Wonderful to see and hear you with these Olds. I started out with the Olds Ambassador in about 1949. Now have also a Recording, also Super, Ambassador, and Mendez cornets. Surprisingly the Ambassador cornet has been my favorite to play. But,alas those days are over now. I will pass these on to grandsons. Olds is just wonderful.
My wife bought me a surprise gift from a pawn shop. It was an Olds super trumpet in great shape (1959)😊😊😊. She didn't know what she was getting for $120.00 and was afraid i wouldn't like it.
Mr. Dillard, I greatly appreciate your Web site and the RUclips videos. During breaks at work, I find a video or two to enjoy. I especially liked the comparison/contrast of the three Olds trumpets. My first horn was a student-model Olds cornet back in the late 1950s. I wasn't able, however, to find the trumpets in the video on the HornTrader site. My guess is that such fine horns, once posted, were purchased quickly. Please keep up the great work! Best, Kent Williams
Hi Kent, Olds Made really fine horns. I try and video as much as possible. I probably wouldn't record a Cornet unless it was a Olds Recording Cornet. Thank you for your kind words. Stay Tuned To The HornTrader! Steve
Hi Mr. Dillard. I enjoy watching your trumpet videos specifically the Benge and olds videos. You are very fortunate to have access to wonderful trumpets, i look forward to more videos
Thanks for this video-- very interesting. I have a 56 recording, and a 63 super-- I mostly end up playing the super, as it works better for me for lead work. The recording is more comfortable on my hands, but more tiring to play up high all night. Maybe one of these days you could do a similar video comparing the olds super and the benge 3x (or one of your burbank equivalents)...
Wonderful Olds trumpets! Hey Steve I’ve got a question on Olds bore sizes. I’ve got an Olds from the 30s. Mine is stamped LLM. It measures .468 at second valve slide. But interestingly it measures .453 at first and third valve slide. Is it typical to have different sizes in the slides?
You should of used an LA Olds Super so that the bracing and tuning slide brace would have been the same as the ones on the Olds Super Recording. The Fullerton ones are a bit different.
The super sounded the brightest and the recording the most warm with the super recording between. I Have a super with a few dents and the lacquer gone. Still it's what I started on. . .
Hi Steve I love your videos. All very interesting. Are these step bore horns? The two versions of the Recording both have that somewhat round sound without much of an edge like the Martin Committee and Z horns from Yamaha so I wondered if they had similar bore shape
I originally found your channel while searching for Irving Sarin (My former instructor) You had one of his old, silver Bach's. Though I went on to become a guitar instructor, I remember my student model Olds feeling very "airy" compared to my Bach. I'm sure it wasn't anywhere near the quality of these horns but I was wondering if you found this to be true with Olds horns? Although I've "lost my lip" YEARS ago, I love your vids and very much appreciate the beauty of the trumpet....from years of playing.
***** Welcome Back So many variables can make a horn feel or sound airy. I've never know of that characteristic for Olds Horns. My very first trumpet was an Olds Studio and I've owned and played several dozen since then. Olds made very fine quality horns. Stay Tuned To the HornTrader! Steve
Hey Steve! How's things? For some reason your Olds clip is coming up as 'video not available' for sone reason...never had this problem with any of your clips before...is there a new setting from your or my end that isn't set up correctly?? Cheers and hope you're well! Mick from Melbourne!
Mick I think it is because I used 3rd party music in the last 20 seconds of the video with the slide show of horns at the end. Sorry about that mate. I'm Working on it to record my own music for these videos now. Stay Tuned To the HornTrader! Steve
Hi Mr. Dillard! I am a high school trumpet player and I am looking into investing in a new horn. I plan on continuing my music career in college and I would like to focus on jazz playing but I need a horn that can do it all(orchestral, jazz, lead). Any recommendations?

I'm really interested in getting a super recording. but how do they play? i just don't want to spend a lot of money on a horn thats ok but not great. I'm currently playing on a bach Stradivarius37 bell. how do super recordings compare to a strad?
Super is super, super recording different and not my favorite of three, still its own warm and even toned sound is great. For me, and it saves a few pesos... is that Recording. I too will say that the Ambassadors are , LA vintage and early Fullerton, or before the reconfiguration is a pro horn as well with minor modifications in the area of the choice in mouth piece, graduated lead-pipe for some and nothing more. What is your take on the Ambassador in your realm of taste relative to its place among the loftier Olds 'stars' .
@@HornTrader lol. I was watching the first part where you were showing the horns, on my laptop and was having a hard time seeing the horns. I was just being funny. They’re beautiful! I almost bought a 1954 LA Studio the other day.

Awesome demo! I would have loved to have seen the Mendez model along with these Supers. Thanks! Frank
The old recording seemed warmer but still with more sass

Great horns, great player =‘s seriously super.🎺
That was a treat
I the like the recording with the 3rd slide mechanism
I agree Very ergonomic. Also the long trombone style water keys are very cool as well.
