Thanks for the review, it really is the all-rounder. Already had a B660 and DDR4 with 12400F so it was the obvious upgrade choice, would've loved a 13600K but in a low profile ML03 I'm already reaching limits with a 65W processor let alone 125W. Keen to hear any more tips about undervolting or cooling as well as the box cooler comparison, I upgraded to a Noctua NH-L12S which just fits under 70mm.
Also surprised you're only seeing 123W, mine boosts up to over 160W on Cinebench R23 monitored with HWiNFO.
I've been waiting for a review of this one!
Awesome you covered the 13500
Newer games are likely to benefit from the higher clocked ram, so look for that in future benchmarks in newer titles.
As for the undervolt issue.
Some time ago, years, it was mentioned that a combination of software, possibly even windows scheduler? power / precision boost technologies? (could be very wrong on any one of those parts) would be able to do an auto tune. A sort of automatic overclock if there was head room with power and cooling so thermal throttling. Any one of those maybe what's responsible to circumvent the undervolting.
*Some uber geek, who's been following this particular aspect of computing, maybe able to add in more info than a few scraps that i can barely recall reading or watching sometime ago.
A multi-part undervolting tutorial series for gpu/RAM/cpu to get 'best framerate per watt' would be super interesting and valuable for all 'efficiency build' enthusiasts.
Would love to see this also!
Bry, task to be done here!
I will get onto this next month, I will also get the Nvidia undervolting tutorial done too.
Great video. The 13500 may have been announced at the beginning of January but here in Canada finding one has been a bit of a trick.
As a Canadian, they are Extremely easy to find.
Thank you for his video. Not much coverage on these value CPUs. Much appreciated.
thx for the review
I was wondering wich of both am5/13th gen is more stable and easyer to build for first time builders and for am5 should I try to find a memory kit with expo? or xmp kits will work without issuse
hey Brian great video! those two are awesome bang for buck cpus, i would love to see some content about tuning the ryzen 5700x with project hydra
Like you hinted at in the video, it's a multi-dimensional issue when you're factoring use-case, form-factor, price-to-performance, etc.
From my personal experience, I'm using a 5700X in an ASRock DeskMeet X300 (not the DeskMiniX300, which practically demands an iGPU to function). Even with undervolting, the setup thermally throttles in intense games due to the PSU's fan also functioning as an intake to the rest of the system, essentially pumping hot air into the CPU cooler (this happens regardless of the cooler you use, as it's the PSU's and case's design that leads to this). If you're running on a microATX or a larger ITX system, you likely will not encounter any thermal throttling at all by luxury of having a much larger cooler to work with, as well as a less constricted case design (if you choose your cases well). The 5700X could very likely run well on a flat-facing HTPC chassis, and even overclocked pulls about as much as 78W from the wall.
It's a really efficient CPU for gaming, and even with an average level of cooling, likely gets only as far up as the mid-80s Celsius when performing at its highest levels for hours on end. But when you need power in an extremely small package while working on an energy budget (due to PSU constraints), the 5700X will give you precisely that and more if you decide to upgrade your PSU and allow for some overclocking (it's essentially a hyper-efficient 5800X). If you can't compromise on thermals and noise, the 5600X is better.
That being said, if you do productivity tasks more and more often, the 13500F isn't a compromise so much as it is a necessity. Paying 60$ for a tool that could help you generate hundreds of dollars more is a no-brainer decision at that point.
Ive got a 5700x at 160eur on black Friday, had the money to buy something more powerful, at first I was like oh I should have gone i5 13k, until the cpu arrived, It meets and excels my needs for now and in the foreseeable future without breaking the bank, I love it. Also, I do use it for virtualization, and it gets benefits over a mature platform and having more cores. Pd: Man I think that 4090 has the fan misaligned, check that out.
Hey Br. How is the Idle Power Consumption on these. I want to build a mini itx pc with this one on the stock cooler just for coding a little heavy stuff with 64gb of ram. Will it juice alot or are power consumptions of about 20w realistic on idle ?
Im definitely keeping an eye on this for a new build, I like the extra threads and better low fps in games. It also got a small price cut where I live, and while b760 boards can be pricey, the feature set on the nicer models is quite good

The system with the DDR5 is like £165 more but it has a better motherboard also.

Which board you recommend with this cpu? I need to upgrade my old 4790.. its kinda dying slowly on the Fallout 4 with 300 mod..very sluggish 😒

hey man i'm trying to build a budget pc. so i'm thinking about 12100f vs 12400f and the overall build will be about more than $100 US price difference. I'd play at 1440p and the graphics card will be RTX 3060 ti. Will I get away with a 12100f instead? I don't do other things aside from CAD and maybe try to learn a bit of coding as well. But yea mainly will be for gaming.
I was thinking of pairing a 13500 with an A770 for 1080p 144hz gaming with a little boost to install times etc. Is the 13500 overkill for what I want? Will a 13400 or 13700 be worthwhile?
I'm not getting any notification from your channel though I have subscribed to be notified to all videos.
The 5700X is significantly cheaper here in the UK, £245 for the 13500 vs £180 for the 5700X. B550 boards are also not too bad around £90 for a Gigabyte DS3H variant, so I'd probably go Ryzen, if it were a gaming focussed system for the UK market....
please do not buy a DS3H, the quality is random-chinese-aliexpress-motherboard tier.
bro buy ASRock B550M PRO4 or something a little bit better than ds3h
Ideally need a board with BIOS flashback for the 5700X to be safe, since it came out much later in the cycle. Gigabyte B550 AORUS ELITE V2 is £130, if you hunt around there are probably cheaper options (e.g. Asus TUF GAMING B450-PLUS II for £100 if you don't care about PCIe 4.0). The cooler market looks a bit expensive here at the moment, however.
As for the 13500, the cheapest B660 here seems to be £108, so not $60 as suggested in the video, and ideally you'd want better features than that (BIOS flashback again etc). NZXT's Z690 is only £155 atm so I'd start there as a maximum spend and see if you can find something cheaper.
Realistically you're probably saving just the cost of the CPU with the 5700X build assuming you are fine with the 13th gen box cooler. It's still quite a bit extra though and I do agree that the AMD build makes more sense for gamers. If you're changing the cooler either way the Intel build is probably at least £100 more expensive.
@@twhelan22 I picked up an MSI DDR4 Z690 for 120, and I've seen Asus and Gigabyte UD for around the same on sale. I think in general if you have AM4 5K series is a no brainier, if you have Intel 6-11th gen, 12/13th gen on DDR4 is a no brainier. Building all new it's a toss up. Intel Z690 DDR5 cost less than most AM5 boards so I would give that a slight edge. And if you can use them, the little cores really do put in work and are basically free considering the price of an i5 has been 300 since 10th gen.
same in sweden, the 13500 is more expensive than a 12600k here also. the 5700x is $90 cheaper, or a 5600x is like $110 cheaper
Oh yes Bro! I have been waiting for this. My Friday Night Sugar!
I just finally pulled the trigger and ordered the 5800x3D to upgrade my 2700x. I've been waiting for awhile and it dropped to $300 US so I grabbed it before there all out of stock for good. The 5800x was on sale to at the same time for $200 US I was gonna get that first to save some money but it quickly went out of stock at that price. Either way I would of been happy with either and I can't wait to use it and finally use that extra PCIE 4.0 speeds as I transfer very large file sizes on the regular.
Hi bryan, recently I've noticed that you can undervolt any 13th gen CPU without losing performance after changing the CPU microcode to version 104 (this takes a bit of effort), and this is very easy if you are using an ASUS motherboard since they allow you to change the microcode directly in the BIOS (advanced settings --> tweaker's paradise). By doing this you can undervolt the CPU as much as you want. Would love to hear you talk about this method : )
Really good to know, thanks!

While this isn’t what I would always recommend to others, I went with a new AM4 build. I did this because I was trying to maximize the performance I could get while only spending a certain amount. I couldn’t justify the new platforms for my use case.
I purchased a “decent” ram and motherboard for $100 Canadian, around 75 USD.
I went with the 5700x, but it think the 5600x was the better value buy at the time, I just wanted the extra cores if I need them down the road, but probably won’t.
It should hold me for a few years and the money saved can be put toward gpu upgrades and new platforms later on.
Getting ram and a motherboard for $75 USD is crazy. Nice steal!

Talking about budget, I saw people saying that this Intel CPU takes a lot less power, which surely should reduce cost - especially given the rise in energy prices...

So realistically my 12400 BCLK OC'd to 5GHz all core, with memory at 3375C16 (3600C16 downlocked due to the locked mem controller volts) is going to stomp all over the 13400/13500 except in productivity tasks and memory bottlenecked tasks, as cannot see them making up the 500MHz CPU clock differential even with a little more cache and e-cores.
Would be really interesting to see you bring out the old BCLK OC 12400 and compare against the new CPUs and titles!
12400 BCLK is only possible on certain motherboards right?

TBH even the 13400 is about even with a $250 CAD 5700X (slightly worse in gaming, slightly better in other stuff), BUT even the F version costs ~$40-50 more (at least in Canada). 12600KF is actually cheaper than the 13400F these days with the 12600K costing almost the same as the 13400F...and the older CPU is the better one, plus it can be OC'd. The 12400 is finally cheaper than the 5700X by ~$20 but it's not as good. 13600KF is at another level of pricing ($400) so no point talking about it in this market segment. Anyway point is if a 13400F is already ~$280...well the 13500 costs $350, a full $100 more than a 5700X, with perhaps an F version selling at $320 or so (though I don't see one for sale yet). In any event the 12600K/F seems the best value for LGA1700 in some regards, though the extra cores of the 13500 make it the better performer albeit at around $50 more.
There's a couple other things to mention though... One is motherboards are, by and large, pretty expensive these days. If you want to buy an ITX board for example, almost all of them are pricey. For a Z690 board you're looking at $250 or so minimum. Then the other problem is DDR4 LGA1700 boards seem to be disappearing in favour of DDR5...which is mostly more expensive than DDR4. The only way to get a cheaper board is to go used... Used LGA1700 boards, ppl still ask a lot of money for these, so there's almost no point buying used. AM4 OTOH, lots of ppl are offloading these boards now for cheap! I was able to get an X370 ITX board for $80 this way, which is basically 1/3rd what I'd pay for a new ITX board of any chipset.
Finally, buying a 5700X nets you a code for a COH3, which if you sell for even ~$40 or so, is icing on the cake (or if you want that game, still icing).
So even if you *don't* have a board for either, not only is the 5700X a cheaper CPU brand new than everything but a 12400, (which is worse), you can get a used AM4 motherboard far cheaper than you can get a new or used LGA1700 board. In the end though I was thinking about a 13400 or 12600K, I just couldn't justify what would end up being hundreds of dollars more in *overall* cost just for a bit better performance and a platform that's not deemed a "dead end" by all those nutjobs always going on about "future proofing" instead of things they actually need and will use. Perhaps the prices of Raptor Lake CPUs (and boards) will drop towards the end of the year but for now the 5700X is effectively much cheaper and nearly as good as the lower priced 13xxx alternatives.
Shouldn't you have tested with DDR4 at 3466? Above this it goes to gear 2 reducing performance.
In the us the 5700x has regularly been on sale for sub $200 multiple times with a free game so at this point I still think the 5700x is a better value if you're already on am4 or you can get a cheap set of ddr4 and a b450 board.
To me it came down to how much I wanted to invest for now. I couldn’t justify the newer platforms. Motherboard (decent) and ram came to $100 Canadian, around 75 usd.
Also the free game i got is something I wanted so that was a bonus.
I played the game for half an hour before uninstalling it because it is cr*p, happy with the 5700x though undervolted -30

I picked a 12700f over the 13500 because the 12700f was cheaper ($230 used), has SLIGHTLY more cache (1MB more😆), and although they both have 20 threads the i7 has 16 P-core threads while the 13500 only has 12 P-core threads. Depending on price and your CPU needs, a 12th gen processor might actually be a better buy vs a similarly priced 13th gen processor.
also you have BCLK tuning which you can set your desired stock clock higher than out of the box speed, 13th gen was locked out of this feature except the K-series

For his mobo, we managed to find a 2nd hand x570 aorus xtreme for US$180 (cuz it had no box, slight scratches on the heatsink only too). we got CL14 3600mhz 16gb RAM T-force extreem too for $70 as well. Very nice..
🙂 i saw a review on that cpu on another channel, me mentioned that the 13400 is a different cpu and that the 500 is a better option, me personally I would just wait for xmas end of year sales and pickup either the i5kf or i7kf
It is.
The 13500 is a cutdown 13600k the 13400 has half the ecores and less cache
Planning to buy this cpu, thanks tech yes City
Are you going to look if it's worth to pair the i5 13500 with H610 motherboards ?
It is fine for this👍🏻
The buried lead here is that for most games which modern CPU you pick doesn’t really matter. With middle to highest settings even the i3-12100 isn’t a bottleneck.
Which CPU from Ryzen equal Intel i5 13500 in the same value of specifications?
When is there a video coming of undervolting a Core i710700k with mis motherboard.
I understand that in order to obtain the most accurate resuslts u need to use a most overkill GPU,
but being honest whoever buys a 13500 wont paired with an RTX 4090, perhaps the most fair comparison would be
somewhere betwin RTX 3060 and 4070 or RX 6700 and 6800 or 6900
Good video and effort,
Thx
The Sonic Motherboard definitely goes fast and gives you more FPS. It's scientifically proven.
And it's blue.
Originally I thought the 13500 wasn't a good deal. In part because of how bad the stock coolers have been in the past and really needing an aftermarket cooler. The other thing I've seen with non K series processors has been that they have had limited boast in the past. I have a i5 11400F and it runs at 4.2Ghz all core for a set amount of time before dropping to 3.8Ghz all core and this isn't because of temperature throttling.
Never heard of that shit that's annoying of Intel
That i3 12100 did a very good job at gaming! Sould I build a used system with this CPU if I find a good deal in 2023?
🙂 i have a spare matx board laying around, so I picked up an i3 13100 for it, yay
as a buy of the new intel 13 gen, the i5-13600k,
i can say it does like power i did a cpu test just with cpu-z stress test, it toke about 165-170 watt,
and got pretty hot on my 240 AIO, can't remember the temp, but mean it was like 80 ish
but it is else a great cpu, don't use that much in games thou
For a 3060 ti, is there any reason to upgrade from an R5 3600? Will I see any difference?
I'd just drop a 5600 or 5700 in since you have am4 already
Which resolution? If it's 4k don't bother, lower than get 5800x3d, 5700 is not worth the uplift
I took the Ryzen 7 5700x because I'm on X370 and upgraded from a Ryzen 7 1700. Night and Day! Great value upgrade!
I bought a B760 x DDR4 and an i5 13500. Nothing compares to it in terms of price and usability. It is cooled by deepcool AK400. I use the iGPU as a capture card for gaming/benchmark videos and often edit videos. It's the most ideal budget CPU for creators ;)
What are the temps on gaming with AK 400..am asking bcoz am thinking to go with ak400 rather than 240 AIO but afraid if it will not able to handle🙄
@@Iconic11111 did you buy 13500?
13500 is extremely underrated. It beats 13400 in performance per price
That because the 13400 is overprice the 12400 is a much better buy.
@@grlmgores price is a major factor in performance per $, thanks for pointing that out.
Why do you recommend the 12400 over the13400 or 13500?
Intel should immediately rename 13500 to 13400 the way it should have been.
13400 turned out to be somehow bad, here i3 turned out to be a bad option in general
@@robertt9342 Yes, in AUS a new 12400 is $279 and a 13400 is $389.
The performance is difference is very small.
@@zonelore imo the reason the 13400 is a bad product is because of the price. It's so close in price to the 13500, it's worth paying that little bit more for the extra 4 Ecores.
You should take a look at the i9 11900t vs these types of cpus. It’s honestly looking to be a dope performance per wattage
Great video Bry🥰😇👍! The i5-13500 is proving itself a great, as mentioned, all rounder cpu 💪👍. What people can get in the past couple years, in terms of cpu performance, is quite amazing from both AMD and Intel🥰💪👍 compared to earlier CPUs. We at a point, I feel, that cpu and GPU horsepower has seen a massive jump for gamers, prosumers & professionals alike making better fps or reduce production turn around time.
My guy Brian is just a genius as always. 😊
i5-13500 seems to be a good upgrade option from my i7-7700 (which is 7 years old already, ouch). I looked at Passmark CPU benchmarks list and checked a few AMD options close to the ratings of 13500, but somehow I cannot find any of those AMD CPUs in stores in my country for about the same price as 13500, which is 260 EUR. For example, 3900X costs 450 EUR in the cheapest stores in my country. Maybe Intel has a lobbyist campaign here or something 😀
quick question, Im using ryzen 5 3600 currently, should I upgrade to 5800x3d? or just get an 13500 with B760 mobo? Thanks
5800x3D if you have a good motherboard and AM4 Cooler already - otherwise I would prefer going AMD 7600 (non-x)
just depends if ur build has a good beefy X motherboard, if its something like an A board then u need a new cpu board combo from either platform, use stuff that complements each other
Look at Hardware Unboxed's testing videos, the 5800x3d kicks the crap out of everything but thirteenth gen i9s.
The reason for preventing you from undervolting is a security flaw in Ryzen 7xxx and Intels 12th, 13th and 14th Gen. CPUs
With undervolting you can produce a CPU hang which allows you, to read some encryption keys out of the CPU - it takes time because you only get a few bytes...but if you do it a lot of times you will get the complete key which is supposed to remain in the CPU at all times.
its not better value because you need relative expensive mobo for 13500 and 5700x will be fine with 40-70$ mobo such as a320,350,450 too
