  • Preserving the past with my DIY antique chair restoration journey.
    In my latest project, I had the honor of restoring a broken chair that once belonged to my friend's great-grandfather. This chair had witnessed the passage of time and countless individuals who had taken a seat upon it before it eventually broke and was stored away for two decades. With the desire to bring it back to life, my friend entrusted me with the task of restoring it in a specific manner.
    The restoration process aimed to showcase the chair's natural wood beauty without the use of any stain. We opted for a matte finish to accentuate its authentic charm, while also intentionally preserving some of the imperfections that had accumulated over the years, adding to its unique character.
    The chair featured metal parts that were originally intended to be finished in matte black. Although the powder coating veered towards a satin finish, I personally found it to complement the overall aesthetic and didn't mind the slight deviation.
    As a first-time furniture restorer, this project took me out of my comfort zone. However, I embraced the challenge and poured my heart into each step of the restoration process. The journey allowed me to learn new skills, discover the intricacies of antique furniture, and experience the satisfaction of reviving a cherished piece of history.
    I invite you to join me on this remarkable antique chair repair and restoration endeavor. I've documented the process in a video, sharing the highs, the lows, and the joy of breathing new life into this remarkable heirloom. If you enjoy the journey, I kindly ask you to consider subscribing to my channel, where I share my passion for preserving and rejuvenating treasured artifacts.
    Thank you for being a part of this restoration adventure, and I hope it inspires you to embark on your own preservation projects.

      Me too! I hate when the character is removed! Also when the restorers make every little piece of metal super shiny. Yes, it’s pretty, but not how it would have been (depending on the piece and year)

      @@snackslack9773 restoring isn’t about making things beautiful. it’s supposed to bring back the piece in its original shape and material, to make it clean and useful again not to completely rip it off. if that was the case, there are a lot of builder who recreate furniture but this is a restoration, it’s supposed to be restored to its history.

    My dad and I restored a rocking chair back when the rocks were soft and the air was misty. When we finished we had a upholster make a back for it which was tied onto the back of the chair. We found some nice old timey pattern for the material. We gave the chair to my sister and she nursed her kids on it. The only problem is she won't give it back now she's a grandmother. ;). Wonderful job you did. Nice choice in japanning the metalwork!

    Silky oak.. Man.. So much furntiure floating around in QLD made from that. Especially quarter sawn stuff. Quite envious of that chair, it's a lovely piece. Just to throw an alternate method at you... Would cold bluing rather than powdercoat work on those cast bits? Really happy to see you didn't polish them to a mirror shine though.
    Huge thumbs up my dude. Nice one!!

    • @LittleRestorers
      @LittleRestorers  Год назад +1

      Thanks mate. This one is definitely made in qld, most likely in the Ipswich area.
      Regarding cold bluing- I personally only use it on small, smooth parts.
      Cast iron has so much pitting, so you need something more viscous to get into those tiny holes. Power coating is obviously more durable but good old enamel paint will do just fine (you can even use fillers & primers)
      So no, I wouldn't recommend bluing on bare rough cast iron. Oh and its much more expensive also.
      Thanks for watching. Great question and hope my answer helps 😉👍

    Stunning job. So sad that it was left to dry out and weather to grey, but you returned a beautiful wood to be admired, appreciated and used again. A couple of questions - what was the brown glue that you used, and what type of black paint did you use on the metal that needed to be heated in an oven?

    • @LittleRestorers
      @LittleRestorers  11 месяцев назад +2

      Thanks for watching. The glue is Hide glue. Originally used in antique furniture and musical instruments. The bottled version is more convenient, but a lot of people still make their own.
      The metal parts were powder coated. Much more durable than regular paint.

    Glad to see the little angels are back!
    Rejoining the seat appeared to be difficult. A tip there for future projects is if the wood has shrunk as badly as your chair, shave a millimetre of the ends of the dowels before rejoining. The holes shrink as well. It’s worked for me for years every time.

    After re watching many of your videos that you have posted over the years for the second, third time and sometimes fourth times, It is obvious to see your skill level increasing from great to masterful and this peice is proof.
    I did notice your material choice has changed.
    You seem to have moved from wire wheels to sandblasting and from Rustoleum spray in the back yard to powder coating inside.
    If I may ask, have you seen a large difference in the end quality of product or speed of restoration?
    Has the wear and tear been reduced?
    Finally, would you recommend sandblaster and powder coating over the older style?
    Loved the chair, keep up the amazing work.

    • @LittleRestorers
      @LittleRestorers  Год назад +2

      Thank you for watching and re-watching. Am glad you noticed the progress and as you can see, no 2 projects are the same and I am constantly learning as I go.
      Big difference between sand blasting and wire wheel as blasting can get into places the wire wheel cannot and it does a much better job at stripping down to clean bare metal.
      Powder coating is more durable than spray paint, but also you can clean and paint a part and its ready to use in 1 hr as opposite to letting paint dry for days.
      Obviously everything has its pros and cons. There's a limit to the size I can powder coat as a have a tiny oven due to space restrictions.
      I would say, its not a complete shift to one type but more ability to have more options to work with.
      Also bear in mind that every project cost money and an enormous amount of time spent filming and editing.
      When I started less than 3 years, I had never restored anything in my life. Watch some guys on youtube and thought I could give it a crack 🤣.
      Thanks again for the support. It means a lot 🙏

    Super! What is the degassing phase?

    • @LittleRestorers
      @LittleRestorers  10 месяцев назад

      Thanks for watching. Degassing ensures that any moisture or contaminants that could cause outgassing are removed prior to powder coating. Outgassing creates pinholes and imperfections in the powder coating, which can then allow moisture to penetrate and rust the base metal.

    Very well done!👍🏼👍🏼 Not bad for a first timer with timber! Over time, you'll find yourself restoring some really odd things! Once the bug bites... 🤣🤣

      Haha, thanks for watching. The wife's already asked me to restore this broken chair we've been hanging on for years. I think its gonna be an even bigger challenge than this one 😅

    Did the client want you to get rid of all the patina?

    • @LittleRestorers
      @LittleRestorers  Год назад

      Thanks for watching. Its been restored just like my friend wanted it. Back to the original wood colour " sanding off the stain" with a matt finish. Actually left a few minor imperfections in the wood to retain some of the character.

    Just gotta tell you man awesome restoration. That hide glow is a pain in the ass to work with. But it gives you a lot of time to make adjustments if you need it great work brother

      Thanks brother- yes I had issues with the Hide glue not going hard after a couple days. Found it worked better if I warmed up the glue a bit first 😉👍

    What kind of glue is that?

    • @LittleRestorers
      @LittleRestorers  Год назад +1

      Hide glue ( made from animal hide) - its been used for centuries to make furniture, musical instruments...ect. The bottle version is easier to use and has more working time - Thanks for watching 👍

      If you get your hands on something similar and only use carnauba wax, I want first shot at buying it. I think the chair lasted as long before snow was the wood could flex.

    Вероятно, у вас хороший доход, раз вы можете тратить своё время на такие вещи. У меня дома небольшая литейная мастерская и я еле-еле свожу концы с концами, хотя могу делать высокохудожественные вещи.
