  • This is the final part of the night, I just decided to put it over 20 min because there is no breaks. Included in this clip is speeches from Carter and Mondale, an interview with Mo Udall and some commentaries from the panel.

The congrats of Ford... and no underlying booing. Just a cheer. God to go back to those times.

Just as Mondale hits the stage at 17:33, enjoy the anti-Dole bumper sticker someone holds up!! Great job on 1976 network TV!!

Say what you want about Jimmy Carter’s presidency, at least he was a nice guy and has a respectable personality, unlike many of the characters now in Washington today

This must been a great night for coffee makers for this ABC News crew to still be working at 4 AM

This news crew looks stunned and disappointed by Carter's win. Four years later, that ballroom will feel like a funeral. Carter meant well, but was a lousy president, and I'm a diehard Dem. Carter barely won, and it was all Watergate backlash.

You can tell they were getting a bit punchy at the end, but I think it was a passable effort overall for Harry/Barbara/Howard in spite of a few gaffes. The next year and-a-half would see the Harry/Barbara team go up in flames leading to the start of the World News Tonight era. In retrospect, Frank Reynolds at the Senate desk might've been his audition for Harry's job. Enjoyed the coverage and am looking forward to your next compliation.

I agree, if it would have been anyone else in his spot they would have been scared to do the job. Ford wasn't at all, he was a rarity among the national politicians, a good man with high character. He never gave up, and almost pulled it off. I am not trying to sound biased or anything but I think he would have done a better job than Carter did in his term.
I agree with you about Truman, both are underrated.

Pffft.....The Camp David Accords were put into place in 1976 by Ford. Carter just finished the job. Also it was Sadat who wanted peace with Israel. Camp David worked because both sides wanted peace. BTW youre forgetting Jordan and Israel signed a peace agreement in 1994, that continues to this day.

Under Reagan 20 million news jobs, inflation fell from 15% to 3%, interest rates fell from 20% to 5%. What liberty did people have that they dont have today thanks to the GOP??? Tell me. BTW the country is NOT becoming younger. The average age in increasing and will continue to increase you leftaard as people live longer.

I learned most of it on my own from reading and research. I could name every president by the time I was 9. I did take a honors history class in High School and finished quite well. I had a conservative teacher for that class. When I got to college I took American History 1 and 2, and had two liberals. None of them were bad though, just have an open mind about it and you will do fine.

@cr3861 I think that was just due to the awkwardness and ill will between the two. She could have done a better way of handling it but she ruined it from the start. I like it better in some ways than 1972, it was more interesting and better all around. Reynolds became the Washington Bureau chief after this so that more or less led up to the WNT job, plus he was actually experienced too. And I am glad you enjoyed it, and there will be more coming!

Well I just needed some extra classes so I took history. I kind of want to be a high school history teacher one day, everyone tells me I would do good.
The regular school classes don't teach the whole picture anyways, they have to Politically Correct so they leave out some stuff. Plus I enjoyed reading and learning by myself more anyways.

You know how Americans just WANT to hear that they don't have to pay taxes. Otherwise, had Obama done so, it would have been wise, but he risked re-election if he did that.

He didn't, the only reason he was choose for the VP spot was that he was more moderate than Henry Wallace was, and the party thought they could control Harry more than Wallace, they was wrong. He had the same plan as Ford later did as he wanted to stay in congress until he retired but he did not deny a call to service.

@rhd1974 None of the networks had time to make the maps. They all expected the follow the usual template the networks had from 1960 on, but NBC surprised everyone on the Monday before the election when they showed the big state map on The Today Show. This scarred CBS and ABC and they tried to copy it but they failed. Chancellor's plan worked, they won the ratings on Election Night 1976, and won the ratings during the whole season.

Very true. Reaganites like to blame the Democratic Congress for the abnormal budget deficit that occurred during his presidency, but they don't have room to talk considering Carter's presidency. Honestly, I think Reagan used his charisma to get votes.

How in the world can you say that Carter produced 4 balanced budgets? Is this the doctrine of saying something enough times that idiots will believe it? Reagan beat Carter in 1980 because Jimmy hadn't "balanced the budget". FYI, Nixon and Clinton are the only Presidents to have balanced budgets since whenever people starting keeping score.

LOL. Looks like him for sure, but I don't think it is.

  • @iamthem134
    @iamthem134 11 лет назад

I know. Reagan had huge budget deficits because of his huge, massive tax cuts and a recession followed. Bush 1 and Clinton at the beginning of his term raised taxes a little bit and the economy boomed just fine. Bush's tax cuts resulted in the recession we're in right now. Obama is doing alright, but could do better, but so far he has managed to stabilize the economy. However, I fear if he continues to fund the useless war in Syria, he risks jeopardizing it and turning it into Iraq pt. 2.
