    Sorry for the jittery/shaky cam. I didn't realize it until after the fact (and no one mentioned it in the stream) but I guess OBS was hanging up slightly and having issues rendering. A thousand apologies. Will do better next time (although sadly not in part TWO because it's the same session). Had a blast flying the TOMCAT.

    We find that the F-14 flat spin was induced by the disruption of airflow into the starboard engine. This disruption stalled the engine. Which produced enough yaw rate to induce a spin which was unrecoverable. There was no way Lt. Mover could either see or avoid the jet wash which produced the engine stall. Therefore the board of inquiry finds Lt. Mover is not at fault. His record will be cleared of this incident. Lt. Mover is returned to flight status without further delay!

    In 1988 I was 13 years old and living just outside San Diego, for a short while, and my neighbor was an instructor at Miramar. I think the instructions name was Mike. Well Mike pulled his Ford Bronco out his garage one day and asked his son if he wanted to go to the base with him. I was so jealous and stunned when his son said no! Then Mike turned to me and asked if I wanted to go with him 😲 I had to ask my parents permission but that didn't take long! I had one of the most memorable days of my life!
    I remember us driving down a road inside the base and there was a manhole in the road with wisps of steam or something rising out of it! Then we parked and walk towards the jets with the hanger on my left. There was some training jet to my left that was white and red and looked like a pregnant guppy. There were some "training" missiles on some trolleys there too, must have been sidewinders and I was convinced that they weren't training missiles, they were real!!!
    We went inside the empty hanger and went upstairs. We went into a room that had pictures of some Russian jets on the walls and a picture of Gorbachev I think. Maybe a Russian flag?
    Then we went back downstairs and outside where I walked up some stairs next to an F14 and did my best to look inside! Oh my hat I was in heaven! But the best was yet to come!
    Next we walked out onto the runway and stood out in the open. Mike had a radio that he was using to talk to someone, that someone was one of the guys flying one of the several F14's that I could see making a right turn to line up with the runway! I remember the soot out the jets as the pilots adjusted speed but the best was when they did their touch and go only a few meters away from me and hit the afterburners!!!! OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The flames out the back of the jets engines were blue with a bit of orange in it and the noise was so loud I thought the atoms in my body were going to fly apart!!!!!!
    What an amazing experience!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    My family came back to South Africa after 3 months in the USA but I will NEVER forget that trip to the base to watch the F14 Tomcats!
    Next bucket list thing is to watch a rocket launch... I'm sad I'm going to miss SpaceX's launch next week but i'm sure it's just the first of many launches.

      It's OK mate, I knew all that, I was jesting.. being facetious..in an attempt at humour.
      Oh, and Goose had a son..
      It was Cougar that had the baby daughter, that he was so scared of 'orphaning' before he'd ever even seen her..
      Which always made me wonder what happened to his wife, in the photo, and hence why I asked that question..
      A child is only truly orphaned when both parents are lost, not just one.
      So cougar's line in Top Gun, where he gets asked what's on his mind, he says:
      "My wife & Daughter, sir..I almost orphaned her today, and I've never even seen her.."
      This conclusion is both fallacious, and poor english, if the girl's mother, Cougar's wife, is still alive and caring for her, she's not truly 'orphaned' even if Cougar had been killed that day.
      I think it was just a device used by the script writers for the movie to very simply & easily explain Cougar's concerns, and his earlier mental state & fear, without needing lots of extra weighty dialogue & scenes..
      And in that regard it worked well,
      I can forgive it.
      Sorry for the misunderstanding.
      Cheers! 🍻

    For flat spin recovery I'm usually using asymmetrical thrust, and rudder :) BTW Tomcat is not an easy lover, she is very powerful, but headstrong. At low speed if you are not handle her with care, she is going to the opposite direction haha

    I joined the Navy shortly after TG came out. After doing two Wes Pacs aboard the Carl Vinson and Ranger I got "bored" with seeing, hearing, smelling and feeling Tomcats. The Navy was in a real transitional phase so at any given time we'd have F-14's, the "new" F/A -18, A6, EA6B, A7, S3, Hawkeye, COD, CH46, HH-70's, "Desert Ducks"(CH-53E's) and probably a couple more I missed. Even had an old hangar queen F4 Phantom for the crash/deck crew to practice with(shell only). Even had a C9 do a shit hot one day while out near "Santa Clause"(San Nicolas) island one day. On a carrier, the fwd mess is almost directly under Cat II. So everytime someone was shot you'd hear the shuttle. Out in the fleet, the Tomcat was nicknamed the "Turkey" because when you see them in the groove, you can really see those big control surfaces flapping around...as well as the long straight wing. Last time I saw one was at Oshkosh about 15 years or so ago. Capt Dale "Snort" Snodgrass was doing the airshow demo and a form flight with a P-51 and an F4U Corsair IIRC.

    Yeah, it's an entirely different kitty than an F-18 or F-16: there are no computers that point the jet where you point the stick at for you. That, together with her mass, huge sweeping wings and those top spoilers, make it an art to keep her in the envelope. But, if you can master her, and learn to take advantage of the bucket loads of thrust you have at your disposal, she's hard to beat in a dog fight. ;-)

    • @martinsharrett1872
      @martinsharrett1872 4 года назад

      There are a lot of f15 pilots that will refuse to admit you are correct ;)
      Completely unnecessary flame war begins.......
      Now!!
      The f14 and f15 wargamed against eachother often during the cold war with one of the 2 pretending to be migs with a whole host of requirements and restrictions. So a straight comparison between the 2 almost certainly can not be used from the results of these war games blah blah blah. Both are absolutely amazing aircraft :).

    • @MrFloppyHare
      @MrFloppyHare 4 года назад

      @@martinsharrett1872 Well, as with most match-ups, the determining factor is, who's at the stick. ;-) The Eagle is definitely also a great platform and absolutely deadly in the right hands. Though, with those huge wings out and great thrust, the F-14 has an awesome ability to stay in the kill zone at lower speeds and also has the power and swept wing config to extend... It's a close match so, like I said, it's down to who's at the stick. :-)
