  • In an office in India, a cadre of Internet moderators ensures that social media sites are not taken over by bots, scammers, and pornographers. The Moderators shows the humans behind content moderation, taking viewers into the training process that workers go through in order to become social media’s monitors.

    I'm a content moderator. I do in fact see the worst the internet has to offer and at the end of the day you are mentally exhausted but you have to keep in mind, there are a lot of jobs like this where people are exposed day in and day out to the worst humanity has to offer. A lot quit, a lot can't stomach it, and it changes some people's attitudes about the world, but as with this job or any other in the same boat, someone has to do it. I compartmentalize my job and at the end of the day I unplug and go see the beauty of the world. I go hang out with my friends and people who have love and kindness in their hearts and I think of all those people whom I am helping not see what I have to see. Anyone who's had a job like this gets that. The minute you start believing that there is no good left in the world because of what you do, that's when you lose it and lose touch because the world will never be all good or all bad---it's a mix of both, but I'm doing my little part in the grand scheme of things to help push the line to add more good back into the world for others.

      Used to be a game content moderator, although the companies remind you constantly this is “normal customer service” and other moderators encourage “other people have it worse let’s be thankful” the type of systematic apathy common in the industry today should have no excuse. Most companies are sending young people eager to get a job in games or tech companies into dealing with mental war zone like imagery and comments without any preparation or strategy when they undergo trauma. This should change, when moderators become jaded and tired they obviously have less sympathy for angry users threatening them. It’s a cycle of madness and apathy that hurts people on the internet. Moderators would be doing everyone a favor by insisting on better treatment for themselves by their companies.

    Compelling, to say the least. These style of documentaries offer the most accurate depictions of a story and issues surrounding it, because they never end with a clear message or a clear answer. In life, things are never black-and-white but fall in grey areas like these

      Just because you ignore doesn't mean that doesn't happen. You can live your life ignoring upsetting situations, they will nevertheless occurr. It's because I've empathy that I can see how much impact those psychos can have in my or your life on a daily basis. So be more respectful and try to understand who are the real psychos. Thoose who ignore this crazy world or whom wants to fight against it?

    Now we know who decides what we see and what we don't. In another documentary about content moderators on the Philippines it was pointed out that NGOs who prosecute war crimes have a hard time because pictorial proof of atrocities are immediately deleted after being uploaded. There's many sides to it. I find it incredible that they only have 2 seconds to decide whether to delete a photo or not. What a tough job!

    • @Datanalystravel
      @Datanalystravel 5 лет назад +4

      That's not really accurate and after some practice you don't really see the video or the photo, you look at it and your brain just look at the infraction. And you don't have only 2 sec. Some take 2 sec, some take 30. Depends on what you're watching. It's impossible to watch a video and take the same time to decide as you take on a meme.

      Proper law enforcement must be involved. When they see horrible, illegal things they should be turned over to law enforcement, who then must follow up, doing their best to track down the perpetrators and rescue the people and animals being victimized, if at all possible.
      If not, then these companies are aiding and abetting the worst of criminals, and are responsible for those they leave unhelped.
      If the moderators knew that they may well be helping the victims, as it absolutely should be set up, then they could live with the fact that they really are doing heroic work.
