976
