What a delightful little station. I loved the carving of the train.

      Thank you Faith!
It is a minor miracle that this gorgeous little station has survived.
It is a lovely spot but it can get a little busy, hence why I chose the day it is 'closed' (museum & cafe) for filming.
Glad you enjoyed it and I hope you have a super weekend!
      Take care,
      Paul

      Thank you Michael!
I think filming this one worked better because it was closed (café and the museum) - it can get very busy (and noisy!) here, but it is fantastic that it was not demolished and it has been fully restored (apart from the buildings on the other platform).
      Thanks so much!
      Cheers,
      Paul

Thank you for finishing off your previous walk - lovely-somewhere to sit & rest & if the cafe is open get much needed refreshment too.
It is in such pretty scenery. I am so glad some of the station has been preserved - somewhere to look at old photos & memorabilia.
I can imagine how busy it does get there. I must say there are places we don’t visit because they get unbelievably busy in the ‘high’ season.
    Thanks Paul.

It is a super place, but it can get very busy here, especially with children, hence why I chose a day when it was closed for filming reasons.
I do remember going into the museum in the carriage when it was open though - lots of old photos and railwayana! Very interesting.
      Thanks so much!
      Take care,
      Paul

      Glad you enjoyed it.
It is a super spot, although it can get quite busy! Best mid-week and earlier in the day. Wonderful that the station has survived though.
      Great to hear from you.

Paul I must apologise. I am watching this backwards. I will watch the Wye video when I get time. This is a fabulous place. I love the old signage. That is my thing for sure. The signal box is Briliant. And good to see the handles outside. I honestly did not know this was there. Would love to take my dad. Thank you for showing us. An absolute joy to watch. I hope you have a great weekend. And we really must catch up soon. 👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Oh yes, this is a really fab place, and not too far at all from where we both live.
Yes, I am sure your Dad would love it here - word of warning though, it can get very busy here! That's why I deliberately went on a Monday when it is 'closed' (i.e. the cafe and the museum, but the car park is still open and you can wander around as you saw in the video) - definitely not at the weekend, or BHs if you can! The car park isn't very big for one thing, and there is nowhere else to park as it is a fair way out of the village.
Hope you have a great weekend too and yes we should meet soon and/or do a collab again.
      Cheers,
      Paul

Wonderfully restored station. Shame it wasn't open on your visit. Looks just as it did when I last visited some years back - excepting the railway carriage and sculptures, which I don't recall. I'm hoping to revisit later this year.

      Thank you Malcolm!
I deliberately chose the day (Monday) when it is closed to make it easier for filming - it can get extremely busy here! However, as you saw even on the closed day, the parking is still open and you are free to wander around. If you do go, probably best mid week, and earlier in the day if you can.
I think the wooden scupltures were added around 15 years ago. My daughter informs me that there is also a turntable pit, which I may include on another Lost Railway Walk on the section heading north to Bigsweir and Redbrook.
      Cheers!
      Paul

Hi Paul, Cracking little video, really interesting. I do not know if you wondered why the Signal Box was an unusually wide distance from the Main Platform but in case you did I will outline the reason for you. At Tintern there was a second platform with an Up Line and Down Line between the platform shown and the second platform. Between the other side of this second platform and the Signal Box was a third line allowing 3 trains to be at Tintern at the same time. The approach to Tintern was Single Track from both directions so to have three lines to put trains in is a most unusual layout.
The line from Monmouth to Tintern Quarry was taken out of use on the 6th January 1964 and from 24th of August 1964 Wye Valley Junction to Tintern Quarry was worked as a Private Siding. Hope your Dad is fully recovered by now. Regards Andrew.

      Thank you Andrew!
Yes, I did know about the additional second platform here, however, I didn't know the full details! Wow! 3 trains to be at Tintern at the same time - I can't imagine that happened too often, but, of course the planners of the Wye Valley Line had big plans for it with freight from the Midlands to South Wales - sadly, never came to anything.
I am surprised the line didn't survive on a tourist basis though - lines like St. Ives and Looe in Cornwall did survive, purely on tourism, and the number of tourists in this area remains significant. Maybe maintenance costs would be too high though, especially with those two tunnels and the two bridges over the River Wye (Tintern and Redbrook).
Thanks so much for the additional information!
Yes, Dad continues to recover - he had a hospital check yesterday and they were pleased with his progress.
      Great to hear from you!
      Take care,
      Paul

@@westcountrywanderings Hi Paul, Glad to read your dad seems to be on the way to things being normal again, I am very pleased for the three of you. Clearly you know much more about the line's hopes than ever I do. I did post a detailed explanation of the working at Tintern on Parkinsons Walks a few years ago, if it is still on the channel it might be worth you reading my comment as it explains the use of the third line. I will have a look at some of your other videos when I get some spare time. Take Care, Andrew.

Yes, it really is a super place to visit for an hour or two. They do good cake in the cafe when it is open as well.

Hi Paul, that is such an iconic place to visit, great idea to visit on a day when its not open and be able to see it all and imagine how it once was.
A great comment from Andrew on the positioning of the signal box. I remember Ron's visit here, it was one of the first videos of his that I watched.
What a wonderful walk that would be if a new bridge could be built and reveal the hidden portal which seems so tantalisingly close, we can but dream!!
    Anyway have a great week!!

      Glad you enjoyed it.
Yes, it would be amazing if the Tintern Tunnel and Bridge could be restored, but I think it unlikely, sadly! But, yes, nice to dream!
You are right - it can get very busy here! I thought I would do it on a closed day for filming purposes.
Take care and hope you have a good week!
      Cheers,
      Paul

Hello Paul. That's been very nicely restored. I like the idea of the cafe being inside that carriage. Do they run anything along that narrow gauge track?

    • @westcountrywanderings
      @westcountrywanderings  3 месяца назад

      Hi Lionel.
Yes, I think it runs every day that the station is open, which is every day, except Mondays - which was the day I deliberately was there, as it gets so busy!
It is operated by Monmouthshire County Council who have owned the site since BR Property Board relinquished control of it.
I have been to the cafe and museum before and it is worth it, as long as it is early in the day.
      Take care,
      Paul
