- In this part we see interviews with Mrs. Carter from Plains, an interview with Republican VP nominee Bob Dole (oddly enough at the Watergate Hotel!) We also see Carter arrive at his hotel where he watched the returns with his wife and we get a short interview with him as well.
Carter takes off in this clip, but believe me folks it get's a lot closer!
Carter's face when he was going to be interviewed is a classic!
Barbara is more of an interviewer than a anchor, and it's good to see that early on with "Miz Lillian."
I would think that Carter would've been the one going to the dentist on Election Day!
PRESIDENTIAL
1:21 Jimmy Carter wins South Carolina (TURNOVER)
14:53 Jimmy Carter wins West Virginia (TURNOVER)
SENATORIAL
15:36 Independent incumbent senator Harry F. Byrd (I-VA) is re-elected, defeating military general Elmo Zumwalt (Hold for Independent)
16:25 Democratic incumbent senator Lawton Chiles (D-FL) is re-elected, defeating John Grady (Hold for Democratic)
GUBERNATORIAL
8:08 Democratic Jay Rockefeller (D-WV) is elected to his 1st term, defeating Cecil H. Underwood (Gain for Democratic)
The ABC graphics -- the orange background -- was horrendous. Must have been just garish 70's fashion.
Was also the last time South Carolina voted Democratic.
And Texas too.
Mississippi, Alabama
Also carter was the last democrat to win without all of New England the Pacific Northwest Illinois and Michigan California Nevada New Mexico New Jersey
No ford won NJ Connecticut Vermont New Hampshire and Maine I think too as well as Illinois and Michigan
lore bore disregard my last comment I misunderstood your comment
I would have thought that the Republicans would have stayed away from the Watergate Hotel this year!
4:56 is it just me or does it feel like bob dole always have his hands together and always appears to be taller then those he talks to
Maybe the hands together were to avoid drawing attention to his right hand (which Dole lost the use of as a result of injuries suffered in World War II).
6:43, Watergate probably tanked the Ford/Dole ticket in 1976.
SENATE, PRESIDENT, HOUSE, AND GOVERNOR PROJECTIONS
President:
1:21 South Carolina (Carter win)
14:51 West Virginia (Carter win)
Senate:
15:31 Virginia (Independent hold)
Governor:
8:01 West Virginia (Democratic gain)
Al Gore as everyone knows is a very environmentally friendly guy, and he came out against Coal mining in the past. That was and still is to a point West Virginia's main income. So he made everyone there angry and Bush used that to get votes from there.
Baba Wawa!!!!
whose idea was it to have dole interviewed at the watergate? a fair amount of time had passed. but?
5:10 I think that the real problem was the democratic wars comment
i was only 8yrs old!:(
I was -31
She was, it rather surprised me myself how she looked back then.
Guess Barbara needed to get her Floridas straight! Still early in the coverage, though.
@cr3861 I agree with you, Barbara was out of place in general. In 1980 coverage I have, they moved her to the interviewer spot and she did a good job.
dole looks the same as he did in 96
@3:32 Barbara Walters claiming she is from a small town. She was born in Boston and lived most of her childhood in NYC... Where does the small town fit in, Barbara?!
How did West Virginia go Republican all of a sudden in 2000?
They must have opened their eyes after seeing How Clinton raised taxes.
Nope
