That's rude, nard wasn't being disrespectful at all, just playful as he always is on all his interviews. Sort of reminded me of Dave Rowntree's reaction on Blur's interview with nard.
I'm pretty sure he does that because he's a stutterer and that's his way of masking it. Being a stutterer the first 16 years of my life, I recognize the tricks.
I think the term Goth like Grunge was kind of made up by the media and marketing agencies. Which is why Bands and artists like Peter Murphy, just outright don't claim any connection to. The bands that were the earliest examples of so-called Grunge, like Mudhoney, screaming trees, or Alice in chains, would just say that shit was added on later.
I think more likely, with the exception of The Sisters, "Goth" didn't exist when they started, there was no word for what they were doing, there was no scene until they created it, that's why they feel no connection to it. Siouxsie & The Banshees for example come more from the punk scene, and their first album is counted as one of the very first (and very best) post-punk albums. The moniker "Goth" came after.
I was around in the early/mid 80's listening to Sisters of Mercy, Lords of the New Church, etc...they were all called deathrock at the time, there was no goth. I didn't hear that term goth until the 90's and to me it seemed the fans were the goths and the music was deathrock.
Judging by the comments, Murphy's fans are stuck-up, humourless and too ignorant to even know who Nard-the fucking legend-wuar is. Too bad considering how much wit and meta/referential humour are defining elements of Bauhaus sound and lyrics
Literally witnessed the north of england being bombed by the nazi's during WW2. During the 70's it was a violently destitute and poor as modern day detroit is. This is why most of the sound is "darker" louder and more theatrical.
Are you accusing Peter of a goth disinformation conspiracy? Bauhaus, Siouxsie, The Sisters and the other foundational bands never associated with goth because they didn't want to be pigeonholed into one genre, one that didn't really exist until they came along. They admit to not understanding it and begrudgingly accept it at best. No wonder he's misinformed.
+Siren Nardwuar is pretty legendarily awkward. He's been around forever and yet never achieved anything better than underground fame. Thank god, he's got a unique personality and we wouldnt have it any other way.
@Kzierbold I don't consider Marilyn Manson "goth" (in the sense of Bauhaus, Siouxsie, and '80s goth) but I think what Peter meant by referring to Marilyn Manson as "goth" was that he didn't want to label himself as "goth" and that he wanted to distance himself from the bands that are considered "goth" now, such as Marilyn Manson.
I don't know anything about them now, but I have to say that they did put on good shows. Really nice, too, they seemed to be just as curious about us as we were of them. They opened for Siouxsie at the Hollywood Palladium in '86 - not a huge venue. Being a gothic kid in LA and hispanic, I realize we were like kids out of the Love & Rockets comic books to them. Peter Murphy seemed the same - curious about us, and not full of himself.
austenslost theres a line between simple human mistakes and being a complete self centered prick, and nardwuar crossed it. this is the only interview where i feel nardwuar really blew it.
Noah Buddy The problem with Narwuar is that he is too pushy with his interviews and likes to be the one in control of the pace so if somebody is rambling too much he'll interrupt and that's when the interviews get uncomfortable. Sonic Youth tried highjacking the interview when he interviewed them and Nardwuar turned into a crying "take myself too serious" lil bitch
Peter Murphy is such a gentleman, he kicked Nardwar's ass in a very polite way haha Seriously, Nardwar sometimes is pretty cool and easy going and kind and sometimes he is a troll. I have watched a couple of interviews in which he is decided to annoy the musician in question and then...I celebrate Blur for what they did to him.
It's Nardwuar, he does this to everybody. It's really quite funny when you get over the hero worship. And the research he does prior to his interviews was enough to net him an honorary history degree from the University of British Columbia.
Great story about Peter saying the merch is bootlegged etc.. I was living in LA in 2010 and Bloomingdale’s had a $450 Bauhaus t-shirt for sale lol. Also my cousin a screen printer had been making knockoffs for personal use since 1985 haha
That was totally fucking hilarious. That last bit where he's like trying to prompt him for the little diddy, and he shines him on 3 times is pure gold. Who was this Uberlame interviewer?
It would probably go about as well as mentioning the "I Word" to JG Thirlwell, who I've heard say "we don't use the I word," and a rumor exists about him punching an interviewer, who once dared to use it, saying he hated the term.
Peter John Joseph Murphy (n. 11 de julio de 1957, cerca de Northampton, Reino Unido), es el vocalista del grupo post-punk Bauhaus, además de poseer una amplia carrera en solitario, alcanzado su cenit comercial en 1990.
@wiregreyhounds Agreed wiregreyhounds.Nard comes off a bit of a clown but he comes prepared and he will inocently expose who you really are alot of the times. This was a good one.
it's seen as kind of cool to live in Istanbul nowadays. But he did it because of his talented Turkish wife who's a choreographer for a prestigious contemporary dance company there
@Nadwuar Dude, you're lucky you didn't catch Pete in a bad mood. You've really got balls. One would almost think a HC kid was interviewing him as a joke.
Yeah. But usually, they aren't people who know or listen to the music. I'd guess he was saying it that way just to annoy Peter Murphy - who doesn't deserve it. I love how PM got all perky when he was referred to as "Batman".
@DrMalcolm I met him briefly in 1985. He seemed like a pretty nice guy, but I heard he was hard to get along with. I met Love & rockets in 1986 and they were even nicer.
for astra-whatever, google lagartija. Never heard of Sacher, but since i'm a big fan of bauhaus, murphy, ash, and J, I'll look for it. Thanks, Dracula!!!
I agree, although I have heard people say it that way. It's a German word after all, and it's not totally surprising that some people don't know how to say it correctly.
Whoa...Nadrwuar got schooled TWICE: that's the first time I've ever seen someone correct him in an interview, the guy usually knows his facts like a human encyclopedia!
I do not know if this guy John Ruskin (aka NArdwuar ) can read all this comments but , i guess it's harsh for the interviewed character when they are speaking and anwerind the questions , you interrupt 'em quitting the microphone... not only harsh for the character as it's harsh for us the audience.. Peter started really charming and humble this interview ... hope you can understand that concern of us the audience.
My understanding is that the term 'gothic' music associated as a genre or classification didn't really come about until the late eighties or early nineties, roughly. The same thing for 'deathrock', although that was probably more familiar to the bands of those times. I don't think the majority of the bands that were labeled as such were deliberately trying to be associated in those ways at all. They just had their ideas and did what they did. You have the original voices, then you have an evolution of exaggerated versions from other bands that followed in their footsteps (sometimes). It's the fans that generally create those terms as a way to identify with whatever they listen to, and when you say something enough, it starts to spread and stick.
@101090MOE Ha ha he could be researching tons of stuff and still not know how to pronounce words. But actually, I think he's just doing that to annoy Mr Murphy
Sorry if I offended your feelings. Maybe my reaction was too emotional, but I didn't like his humour and I think he wasn't well prepared for this interview, cheers
have you heard anything by Peter Murphy? He is an incredibly talented musician and a marvellous perfromer. maybe your the one who should continue taking the pills as obviously you seem to be pretty out of it.
