Just from the song "Snuff Out The Light", I can tell that Kingdom of the Sun probably would have been a fantastic movie, and I would love to see what would have happened to have they not changed direction and tone. But I would never trade The Emperor's New Groove for that movie because The Emperor's New Groove is great. It's literally an unsung classic that's overlooked by many.
They just should have kept Yzma’s song “Snuff Out the Light” and the subplot of her not only taking over the Kingdom but extinguishing the sun as well.

Fun fact: Eartha Kitt is the original "Santa Baby" singer and she was CRIMINALLY underrated. She's a huge role model to me aside Audrey Hepburn 🥰 She honestly made The Emperor's New Groove

I believe Kingdom Of The Sun deserves a second chance. While I'll always have a soft spot for Emperor's New Groove, the Peruvian theme was handled much better in the original story and I like, in traditional Disney fashion, they were going to take a classic story and make it their own. While I know for a fact they'll never release the 20% completed footage I think Disney is sitting on a possible culturally interesting story that could possibly be in the same league as Coco or Black Panther. All they need is to work in more authentic Peruvian culture and themes into the story, change a few things in the story itself so it's easier to grasp for a wide audience and it could possibly work as a stage musical. Although some people have said that it should be the Disney Live Action Remake for Emperor's New Groove, however, I think that could backfire if people don't know the history. I do see their point of view though since that original story would fit better in Live Action than Emperor's New Groove would.
This was the original Zootopia situation. A well loved movie that's initial version was so different and yet so compelling that people are torn over which they prefer.
Honestly I think I can understand why The Kingdom Of The Sun was scrapped, it did sound like the plot was too complicated with too many elements. Though I still agree that "Snuff out the light" is an absolute banger. I love both the movie that did come out and the original concept, and it's just so sad that we can't have both!
When you look at 'Snuff out the Light' you can probably see why Disney changed the plot. Especially when you apply Incan society and religion to it. 'Snuff out the light' is a really; really dark song. - First thing you need to know to understand the song. Incan religion was polytheistic [many gods] but there was a 'Supreme God' above all others. You could worship whichever spirits and gods you wanted, as long as you worshipped Inti above all others. For example; temples had to have their biggest idol be that of Inti. They could have whatever other gods they wanted in there, but no idol should be larger than Inti. Who is Inti? *The Sun God* . And yes; this means the Incan religion was literally 'Praise the Sun'. - So; 'Snuff out the light' quickly turns into 'Kill God'. Also; Yzma blameing the sun for her ageing? Not so much. She's blameing God. - Then you have the line 'Supay Baby turn me on'. Aside from that being a line that... yeah. Supay. He's the Incan god of the Underworld and Death! Incan Hades! He's also the god of daemons. So actually; upgrade him to Chernabog basically. Also; the rest of that verse basically says Supay has made a deal with Yzma to give her immortality and eternal youth in exchange for 'snuffing out the light'. Also; with the supreme god being a god of light; well... a god of darkness and the underworld is basically satan. - Also there's things like Yzma calling for 'Neophytes' which is a very culty term, calling for literal demons and devils... yeah.
I can see it making people who are WAY too sensitive to stories involving spiritual themes uncomfortable. Hunchback tackled SUPER dark and mature themes in a way kids could understand. Why not this one?
In Princess and the Frog the villain could actually summon demons in it and despite them being portrayed as bad, a bunch of Evangelical soccer moms thought the movie should be rated R because of this. Of course the majority of people outside that vocal minority realized there was nothing wrong with the movie. That said, I'm not aware if this old religion is still active in Peru, if it is, I could see Peruvians having a problem with it, if hardly any believe in it anymore and just treat it as mythology it would be fine though. As for the rest of the world, since it's a religion that's not really prevalent anywhere else, it would just come off as mythology to them and a lot probably wouldn't properly understand the gods either so in the end, it would have been fine everywhere else and totally fine if it's a mostly dead religion in Peru.

You're just overanalyzing a scraped song with too much focus on religion "Be Prepared" is a song about murdering a father and his son and taking over an empire (and let's not forget the little soldier march sequence on it) "Hellfire" is... You can figure that one by yourself lol (Frollo literally saying God's is to blame for man being weak to temptation) And years later, "Friends from the Other Side" is all about making deals with Loas, spirits from voodoo practices If what you said is true, then how is these other songs even approved ? I grew up with emperors new groove and loved it but now I really would like to see what kingdom of the sun would have been and will it ever come back. Who knows?
This would be so cool to explore if they did a live action remake of New Groove, but simply went with the Kingdom of the Sun version. Same if they did a stage version.
I hope a modified version of Kingdom of the Sun is eventually revived as a prequel to The Emperor's New Groove. Manco could be renamed something other than Kuzco and could be Kuzco's great-grandfather and High Priestess Izma could be renamed something like Oozma/Uzma and be Izma's great aunt or some other more distant relative. Of course, certain other things would have to be changed so Kingdom of the Sun wouldn't be too much like The Emperor's New Groove. Perhaps Manco could start out as a llama, but then turn into other llama-like animals like an alpaca or maybe have the potion wear off after a few scenes. Also, Manco's personality would have to be distinct from Kuzco's. He could still be a bit of a self-absorbed brat, but perhaps that could be a front to cover insecurity.
@@ww.DuzaFizz Only thing is in the Emperor's New School Izma's mother appears and her name is Azma. That isn't necessarily a deal ender, but I would think it would take a few generations before Izma's family could get back into a position of power because Oozma would be doing openly evil things (trying to permanently blot out the Sun) and that's not something that would be quickly forgotten or forgiven. This would also give more background and subtext to why Azma and Izma were so power-hungry if it happened further back in the past like 100-150 years before The Emperor's New Groove.

while i do like the idea of the kingdom of the sun, the emperors new groove is by far my most favourite disney movie so i´m glad that this is the version that we got.

I need Disney to retool this idea for their Revival era. It's so epic! Plus, I think it'd be the first movie since the original ENG to have a male protagonist and female antagonist (not counting Zootopia since I consider Judy more of the protagonist than Nick).
I remember being six years old sitting in the cinema and watching this film. This was the first film I, along with my family, watched when we came to the United States. Since reading the Vulture article about Kingdom of the Sun and the documentary Sweatbox, I have thought what if in front of me that day at the cinema was a completely different film? One that was slated to become the Peruvian Lion King? I would have seen my culture represented as a young, Peruvian immigrant and this film (Kingdom) would have undoubtedly become my favorite Disney film. That, to me, is invaluable. While I love Emperor, there's just no comparing the caliber of the film it could have been. Why did they scrap it if it could have been BOTH a comedy and romance with the Prince and the Pauper plot still in tact? You had the classic Disney villain trope and honestly I would have loved to see the alternate sidekick because he's also a symbol of Incan culture. I love Allers because he fell in love with Peruvian culture and actually traveled all the way there. It is my belief that Disney should focus not only on something that's marketable, but to tell a story of culture while entertaining and audience. As Allers said, why not have both? I appreciate Allers and Sting, and hearing "My Funny Friend and Me" has a whole different and bittersweet meaning to me.
Personally, I think with Disney’s current direction of live action remakes of their classics they should include the kingdom of the sun. I think they should give it another try so we can have both movies in this universe!
After watching The Sweatbox, I feel really bad for Sting. He seemed so excited to get to work on a Disney film and his role got majorly reduced. I do agree that, just based on the creators describing the plot, there was TOO much going on. Plus, we got Kronk, so net win overall.
The movie got stuck in the development vault for a long time. First it was set for a late 1997 release. But then it was delayed to spring 1998. Then to 1999, then to 2000, and finally to 2001 before being reworked into The Emperor’s New Groove.
I watched the Sweatbox last night and it was a fascinating film. As an artist and animation fan it was tough watching Roger Allen, Sting, and the rest of the crew screwed over by Thomas Schumacker and Peter Schneider, the execs, after developing this film for 3 years. Personally, I think that the executives were mildly annoying as they came off as more business-focused rather than taking into the craft behind the movie. But they didn't look as harsh as everyone said, just different in thought and mildly annoying, mostly when examining Schumacker. Schneider seemed to be the "good cop" who delivered his opinions in a more respectful tone. A lot of what they said and what the animation crew said provided good lessons for artists who are planning to work in any industry from Graphic Design to Animation. I think seeing how the movie concept evolved from the way it started to the movie we all love today is amazing. I only think if they wanted to show a bit of the Incan culture like they originally planned for Kingdom of The Sun, they could have by incorporating a little bit more of the cultural norms in some small scenes throughout the movie without taking away from The Emperor's New Groove. It would have been more respectful to Allen and the people of Peru, especially since he and the others already spent so much time researching the Peruvian culture. Oh well.
My mom and I love this movie. It's just too funny. It has great actors, music and adult humor. You can watch it over and over again and still find the same scenes hilarious.

As much as I would have loved to this film, I wouldn't trade it for Emperor's New Groove. I'm still thankful they included some of the songs on the soundtrack even if they're not in the film
Because the song is being sung to the god of darkness Supai, who was cut from the final film. Unless you want to bring back the "dim the sun" plot, it doesn't make sense.
I'll be honest. I don't think Kingdom of the sun would have been as Memorable. The Emporer's new groove is such a unique and funny film. Kingdom of the Sun almost sounds like a complicated mess that would be saved by the animation and vocal performances. Plus New Groove Yzma is a heck of a lot more 3 dimensional. Kingdom of the Sun Yzma only seems to be vain, crazy and egotistical. While on brand for Yzma, the comedy of New Groove forces her to react and adapt.
Not to mention that test audiences didn't like the darker tone of this movie and Disney had already suffered financial loss with the similarly dark Hunchback of Notre Dame. If they'd gone ahead with this movie and idea and it flopped, it might have killed their 2D animation even sooner.
I think if a reboot of News Groove was to be made, I would have mixed both elements of the movies A prince about to become emperor with power of the sun yet was not a great ruler who lost favor with the patron god Yzma wanting to rule with eternal beauty, making a deal with her own patron Kuzko would learn humility and how his people live and what responsibilities he had to do for them what transforms him back to a human is when he nobily sacrifices himself (or something) for Patcha to save his life and the sun god rewards Kuzko Kuzko would return to human as a more humble man taking his responsibilities more seriously and become kinder to his people
I feel like everyone just quotes "pull the lever. .... "Wrong lever!" It's just so quotable especially in videogames when you pull a lever and open a door to a bunch of enemies coming to kill you.
I really want disney to make kingdom of the sun as like the father of Kuzco and izmas aunt maybe or something? Idk, she does look a bit different so considering that kuzcow does look very different as well! I would just love to see this realized :(

Disney should remake this into a live action tv series. It's dark, so maybe instead of an ankmated movie geared towards kids, they could do a whole show more for adults. Like how they made a series for Scarlet Witch/or like they're doing now with Agatha, the villain who has a spinoff. It could work because with a series they'd have time to draw out love interests and sub plots and be able to include as many heroes and villains as they like. They wouldn't be forced to cram it all into a 2 hour story.
The old movie basically reflects Yzma and her distain for the sun and thus the sun god emperor who is the mc of the the movie that replace the old one.
They really could rework Yzmas pursuit of the sun into a spinoff movie. More focused on her rerouting her objectives after failing to become Empress. & Include Kuzco, Kronk, & Pacha in the movie. But also play on the Older Woman competing with younger women theme by use of Kuzcos girly friend from his series & Yzma having some beautiful women- sorceress slaves, where some of those slave revolt against her to stop Her & Free themselves.
I actually liked the fact that Yzma was using science instead of magic Because before Her we already had a bunch of Disney villains using magic Like Maleficent ,Ursula ,Jafar Etc

I completely agree, I would love them to try this older concept out instead of mass producing these bleh live action films. However, considering they barely do 2D anymore, something tells me they would end up over working the concept/visuals transforming it into a new 3D form. It feels like nowadays all the 3D movies look like similar character types. Honestly I am happy with what we got but would love to see even a salvaged together verson of this version.

My biggest loss for me in this movie was definitely Yzma She is iconic yes and all But man, she was so MUCH better on the original version... @@amm2media472 The "Tangled" movie had a TV spin-off and prequel to the "Tangled Ever After" short sequel called "Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventure". One of the characters from the show was Varian, a teenage alchemist and an ally turned enemy and then friend of Rapunzel's. He was voiced by Broadway actor, Jeremy Jordan. Two of the artists/writers on the show planned a spin-off for him called "Varian and the 7 Kingdoms" focusing on him finding his long-lost mother and a secret library of Lord Demanitus. He makes a few friends and enemies along the way, and goes through his own coming of age journey. Despite its popularity in the Tangled fandom, the story has never been made into a TV show as the Disney Channel people didn't think the show would be popular enough without Rapunzel in it and asked that they change the main character. The creators refused and the story was scrapped.

Personally it sad that the kingdom of the sun didn’t come out it was originally plan. For one thing particular and that’s the culture. The original seem to have expanded that idea a lot more into the story which gives us as audience more of an idea what the culture of peru is/was like. I can’t say that the emperor’s new grove did that, and that’s because most people I have told about where it takes place they have no idea.
I'm going to be honest I love the movie that we got. But I think this one could have definitely worked too. And also I actually did listen to the original villain song for yzma. It is glorious. They should have added it into the final film?
I'm sooo much interested on the Kingdom of the Sun, Emperor's new groove is funny but that's all. personally i never enjoyed emperor's new groove over movies like Road to El dorado(which also had a very funny side but the story was waaay more captivating)
Though this movie looks so amazing. I don't think I could have the emperor's new groove any other way. For me it's one of my favorite if not my most favorite Disney movie. The comedy is just on point and the story is wholesome. It's a shame we didn't get snuff out the light fully animated, but for it to become this masterpiece of a movie, I feel like the sacrifice was worth it

That's like the only live action I think I would give a pass for haha. Also I don't think a live action emperor's new groove which incorporates the cartoony logic and feel would serve well as a live action so definitely this should be considered if they plan or trying to make emperor's new groove a live action. 😌

Honestly I think I can understand why The Kingdom Of The Sun was scrapped, it did sound like the plot was too complicated with too many elements. Though I still agree that "Snuff out the light" is an absolute banger. I love both the movie that did come out and the original concept, and it's just so sad that we can't have both!

Emperor's "new" groove
When you look at 'Snuff out the Light' you can probably see why Disney changed the plot. Especially when you apply Incan society and religion to it. 'Snuff out the light' is a really; really dark song.
- First thing you need to know to understand the song. Incan religion was polytheistic [many gods] but there was a 'Supreme God' above all others. You could worship whichever spirits and gods you wanted, as long as you worshipped Inti above all others. For example; temples had to have their biggest idol be that of Inti. They could have whatever other gods they wanted in there, but no idol should be larger than Inti. Who is Inti? *The Sun God* . And yes; this means the Incan religion was literally 'Praise the Sun'.
- So; 'Snuff out the light' quickly turns into 'Kill God'. Also; Yzma blameing the sun for her ageing? Not so much. She's blameing God.
- Then you have the line 'Supay Baby turn me on'. Aside from that being a line that... yeah. Supay. He's the Incan god of the Underworld and Death! Incan Hades! He's also the god of daemons. So actually; upgrade him to Chernabog basically. Also; the rest of that verse basically says Supay has made a deal with Yzma to give her immortality and eternal youth in exchange for 'snuffing out the light'. Also; with the supreme god being a god of light; well... a god of darkness and the underworld is basically satan.
- Also there's things like Yzma calling for 'Neophytes' which is a very culty term, calling for literal demons and devils... yeah.
I can see it making people who are WAY too sensitive to stories involving spiritual themes uncomfortable. Hunchback tackled SUPER dark and mature themes in a way kids could understand. Why not this one?
In Princess and the Frog the villain could actually summon demons in it and despite them being portrayed as bad, a bunch of Evangelical soccer moms thought the movie should be rated R because of this. Of course the majority of people outside that vocal minority realized there was nothing wrong with the movie.
That said, I'm not aware if this old religion is still active in Peru, if it is, I could see Peruvians having a problem with it, if hardly any believe in it anymore and just treat it as mythology it would be fine though.
As for the rest of the world, since it's a religion that's not really prevalent anywhere else, it would just come off as mythology to them and a lot probably wouldn't properly understand the gods either so in the end, it would have been fine everywhere else and totally fine if it's a mostly dead religion in Peru.

I grew up with emperors new groove and loved it but now I really would like to see what kingdom of the sun would have been and will it ever come back. Who knows?
This would be so cool to explore if they did a live action remake of New Groove, but simply went with the Kingdom of the Sun version. Same if they did a stage version.
I hope a modified version of Kingdom of the Sun is eventually revived as a prequel to The Emperor's New Groove. Manco could be renamed something other than Kuzco and could be Kuzco's great-grandfather and High Priestess Izma could be renamed something like Oozma/Uzma and be Izma's great aunt or some other more distant relative. Of course, certain other things would have to be changed so Kingdom of the Sun wouldn't be too much like The Emperor's New Groove. Perhaps Manco could start out as a llama, but then turn into other llama-like animals like an alpaca or maybe have the potion wear off after a few scenes. Also, Manco's personality would have to be distinct from Kuzco's. He could still be a bit of a self-absorbed brat, but perhaps that could be a front to cover insecurity.
You should be part of the Disney team!! This is literally the perfect way to implement this idea into the actual emperor's new groove.

That isn't necessarily a deal ender, but I would think it would take a few generations before Izma's family could get back into a position of power because Oozma would be doing openly evil things (trying to permanently blot out the Sun) and that's not something that would be quickly forgotten or forgiven. This would also give more background and subtext to why Azma and Izma were so power-hungry if it happened further back in the past like 100-150 years before The Emperor's New Groove.

I need Disney to retool this idea for their Revival era. It's so epic! Plus, I think it'd be the first movie since the original ENG to have a male protagonist and female antagonist (not counting Zootopia since I consider Judy more of the protagonist than Nick).

I remember being six years old sitting in the cinema and watching this film. This was the first film I, along with my family, watched when we came to the United States. Since reading the Vulture article about Kingdom of the Sun and the documentary Sweatbox, I have thought what if in front of me that day at the cinema was a completely different film? One that was slated to become the Peruvian Lion King? I would have seen my culture represented as a young, Peruvian immigrant and this film (Kingdom) would have undoubtedly become my favorite Disney film. That, to me, is invaluable. While I love Emperor, there's just no comparing the caliber of the film it could have been. Why did they scrap it if it could have been BOTH a comedy and romance with the Prince and the Pauper plot still in tact? You had the classic Disney villain trope and honestly I would have loved to see the alternate sidekick because he's also a symbol of Incan culture. I love Allers because he fell in love with Peruvian culture and actually traveled all the way there. It is my belief that Disney should focus not only on something that's marketable, but to tell a story of culture while entertaining and audience. As Allers said, why not have both? I appreciate Allers and Sting, and hearing "My Funny Friend and Me" has a whole different and bittersweet meaning to me.
I honestly hope they take the Aladdin approach and do a stage adaptation that hybridizes the original concept with the final film.

Personally, I think with Disney’s current direction of live action remakes of their classics they should include the kingdom of the sun. I think they should give it another try so we can have both movies in this universe!

After watching The Sweatbox, I feel really bad for Sting. He seemed so excited to get to work on a Disney film and his role got majorly reduced. I do agree that, just based on the creators describing the plot, there was TOO much going on. Plus, we got Kronk, so net win overall.
The movie got stuck in the development vault for a long time. First it was set for a late 1997 release. But then it was delayed to spring 1998. Then to 1999, then to 2000, and finally to 2001 before being reworked into The Emperor’s New Groove.
Despite the Emperor's New Groove replacing it, I still wish this film was made.

I watched the Sweatbox last night and it was a fascinating film. As an artist and animation fan it was tough watching Roger Allen, Sting, and the rest of the crew screwed over by Thomas Schumacker and Peter Schneider, the execs, after developing this film for 3 years. Personally, I think that the executives were mildly annoying as they came off as more business-focused rather than taking into the craft behind the movie. But they didn't look as harsh as everyone said, just different in thought and mildly annoying, mostly when examining Schumacker. Schneider seemed to be the "good cop" who delivered his opinions in a more respectful tone. A lot of what they said and what the animation crew said provided good lessons for artists who are planning to work in any industry from Graphic Design to Animation. I think seeing how the movie concept evolved from the way it started to the movie we all love today is amazing. I only think if they wanted to show a bit of the Incan culture like they originally planned for Kingdom of The Sun, they could have by incorporating a little bit more of the cultural norms in some small scenes throughout the movie without taking away from The Emperor's New Groove. It would have been more respectful to Allen and the people of Peru, especially since he and the others already spent so much time researching the Peruvian culture. Oh well.
My mom and I love this movie. It's just too funny. It has great actors, music and adult humor. You can watch it over and over again and still find the same scenes hilarious.

I'll be honest. I don't think Kingdom of the sun would have been as Memorable. The Emporer's new groove is such a unique and funny film. Kingdom of the Sun almost sounds like a complicated mess that would be saved by the animation and vocal performances. Plus New Groove Yzma is a heck of a lot more 3 dimensional. Kingdom of the Sun Yzma only seems to be vain, crazy and egotistical. While on brand for Yzma, the comedy of New Groove forces her to react and adapt.
Not to mention that test audiences didn't like the darker tone of this movie and Disney had already suffered financial loss with the similarly dark Hunchback of Notre Dame. If they'd gone ahead with this movie and idea and it flopped, it might have killed their 2D animation even sooner.

Yzma wanting to rule with eternal beauty, making a deal with her own patron
Kuzko would learn humility and how his people live and what responsibilities he had to do for them
what transforms him back to a human is when he nobily sacrifices himself (or something) for Patcha to save his life and the sun god rewards Kuzko
Kuzko would return to human as a more humble man taking his responsibilities more seriously and become kinder to his people
I feel like everyone just quotes "pull the lever. .... "Wrong lever!" It's just so quotable especially in videogames when you pull a lever and open a door to a bunch of enemies coming to kill you.
I think that Disney should revisit the concept and possibly make it a reality in 3D Animation.

Disney should remake this into a live action tv series. It's dark, so maybe instead of an ankmated movie geared towards kids, they could do a whole show more for adults. Like how they made a series for Scarlet Witch/or like they're doing now with Agatha, the villain who has a spinoff. It could work because with a series they'd have time to draw out love interests and sub plots and be able to include as many heroes and villains as they like. They wouldn't be forced to cram it all into a 2 hour story.

They really could rework Yzmas pursuit of the sun into a spinoff movie. More focused on her rerouting her objectives after failing to become Empress. & Include Kuzco, Kronk, & Pacha in the movie. But also play on the Older Woman competing with younger women theme by use of Kuzcos girly friend from his series & Yzma having some beautiful women- sorceress slaves, where some of those slave revolt against her to stop Her & Free themselves.
I didn’t even know there was a prototype movie………. Kinda wanna see that version get made (also 2:31-2:48 Beautiful 😍😍😍)

I completely agree, I would love them to try this older concept out instead of mass producing these bleh live action films. However, considering they barely do 2D anymore, something tells me they would end up over working the concept/visuals transforming it into a new 3D form. It feels like nowadays all the 3D movies look like similar character types.

@@amm2media472 The "Tangled" movie had a TV spin-off and prequel to the "Tangled Ever After" short sequel called "Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventure".
One of the characters from the show was Varian, a teenage alchemist and an ally turned enemy and then friend of Rapunzel's. He was voiced by Broadway actor, Jeremy Jordan. Two of the artists/writers on the show planned a spin-off for him called "Varian and the 7 Kingdoms" focusing on him finding his long-lost mother and a secret library of Lord Demanitus. He makes a few friends and enemies along the way, and goes through his own coming of age journey.
Despite its popularity in the Tangled fandom, the story has never been made into a TV show as the Disney Channel people didn't think the show would be popular enough without Rapunzel in it and asked that they change the main character. The creators refused and the story was scrapped.
I’ll have to put that on my list because I absolutely love Tangled (more than Frozen tbh).

Personally it sad that the kingdom of the sun didn’t come out it was originally plan. For one thing particular and that’s the culture. The original seem to have expanded that idea a lot more into the story which gives us as audience more of an idea what the culture of peru is/was like. I can’t say that the emperor’s new grove did that, and that’s because most people I have told about where it takes place they have no idea.

Though this movie looks so amazing. I don't think I could have the emperor's new groove any other way. For me it's one of my favorite if not my most favorite Disney movie. The comedy is just on point and the story is wholesome. It's a shame we didn't get snuff out the light fully animated, but for it to become this masterpiece of a movie, I feel like the sacrifice was worth it
