How F*cked Up is Facebook? | Should You Be Afraid?

- Facebook has long been the "cool" social media platform outlasted its peers from the mid-2000's. It was the central hub for a whole generation to meet, plan events, and archive their youths. But somewhere along the way, Facebook turned into a toxic, political wasteland filled with hate speech and disinformation. How did this platform go from an innocuous social networking site to tearing apart the social fabric of society? VICE producer Zeke Spector goes down the rabbit hole to ask if we should be afraid of Facebook.

Parents used to warn kids of spending too much time online. Now they endlessly scroll Facebook and get radicalized by conspiracy posts
Seriously, the tables have turned. I had to sit down and have a talk with my 70 year old mom about how not everything on the internet she sees is factual. She's retired now and is just discovering the internet and social media.

You forgot to mention grandparents
It's not just Facebook, on Twitter there is a lot of far left wing agenda and fake accounts to push a view point. It's best to do your own research, read articles from reputable scientists etc rather then listening to BBC news etc
This.
Deleted my Facebook account in 2011, deleted my Instagram account in 2017, and deleted my Twitter account in 2020. All I have is RUclips. Which I use mainly for cooking videos, and home improvement tips. Barely ever leave a response. I feel like I'm reconnected with myself. Like the real me was gone but is now back.
Well, 2011 was actually stil far away from the cancer it would become after 2016 or so. Trust me, you didn't get to experience all the bs from users. Everybody becomes an expert suddenly on such platforms.
Instagram is kinda similar, but still far away from being as cancerous. Twitter, well I never understood the hype behind it. Never used it.
@@Lucarinho oh, trust that IG is also pretty cancerous for all those “activists” spreading biased information to their flock of followers and deleting comments that correct/call them out on their lies and BS. It’s another hive mind like FB but with pretty pictures and virtue signaling

I disabled my Facebook an year ago mostly because I was no longer using it to connect with friends but I was watching content shared by big pages and I was replying to comments by people whom I would never meet. It became a useless endeavor. Instagram felt even worse. People who are always happy and living vibrant colorful lives. Come on, that can't be true Twitter is full of opinions of anyone who can say whatever they think is right regardless of truth. It was simply bad for my health. Now I have divorced social media, I have more time for me. I no longer am being affected by some nobody's misinformed comment. I am no longer comparing myself with other's lives. I am happy for someone who enjoys social media but it clearly isn't for me
I was skeptical of Facebook from the beginning. I knew no company could survive without selling something. I assumed early that it was selling information about its “customers.” I realized early that those who thought they were customers were actually the commodity. I never signed up.
Even here on RUclips, I purposely search opposing opinions. Anytime I fall into confirming my biases, I can see the algorithm attempting to manipulate me.
The only way to combat the manipulation is to intentionally search away from its recommendations. As a result, I get recommendations that are in no way congruent. I get recommendations from the far left to the far right, and everything in between. It is the only way to get all the available news. I figure if I get Beau of the Fifth Column and Ben Shapiro recommended at the same time, I am one step ahead of the algorithm.
I cannot explain why I sometimes get recommendations for things like ice fishing videos that are ten years old and only have 12 other views.
Idk because you need to chill sometimes not everything is political.

It's just 'ultra-crazy' at the moment because of lock-down. People don't have jobs, which is fine for people who never did (not great, of course, but fine), but it's sending 'busy-busy' types of people completely bananas. Lol.
(I'm finding that I 'over-comment' on YT and FB lately. Like 'oh, why can't I just shut up?') The rule of thumb is still the same though: 'when we find that we're no longer making sense, even to ourselves, it's time to read a book or watch TV instead'! Or spend some time with actual humans, yes. I almost didn't even think of that. Perhaps that's symptomatic of something-or-other. God bless, anyway. :)

Facebook was originally just a place to share some photos and your list of favorite movies, tv shows, music etc. Then Zuck turned it into "life invader" as the GTA 5 devs have labeled it
A fellow GTA5 nerd! 😂
True story. Used it mostly to poke girls in the OG days.
After a while it just becomes about the $$$
It was literally like myspace.
Ripped off the idea of myspace mixed in with a bit of "dating site" drama, then it took off into a data hoarding stream for Zucc cause he realised how much money he can make off of our data.
I don't blame him partly. He has provided for his family and kids for generations to come. But he has also destroyed his name in the process by being a shill and by bending over to rich cronie investors. I bet he has been blackmailed by said investors as well. He was just a kid. If you watch his earlier interviews he seemed much more genuine about Facebook.
Everyone knew that he made it to get laid, but nobody cared because everyone WAS using it to get laid, attend parties, gossip a bit et cetera.
It was something new and exciting to be able to connect with all your friends instantly. But little by little hackers and the media started uncovering the underlying layers of Facebook as it kept growing. Uncovering the corruption and the filth.
These rich fucks grabbed him and moulded him into a complete monster obsessed with money and data. But he is an adult, and he knew the consequences to his actions, so all the responsibility lies upon his shoulders. If he wanted to change facebook, and be more privacy friendly, Zucc would have done it years ago. But that's the thing...he DOESNT CARE.
That one mission is so satisfying.
The next time Facebook says it’s too hard for them to remove hate content, remember that they turned off all Australian news at the flick of a switch once.
To be fair, it’s much easier to cut off access by region rather than by nature of content.
@@nottroy4500 It was the “nature of content” that was banned, though. Essentially any page flagged as news was killed, all posts hidden.

When ppl wake up and realize this and get off Facebook they’ll live happier lives. You don’t need Facebook no matter how much you think you do.
Don't forget that Facebook owns Instagram and Whattsapp .
Not really it's just as easy to stop using Instagram and although harder many people have stopped using what's app and started using alternatives such as Signal, I find Facebook services a lot easier to avoid than Google services personally, although I did switch from using the Google search engine to ecosia although I think it still runs on open source chromium software

They bought WhatsApp so they could create 1) Facebook Messenger 2) get more specific data on their users than simply metadata and likes and 3) try to corner the market on messaging apps. This is what makes them a monopoly.

The problem with Facebook is not the platform, it's the people who post on it. There are thousands of social networks, if Facebook went down another would appear to replace it

I guess like anything it has its good and bad but in my very own personal view facebook has hurt peoples socialization skills. Sure Ive kinda kept up with friends who now live far off but otherwise it serves no real purpose for me. I deleted Facebook a couple years ago. I'm not sure if anyone else went through the process recently but it was actually tricky for me to figure out how to completely delete my account. I had to put in a request to delete and tons of steps with questions. They definitely don't want people to leave.
I did it today, I had to use a guide to do it.
I find it so creepy how Facebook promises to have you account fully deleted in two weeks after you request it but then dwn. Years later I signed up to make a new one, thought I'd reach more people to share art with, it just logged me into the old one. It was so weird. I gave up. Facebook starting in a creepy way rating college girls without permission to even put em on there in the first place (so I learnt). I'm not supprrised it's still moving dodgy.

i never got attracted to the magic of Facebook , its Super Hyped with no real reason. its uses are just the facebook chat that is easy because many people has facebook and can be used for important chatting. and the news feed that gives you some idea about people's random events around you and some pages and groups where you can get some info about a product or service or ask for information.
the problem with facebook and other social media websites is the tendency of people to abuse it by competing who would appear more cool and everyone starts documenting most of their life into diaries and photos on facebook to make oneself appear more appealing and attractive. this is the toxic part about it. its rarely used for deep logical benefecial communication , its more designed for superficial displays.
another big problem with social media is that every body is more hooked online to try to seem cool instead of meeting around and sharing experiences , ideas and common projects in real life.

Seriously! Who the F is on Facebook all the dang time? Boring!
Have been inactive on FB for about 6 months now. I only check in every once in a blue moon.
I think it has been problematic ever since Zuck decided that Facebook should invade everyone’s life like a cancer and snarfle all the personal data it can get. And that was a long time ago. For me, it was 2019/2020 that really sent me over the edge and I liked what I saw less and less. I was just doomscrolling for the past year and a half. Mentally, it did me no good whatsoever. I felt miserable most of the time because everything was doom and gloom and hate and violence, racism, conspiracist crackpots and „Community Standards“ (community standards, my ass...If I call out a racist and bigoted shithead, I get flagged for violating community standards, but if they unabashedly rile others up to commit violent crimes against minorities, it is suddenly „not in violation of the community standards“ and therefore a-ok? Are you fucking kidding me? Oh boy, you people have some serious issues.)
Sure - there were brief light and truly enjoyable moments among my own Fb circle. But for the most part, negativity drowned out everything else. In the end I was just so sick and tired of it all. It put me in a foul mood permanently. At some point it just clicked and my mind went „You know what - I just don’t care anymore. None of this is worth it. Not worth my time and energy. I am just over this. I do not have enough spoons in a day to deal with this. Time to bow out quietly.“
I may have a lot fewer interactions with people now but the ones I have are also ones I really value and appreciate. Problem is, it can be lonely at times and it makes me feel left out which is not so nice. But whenever I log back in to see if I have any messages, it usually takes 10 seconds of feed scrolling tops and I remember why I am not active anymore.
So if anyone asks how fucked up Facebook is, the answer is „yes“. It is pretty much FUBAR if you ask me.
It may have started as a good idea. But then money got involved, people got greedy, and idiots happened. And that was the end of it.
When they started banning me for speaking up for myself that's when I left it alone...
I feel very fortunate that I deleted mine in 2009. Never felt like I was missing out.

Good video and thank you for making it. I learned about a few things I didn't know. Overall I actually love Facebook, but there are things I hate about it, like being banned for innocuous comments or jokes by what I call their brain-dead algorithms. Their AI needs a lot of work. Especially if someone is commenting in a closed group among like minded people who are making similar comments.
The worst things about FB to me clearly was the Russian trolls and bots, and other nefarious actors. FB was way to slow in clamping down on that. But then I've been banned for innocuous statements. When replying to a thread from the Bill Maher fan page, Bill had done a segment about the people who scammed money from the government for pandemic subsidies to keep people from going broke. Yet many people scammed the government for money they didn't need and did not qualify for. I made the simple comment about them calling them "Dishonest Americans". OMG I got banned for 12 days just for those 2 words which were not only entirely appropriate but really putting the situation rather mildly. Another time I referred to a raucous trump boat rally as "Ugly Americans" - BAM you violated community standards and are banned for 6 days. Again a comment which used a literary reference to the book and movie which starred Marlon Brando of all things.
So I learned the algorithm is looking for any negative term followed directly by the word "American". To me that's a very lame and inexcusable implementation of technology. It's like they have someone in 8th grade writing the filter rules. That was my first ban, the other one came after and why it was longer. Then they threaten you will much longer bans. I use FB for a lot of positive interactions and to get banned from it in today's world would be akin to having your phone shut off back in the old days. It really is a disturbance to my ability to communicate and connect with people I know and love and care about!
After the Capitol riots, I stopped using Facebook almost completely. I only went to it once to say thank you to the people who wished me a happy birthday. I don't miss it at all.
Remember those old days when FB was about sharing old reflex photography with family and friends.
Yup, Facebook was once a lovely place. Now, it's rubbish.
I downloaded all my pics off FB and deleted my account about a month ago...my mental health has now never been better!
FB is a toxic quagmire!
I basically only use facebook to keep touch with close friends and family. I enjoy it. But know many who are on it way too much.
@@GastonsGuitarCovers Like anything else..moderation and proper use is key!
How does one go on some "social media" app n let it affect their mental health? Sounds pretty dumb to me, just stop going on it. Congratulations on being logical, way to "quit" FB. Had to be tough not logging in😂😂
@@joshlewis575 social media has actually been proven to be addictive, same as drugs and as for it affecting mental health, the constant bombardment of negativity that is all over FB can take its toll on one`s outlook on life..

I can honestly say I’ve never had a FB, Snapchat or Twitter account. Nor will I ever.
Deleting this app form my phone and my life was the best decision I've ever made two years in and I have not regretted it I prefer to concentrate on my immediate reality then the fake stereotypes that this app pushes!
My account got banned for 30 days for the most stupid thing, and I just decided to permanently close my account. I'm fb free for 2 months now.
its now over 4 months for me and the best decision I have made for a while. Facebook is toxic and most do not realise it. congrats on being away from the toxic crap for 2 months so far

Facebook is the most toxic place ever! I left 7 yrs back and shortly after I shared my experience with my sis she did the same. We both are much happier now. Got our privacy and normal lives back. No need to be in touch with unwanted people especially some relatives😂😂

The most ironic part is that they told us “put your phone down, live in the real world, don’t believe everything you see on the internet, don’t you know what you write on the internet is in ink and stays forever?” While they spread disinformation, are more addicted to their phones than younger generations, believe everything they read on the internet that agrees with their opinions, and are ruining their entire decades long careers by spreading hate online. The irony is undeniable 😂
I remember when it started and they only let college kids on. They had fliers at my college for it.

I've never had any social media accounts, I never got the appeal and was never interested in trying them out. I will sometimes make comments on here, but don't really consider it the same even though it's somewhat similar. I'm actually glad that I never got sucked into having a window into everyone's lives. I am fascinated hearing people's stories about how their lives changed when they got rid of them.
Gave up Facebook ten years ago. BEST decision ever to shut down entirely from that rancid cesspool.
I deleted my facebook about 2 months after I first created it. I remember thinking to myself “this seems like a waste of time”. That was over 10 years ago and not once have I ever felt like I was missing out on something.
Social media is the cigarettes of our generation in terms of how quickly and universally it is accepted/encouraged.
It’s a good way to share pics with elderly family members... that’s about it.
Pretty much all I use it for. To keep in touch with relatives in some way lol
All that comes up on my Facebook is pictures of my friends and family and memes. They told us a long time ago how these algorithms work. I don’t like anything, share anything political. If it comes up on my feed I click stop seeing this ad/article. The prompt asks you why, and I say I don’t like it or it’s not relevant to me. Doesn’t come back. Never had this problem. People are stupid victims of their own vanity and ego.
Also great way to turn elderly family members into domestic terrorists....
@@matthewsmith5374 politics are always personal, but that doesnt mean that its vanity driven. Some people are passionate about issues and naive to the consequences. Even if you do as you say, you can still have a conversation with your mom while your phone is in your pocket and an hour later that subject matter will be in your feed some how. In a google ad, in a RUclips video, etc... So at what point are people not to blame for.the pervasive nature of social media apps?
@@richardtaylor6341 I’ve clicked stop seeing this on everything for so long they just no longer appear now. Try it, it worked for me! You can’t get blood from a stone. Sell it to some other sucker I ain’t buying it. By vanity, I guess I mean people see stuff on their feed and they just blindly without thinking click, like, react, comment, SHARE...that’s the worst one, and don’t think about how it’s not actually about them, the feelings that the user is experiencing about the offending content, political or otherwise is manufactured to make you feel those very feelings. We’re being manipulated. It’s just advertising. All of it. I don’t want to be a victim of the algorithm.

Is it ironic to anyone else that this video is talking about censorship, and monopolies, while being played on RUclips?
RUclips gave itself a freedom of expression award and played that on RUclips.

We need to stop blaming the content and the users, the problem is Facebook itself.
