Thank you kindly, Pep. I've to way too many horns now, but it's a real pleasure to have these four. :) I should be doing a Recording trumpet and Recording cornet vid in the next few days. I'd also like to compare the Recording trumpet and a Benge trumpet; they both produce a very vibrant, clear tone. Again, thanks for commenting.
Hi Jonathan, I am loving the Mendez I bought from you. My playing style is of the Chet Baker school and the horn gives me that soft and airy sound I strive for. The raw brass golden hue truly glows in certain light levels as though it has some internal light source! The most beautiful horn I have ever owned! Thanks again. Ran
Ran; I saw a Mendez for sale a few days ago and was thinking of you. :) Your Mendez is such a nice horn; one of the nicest vintage horns I think I've had. I'm so glad you're enjoying it. And I can't think of it fitting better than with the style you describe. Thanks so very much for letting me know you're getting along well with it. :) Continued best wishes, Ran.
Always look forward to your RUclips videos no exception with this presentation, very entertaining, all the horns had a great sound. Hope you’re feeling well. I purchased a CB 5000 yts a sweet sounding free blowing horn I am having fun with. Lol people don’t realize how much fun us gear-heads have with our brass toys ...hope to hear from you soon I am always looking for your content🎺 9
Thank you very much! Always good to hear from you. I've got the CB 5000 with the larger, standard bell. Sometimes wish it had the thinner bell, but it's a great horn. CB's are definitely great values, aren't they?
Hey, Rick, good to hear from you! :) The best thing about my recent purchases is that my wife is still talking to me! :) (She should throw me out, frankly, but she's being nice. Kind of makes me wonder what's going on. :) Great horns, though. Thanks for listening - always nice to hear from you!
Hello Jonathon , what is your set up to record , mic , computor program ? Say , try to find 'Alice Parker" and my "Love is an Artubus' and play it on the cornet I play it on my Olds Special cornet Bach 7C and Curry TC and I must confess I think it sounds nice . Any Christmas song sounds great on the cornet. ; "Of the Fathers Love Begotten " Merry Christmas and a blessed New Year to you and all . P. S I sure would like a crack at that Recording cornet if you ever decide to part with it .
My reording setup is not up at the moment, or I'd give you details. I don't remember the pieces. It's simple, a small mixer, one mic, plugged into a new(ish) Iphone for HD recording. When I get it set back up, I need to do one video on my setup; I know it's interesting and I've been asked by others. It'd down for Christmas visitors, so I'll need to get it up soon. I actually have a Puje on the way. I'll comparte it to a trumpet, cornet and probably flugel. The Olds Recording cornet is a very nice little horn. I prefer trumpet, probably because of the more open entry, but it's nice cornet. Once the Puje gets in, I'll have to decide what I'm going to keep. Not to be blasphemous, but I've considered having a trumpet receiver put on the Recording cornet and the leadpipe opend just a bit. But, as the brass tech mentioned, it won't be a cornet after this and it will probably lose its pure vintage value, so I'm trying to decide. Decisions, decisions, right? :)
With vintage horns, it seems the older the horn, the higher its value; if the condition is reasonable. I’ve never had a Standard Olds, but I’ve tried to get a few. Some say the Olds Standard was the predecessor of the Super Recording; which would be very interesting. :)
I've noticed a difference between your older videos and the more recent ones. Not that there's anything wrong with the old ones, they're straightforward descriptions of various horns with your personal impressions, very useful and helpful. But it seems you're more relaxed now, and funny. (The "Roomful of Musicians" was great. You should make it a running gag.) You seem to be hitting your stride as a RUclips artist. Maybe you should consider doing videos on other subjects, which might have a wider appeal?
Mark; Thank you, so kind of you to comment so. I have wondered recently if I'm talking to much; glad to know it's not a complete turn off to everyone. :) A very good idea, too; I'll give it considerable thought. Have a great week, and thank you for the kind, considerate words.
Probably '47 or '48 looks like. I've got an Olds Standard as well - one of the finest sounding horns I've ever played. :) www.robbstewart.com/olds-trumpet-and-cornet-serial-numbers
Jonathon, just think if you had An Olds Super Recording, that's what I'm holding out for, bang for the $, the Super does have the sound. You are absolutely correct about a mouthpiece change bringing out the sound of a particular instrument. I play a a Megatone 3C for most of my playing, my Custom Ambassador, it's the Bomb, my Mendez Long Cornet, a 10 3/4 EW works best for it, my Holton "48" Revelation, a 1 1/2C, or a Yamaha 15C4, it makes a big difference. If you don't have a lot in the Ambassador, put a Pilczuk R45X on it, and some Heavy C Caps, it'll play right along with or better than the Super. I didn't believe it until I got the Pilczuk pipe. You be safe with the Covid ramping up, I enjoy your Comparisons......Tim
Hey, Tim, thanks for the comments. I've looked into Pilczuk leadpipes but never pulled the trigger on one. :) Ambassadors can be good horns, and with mods like yours you should be thrilled. As for a Super Recording; it's in my plans. Right after I win the lottery. :) Mendez cornets are so cool; I just read of one guy that sneaks his in for group play and no one knows his is the only cornet. Very neat stuff. :) And yes; I'm a firm believer that each horn has a 'best' mouthpiece. Thanks for commenting!
@@JonathanMilam1, it just so happens that was the case of my Mendez, the original owner back in 1958 sat 1st chair in the U of I orchestra with this horn, he went on to be a Professor there. He then handed it down to his daughter who sat 1st chair with the U of I orchestra as well with this Mendez. She passed very untimely, and he sold it to me. I had to audition in order to purchase it. Sweet people!
When I get a vintage horn in, like a Conn I have from '37, I often wonder who has played it in previous years, where it's been, and so on. It must be nice to know the history of your horn. Very nice - thanks for sharing. :)
I have never played a Kuhnl & Hoyer... I've tried to purchase a few but they are not common in the United States where I live. Great question - and thanks for contributing.
No; two were from Ebay, one from Reverb.com, and one from a multi-listing self-sale listing (like Marketplace.com on Facebook). The Mendez has a very nice feel to it, but needs straigtening and solder work and was missing both triggers. The Recording cornet needs a bit of dent work on the leadpipe, but is a magnificent player. The Recroding trumpet has a few pings but is also great. The Ambassador is nice as well. Please, in the future, just refer to me as 'Mr. Olds'. :) Good to hear from you, Jon! :)
After further thought, I was incorrect. Two from Reverb.com, one from Ebay and one from a local sale page. :) I don't want to give Ebay more credit than they deserve. :)
Both of my Reverb purchases were from Music stores; my Recording cornet came from a Sam Ash in Phoenix, and my Ambassador trumpet came from an independent music store in Virginia. They were fantastic; super quick ship, great communication. It's like Ebay but a bit more laid back and about half the fee(s) for selling. :) Paypal at both places, so I had Reverb and Paypal if anything went wrong. I'll definite use Reverb again.
I've never been able to get one. There doesn't seem to be a lot of them, frankly. I want one with the nickel-silver tip and the brass bell (remainder, other than the nickel-silver tip), but I've never got one. Never had an Opera , either. Maybe in time. :)
Leo, I'm using either an AKG 420 mic (I bought used for $100), a Yamaha mixer ($400?) and I run this into my Iphone via the headphone cord. ProMovie accepts it all. Here's the vid where I got the idea and instructions. You're quite right, the Iphone itself doesn't do a great job - unless the room is large and rather lively sounding, in my opinion. Frankly, the smallest, cheapest mixer would probably work - all we need is a bit of reverb, to achieve a live sound. This is my opinion, of course. :) Here's the vid that I used to get started... Good luck! :) ruclips.net/video/9K7aXhEgHmY/видео.html

It’s good your wife is so understanding. Look forward to the new cornet review.
