  • I return to a town I know well - Bude.
This time, I head up to the Storm Tower via Budehaven to have a look at it again since it moved and now officially reopened.

Let's hope the tower & indeed the lovely bench last a long time. What wonderful sights & sounds on this video.

      Thank you Faith!
Yes, I think that the cliff/coastline that the tower is above now (and further away from) is far more stable than where it was originally positioned.
I think it should be fine there for sometime yet.
Thank you and glad you enjoyed the sights and sounds too.

Enjoying my re-acquaintance with Bude. Such a gorgeous countryside. We stayed in a wee holiday let ion Kilkhampton. The relocation was indeed a sensible thing to do. What a great relocation and restoration job. Rapunzel made her escape Paul. Loved this. 👌🇳🇱🥝🙋‍♀

      Thank you Anita!
      Yes, indeed, Rapunzel escaping!
It really is lovely around Bude, and the town itself is well worth a wander in. Yes, I wasn't far from Kilkhampton too - in Welcombe, just over the Devon border.
      Take care,
      Paul

,Hello Paul - greetings from Poland
That was a lovely video. Beautifully photographed was an excellent commentary. The Storm Tower is a famous landmark and it is superb that it has been moved brick by brick to its new safer site, away from cliff errosion.
The walk was very picturesque and the still photographs at the end of the video were superb - you certainly have a talent

Good morning Michael - sorry I was doing some early gardening while it was cool - hot here now - 24 deg C.
Glad you enjoyed the photos and the video.
Yes, it really is a rather special place - in fact the town is superb - I am probably a little biased though! A very good range of shops, including an independent department store (the rather excellent Wroes) who have just opened a satellite shop nearby specialising in outdoor clothing. Lots of other independents and a good bookshop as well as the best pasty shop in Cornwall (Pengenna Pasties) although, sadly, I can't eat their lovely vegetarian pasties anymore due to my gluten allergy.
      Thanks for your kind words.
      Hoping you are recooperating.
      Take care,
      Paul

This is incredible, the amount of effort it must have taken to move the tower. Fantastic imagery too!

      Thanks so much Jesse!
When I first heard about this moving, I thought it might make a decent subject for a video but I was unable to get to that area, for various reasons ( a very damp autumn, winter and spring being one of them!).
I would have liked to have done a before & after sort of thing, but glad I have seen it now - it is stunning scenery on that section of the coast.
Hope all is well with you and your family.
      Take care,
      Paul

Lovely video Paul. I'd also like to praise your photography too, some great shots. What a laborious job moving the tower brick by brick, take out one brick, walk 100m and lay that one, return for the next one. They'd obviously need to take the bottom ones first, lay those then work their way upwards. The mind boggles 😃. Bude's lovely and much underrated methinks, I'm feeling quite nostalgic to be back there, not been for about 3 years. Keep up the good work.

Yes, an enormous effort by all concerened to get the tower moved into its new home.
I totally agree with you about Bude! I used to work in St. Ives, but I much prefer Bude.
      Cheers,
      Paul

Yes, quite a thing to move the tower brick by brick!
Hopefully, it won't need to be moved again.
      Thanks again!

Thankyou for that lovely video Paul . A lovely place, I think of T9 locos when you mention Bude! Maybe the Atlantic coast express will thunder through again! Or maybe they've got used to the tranquility!

Yes, the T9s! I could almost hear them.....There is an active campaign to reopen the line - be good if it happens, although the bus here has improved, now leaving from Okehampton Station rather than Exeter SD.
      All the Best,

Hi Paul, very interesting to see this tower having now been moved back from the edge of the cliff, maybe it will have to be moved again in the future?, don't think we will see that in our lifetime!. It did remind me of the Smeaton tower, on Plymouth hoe, which was on the Edystone rock. Different sort of tower of course.
It would have been very brave for people to venture out to try and effect a rescue in rough seas, if that was what it was for. A quick search tells me that the building was originally aligned to magnetic north and is now 7° out of alignment. That's 7° in nearly 200 years, still it does seem a lot to me.
In a similar vein there are a number of buildings in Cadiz which were built with look out towers, these were to monitor ships returning back from the Americas. Apparently there are 130 still standing one of which is an octagonal tower called the "La Bella Escondida" because it cannot be seen from the street (Escondida means hidden).
Anyway, very enjoyable to watch, well done!! All the best!!

      I hope so too!
although the coastline is further away, it is also a lot more stable in that section (different geology) compared to the bit that is eroding away.
      Cheers,
      Paul

Some great shots there Paul of your time in Bude. We took the kids camping there a few times, not one of my favourite places but still looks nice.
I would have loved to have seen that Storm Tower taken down & transported to its new spot. It’s such a shame about the coastline corroding but moving things is much better than losing them. Great informative video Paul, thank you for sharing with us x💞😀

We didn't stay in Bude, but just over the border in North Devon - I then had my own seperate stay to catch up with my daughter a little further to the south.
      Great to hear from you.

Nicely made video Paul. When we was there last July the tower was in pieces all lined up in their correct order ready to be rebuilt in its new location. Nice that you can walk inside. We've noticed quite a few overhangs on that section of the coastline but it's staggering how many people we've seen walk almost up to the edge. Looks like you had some lovely weather down there. 😊😊

Yes, fantastic weather when I was in Devon & Cornwall.
I have put three videos out so far, and I have another three to edit - including quite a long one.
Yes, often people don't realise just how dangerous the South West Coast Path can be.
Hope all is good with you.
      Take care,

There are a lot of posters both at Okehampton Station and around the town of Bude promoting the rail campaign, but how feasible it will be, I am not sure.
Glad you enjoyed the video - it was certainly quite an undertaking to move it!
      Cheers,

First of all before I forget Congratulations on reaching 3,000 subs!! I didn’t look on the last video re the WSR so not sure when you reached this total!
This is the only place in Cornwall that I have visited & many years ago now! We were on a touring holiday & I cannot remember where we stayed! Unfortunately I do remember the weather wasn’t good which of course colours any visit.
When you talk about moving structures my mind wanders to the London Bridge Sale! And all that must have entailed!!! I cannot fathom how that was achieved!
I really enjoyed this piece of history and the lovely views & bird songs.
P.s. How did you persuade that sheep to pose for you by the bench?
    Thanks Paul!

Thank you for letting me know that I have just reached 3,000 subscribers!
I didn't notice until I saw your comment. I have just put out a 'thank you' community note for my channel.
I think Bude may very well be my favourite town in Cornwall - highly impressed with the standard of cleanliness in the town and with a good balance of shops, and, not that I can eat them anymore, the best Cornish Pasty in Cornwall (Pengenna's). Terrific beaches and coastline too - it just needs a railway station to get to it!
Glad you enjoyed the video - an amazing achievement in moving the tower by all concerned.
      Thanks again!
      Take care,
      Paul
