To the movie's credit, this Jim Hawkins is more memorable than other adaptations, including the book. He at least tries to become a better person throughout the adventure and is shown to be very intelligent despite his parental issues.
@@yoboibeerus1387 I give Onward a 9.5/10 or probably a 10/10 for me it gets better when rewatching it a lot but that’s probably because it relates a lot to me.
I don't get the dislike for Jim. The entire point of his character is that he's a moody teenager with no direction in life, and then becomes better through the course of the movie. So, I don't think complaining about said moodiness is a fair complaint when it's the point of the character. (Complaints about how his character arc was handled can be valid, but that wasn't given here.) And Silver's speech to Jim wouldn't hit half as hard if we weren't in Jim's boots at some point in our lives.
He's a teenage boy who was raised without a father, so his moodiness is actually realistic. It feels like people misconstrue Jim as a whiny edge lord, but the film makes it very clear that he doesn't have much self-esteem and takes it out just as much on himself. Jim not having a father also plays a big role in his relationships with Doppler and John Silver.
@@TeamFriendship8600 An angsty character can work in another film, but in Treasure Planet when you have colorful characters like Captain Amelia, Dr Doppler, and John Sliver. Jim feels a bit too different by comparison. Imagine if Cloud from Final Fantasy 7 was the main character in Kingdom hearts, it would feel odd.
@@orangeslash1667 But if he wasn't angsty, his bond with Silver wouldn't work as well. And a neglectful parent can absolutely cause this sort of angst. Besides that, it's not like he's taking it out on others, his behavior is purely self destructive. He starts off with no self worth and plenty of self hatred, and it takes the emotional support of Silver to get him out of that. Teenagers are already moody and hormonal, but when you put that on top of paternal abandonment and a lower class upbringing, I can hardly blame him for being angsty.
@@TeamFriendship8600 Jim in this film is a bit older than the book, if he was younger and more vulnerable the relationship between him and John Silver would have been more charming. The problem is, this is Treasure Planet not Treasure Island. If Jim was younger, he wouldn't make it out alive☠☠. Or Maybe if Treasure Planet was longer, we would see more of Jim's happy side, instead of the the last minute????? Problem is Disney won't allow it because the film is already stupidly expensive💸💸. Treasure Planet feels like a Double edge Sword, the Sci-fi elements makes it Darker and more Action packed than the original, but makes me Question if it benefits the story????????
@@orangeslash1667 Nah, angsty teenage Jim is better than a wide-eyed youth. Things like Silver's speech and the subsequent betrayal wouldn't have hit as hard if we didn't see Silver raise Jim up from such a low point and see Jim at that low point. And Jim's "happy side" isn't last minute, it's a gradual change over the movie. At the point where the character's first arrive on Treasure Planet, Jim isn't an angsty teen any more. We just don't see his "happy side" because of the whole life and death stuff.
You’ve got an off reading on Jim. His daddy issues mean a lack of a father figure and male role model. When he’s done wrong and is caught he gets punished, so when he’s on the RLS Legacy and something he’s thinks he’s done well, and is proud in, has cost Mr Arrow his life, he’s harsh on himself and thinks he’s disappointed Silver (who taught him how to tie knots). When he’s able to put his skills as a quick thinker and a mechanic to use as well as his tasks on the ship he does impress. Sometimes people need to be told they’re doing good, and Silver does this for Jim. Basically Jim sees himself as others do, a reckless teen usually in trouble for something or other (he completes the relevant bit of law he’s broken by subsection) but is able to see himself for his fullest potential when someone invests time and effort looking out for him and he’s receptive. That’s the whole point of the I’m Still Here bit. It’s a good decision by the writers not to introduce a love interest for Jim even though he’s been aged up from his novel counterpart. Not even on Montressor is there a girl who’s weary of his run ins with the law or a bad girl egging him on. It allows the narrative to focus on his relationship with Silver and how this addresses Jim’s need for a father figure who wants to invest time and effort in him.
Also Jim is a very relatable character, especially for teens, whether they be like him or the complete opposite of him (like me). That golden words which Silver gives to Jim is exactly what every teenager would want to hear
Yep. I don't think that if Jim was the classic golden boy of Disney protagonists that did more teaching than learning Treasure Planet would have had nearly as much heart. Muppet Treasure Island is a good telling of the story too, but it is just a fun comedy adventure and that Jim is only remarkable in a couple scenes. MTI is the story of the adventure while TP is Jim's story. Best summed up in one of the closing lines when Jim himself says that when he first got on the ship he'd have gone full pirate in a heartbeat, but has grown to the point where he is ready to be his own man and make something of himself.

Lack of advertisement killed it. And the advertisement it did get was out of touch with what the movie was actually about. Definitely an underrated movie imo
They marketed it as a kids’ comedy and put the Martin Short robot front and centre when they could’ve marketed it as a teens’ sci-fi action-adventure film. Hell, Jim Hawkins was a great edgy emo protagonist when it was what was popular, even if he did end up deconstructing that trend and gave him a reason why he is depressed in one of the saddest Disney moments ever. This is the Disney film that most closely resembles the 2000s dark and edgy/emo trend. I see it as Disney’s equivalent to Shadow the Hedgehog, but in a good way and in a way that also deconstructs this trend.

The late 90's early 2000's sure were filled with movies where a group of characters find a map and jorney to find treasure or equivalent and the themes of trust and camaraderie play out: Road to El Dorado, Titan A.E, Sinbad, Treasure Planet, Atlantis
Treasure planet was a bomb 💣 probably because Anastasia was a popular movie during 1997 and treasure planet came out in the cinema 2002 Not long in between each other.
Alright. You've complained about how badly you think Jim Hawkins was written. I would like to hear how you would write a teenage boy who hasn't gotten the help he needs to process the abandonment of his father due to a nearly constantly working and stressed out mother? How would you write a character with these issues and little to no outlet for his emotions? How would you write this teenager?
I get the impression that that setup is part of the problem in his mind. Sounds like he thought Jim should have been a bright noble shiny there to be an aspirational figure from the start there to teach others like Belle from Beauty and the Beast.
@@travissmith2848 Character development needs a starting point. Is Kuzco a jerk at the start of Emperor’s New Groove? Yes, but that’s because the point of his plight is to learn to be a bit more humble and empathetic which is achieved at the end.

What I find weird about Treasure Planet though is that while it is an underrated film among the masses, it's also kind of an overrated film among the animation community.
Appealing to both kids and adults is never easy, but Disney is no stranger to doing this. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. There were also other factors that contributed to Treasure Planet's financial shortcomings such as it premiering at the same time as Harry Potter 2 and Santa Clause 2. Also it came out around the time when audiences interest in 2D was wanning. But hey, at least it has developed a cult following 18 years since it's release.
Pardon me, but I think you're missing the whole point of Jim in this movie. He was changed into a teenager because John Musker and Ron Clements wanted him to feel relatable to older audiences.
He did for me. Especially the scene where he mentions he thought for once he did something right (he did), had that feeling more than once. Even as an adult.
@@scoutart1508 every reviewer is different, so don’t always expect them to like something that you like. More importantly and depending on the reviewer, be respectful.
That’s his character arc, learning to let go of absence left by his father and prove himself his own man. Silver shows faith in him, teaches him life skills and is general the father figure Jim has been looking for. It takes a character who in the book was at best a plot device and gives him a character arc. Best of all, Jim doesn’t get a whiff of a love interest.
@@yoboibeerus1387 Once he’s on the ship, how does he blame others? He’s not initially happy about being the cabin boy but he does do the dishes and scrubs the deck, taking on Silver’s advice. When Mr Arrow is lost to the black hole he blames himself not realising it was Scroop (which Silver is aware of but doesn’t tell Jim). Even on Montressor he’s acting out against the rules, solar surfing in the industrial area like naughty teens going somewhere they’re told not to go for whatever. He has a pretty friendly relationship with Delbert, never angry at him. At the end Jim does have a changed attitude. He’s looking to his future instead of letting his past keep a hold over him, as shown in how his arrivals at the Benbow contrast each other. Both times he’s flanked by robot police, but whereas the first time they’ve busted him for trespassing the end of the film they’re escorting him as an office, Sarah’s reactions being different too (weary groan and elation respectively).
@VademecumPopkultury I have to agree with you 100%. it really was a great movie, regardless of what happened at the box office. it was adventurous, the animation was captivating, and regardless of the OP's take on Jim I loved his development in the story (completely relatable).
I loved Jim, Amelia, Delbert, Sarah, B.E.N, and Silver. Underrated masterpiece imo. With Jim, yeah he’s a angsty teenager......at first. He changed over time, probably thanks to Silver. It’s noting that when the robo-cops show up at the end, it was probably to show he graduated from the Interstellar Academy instead of dropping him off for breaking the law. That’s his character development. Besides it makes sense to me that he would be angsty when he didn’t at all have a father figure or a positive male role model. That’s something a lot of kids don’t have. And his parent didn’t just unexpectedly die. He straight up left and abandoned Jim and Sarah. I seriously don’t understand the dislike for his character. Plus I like that he doesn’t have a love interest, leaves him open for any pairing and in general it’s refreshing. Means he gets to grow as a character through his relationship with Silver. that father & son relationship is exactly why I hate when they are paired together. I’ll actually say he’s an underrated protagonist. Even my second favorite, the first one being Aladdin. He might even end up sharing that spot with Aladdin.
I really like it too. I really liked Jim and Silver. Both of them grew in their characters. And their character growth is my favorite part of the movie.
Treasure planet was a huge nostalgic favorite of mine. I personally think it's an awesome movie that everyone should see. 9/10, One of my favorite Disney movies.
Jim is one of the best disney protagonists ever, if not. While most of these characters are people with major disadvantages or people that have major political roles, Jim is just a normal guy. Nothing special. The film is about him finding his way and it feels very simple and inspirational. Everybody has that point in their life where they are trying to find their place in the world and seek mentorship and inspiration, thus I think Jim is the most powerful protagonist cause he represents something everybody goes through.
I didn't think Jim was that bad and I often feel like people judge kid characters too harshly. I mean some like Koda from Brother Bear sure are annoying but like say with Jim, I think it's pretty understandable. Kids aren't pitch perfect. I mean I remember myself having bratty moments as a teen. It's not because I was a rotten teen. It means I was a teen. You could say they're even worse than kids because they're going through hormones, they're emotional as heck and if they don't have any strong influence or anything to do, they're gonna be rowdy most likely and can think of the worst things to say because of those reasons. Not all teens are brats but a lot of them have their moments.
Yeah I Really Enjoy this Film But the reason why I was sad about It because Sliver’s Voice actor Pass away Two years ago in 2018 but also It’s relatable

I really can't agree with you about the characters. Besides Ben I liked all the other principal characters. Jim is the angsty teen heartthrob who grows as a person and finds his place in the world, John Silver is a charmer with a surprising and delightful depth to him, Doppler is funny without overstaying his welcome and has a nice character arc (he was also low-key my crush along with Amelia) and Amelia herself is a fucking icon who I could quote endlessly. Ben, even if he's the weakest link, is not actually a bad character. He's just a bit annoying. Does the movie have problems? Absolutely, but I don't think the characters not being memorable or likeable is one of them. Pd. More in depth about Jim, I have to say your impression of him is fair but completely subjective. He's meant to be the angsty rebellious teen. That's why his arc works. He grows, he makes mistakes, he finds his purpose, he finds a place where his talents are appreciated... When he's being angsty it's usually because he feels misunderstood, mistreated or guilty. But he learns to be more assertive, to face his mistakes and his fears head on. This is creatively illustrated in both his colour scheme, which becomes lighter throughout the film, and the shadow covering his eyes, which all but disappears by the end of the movie. He's not the most complex character, but he works, and his relationship with John Silver is delightful to watch. I understand that sometimes characters just strike one as unlikable because of our own personal values or impressions, but I wanted to make a case for Jim, because I do think he's well written, regardless of our feelings about his attitude or character. There are tons of characters I greatly dislike which I have to admit are well written. It's a thing. And some people love them. A lot of people love Jim. As far as I know he was a prime candidate for childhood crush for a lot of young viewers. I honestly really appreciate him.
Yeah....plus, there is actually a sizable fandom especially for Jim. Jim/Ariel is (for some reason) a particularly popular pairing in the Disney fandom. Also, it was pretty ballsy for Disney to give Jim this backstory. I mean, a character whose father didn't die but just left? This was the early 2000s, Divorce was still something which literally didn't feature in animated movies AT ALL. Having the mother struggling with raising Jim, and Jim having all those self-worth issues, that was incredible to see this actually being addressed in an animated movie. Never mind one by Disney.
I grew up with this movie, me and my dad used to watch it whenever we can. And I still remember it and love whenever it’s available. This movie really deserves more than what it happened.
I agree. I really like this movie. I will admit that it is a little rough in places and could have been better at mixing the light hearted parts with the more serious parts. But the character growth of Jim and Silver is the real treasure of the movie.

Animat, I respect your opinion, but I have to disagree with your rating with this film, and give it a 9.5/10. The one flaw that I might have with this film is that they probably could have developed Jim’s father more, and explained why he left in the first place. Other than that, I loved this film from beginning to end. Also, I thought that Jim grew as a character as Treasure Planet progressed. One other thing that I would like to mention is that when comparing Treasure Planet to say Atlantis: The Lost Empire, which oddly enough cake out the year before this film, I felt like this film made some better choices, like having better world building, better developed characters, better developed relationships, as well as a better developed story overall. Yes, Atlantis did a fairly good job with those things, and I would give that one a 9/10. However, I felt like Treasure Planet improves in nearly every area that Atlantis could have, and should have developed in. Well, at least you were fairly positive towards Treasure Planet, and thank you for finally reviewing this one!
Well, you really do have a problem with teenagers with parents issues, don't you? I guess in my case, since I know what it's like to have issues with one parent, it makes me easier to related to them. I get why you don't like Jim, but I found him realistic (Don't forget he is actually a teenager. Of course, he is going to exagerated) and very relateble.
Saying Jim Hawkins is the worst character among the bad ones is going to anger a lot of girls who crushed on him. That being said, They changed it up and tried to be more modern with the kid. Jim was a troubled kid. Often the best thing for them was to send them on an adventure, mostly the military, or on a sea (space) voyage. It taught them valuable life lessons and they often came back stronger, better men because of it. This happened with Jim and he found a father figure who helped fill the gaps and taught him life lessons he needed to learn.
The issue I have with Treasure Planet is how dull the setting is with it being in space. It is still a good underrated movie that definitely did NOT deserve to bomb.
I never watched this movie until a few years in 2017, when I decided to watch all Disney animated movies in order, from Snow White to Moana, the latest film by them at the time. I liked Treasure Planet fine a 7 or 8 out of ten for me.
Fun facts: -Sergio Pablos, who would be the director of the acclaimed animated film, Klaus, was the animator of Dr. Doppler. He previously animated Tantor, the elephant from Tarzan. -Treasure Planet was the first animated movie featuring Emma Thompson as Captain Amelia. Nine years later, she lent her voice to queen Elinor in Pixar's Brave. -Treasure Planet was the third animated Disney movie released in IMAX theaters, the first one being Fantasia 2000 and the second one the extended version of Beauty and the Beast. -One probable theory why this movie turned out to be a financial disaster was because Disney didn't put enough faith on the project as there was a significant small marketing campaign, as well as the company chose the wrong date to release it in theaters. During the time Treasure Planet came out, there was a tough competition with movies such as Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Gangs of New York and Lord of the Rings. The Two Towers. -Aside of Treasure Planet, other animated movies released in that same year that also became box-office bombs are The Powerpuff Girls Movie and Hey, Arnold! The Movie.
Great review of Treasure Planet. This movie was a classic from the 2000’s and this is where Disney use to be good from the 90’s, even in the 2000’s and it’s way better than Modern Disney now. This and Atlantis The Lost Empire are tie to tie as the most underrated Disney animated movies ever in the 2000’s in my opinion.
I thought this movie was incredible! The visuals, characters, and the fact that it's Treasure Island in space as Steampunk are awesome! And I'll be honest, at the time this movie came out I was just a teen and I actually loved Jim's character. He reminds me of myself as a teenager: a was a bit of an outcast, and had issues with authority and was super angsty and edgy. (You do mellow out with age, I'm nothing like that now lol ^_^0) I'd love to use this as one of my favorite inspiration movies when I start animation school. I was fascinated with the Special Features part of the DVD and just looked with geeky delight at the concept art section!
My thoughts are pretty on par with Mat’s. Treasure Planet is a favorite for many, but for me, I think it’s just an enjoyable ride and an interesting experiment. (Of course, I do come out of it feeling good.) Mat’s score for this one match up with ‘Onward’ (as do his thoughts, it seems at times), and strangely enough, I seem to have a similar relationship with Jim Hawkins as I do with Barley. When I first watch the movie, they’re kind of hard to put up with. But as each movie would go on, they are portrayed more and more in a dignified light that makes them grow on me and root for them along their journey.
the robot was initially the reason why I didn't see the film as a kid (I saw a few trailers but his voice just turns me off for some reason), a couple of years ago I saw this film for the very first time and loved it.
I don't find Jim to be detrimental at all to the film, I just felt more of the manipulative marketing towards the teen audience with him. And yes, I do find this to be an underrated gold mine to see. At credits: Can't wait to see you review Bone Daddy!
I just watched Treasure Planet for the first time a couple weeks ago on Disney+ and it was pretty good. True that Jim Hawkins is not a good main lead but I will give him this. At least he’s a better main lead than the other main lead in an animated film that opened against Treasure Planet on November 27th Also “The Nightmare Before Christmas” is next
I have to disagree...Jim Hawkins is a great lead, even more so when you consider that the characters in the original book are all pretty flat with the notable exception of Long John Silver. This adaptation manages to make all of them interesting...granted, their version of Ben Gunn is just as annoying as it is in the book, but otherwise all of their characters are through and through likable, especially Captain Amalia and Jim Hawkins. I just "get" Jim, and I love his backstory. Yeah, I get that Americans have developed a visciral dislike for the "skateboard guy", but that is kind of unfair, since in this case, the character is way more than that, and the "scateboard" more a sign of his advanterous spirit and his ability to design something like this than just to show that he is "cool".
In my opinion: Story 9/10 (Its engaging, emotional and heart touching. The humor is hit and miss Animation: 9/10(The CGI is dated but still is has great animation and designs) Characters: 8/10(Jim, Silver,Amelia, Scroop, Arrow are great characters. Sure Delbert,Ben and other characters are kind of annoying but the good characters are great)
Personally, I tolerated Jim Hawkins as a character, but he's never been among my favorite Disney heroes. His growing relationship with John Silver certainly helped with this case. Beyond that, Silver, Captain Amelia and Dr. Doppler were easily the best characters in the movie, from their enjoyable personalities to their intriguing designs and animation. Speaking of which, I'm kind of mixed about the alien designs in this film. Some of them provide a great combination of human and animal traits to look like brand new creatures, or have cool animalistic appearances like some of the pirates. But some of the others don't pack the same punch, like some of the customers at Mrs. Hawkins' restaurant. It's not bad, but I feel some of these designs could've used a little tweaking to stand out more. Next time it is Halloween, and there will be white things in the air.
I personally find this as an underrated film.

OVERRATED AF!!!!!!!!!
I strongly disagree with you about Jim, but I respect your opinion.
I highly disagree with your opinion of Jim. His journey to overcome his self-loathing is part of what makes this movie great, imo.

That's not interesting

I didn't think Jim was that bad and I often feel like people judge kid characters too harshly. I mean some like Koda from Brother Bear sure are annoying but like say with Jim, I think it's pretty understandable. Kids aren't pitch perfect. I mean I remember myself having bratty moments as a teen. It's not because I was a rotten teen. It means I was a teen. You could say they're even worse than kids because they're going through hormones, they're emotional as heck and if they don't have any strong influence or anything to do, they're gonna be rowdy most likely and can think of the worst things to say because of those reasons. Seriously dude I mean I’m very glad that you love Brother Bear but why can’t you just respect everyone else’s opinions?

Speaking of which Animat. Since Glen Keane worked on this did you know he worked on Over The Moon on Netflix? I'd like to see a review of that!
What is Animat's favorite disney movie from the Disney Renaissance?
It's Beauty and the Beast. I should know because I've seen his top 10 favorite Disney films.
10:49 well fourth wall, it was nice knowing you.
Animat did the math wrong . He’s four points off it’s 11/10 .
I never watched this movie until a few years in 2017, when I decided to watch all Disney animated movies in order, from Snow White to Moana, the latest film by them at the time. I liked Treasure Planet fine a 7 or 8 out of ten for me.
I’m glad I was one of the few that saw it in theaters at age 4.
Fun facts:
-Sergio Pablos, who would be the director of the acclaimed animated film, Klaus, was the animator of Dr.
The Movie.
Oh you did not just insult Jim
Great review of Treasure Planet.
This movie was a classic from the 2000’s and this is where Disney use to be good from the 90’s, even in the 2000’s and it’s way better than Modern Disney now.
This and Atlantis The Lost Empire are tie to tie as the most underrated Disney animated movies ever in the 2000’s in my opinion.
Now the only John musker and Ron Clements Animated Disney film he has yet to complete to review is "The Little Mermaid".
Yeah. Not only that, but it kickstarted this awesome era in animation called The Disney Renesance. But, it's also come under fire nowadays.
I love The Little Mermaid! It’s one of my favorite Disney movies.
@@westerfrost3701 same here
@@samuelquan3826 Me, too.
To this day, Treasure Planet still remains the movie that I watched the most times in theater.
Sergio Pablos was responsible of some character design . He directed Klaus and the designs are similar
After years of waiting, it's finally here.
Yes!! I’ve been waiting for this review
BREADSWORD already did a great review of this film. Disney worked against this film.
(You do mellow out with age, I'm nothing like that now lol ^_^0)
I'd love to use this as one of my favorite inspiration movies when I start animation school. I was fascinated with the Special Features part of the DVD and just looked with geeky delight at the concept art section!
My thoughts are pretty on par with Mat’s. Treasure Planet is a favorite for many, but for me, I think it’s just an enjoyable ride and an interesting experiment. (Of course, I do come out of it feeling good.)
Mat’s score for this one match up with ‘Onward’ (as do his thoughts, it seems at times), and strangely enough, I seem to have a similar relationship with Jim Hawkins as I do with Barley. When I first watch the movie, they’re kind of hard to put up with. But as each movie would go on, they are portrayed more and more in a dignified light that makes them grow on me and root for them along their journey.
What’s this? What’s this?
December 4th,
What’s this?
Nightmare before Christmas is next.
the robot was initially the reason why I didn't see the film as a kid (I saw a few trailers but his voice just turns me off for some reason), a couple of years ago I saw this film for the very first time and loved it.
He shouts constantly, just count yourself lucky you didn't have to travel with him like I did
I don't agree with your opinion on Jim, but I do respect it
Same here.
JIM HAWKINS IS A TERRIBLE PROTAGONIST! I AGREE WITH ANIMAT!
@@Godzilla-jr5gi that's your opinion
I don't find Jim to be detrimental at all to the film, I just felt more of the manipulative marketing towards the teen audience with him.
And yes, I do find this to be an underrated gold mine to see.
At credits: Can't wait to see you review Bone Daddy!
I just watched Treasure Planet for the first time a couple weeks ago on Disney+ and it was pretty good. True that Jim Hawkins is not a good main lead but I will give him this. At least he’s a better main lead than the other main lead in an animated film that opened against Treasure Planet on November 27th
Also “The Nightmare Before Christmas” is next
*Looks up the other animated film*
Oh dear...
In my opinion:
Story 9/10 (Its engaging, emotional and heart touching. The humor is hit and miss
Animation: 9/10(The CGI is dated but still is has great animation and designs)
Characters: 8/10(Jim, Silver,Amelia, Scroop, Arrow are great characters. Sure Delbert,Ben and other characters are kind of annoying but the good characters are great)
i like delbert
bloody_outlaw I forgot to say that he has a good development. He stopped to screw up and he contributed a lot in the ending
I thought it was ok. 🤷
Classic review idea: The Incredibles
Finally! "Showtime"!😂💯
Thats probably next time for January
@@friepaign3828 The Incredibles is an amazing movie! It’s easily in my Top 20 Best Animated Movies
@@fnafboyahoy512 I think AniMat will give it a 9/10
@@friepaign3828 Are you kidding?!? He will obviously give it a 10/10!!!
A 7 out of 10? Yeah, that's fine. The Nightmare Before Christmas is next! Way to end the year off with a bang.
Yeah I can’t wait
