- How To Fix Your Air Conditioning On A Honda Odyssey. A common issue with 2005 to 2010 Honda Odyssey A/C's is a faulty relay which causes your compressor clutch to not cycle. In turn, no cold air. This video shows you how to easily check and replace the R4 A/C Compressor Clutch Relay which may fix your A/C issue for under $10.00 if you experience similar symptoms.

You sir, are our hero today! I was on a road trip with 3 young kids driving through NorCal driving in our 2007 Odyssey when the AC stopped blowing cold air. It was over 100° outside. I stopped in Lodi (Oh Lawd, like CCR!) 🎵🎸 hoping I might find something to help, and immediately found your video. It was so clear and concise to follow. We drove to an AutoZone, and I got the R4 A/C Compressor Clutch Relay. I swapped it out for the old one like you instructed, and it fixed our AC! Thank you so much for all you help! I’m so grateful to you for giving me the opportunity to feel like a bad ass mama for showing my kids a DIY ethic is important. 😎💕
The fact that you stayed calm for your kids, diagnosed the issue, researched the fix and then sourced out the parts / tools whilst on a road trip - absolutely makes you a bad ass mama!
I can't thank you enough. You are gold. I did exactly what you posted and my AC problem was solved.
2009 Honda Odyssey the cold air would come and go thanks for the big help the relay took care of the problem right away thank you very much .
This was such a big help!! SO clear, and perfectly step by step. I've never done anything other than just changing my wiper blades and filling my wiper fluid before. But I followed your process exactly on my 2005 Odyssey and it worked perfectly. Thank you SO MUCH for what you do! Genuinely appreciated.
Thank you so much for making this video. My car was struggling for past 1 year with battery drainage and ac not working…got battery replaced but still was having the same issue.
Finally your video helped me. When I took the fuse out, it was clear that it’s broken. I could hear sounds when jiggling the fuse. Replaced the fuse and everything is back to normal. ac is working and battery is not draining anymore (no more jump starting every day😊)
fingers crossed!
I followed the instructions and it worked like a charm. Avoided 1000$ repair recommended by dealer. Thanks a lot.
Had the same issue. Pulled my relay and it sounded like a rattle! Thank you for this info. Saved my family hundreds of dollars.
You’re awesome!
My a/c was fine a week ago then came this heat and low and behold my a/c compressor stopped engaging just the same as your video. I’m headed to the parts store to try and buy a relay. Hopefully I can resolve this problem as quickly as your video shows!
Thanks again!👍
It worked! This video is exactly what I needed and saved me $100s or $1000s in repairs. Your step-by-step instructions were very on-point and very helpful. Thank you Thank you Thank you!
Thank you for watching and glad this fix solved your issue.
Thank you so much. So far it is working after I replaced this part. ❤😊
I never like or leave comments. But thank you SO MUCH for this video. Family leaves for vacation in 2 days and I run into this ac problem. Thought I was looking at replacing the compressor but your short and to the point video saved me thousands. Can’t thank you enough!
Glad it helped and solved your problem!
Dude, THANK YOU!! A/C stopped working at 8pm last night before a whole bunch of family is flying in for a reunion today. Found this video last night, woke up. changed the relay, Boom!, problem solved. You saved my weekend!! Thanks
Enjoy your family reunion!
Dude! Thank you so much for making this video! This is exactly what my problem was, and I have AC in the van again!
Awesome!!!
You saved me a lot. I was about to have to replace the compressor and everything and did what you did and it was the fuse! Thank you!
I’m glad to hear you watched the video before spending the money on replacement parts.
This might be the clearest DIY video I've seen on anything (certainly about this problem), and it saved me at least $1,000 (which is what I was quoted by a "recommended shop" to "replace the AC compressor" after I dropped the vehicle off for them to diagnose. It took me less than 10 mins to do as instructed in this guide, and cost me $9.49 for the replacement relay, and this was the first video that came up in my search! It seemed too good to be true... but it was too well explained and easy enough to test myself, which I did before getting a second estimate today... and am I sure glad I did because it went exactly as described in this video. I can't thank you enough!
Glad to hear you were able to resolve the issue!
Don't ya hate the readiness with which people will rip off others?
worked for me on 2010 Ody. thanks.
Thank You !!!
The first really hot day of the year and my AC is not working. I did exactly as you said and my AC kicked on right away. Also, for the past couple of years my AC wouldn't start working for a few days at least every spring but then it would eventually kick on and work all summer so that may be a symptom of the relay on its way out. Thanks again !!!
Glad to hear this solved your issue.
Wow, this worked! Thank you for making this video and saving people hundreds of dollars!
I’m glad it helped you out!
Thank you so much!! what’s crazy it was missing! they are doing the body work on my car after work.. Someone probably took it and forgot to replace it. Long story short you save me money! my Husband ❤️ and I appreciate it. We have six kids and this helped a lot. You are the Bomb!!!
Glad to hear the video helped.
Thanks for this video, I did it on my Honda odyssey and it really works, god bless you 🙏 I saved more the 1000.00 dollars
Awesome - glad it worked out and solved the issue.
Thk u I purchased this part installed it ac is cold thz. Saved me alot of dollars
Wonderful!!!
This worked for me, thank you very much!
Turns out this was why my AC wasn't working. Thanks for putting me on the correct track. I swapped the relays around, but funny enough, my fans are both working so there wasn't anything wrong with the relay after all. Go figure.... Cheers. I've got you a beer if you wanna come and claim it :)
Ummm - I’m always ready for a beer!!!
Thanks! Just fixed mine today from your vid!! Sub'd
My issue was the driver side worked great, blew cold air as expected. Passenger side only blew hot air, rear didn’t blow at all. I just popped off both fuses (relay 1 and 4), shook them to to if they sounded broken which they didn’t. I swapped them and put them back into the fuse box. Everything now works fine. Nothing seemed unseated so this could be a temporary fix with one of the fuses going bad perhaps. But for now just switching them fixed it immediately. Thanks for sharing. Will probably buy two new fuses and just replace them.
I like that idea - replace them anyways as it’s an inexpensive touch at this point. If this happens in the future as described, listen for a clicking sound from the dashboard because a gear in the temperature blend door actuator might be the issue.
Good video. I learned that it isn't my AC compressor - I can hear it coming on - but no cold air.
Thank you so much you for the perfect help, It worked as well after I changed the relay.
Awesome!!!
Very good job thank you sir.
A mechanic can charge to you at least $1400 to do that. He going to tell you that he had to change the compressor, hoses, etc.. I trust in mechanics on you tube. I had the same problem, I going to get a new relay and see what happen. Thank you so much sir..for your time and share your knowledge with us!
Let me know how you make out.
Did your relay replacement fix your issue
@@blairman76 I tried with the relay. But the problem I think is in the compressor pulley . Some times when I start the car , the a/c doesn't blow nothing, after a few seconds or minutes when I cross by a little bump in the street, the a/c starts working again.
Did u get it fixed? What was the issue?
@@wealthmindset1626 was not the relay. Is just the a/c blower. Sometimes stop working but I knock the blower and start again. My a/c blower is bad.

Hello! This was a great video thank you. I have 2015 Odyssey. Would it also be the r4 compressor fuse?
@YourHomeGarage - Thanks for this video. My 2008 Odyssey AC is cooling but with very low intensity. In other words cold air coming from AC vents is not cold enough so it becomes very annoying when in summer daytime temperature here in TX is above 100 degree. It seem it is working 50%. Any suggestion please?
Thanks. Saved me lots
Looks promising for my Odyssey👍
I definitely will do it tomorrow because only hot air coming out. Thank u for the video

@@YourHomeGarage it won’t work. I will let the AC mechanic to look on it. Thanks

Thanks so much.
Woah that's easy. Thanks!
Had an intermittent problem on a Subaru Forester recently. Was taken to a shop, they recovered the refrigerant/recharged with dye added. Charged $125 and said that it was fixed, but the problem persisted. AC worked fine on startup, but 15 minutes or so down the road, it quit. I got the car, immediately tried a new relay, problem solved. Subaru dealer relay, $30 charge for part, did the labor for free.
Thanks for adding this to the comments - I’m sure it will assist others with the same issue.
Thanks for the info. I will try this InshaAllah

I have a 03 honda odyssey and my system doesnt get cold until i go on decent drive on freeway. Added extra fan to condenser but doesn't seem to help. Changed control unit both txv condenser and compressor and hi side switch. Any other suggestions on what it could be?
Thanks for this helpful video! I was researching why my Odessey's AC wasn't working, assuming I needed to leak check and recharge. I came across this vid and realized the clutch wasn't cycling on, switched relays and it worked! I have a new relay ordered. I do have a question, I hooked up my gauge to see if I might need coolant and the low pressure showed over 100psi, and when I detached it it continued to hiss out air/coolant until I put the cap back on. Is this just because the compressor isn't kicking on? I didn't think to check it when I had the working relay in and it was cycling...
The low pressure valve can sometimes stick in the open position - try blipping it quickly with a small screwdriver to reset it.
I have a question hopefully you can help me. My AC works and it was really cold with no problems all of a sudden only cold AC blows out of one of the vents. The other three blows regular temperature like from outside. What could that be?
Could this cause the battery to not charge ? We've replaced the alternator and battery and no power after a few days
My van has almost similar issue but only the passenger side is blowing cold air. Driver side is blowing hot. Can this relay issue still apply?
👍THANK SO MUCH BROTHER 👍
is it the same for 2019 honda odessey models too
Great job..I hope that's the fix4 Mt van
Let me know if it did the trick.
I'm gonna try this..because I have been having these same issues...so far I've replaced my battery and alternator.....

question - can i drive my car to the auto shop with this relay removed to get the new one?
U CAN BUY COOLANT AND BE SHOWN HOW TO PUT IT IN AT AUTO STORES JUST AN FYI WE ARE GOING TO DO THIS VIDEO TO FIX THE FUSE ISSUE NOW!!! THANKS FOR THE HELP❤
I recently bought a 04 odyssey with 67,000mi it had sat for awhile and when I test drove it there was no noise coming from inside the dash. When I drove it off the lot the A/C was running and now when I turned the key to the ignition position I hear a steady clicking from the dash. Yesterday I replaced the cabin filter and it wasn't that dirty and found no debris. Got any tips. Great video too 👍
The clicking noise "inside the dash" could be the result of a failed door actuator. The teeth on the plastic gear inside could have sheared and are now slipping. The actuator is located in the drivers footwell, above the gas pedal and slightly to the right, tucked into the dash.
My rpm go up when turning on my ac but it blows hot air can this still be it

Dealing with some weird issues... seems like the wiring for the AC mag clutch is faulty somewhere. Thought relay was bad, replaced it, but then the clutch wouldn't start unless I pressed real hard on the top of the relay -- like either the relay itself or the connection crimps are loose. Tried tightening those, then reinserted the relay - same thing. Had to bypass it temporarily with a screw thru the top of the relay. Confirmed Freon pressure is good while doing that, but I need to figure out the *correct* fix for the AC mag clutch relay. Current "fix" is surely dangerous... I assume?
Meanwhile, both AC fans decided not to work anymore. Blows cold on both sides while driving, but warm at idle.
Thanks in advance for any help you can offer on either issue.
This can be frustrating, especially as many areas are experiencing record breaking temperatures.
Pushing down the relay to engage the AC Mag Clutch is where I would start to investigate. Bypassing the relay long term isn't a good strategy as it's meant to help protect the electrical system, but I just did something similar on my home AC to narrow down a bad capacitor - so we do find creative ways to troubleshoot!
When you look at the fuse box - can you:
Inspect the inside fuse panel with a flashlight - examine the fuses and more so the wiring in and around the fuse panel. Dark, discoloured and burned wires are obvious issues that require attention. Wires with bubbles in the insulation are signs of overheating.
How old is the vehicle?
Great vid. I have a 2009 honda odyssey and the battery was dead when picking up from lot we purchased the other day. Once it was charged, the AC no longer functions /turn on (literally no lights) and one of our back power windows makes sound but will not roll down or up.🥺
The day before all worked including all windows when initially looking and test driving the van which needed the battery jumped again that day too. We had battery checked out afterwards which is confirmed it is a healthy battery.
Any suggestions on where to start to investigate; before taking to dealership or shop to diagnose?
Thank you for your time in advance.
If you bought it from a dealership lot, then I would take it back. Though I think you have an electrical parasitic drain issue - basically something is running or drawing current when it shouldn’t. I would start with your AC relay. When the fuse goes bad, it constantly tries to engage the air conditioning compressor even when the vehicle is turned off. As a result, it keeps trying to engage the compressor until the battery is totally drained. The AC relay, which is only a few dollars may just fix your issue. Plus, when you pull the relay and shake it - if it rattles it’s bad, if there is no rattling then your back to having a parasitic draw test. But I think this should fix your problem. Swap it out with a new one. If it does not work then please take your van to a real mechanic to do an electrical system analysis.
@@YourHomeGarage Thank you for your suggestions!
I have 2009 Honda Odyssey EX-L. AC blows only when turned all the way down and then works fine. first go all the low and then can adjust the temperature. The heating blows same hot air regardless of temperature control. any thoughts!
Unfortunately, there are many things that can affect the operation of the A/C system. This sounds a lot like an A/C compressor issue. However, it could be a relay or switch problem as well that’s causing the inconsistent operation of your A/C system.
For the A/C compressor - start with this check list:
- Strange Sound; if you hear strange noises when you turn on the A/C, then it's probably the compressor.
- If it blows warm air when the A/C is on, then it’s likely low refrigerant or compressor failure.
- Look for any apparent fluid leaks
- A stuck clutch
my air conditioner is working on the passenger side with cool air, and on the driver's side, there is warm air coming out.
My RPM's do fluctuate when turning on the AC. I tried a recharge kit and the pressure gauge suggested the condenser was not kicking on. The belt is spinning, but I don't think the compressor clutch is. Recommendations?
Try these trouble shooting steps:
- did you check/change the AC clutch fuse as suggested in this video
- a failing AC relay
- bad switches ie low/high pressure
- check the wiring harness
- low or high refrigerant charge
- or maybe the clutch itself is just bad
nice
Hi my honda odyssey stop blowing out. Old air from my ac and i put in ac pro from autozone and blown out cold but when turn off my van next day ac wasnt cold no more maybe should try this out 🤔🤔🤔 ill check fuse
Keep me posted on if the relay was bad.
My 2012 Honda Odyssey EX has warm air blowing from Drivers side and super cold air blowing from the passenger side, i tried adding the refrigerant but when i tried adding it compressor would not engage, so what could be causing the issue, highly appreciate your help and advise.
This is a statement that I ran across from Honda's Service News dated July 2012 - sounds as if it pertains to your situation.
"If the left dashboard side vent is warmer than the right side vent with the A/C on, chances are the
evaporator core isn’t being flooded with enough liquid refrigerant, causing it to fully vaporize halfway
through the core. As a result, the side of the core with some refrigerant (the right duct) stays cold, while the
side that’s fully vaporized (the driver’s duct) is warmer by about 20 degrees (or more in some cases).
The most likely cause for this problem is a low refrigerant charge, possibly from a leak. Another culprit
might be a restricted line or component that’s cutting the flow of liquid refrigerant.
To find and fix this problem, just follow the A/C PERFORMANCE leg of the online job aid A/C Diagnostic
Process. If the vent temperatures even out, you’re done. If they don’t, continue with normal
troubleshooting and check the system for restrictions.
For more info, be sure to check out self-study module ACC23, A/C System Checks & Monitoring in the
dealer’s Online University"
Make sure you rule is out first - check that the A/C blend motor is working properly.
@@YourHomeGarage Thank you so much for your video, I started out by adding refrigerant and then ended up changing the relay, worked fantastically !!! Thank you so much for your fantastic easy to do Video !!!
It would be most helpful to include a description of the parts needed? Great video!
Great suggestion on including the part needed. The challenge that I’ve run into when posting specific part numbers is that each retailer uses a different part number. So, by placing the “R4 A/C Compressor Clutch Relay” in my description, everyone can now use a dealership or aftermarket retailer and ask for the proper replacement part. Hopefully that assists with your suggestion.
Hello I have an issue my Honda is blowing hot air and the blower is running and has the freon placed so I don’t know what’s the issue
If the A/C blows hot air after recharging, then you maybe dealing with a leak. An effective way to find leaks is to vacuum the system.
U just save me 2,000 $ 👌🏿
When the fuse is bad, does that cause the fan not to blow as much/hard?
Your vehicles HVAC system could be experiencing one of the following:
- Air intake is clogged
- A blown fuse in the ventilation system
- Electrical issues such as a bad relay
- Blower motor is damaged
- Blower resistor is malfunctioning
- A broken hose in the ventilation system
My mechanic just said I need a compressor kit and the CTS censor and approx $1800 to replace both with their expensive hourly labor fee. Should i try this fix first??
Yes - especially if you encounter the same symptoms as I did. At the end of the day it’s only a few dollars.
@YourHomeGarage truth! I'll try this over the weekend to double check before blowing all that money for some a/c lol thank you so much for this!!!
Please keep me posted - thank you.
@@melanytries Did it work?
How about if the front raw a/c doesn't blow but the a/c blows from second raw to back raw.?
If you've got cold air in the rear that seems to rule out a problem with the actual AC cooling system (compressor, freon, evaporators). Most likely to be a problem with the air flow control (flaps, diverters).
If it revs a little when turning ac on and off would it mean it’s not the relay?
It's normal for engine revs to fluctuate a bit with the AC on. When the compressor clutch engages and drives the AC compressor, a bit of extra engine power is used by the compressor, and engine RPM will fall a bit. When the clutch disengages, that extra power isn't required, and engine RPM will increase.
Also check for a loose alternator belt - if the AC load is added on the engine, the rpm’s can fluctuate.
Didn't work in my 2006 Odyssey. Clutch activates, but RPMs never surge when active even with a new relay. Still blows hot air and if it is a clogged evap well that's probably $1000 for book time hours if not more In my case with over 213000 miles, the van will be scrapped.
Funny how this was never a recall considering baking In a hot vehicle IS a safety hazard.
Could the fuse still be bad even if it doesn’t make that rattle noise?
Yes
will this work for a 2002 honda odessey
If you are experiencing inconsistent cooling, not hearing a click from the compressor or no cold air - then this is a quick test and check. Especially, if you pull out the fuse and it rattles like something is loose inside. Your primary fuse box will be slightly didn’t than the later model shown in the video so just Google the diagram for your year and locate the clutch relay fuse.
Do I really need to disconnect the negative cable on my battery to change this relay?
It’s always a safe practice to do so. The minimal effort needed to disconnect the battery and drain the surface charge outweighs the risk of accidentally causing circuit issues.
5:05 I changed it without disconnecting
Adding, it comes out cold at my feet no air (hot nor cold) comes out from the face-vent.
I would check two things before getting leaning towards testing the system - check the cabin air filter and then focus on the Mode Control Motor.
Can you do this without disconnecting the negative wire
Every time I’m in the fuse box, I disconnect the negative terminal. It’s just a safer practice. There will be individuals that say you don’t have too, but I think the two minutes it takes to disconnect it outweighs any accidents.
Were did you buy the fuse
Auto Value - but just go to any local auto parts store near you.
How abour honda odyssey 2002???
That's what I have. I don't think it's my switch because I can hear the compressor come on and the RPMs change.
We have a 2003 Odyssey, and their isn't a fuse listed for AC. There is one listed for the rear AC, but not one for the front, or overall system. Any ideas?
Here are some starting points since I’m not sure what the exact symptoms are:
Check if the rear AC is working. This would indicate the compressor is fine - then no need to investigate that further.
Remaining likely failures are the interior air temperature checker, which is unlikely to be the cause, or the HVAC control unit itself, which seems to be a common failure.
Also check the heating system(assuming the weather allows it). If you ask for 85 degrees, does it get there? How's the fan? If you ask for 85 degrees and force the fan to full speed, does it eventually get to 85 degrees? These would be indications of the interior temperature sensor being bad.
Note that the interior temperature sensor being bad would definitely NOT affect the fan speed control, which is yet another finger pointing at the climate control unit itself.
@@YourHomeGarage Hi, we were able to check all relays and fuses, and all were fine. So, we measured the pressure in the" Low" line, and found it was around 7. So just to check the idea that low pressure might keep the compressor from engaging, we added a bit of refrigerant and the clutch suddenly engaged, and the system started working. We added a full can of refrigierant, just for proof of concept, and sure enough the system in terms of cold air worked ok.
So, this van has 200k miles on it, but until a few months ago, AC was fine. So, I expect that there is a leak that needs detecting, and the entire system flushed and filled professionally. But, at least today, during our PA heatwave, it's great that the AC works.
Thanks for the great video!
Glad to hear you were able to get it up and going. Hopefully you bought yourself enough time to figure out the real issue.
Wish i had this video before spending $900 to have mechanic replace entire compressor as I was told the clutch was bad but they no longer sell just the clutch, that you have to buy an entire compressor. 🤦🏻♀️
At least now you have the benefit of more knowledge and resources to ask a technician different questions if this situation were to occur again. Only you can answer if the $900 was worth the investment to solve the AC problem and provide comfort on your drive. I don’t want to begrudge a mechanic shop, but sometimes replacing components is more economical than spending hours diagnosing the issue for a little part that is failing. Either way, at least you’re keeping cool now in the heat and thank you for the comment.
My 2012 Honda odyssey had this issue with heat during winter and the Honda dealership fixed it and now I'm having AC issue now when it's getting hot. What could be the cause??
Can you further define AC issues - what exactly are you experiencing?
It's blowing warm air from the driver's side
@@MsTupee Okay - I could ask more questions, but here are a few thought starters. If the refrigerant is low, it will only flood part of your evaporator core which starts off on the passenger side - this means the drivers side will be warm. If there is a restriction in the system, such as one of the lines, then the warm air could easily be the outcome. On your Honda, there could be an issue with the air mix door - this will send out a trouble code for easier diagnostic.
It could be A/C condenser, which Honda extended the warranty to 10 years since initial purchase of the vehicle. But independent mechanics also said the A/C compressor can be effected too because of the originally defective Honda A/C condenser. This issue may be affecting your 2012 Odyssey too.
Do I have to disconnect my battery before changing the relay?
Always best to disconnect before doing anything - let me know if this solves your issue.
@@YourHomeGarage I will give it a try and can I take out the relay with my hands because I don’t have tools?
+Bor Po The fuse will be hard to pull without a flathead screwdriver or fuse puller. Try to borrow some tools if you can. Plus you’re going to need a wrench or socket to remove the negative battery cable.
@YourHomeGarage why disconnect battery?
It’s a safe practice while working in the fuse box. Too many accidents can happen, so for the small amount of time it takes to disconnect; I find it worth the effort.
Sadly this wasn't my issue. Freon levels are good and so is compressor clutch.
What is it then?
My compressor turns on but cycles on and off even with the AC always On....
Meaning SOMETIMES it blows cold sometimes it doesn't.
Never seen this before and no one else has this problem except like one other person (AC only works 100% if its on Max 18 it should work on 20)
@@Matanumi no clue but I'd venture to say freon is low.
There could be several reasons why your air conditioner is not consistently blowing cold air. Possible causes could be low refrigerant, faulty compressor, a clogged system, a leak in the system or a malfunctioning blend door.
What if the air is cold but not súper cold ?
If your air is blowing cool but not cold - the problem could be a clogged cabin filter, the cooling fan, rad issues or a recharge is needed.
Also... do you know where I would be able to buy these R4 and R5 relay switches?
Most auto parts stores should carry them - for me I went to Auto Value.
@@YourHomeGarage Thanks! Seems like my blower in the front middle isn't working. Only the side blowers by the drivers and passenger windows are blowing (near the rear-view mirrors). Could it also be the R5 relay switch?
I think my R4 is also shot, because cool air only comes out when I first start the car, and it's been sitting cool in the garage... but after driving a few minutes, only warm air comes out. And I don't think I ever hear the compressor kicking in when I turn on the AC
Where your fans in the front working?
Yes, my fans were still working. Fans are connected to a few systems such as the AC and the ECM / PCM.
👍😁
this man is genius. thanks for sharing!
Good video but your Mike volume is to low, had to wear ear buds to hear you
Thank you for the input - I think I corrected that issue on my newer videos.
Clutch cycles. Is recharged and to proper pressure. Blows hot air out of the vents.
Okay - try to look at a couple of simple things :
- dirty condenser
- dirty evaporator
- clogged cabin filter
Do you have an OBD2 sensor that can pick up a bad AC pressure switch?
