A great thing about "The Emperor's New Groove" is that the humor is timeless. Every single joke still sticks the landing even after 20 years. It doesn't rely heavily on humor that might be dated, as far to my knowledge. It's why this still stands the test of time.
@@katietaylor8314 i saw it as a massive hommage to 50's cartoons, even the ones not made by Disney, without doing a full gallery of cameos like Roger Rabbit but by just getting the essence of the humor these cartoons had right
So true. Today the humor in animated films is all fart jokes, slapstick and pop-cultural references. This, however, works so well because it's a character-driven buddy comedy where the humor derives mostly from the characters and their interaction with each other and from the finely-crafted situation comedy.

I think one big thing that helped is that the movie opens with showing Kuzco sitting in the rain as a llama suffering the aftermath of his selfishness (accompanied with the narration), and setting up that this is what will happen to him if he doesn't improve his ways, and showing how he will improve over the course of the movie BEFORE returning to that scene by the middle of the movie (where he breaks the 4th wall by saying, "Who are you kidding, pal?! They saw the whole thing, they KNOW what happened!", when you would typically not expect such a 4th wall break to work for such a scene)! Alos, Yzma mentioned in her tirade scene after Kuzco casually fires her "I practically raised him!", and Kronk remarks, "Yeah, you'd think he'd have turned out better."
Here's my parody of that hilarious scene Yzma: "Pull the lever, Kronk!" Kronk pulls the lever, but nothing happens. He pulls the level 3 or 4 times, but nothing still happens. Yzma: "Why are you pulling the lever over and over again?" Kronk: "It's just that I thought when I pulled the lever, the floor would drop out from under you. You'd scream "Wrong Lever!" Fall in a moat, come out with a crocodile biting your butt and you'd say in annoyance "Why do we even have *that* lever?". Then smack the crocodile to make it go away." Yzma (stares in confusion at Kronk): "Okaaayyyyyyyyyy." Kronk: "I guess I'll have to pull the right lever then." Kronk pulls the other lever and the floor drops under Yzma and she screams and falls into the moat. Kronk: "Oh! There it is." Yzma then comes out with a crocodile biting her butt and an annoyed look on her face.

The Emperor’s New Groove along with Lilo and Stitch are in my opinion the Two Best Films that Walt Disney Animation Studios have ever made and this was a great Review of The Emperor’s New Groove and I would love to see Animat do a Review of Lilo and Stitch since he did this Film
Lilo and Stitch really nails the human story, and the B-plot with Nani and social services as represented by Cobra Bubbles resonates more emotionally than the A-plot with the aliens. It’s the first animated Disney film to explore what it means to lose a parent, a very common trope in Disney films, and have that be a driving force. Lilo only adopts Stitch because Nani is overcompensating as a parent figure after losing both their parents, something the eight year old Lilo doesn’t realise. It’s also an angle for older viewers, something that holds more meaning when you understand Nani’s dilemma better. Among the human cast there are no bad guys, but Cobra’s mission is at odds with Nani wanting her and Lilo to remain together and we can understand why he’s valid in doing what he does. Gantu is there as a final boss to have a conventional bad guy, and he’s defeated as easily as he is in Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep as the boss for Aqua’s Deep Space storyline (seriously, Critical Mode is the only place he’s anywhere near a decent challenge).
"No it can't be, How did you get back here before us?" "Uhh... How did we Kronk?" "Well ya got me, By all accounts it doesn't make sense!" Another favourite moment of mine in the film.

The only real complaint I have for this movie is having to take out Eartha Kitt's song. I understand with the major story changes the song wouldn't flow right, but at the same time; it's a freakin Eartha Kitt song!
@@chillplayer1234 Back when it was Kingdom of the Sun, Yzma had a song Snuff out the Light. Yzma was played by Eartha Kitt, a crazy talented singer. And again, I LOVE what the movie became, but it almost feels like a waste to not think of a new song for her somewhere.
@@inufan330 I'm surprised that Eartha Kitt can sing because most Celebrity's are usually bad at singing, compared to actual singers. For Example the reason why Hades from Hercules doesn't have a song is because James Woods admits he sucks at singing.
Definitely one of the funniest animated movies ever made along with, Shrek 1&2, Toy Story films, Inside Out, Monsters Inc, The Road to El Dorado, The LEGO Movie, Aladdin, Spider-Man Into the Spider-Verse, and Wreck it Ralph
One of my favorite comedies ever made. Feels like I’m watching Disney’s take on the looney tunes as a movie. One of my favorite moments is the river scene and the scenes with kronk and yzma. And kuzco is a great example of the loveable jerk. He’s someone like Rick from Rick and morty instead of someone like Bloo from Fosters home from imaginary friends.
What really helps the comedy is the lack of pop culture references to date it to the early 2000’s. The comedy is timeless and it’s just as good in 2021 as it was in 2016, 2011, 2006 and when the film was released. It’s absurdism up to eleven, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.
Not to brag but I personally find the movie is EVEN MORE hilarious in French, the tones and word pacing are amazing and voices sometimrs more energetic like Kuzco's and the extra added jokes not forced at all (like when he presents Kuzcotopia "Gift from myself for myself ! Oh how can I thank myself ?"). I recommend giving a try !
The German dub was also very funny. Kuzco was voiced by Michael Bully Herbig, the maker of Schuh des Manitu and Traumschiff Surprise, and as always, he was really great.
I loved watching this with my family on Disney+. This movie hit all the right notes in the comedy department, and everyone played their parts perfectly. David Spade, John Goodman, Eartha Kitt (RIP) and Patrick Warburton. I am glad this film got the Seal of Approval!
@Mystra Copeland I guess so. Plus, its been awhile since I seen it. I know some folks might have problems with it, but its another Guilty Pleasure of mine.
When I first saw the movie I thought he said ‘cheese me no like keys’ so that when Kronk said ‘cheese out’ I thought Kuzco wanted cheese outside the potatoes 🤣
The Emperor's New Groove laid the ground work for movies like Tangled, Wreck It Ralph and Frozen to mix humor into their films. This movie is important to Disney's history and should be treated as one of the Disney greats.
I'm in part sad because the original concept "Kingdom of the Sun" was an amazing idea on my opinion, but at the same time I'm happy because the final product is one of my favorite movies.
I also love this movie, but at the same time I still feel sorry for Roger Allers, since this originally began as his passion project. At least some of the concepts made it to the final version.
My sentiments exactly. I do like the Prince and the Pauper film (with Mickey and Co.) But, I wouldn’t have minded to see another take on that story with “Kingdom of the Sun.” But, I digress. The Emperor’s New Groove is still awesome.
I miss this sort of angular style Disney did in the 2000's. Compare the stylied designs of Emperor's New Groove and Home on the Range to the more realistic ones in Treasure Planet and Brother Bear, with Atlantis being right on the middle of all of them.
The funniest Disney movie comes from an era when Disney had bad movies like Chicken Little, Home on the Range , live action movies and Disney animated srquels 😯😮
The title says it for itself it really is the funniest movie Disney has ever made I also have a hard time comparing to Aladdin. Like both are really the best comedies ever made by Disney. I say groove really takes the cake with at least their actors and humor. Compare all of them of funny with the exception of Jafar. Although compared to every comedy it's hard to really get the chance to be as funny as those movies
It is certainly the best parody of Disney tropes ever made. Forget Enchanted, forget Shrek, they just parody what some people think Disney movies are like on a very surface level. ENG on the other hand parodies tropes which actually are very common in Disney movies.
@@swanpride As much as I like Shrek 1 and 2 and The Simpsons, even I'd argue that Disney is actually better at parodying themselves than other studios are of parodying them, even nowadays where their more recent films are at least a tad cynical towards many of their old cliches. Heck, one of the things I love about Frozen is how it mocks old Disney cliches without it feeling like an actual mockery (or at least a typical Shrek style mockery), like it's still a movie that wants to be more serious and genuine.
@@disneyfan8719 I actually disliked the kind of mockery Frozen does, mostly because it has zero roots in reality. I wish Disney would stop listen to those, who just want to criticise without having any appreciation for their work.
@@swanpride Because Frozen is about feeling sorry for Elsa for her lack of control of her powers, the humor feels out of place. ENG however who exactly what it wants to be.
Kuzco is awesome, even before his redemption. He's one of those likeable jerks we see in movies. He's an asshole at the beginning, but is fun to watch simultaneously. His redemption also worked too, from beginning to end. His talk with Pacha at the end perfectly sums up his development while still being in character. David Spade's delivery certainly helped a great deal.

Same here man, this alongside lilo and stitch are my favorite Disney movies released in the 2000s!
*When Animat finally reviews your favorite Disney movie* Oh yeah.....It's all coming together ;)
"No it can't be, How did you get back here before us?"
"Uhh... How did we Kronk?"
"Well ya got me, By all accounts it doesn't make sense!"
Another favourite moment of mine in the film.
Same!😂

There will never be an animated comedy film like this, this is hard to top by Disney.
"Now here's a rare case of a movie that went from being a forgotten piece of media that came and went in theaters to one of animation's biggest cult favorites!"
Titan A.E., Osmosis Jones, and Brother Bear: Are we a joke to you?
I love this movie! The wrong lever scene is the best
This is my older Sisters favourite Disney movie
She can quote it for days
Cool fact: Tom Jones is the theme song guy.
so many iconic from this movie:
"Pull the lever, Cronk!"
*WRONG LEVEEEEEEEEER!*
"Oops"
"Why do we even have that lever?!"
"Uh-oh!"
"Don't tell me. We're about to go over a huge waterfall"
"Yep"
"Sharp rocks at the bottom?"
"Most likely"
"Bring it on"
*BOOOO YEHAHAHAHAHA! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!*
"No. It can't be! How did you get here before us?"
"Uhh.... How did we, Cronk?"
"Well, ya got me. By all accounts, it doesn't make any sense"
"Oh well. Back to business"
this movie never gets old!
The only real complaint I have for this movie is having to take out Eartha Kitt's song. I understand with the major story changes the song wouldn't flow right, but at the same time; it's a freakin Eartha Kitt song!
What do you mean?
Hands down my favorite Disney movie, without a doubt
NOT Only is The Emperor's New Groove is the Underrated Disney animated But the Funniest Disney animated movie ever made
Not to brag but I personally find the movie is EVEN MORE hilarious in French, the tones and word pacing are amazing and voices sometimrs more energetic like Kuzco's and the extra added jokes not forced at all (like when he presents Kuzcotopia "Gift from myself for myself !
I love this movie. It makes me laugh every single time I watch it. Also, as a side note, it takes place in an Andean setting, not a Mesoamerican.
This is one of my favorite Disney movies.
Also, Gumby: The Movie is next.
Peepee poopoo
I hope Gumby the movie doesn’t get the animat seal of garbage
It did
This film is a classic, I still own it on VHS & DVD.
I still have Kronk's New Groove.
@Mystra Copeland Same
@Mystra Copeland I guess so.
Plus, its been awhile since I seen it.
I know some folks might have problems with it, but its another Guilty Pleasure of mine.
"Cheese me no likeee" my fav line😂!
*”HA, BOOM BABY!”*
“Ha! Boom, baby!”

Pacha: "Yep."
Kuzco: "Bring it on."

Pacha: "It's okay!"
Kuzco: "Don't do that again."
I'm in part sad because the original concept "Kingdom of the Sun" was an amazing idea on my opinion, but at the same time I'm happy because the final product is one of my favorite movies.
I feel torn too!😭😂
me too
I also love this movie, but at the same time I still feel sorry for Roger Allers, since this originally began as his passion project. At least some of the concepts made it to the final version.
@@brianlevine871 true
My sentiments exactly. I do like the Prince and the Pauper film (with Mickey and Co.) But, I wouldn’t have minded to see another take on that story with “Kingdom of the Sun.” But, I digress. The Emperor’s New Groove is still awesome.
I CAN'T BELIEVE IT TOOK YOU SO LONG TO REVIEW THIS MOVIE! THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST DISNEY MOVIES EVER!

WRONG LLEEVVEERRRR!!!!!
Why do we even have that lever?!
I still love that scene funniest part of the movie
There was a point in my life where I literally had this whole movie memorized, line by line.
Holy Toledo. It's Gumby's turn to get his movie reviewed.
Yay...... 😒
@matt fahringer oh I see that 😦😦
Ave Garcia what is happening here
But I'll wait for him to do another review ☺️☺️💕💗💖💗💕
I miss this sort of angular style Disney did in the 2000's. Compare the stylied designs of Emperor's New Groove and Home on the Range to the more realistic ones in Treasure Planet and Brother Bear, with Atlantis being right on the middle of all of them.
Sleeping Beauty and Hercules have a similar style, too
1:21 He should’ve said
“Or did Disney end up pulling the wrong lever?”
"The next review shall be."
(hears Gumby music) *YES FINALLY!*
hip hip hooray........😓😓
The funniest Disney movie comes from an era when Disney had bad movies like Chicken Little, Home on the Range , live action movies and Disney animated srquels 😯😮
I really love this movie, My #1 Favorite Disney animated feature of the 2000's
One of my top favorites from Disney, I didn't stop laughing watching the scenes during the review.
This movie deserves the animat seal of approval and since Gumby the movie is next, I hope he doesn’t give it the animat seal of garbage.
Depends on what cut of the movie he views. There’s the theatrical cut and then a director’s cut that shortens the film.
Anyone else pick up the suicide joke when the guards jumped down the drain?
“Nobody lives forever!”
ENG however who exactly what it wants to be.
this is such an underrated gem and definitely the Funniest animated Disney movie ever made
Gumby: The Movie is next!
Yay 😓😓
Excellent Review Mat!
Look forward to more.
I agree. This is one of my fav Disney movies of all time.
This movie is awesome! Way better than Home on The Range!
Don't remind me of that movie... I finally got the songs out of head
❤💖 I truly loved and adored the Emperor's New Groove as a Disney classic animated film and I enjoyed it and loved it in my childhood ♥ and had good laughs with this one and this is the best Disney comedy film since Aladdin and one of the best Disney animated comedy films and best animated comedy films done right! 😃😀😄😁😊 👍🏻 💖❤
👏....👏..............👏
Now I would love to see a review of Tarzan, since it's one of my favorite Disney movies
Still my favourite movie of all time. Love everything to do with this movie.
The comedy delivery, music, animation plus story is just something I haven't experienced in any other movie plus, every actor who portrayed the characters such as David Spade as Kuzco,John Goodman as Pacha,The late great Eartha Kitt as Yzma and Patrick Warburton as the hilarious Kronk. I still qoute this movie even years later. 😇👍

My Rating:

Animation: 9/10

Final Score: 9.5/10
I gotta watch the movie, like I know that it has a big cult status.
Gumby: The Movie is next, all I will say is that the movie will be an interesting experience, but it received mixed reviews and became a box-office bomb. As for the Gumby series itself, it was very weird during the 1950s, but then became better as time progresses.
Then again, in the modern world, Gumby is now forgotten.
Not for ms. I even use the theme song for my Yoshi playlist
This movie is proof that kids movies don't have to be rushed or just a way for parents to distract their kids for an hour
13:12 Me when watch Avengers Infinity War & Endgame many times😆
This is one of the best films made by Disney
David Spade as a Llama. Somehow it worked!
WRONG LLEEVVEERR!!
It's an excellent Disney movie of the 2000's. 😀👍
AniMat, you are still my hero!
I love Emporers new groove. It was one of the first movies I remember seeing in theaters (Toy Story 2 and Tarzan were the first ones I remember seeing.) But because of that it's a favorite for my Mom, sister's and me. We quote this movie ALL the time!
Random quotes many might not remember off the top of their head that I can (Or try to):
Pacha: "Where are you going?"
Kusco: "Excuse me, I'm just going to have a word with the chef"
Pacha: "You're gonna get us thrown out."
Kusco: "Trust me. With this disguise, I'm invisible"
Random guy: "Heh heh."
Ysma: "Ahahaha! I win."
SMACK
Kronk: "What are the odds of that trap door leading me out here?"
Guard: "For the last time, we did not order a giant trampoline!"
Trampoline salesman: "Ya know, pal, you coulda told me that before I set it up."
Kusco: "BOOM BAM BABY!! Let's get in the grub! I am one hungry king of the world! So... no hard feelings?"
Ysma: "Uhh... none whatsoever."
Ysma: "And you know something else? I never liked your spinach puffs. NEVER!"
*sad krona noises*
Devil Kronk: "That's it. She's going down."
Angel Kronk: "Now, now. Remember guys. From above, the wicked shall recieve their just reward."
*all stare at chandelier*
All: "That'll work."
*cuts chandelier wire*
*Ysma survives*
Kronk: "Huh. That usually works."
Ysma: "And so does this!"
Kronk: "Ah. Should have seen that coming. WUUUUUHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!"
Kusco: "Was one of them scary beyond all reason?"
Pacha: "Oh, yeah."
Kusco: "That's Ysma and Kronk! I'm saved!"
Ysma: "That's it, Kronk! Break the door down!"
Kronk: "Break it down? This thing is hand carved mahogany. You can't ruin this type of craftsmanship."
Kusco: "We're getting nowhere with you picking the vile. I'm picking the next one!"
Pacha: "Fine by me!"
Kusco: "Give me that one!"
*poof*
Kusco: "Don't you say a word."
Later...
Kusco: "Yay! I'm a llama again!--Wait."
Comment any other underrated qoutes you think I missed.
I feel that for Kingdom of the Sun to have worked, it needed the team from Aladdin.
Gumby: The Movie is the next review.
OH!
I have not seen that film in ages.
How disappointing 🤦🤦
This is definitely the funniest movie in Disney's animation lineup along with Aladdin.
