  • David J and the Bauhaus Logo Controversy
David J Haskins, formerly of the post-punk/gothic rock bands Bauhaus and Love And Rockets is a newly published author who has written a memoir of his years in Bauhaus called WHO KILLED MISTER MOONLIGHT. Reviewer TV caught up with him at a bookstore where he was doing a signing and asked him about his business identities which were not exactly of unique origin. David J says he is the member of Bauhaus who wrote the seminal goth song "Bela Lugosi's Dead" which is attributed to being the first song of the goth genre, is over nine minutes in length and was recorded live in the studio in a single take.

Hat's off to Mr J, he barely flinched when the interviewer got the name of the book wrong! Pay attention Mr Reviewer :-)

What-the-fuck?! One hell of a way to blow an interview, by starting off with getting the title of an author's book, wrong.

ivorytower99 - Consider that back then there was no internet like we know it today, and the highest form of communication technology was the answering machine. Everything and everyone seemed farther away so it was much simpler as a punk band to name your band whatever and no one would care. You couldn't get away with that anywhere as easily today, but also today you can just google your band name to see if anyone else has it.

"It was time to kick the damned door down" - David j rare with some skeptical interviewer who asked if they were ziggy and the stardust players. Heard it somewhere at sometime but don't remember where. A record b side?

yes more than a few have. bauhaus was certainly on to something. you can say there were influenced by others to be sure, but they were consistent and novel enough to be a lot more than merely post punk imitators. give them another good listen and consider where the licks and arrangement came from. you can only 'accident' into tunes that good once or twice, not so consistently. may not be your fave or cup of tea, but the music holds.

David J was always the weakest member of Bauhaus, and he knows it. That's why he has to cut down Peter Murphy any chance he gets, and why even his brother stuck with Ash. I don't dislike him, but facts are facts.

If it wasn't for his baselines they would be half the band they. Think aboit every song you like, then listen to the bass.

You're saying that about the only one who actually knew how to talk to the press from the get go. Bro. It's not bad to not no what to say, but if you look at the history you'll see that David was the brains behind the "business" IMHO

um... no. sorry man. but don't get me wrong. david j was important. every member is. he is just the weakest of the 4. again, imo. but he does like to spill dirt on murphy a lot. kinda lame. and as far as business management goes, i'm not sure where you get that from, but seems to me that apart from his membership in rockets, the other 3 original bauhaus members have done much more with their musical careers. just sayin'. but, once again, bauhaus is probably one of my top 10 favorite bands of all time, no joke, so when i cut on david j, it's not meant to be hateful in any way.

without any one of the four bauhaus members, the band and its music wouldn't sound the same, for sure. i am not disagreeing there. in fact, i never said that, nor implied that. the band is such a great band, to me, that even the weakest member is still great. i mean, come on... nearly everyone thinks that way of ringo. yet he is still a great talent and the beatles would never have been the same without him. so, yeah... i agree with you. david j is simply not the driving force of the band. that would be murphy and ash, like most bands, the lead guitarist and singer are usually the creative force behind the band, for the most part. music is subjective, but one can usually see where the dynamics originate from with a little research, if anything. like song credits, for instance.

Hmmm.. then why are they still very much getting along? If David J is really 'cutting down' Peter, wouldn't Peter notice as I'm sure he certainly would?? They are still very much friends.. and playing together, or haven't you seen their latest touring schedule this year?
As for him being the weakest member.. again hmmm.... he was responsible for alot of the songwriting behind Bauhaus, and certainly with L&R. As showmen, certainly Peter and Daniel out-perform, but that says nothing about David's talent in many other ways. He might have been just a bass player with Bauhaus ~ but a very distinctive one at that. He also has a very successful solo career playing lead guitar and is still very much active in creating new scores and albums ~ next one he is hoping to put together in Prague ~ with a little help from his fans. What has his brother done lately in music? Absolutely nothing! So IMO, David is much more talented than his drumming brother.. at the very least! And I prefer his more honest personal music over Ash's bombastic style as of late. So yeah, David's #2 next to the maestro Peter in my books.
