- Preserving the past with my DIY antique chair restoration journey.
In my latest project, I had the honor of restoring a broken chair that once belonged to my friend's great-grandfather. This chair had witnessed the passage of time and countless individuals who had taken a seat upon it before it eventually broke and was stored away for two decades. With the desire to bring it back to life, my friend entrusted me with the task of restoring it in a specific manner.
The restoration process aimed to showcase the chair's natural wood beauty without the use of any stain. We opted for a matte finish to accentuate its authentic charm, while also intentionally preserving some of the imperfections that had accumulated over the years, adding to its unique character.
The chair featured metal parts that were originally intended to be finished in matte black. Although the powder coating veered towards a satin finish, I personally found it to complement the overall aesthetic and didn't mind the slight deviation.
As a first-time furniture restorer, this project took me out of my comfort zone. However, I embraced the challenge and poured my heart into each step of the restoration process. The journey allowed me to learn new skills, discover the intricacies of antique furniture, and experience the satisfaction of reviving a cherished piece of history.
I invite you to join me on this remarkable antique chair repair and restoration endeavor. I've documented the process in a video, sharing the highs, the lows, and the joy of breathing new life into this remarkable heirloom. If you enjoy the journey, I kindly ask you to consider subscribing to my channel, where I share my passion for preserving and rejuvenating treasured artifacts.
Thank you for being a part of this restoration adventure, and I hope it inspires you to embark on your own preservation projects.

Silky oak was my late father's favourite wood. I had forgotten how beautiful it is when it's properly finished. Thank you so much! You have made my old heart happy ❤
Thank you very much for checking out the video. Glad its brought back good memories for you 👍
Pretty damn good..more complex than it at first seemed.
Thanks for watching- yeah once you start taking it apart you find more and more pieces 😁👍
I must say, I adore a creator who actually just restores and doesn’t mess around with the imperfections (in the metal) of the past. This is what a true restoration looks like!! Amazing work! Definitely subscribed.
Thanks for watching and subscribing. Really appreciate your comment 👍
Me too! I hate when the character is removed! Also when the restorers make every little piece of metal super shiny. Yes, it’s pretty, but not how it would have been (depending on the piece and year)
@@hhansanfranz exactly!!
@@snackslack9773 Thanks for sharing your opinion. Obviously you are entitled to think whatever you want and your choice to take to the keyboard to express it.
Thanks for stopping by.
@@snackslack9773 restoring isn’t about making things beautiful. it’s supposed to bring back the piece in its original shape and material, to make it clean and useful again not to completely rip it off. if that was the case, there are a lot of builder who recreate furniture but this is a restoration, it’s supposed to be restored to its history.
My dad and I restored a rocking chair back when the rocks were soft and the air was misty. When we finished we had a upholster make a back for it which was tied onto the back of the chair. We found some nice old timey pattern for the material. We gave the chair to my sister and she nursed her kids on it. The only problem is she won't give it back now she's a grandmother. ;). Wonderful job you did. Nice choice in japanning the metalwork!
Thanks for watching. On the good side, your chair is still in the family 😁👍
Nice work, I really enjoyed watching this.

Magic hands! From trash to treasure! Simply wonderful, mate! Love the little one’s involvement too. 🦘❤️
Thanks for watching. Really appreciate your comment. Little ones are always keen to help on every project 😁 🇦🇺
I can’t believe you have this excellent video on here! I got one exactly like this in much worse condition, and it’s so good to see how it will work! I also have one I use a lot. So, now I can maintain it better. Tysm!
Am glad you found my video. I hope it can help you in some way. Thanks for watching 👍 😊
Wonderful
Thank you again for watching and commenting 👍
Всё классно! И ребёнок хорошо в кадр вписывается. Ещё бы края у металлических деталей обработал напильником, то было бы просто превосходно)
Thank you for watching and leaving a comment. Much appreciated 👍
It's ready for another 100 years. Wonderful restoration.
Thanks for watching. Sure is 😉👍
Just beautiful, what a transformation. You are a man of many talents my friend including turning metal into gold😂😂😂.

Thanks for watching. All the best with your project .👍
Excellent work - such attention to detail and it was rewarding to see the wood reclaim its colour. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching. Appreciate your nice comment 👍
excellent travail
Merci beacoup 👍
This turned out fantastic and was extremely satisfying to watch. I have one just like it (although it’s in worse condition) in my shop. This gave me the inspiration to finish it. But what I really wanted to comment on, was the scene where you were rearranging all the metal pieces. I see you and I love that you kept it in the video! It made me go ahhhh and smile. I do that a lot, it just has to feel right ya know?! I also love to sort through and separate old screws and hardware into organized containers by size, color, flat or rounded heads, etc. Anyway, have a great day 🤓
Thanks for watching. I really enjoyed reading such a great comment. Glad my humble work has inspired you 😊👍
Thank you for sharing the history of the chair. Also, I watched with interest because I have an old piano stool with a similar mechanism that needs repair.
Thank you for watching. All the best repairing yours 👍
Great job 1 👴🏻🇦🇺

Very enjoyable.Beautiful designed chair. I'm glad you didn't polish all the metal parts to death...
Thanks for watching and glad you enjoyed it. Tried to preserve the metal pieces in their original condition 😊👍
Phenomenal work, very thorough restoration of the old chair and of course also super restoration of the old screws with the help of a little helper. Kind regards

Beautiful restoration 🎉🎉

👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Thank you 👍
Great job. It does look another like beech to me.
Thanks for watching. That's good old Qld silky oak 😊👍
@LittleRestorers Not something we see here in Canada.I had to look it up, has a great colour to it.
@sid515able Yeah, it's native to parts of Australia and used to be popular back in the days for furniture making.
good cleanup job; the powder coating was a clever addition and easy on the glue; you are too generous.
Thanks for watching 👍
Great job!👍
Thank you Magdad 😊
Looks new.👍
Thanks for watching mate 👍
Lindo trabalho 👏👏👏
Thank you for watching 👍
Lindo, adorei.
Thank you 👍
Very very nice you can’t beat that silky oak especially one as old as that, it just gets such a rich beautiful color. Family heirloom saved!
Thank you for watching. All the old silky oak furniture i've come across had been stained, so I didn't realise how light the natural wood colour actually is. The matt finish was the owners request. Might be an unusual choice for a lot of people but I think it was a really good decision. 👍
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Thanks for watching 👍
Amazing job! I am a first-time furniture restorer as well and have a bit of a project in my hands with a similar chair. Mind if you could point me to some resources on what to do with the metal parts? I couldn't quite tell what the steps are from watching your video.
Thanks for watching. I sandblasted the metal parts and powder coated them. I guess if you don't have those tools available, you can wire wheel the parts. ( there are some that you can attach to a hand drill) then use spray paint or even hammerite.
@@LittleRestorers That was such a quick response!! Thank you for the help :)
Silky oak.. Man.. So much furntiure floating around in QLD made from that. Especially quarter sawn stuff. Quite envious of that chair, it's a lovely piece. Just to throw an alternate method at you... Would cold bluing rather than powdercoat work on those cast bits? Really happy to see you didn't polish them to a mirror shine though.
Huge thumbs up my dude. Nice one!!
Thanks mate. This one is definitely made in qld, most likely in the Ipswich area.
Regarding cold bluing- I personally only use it on small, smooth parts.
Cast iron has so much pitting, so you need something more viscous to get into those tiny holes. Power coating is obviously more durable but good old enamel paint will do just fine (you can even use fillers & primers)
So no, I wouldn't recommend bluing on bare rough cast iron. Oh and its much more expensive also.
Thanks for watching. Great question and hope my answer helps 😉👍
Stunning job. So sad that it was left to dry out and weather to grey, but you returned a beautiful wood to be admired, appreciated and used again. A couple of questions - what was the brown glue that you used, and what type of black paint did you use on the metal that needed to be heated in an oven?
Thanks for watching. The glue is Hide glue. Originally used in antique furniture and musical instruments. The bottled version is more convenient, but a lot of people still make their own.
The metal parts were powder coated. Much more durable than regular paint.
👍
Now that would be a chair I would be proud to call my own. It looks so comfortable. You’ve done an amazing job with that. The editing and effort gone into the production of the video is evident. Outstanding mate.
Glad to see the little angels are back!
Rejoining the seat appeared to be difficult. A tip there for future projects is if the wood has shrunk as badly as your chair, shave a millimetre of the ends of the dowels before rejoining. The holes shrink as well. It’s worked for me for years every time.
Good to see another restoration from you. I thought the trike was good, but this is exceptional. 👏👏👏
Thank friend for your usual support. Now that's a good tip about shaving off the dowels. I was careful to only lightly sand between the 2 pieces and still ended up with that very thin gap. Would have gone unnoticed, I suppose, if it was getting stained.
🤣👍
Another outstanding resto , and a totally different way to go doing a wooden chair after that wonderful trike restoration you did last time . Came out supurb , you should open an olde worlde children's nursery supply shop you'd need a fortune !!
Thanks Jim. I might end up spending more money on the fix up part than the selling 😁👍
Hide glue. Nice. That chair can come apart in another 100 years if some repair is needed.
Thanks for watching. Yes, cannot go wrong with good old hide glue 😊👍
After re watching many of your videos that you have posted over the years for the second, third time and sometimes fourth times, It is obvious to see your skill level increasing from great to masterful and this peice is proof.
I did notice your material choice has changed.
You seem to have moved from wire wheels to sandblasting and from Rustoleum spray in the back yard to powder coating inside.
If I may ask, have you seen a large difference in the end quality of product or speed of restoration?
Has the wear and tear been reduced?
Finally, would you recommend sandblaster and powder coating over the older style?
Loved the chair, keep up the amazing work.
Thank you for watching and re-watching. Am glad you noticed the progress and as you can see, no 2 projects are the same and I am constantly learning as I go.
Big difference between sand blasting and wire wheel as blasting can get into places the wire wheel cannot and it does a much better job at stripping down to clean bare metal.
Powder coating is more durable than spray paint, but also you can clean and paint a part and its ready to use in 1 hr as opposite to letting paint dry for days.
Obviously everything has its pros and cons. There's a limit to the size I can powder coat as a have a tiny oven due to space restrictions.
I would say, its not a complete shift to one type but more ability to have more options to work with.
Also bear in mind that every project cost money and an enormous amount of time spent filming and editing.
When I started less than 3 years, I had never restored anything in my life. Watch some guys on youtube and thought I could give it a crack 🤣.
Thanks again for the support. It means a lot 🙏
👏👏👏👍👍👍🤩🤩🤩
Thanks for watching 👍
I restored one identical to this last year. It was from the university of Washington. Which is now called something else. Northwest I think.
Thanks for watching. How awesome. This one was made on the other side of the world in Australia 👍
Awesome video and the chair came out great. Chairs can be a challenge, especially the glue ups!
Thanks for watching. Was a challenge indeed, especially my first time restoring furniture 😅👍
Brilliant work 👍 loved the editing and the magic tricks. A very lovely piece to restore, I imagine this must have taken a lot of work. Very very impressive. A job very well done.
Thanks mate. As you know ,10 secs of video is sometimes 10 hours of work and 2 hours of spitting the dummy 🤣👍
Great video. I am working on a 40"s model office chair. Stripped screws etc. Dirty wood, etc. HELP?
Thanks for watching. Something that old is most likely stuck together with Hide glue. Some steam might help to losen the joints if you need to take it further apart. Sanding back to clean wood is the most time consuming part. If the screws are too rusty, new brass srees could be the alternative. 👍
Fantastic as always! Those chair are actually comfortable too! Very nice!!!
Thanks for watching as always. Appreciate ur support 👍
Awesome job, looks great! 😃👍
As always, thank you so much John for your support. I feel like even if the views are inversely proportional to the video qualities, the support from people like you is what keeps me going. 😉👍
Excellent! Question: this chair have weels?
Thanks for watching- No, it does not have wheels.
Das Holz scheint sehr weich zu sein. Was für ein Holz ist das? BTW: sehr schöne Arbeit!
Thanks for watching. The wood is Silky Oak. It is an Australian hardwood 👍
Воспитание с семьи. Уже и ребёнок стремиться созидать!
Thanks for watching 👍
Super! What is the degassing phase?
Thanks for watching. Degassing ensures that any moisture or contaminants that could cause outgassing are removed prior to powder coating. Outgassing creates pinholes and imperfections in the powder coating, which can then allow moisture to penetrate and rust the base metal.
@@LittleRestorers interesting, thanks!
Very well done!👍🏼👍🏼 Not bad for a first timer with timber! Over time, you'll find yourself restoring some really odd things! Once the bug bites... 🤣🤣
Haha, thanks for watching. The wife's already asked me to restore this broken chair we've been hanging on for years. I think its gonna be an even bigger challenge than this one 😅
@@LittleRestorers Better a chair for your wife than the cabinet for mine! Curved glass front... 🤣🤣
@@KevinD_33x150 😂😂😂
Did the client want you to get rid of all the patina?
Thanks for watching. Its been restored just like my friend wanted it. Back to the original wood colour " sanding off the stain" with a matt finish. Actually left a few minor imperfections in the wood to retain some of the character.
Nice work.
Thanks for watching 👍
Just gotta tell you man awesome restoration. That hide glow is a pain in the ass to work with. But it gives you a lot of time to make adjustments if you need it great work brother
Thanks brother- yes I had issues with the Hide glue not going hard after a couple days. Found it worked better if I warmed up the glue a bit first 😉👍
What kind of glue is that?
Hide glue ( made from animal hide) - its been used for centuries to make furniture, musical instruments...ect. The bottle version is easier to use and has more working time - Thanks for watching 👍
My Dad had an antique oak chair that swiveled, his ex boss laid claim to it and never gave it back
!
It had been his grandfather’s chair.
Thanks for watching. What a shame he never got his chair back 😢
You can check out my latest video here : ruclips.net/video/j3VfJQtgjw8/видео.html
If you get your hands on something similar and only use carnauba wax, I want first shot at buying it. I think the chair lasted as long before snow was the wood could flex.
@elizabethwatson71 Thanks for watching. I'll definitely consider that 😉
Beautiful work on this chair. I love it
Thanks for watching. Glad u love it 👍
