Election Night 1976 Part 1

  • Here is the first part of what everyone has been looking for for quite awhile, Election Night 1976!
A lot has changed from 1972: Howard K. Smith and Harry Reasoner are still at the anchor's desk, but are joined by Barbara Walters, who is not only the first female evening news anchorperson, but also the first woman to anchor election night coverage. She is not the first woman to be the sole anchor though, Katie Couric was in 2008. So we have some history here on the anchor side, as well as the actual race, which is one of the closest in history.
The Reasoner./Walters pair is known for their awkwardness, and the coverage does not fail to deliver this as there is several moments throughout the night that Harry and even Howard have a WTF look on their face when Walters says something out of left field.
Frank Reynolds is off the campaign trail, instead he is in charge of the senate calls, joining him with the Governor and House calls are Anne Compton and Don Farmer. Tom Jarell is still the white house correspondent, joined on the other side by Sam Donaldson, who was the fill in break anchor from 1972, Steve Bell took his spot, and filled it again in 1980.
I have two dvd sets of the coverage: One with better quality and no commercials, and another one with commercials, but it is missing three hours of coverage. I will upload different ones through the cycle. I hope you all enjoy the coverage and stay tuned I will have to put up quite a lot of clips!

The thing that strikes me most about this is the lack of teleprompters back then. It's really strange to see the news anchors constantly glancing down at their notes and stumbling over words so frequently after growing up in an age where that's not really a thing anymore.

@beaverpitt I think what that was, was a graphic with the outline of a Continental soldier's head (being the bicentennial year).

What time did ABC start election night coverage. According to the MInneapolis Trinune for November2, 1976 KMSP(then the ABC station for Minneapolis but a VERY weak affilliate) started coverage at 7:00 PM CT while CBS and NBC started there coverage at 6:30 PM CT Coverage. WAS slated to go till 1:00 AM CT but of course went much lalter as the election was not decided by then

@efan2011 Where do you get your info??? You seem to know a lot. It was kinda suprising to read that but it does put certain things in his 1978-1983 run as anchor in a whole new context, number one of course being the day Pres. Reagan was shot. It has been often said that he was worried about his son Dean safety. But have noticed some other things which I will metion in my next post.

@Polethebear76 I remembered hearing about the concern for Dean playing some role in Frank's very tense reactions at that time, but I think he and James Brady (the WH press secretary/most seriously injured of the 4) were pretty close as well. I wish there was video of it on RUclips (saw it as part of a tribute airing after Frank died) where his "get it right" blow-up came after all the networks erroneously said Brady had died.

@Polethebear76 I felt the same way the first time I saw this, I was expecting a set like the 1972 set which was simple but red, white and blue. They changed the theme midway through the year, it was supposed to be elections 76 but they changed it. The graphics however are an improvement to 1972, which had a blue screen with with letters, at least they changed colors!

The number of deaths in 2022 was madness. Absolute madness! We lost 13 out of 17 people that were 114+ at the start of the year, about 70 at the time of the coverage! This includes three year of birth cohorts! The dead celebrities were madness too: Orrin Hatch (who you’ll see later in the coverage), Ray Liotta, Ivana Trump, Olivia Newton-John, Bernard Shaw, Queen Elizabeth II, Aaron Carter, Irene Cara, Christine McVie, Kirstie Alley, you name it!
As if this wasn’t ludicrous enough, I learned about Barbara Walters’ passing in 2022 shortly after 2023 came! Now all three news anchors are gone - Smith died when I was little, and Reasoner at a young age before I was born!
It pains me to say it - RIP.

@Polethebear76 I heard a story that was told by Max Robinson online. He said that he disliked Reynolds because he was so rude to him and the lower staffers and colleagues like janitors. He always made Reynolds wait in his office a long time just so he could talk to Max about something, and it would make Frank angry, but everyone laughed about it. Max liked everyone else except for Reynolds, and he even refused to go to his funeral! I have to admit that was wrong of him to do.

Frank then laughed with suprise and backed/calmed down as they went to break. I have wondered in the last few days if his health was getting to him mentally. I have read that he knew by at least early-82 that he was seriously sick and possibly on his way out.

@Michael1966W I would not say it totally sucked, it was one of the more dramatic and interesting Election Night's there has ever been. That reminds me of a phrase my College history professor told me "The Country gets the government we deserve." The country was into Carter but was begging to turn to Ford, the election day was just too early, Ford could have won if it was to be held a day later. I just wish I had CBS's or NBC's coverage to put on You Tube.

Very interesting fact about this presidential election. All 4 major party candidates would be their respective parties nominee for president and lose the general election. Ford here in 1976, Carter would lose his reelection bid in 1980, Mondale lost in 1984 and it would take 12 yeard after that but Dole would lose the 1996 presidential election.

Oh yes, both guys were to known to have gruffy at times. Reasoner was angry at ABC for hiring Walters, and he had a right to as ABC violated his contract by not asking him if he wanted to work with him before signing her. He wanted to be the solo anchor and the ratings were going up but ABC was not happy with the increase and got Walters. He should have treated her better, but it's partly her fault that he was so angry because she signed without thinking about Reasoner. I still like him though.

Kind of wish they had NBC and CBS's 1976 coverage, it was a close election, and if I were to make a guess, ABC's was probably the worst of the three (graphics, set and anchor performance), plus NBC had the awesome map, the first of it's kind. Reasoner and Smith were fine in 1972, but the addition of Walters kind of throws everything off here.

I think all of you are unfair. In policy terms, Carter was a very good president, but his efforts didn't pay off during his term. He appointed Paul Volcker and adopted tight monetary measures in order to cut inflation (created by the keynesian Nixon policies). He also tried to go along with Nixon's deténte, but made a U-turn in 1979.The idea of criple the USSR making Afganistan a "soviet Vietnam" was Carter's. All this set the stage for the 80's econonomic recovery and the fall of communism.

+Mr. Hissing Cockroach She means that without their strong support, Carter would have lost states, such as Ohio, Wisconsin, perhaps Missouri and maybe even New York state.

You seriously can tell the general dislike between Barbara Walters and Harry Reasoner....

Yes! I watched this not knowing their history. You can really feel the tension. It’s uncomfortable.

Odd election in retrospect. Ford was more pro-choice than he let on in public, and Carter was more pro-life than he let on. They both simply stated they supported their parties platform positions as a way of disguising their feelings. And George McGovern voted for Ford, and urged his friends to do the same.

Oh, that would have been an, um, interesting news room to work in. Nasty Reynolds plus nasty and loathsome Reasoner with trying to fit in Walters.I'm amazed there really wasn't blood loss in the studio! You can see Reasoner's misery and hate ooze through the tv screen.
