  • After years of delays and COVID-related disasters, the final film in the Daniel Craig era of Bond - NO TIME TO DIE - has finally hit theatres. Today, I look at how the movie masterfully uses emotional stakes in a franchise defining third-act finale.
    Very annoyed to have misspelt Cary Joji Fukunaga, hope the lord forgives me.

    I watched this movie in the theatres (with my dad) not too long ago. At the end, I was shocked to find myself actually tearing up and crying at the end.
    I watched all the Craig Bond movies for the first time (except for Solace. I had seen that one on TV a long time ago), and I enjoyed them a lot. Casino Royale had no right being as entertaining as it was. Skyfall was fantastic (I

    As a huge Bond fan, you hit the nail on the head on why the Craig ones (especially NTTD) work as "actual films" in a way none of the other ones (sans OHMSS) really have before - focus on character and feeling. Such a beautifully transcendent movie steeped in mythic ideas yet never losing the intimacy of the love story at the core of it. Good video!

    I'm glad you were finally able to see this. I loved this film so much. I think it's in my top 5 of the year. But it's really almost 3 hours long? I honestly couldn't even tell. I guess that's a testament to the pacing because it did not feel anywhere near that long to me.

    I really do not understand why so many these days have become obsessed with "Oh look, THAT IS SO ILLOGICAL, PLOT HOLES BABY". Like, nitpicking is fun, but I disagree when people are use it as damning criticism. Like it must be so hard to enjoy movies if you constantly focus on plot elements.
    Like, Skyfall has one of the most exciting, emotionally compelling set pieces in entire Bond franchise - Silva's escape and chase scene. It is utterly thrilling, Silva throws a freaking train at Bond and it is awesome, it has Judi Dench reciting freaking Ulysses that perfectly fits the themes of the film, it has incredible music accompanying it, it has hilarious interactions between Bond and Q, and it is shot incredibly. What some people focus on? "Oh man, Silva's escape is too dumb, like that plan makes no sense, movie sucks". Like come on guys, it is a James Bond movie, forget about the damn plot holes and enjoy the freaking ride.
    Movies are so much more than just plot. No Time To Die was beautiful movie for me that resonated with me on so many levels, yet I feel like so many didn't like it because of it's "illogical moments" (well, there were certainly others who disliked it for very messed up reasons of course). I am not saying everyone disliked it for these exact reasons, it is subjective of course and it won't resonate with everyone and you have right to feel whatever you want. I just see so many cite "oh damn nanobots bad, oh Bond survives too many explosions" as big criticisms that I will just never understand.

    I've gotta ask roby, if you saw the film yesterday, how did you make well produced video about it already? Where did you find all the clips, put together the nice text overlays, record the voice-over and everything inbetween, in roughly one day? Truly astounded at your pace and so curious, because I know that editing ain't easy. Great video.

    NTTD features a huge emotional twist at the end without any real build up to it because Bond doesn't face a lot of challenges beforehand. Any problems he faces have fast and convenient solutions. He engages in a lot of fighting but is able to defeat hostiles with ease because he is James Bond. But then all of a sudden he gets shot because he failed a spot check and this leads to him getting infected w/nanobots and therefore choosing to stay behind on the island to die. It's a Bond film until it decides not to be one. That's part of why so many people hate Bond dying because it doesn't feel earned or organic to the story. Also, that Q tells Bond that there's no way to cure him feels contrived because the technology is new and that they should've tried to devise a cure for him. The emotional stakes don't work for most fans as they're poorly handled and many audience members feel sad and empty when they leave the theatre because Bond's death feels pointless. Bond's death also renders every lesson he learned and loss he endured pointless because it seemed like they were setting up a happy ending to his arc. Spectre felt like the true end to Craig's era whereas NTTD is gratuitous and brings Bond back just to kill him off.

    I thought it was a pretty good movie. I don’t know, but I kind of prefer the campy takes on Bond. This was definitely closer to those than previous Craig entries, it definitely seemed more hopeful, but I long for the days when Bond, charmingly stupid one-liner in hand, faced off equally stupid but charming villains in sexy vacation spots and danger filled death lairs. Call me a fool but I wish for a simpler time.

      @@spaceodds1985 Yeah, I agree with the fact that it was a definite step away from the grit of the previous films. It wasn’t the worst film I have ever seen, but the pacing was a bit jarring, some of the scenes felt out of place on the story board if that makes sense, like they would have been great 15 minutes before or after.

    Honestly I’m the kind of guy who always rooted for the villain. Lmao. Esp in the Bond series, when the hero is always macho, no-mistake, Farts-perfume bs kinda guy. Esp the old ones which is pretty much unwatchable for me. But in NTTD his daughter revelation changes everything. It was the first time imo Bond looks vulnerable. He looks human. A man, and a father who try to protect his child. Finally, a Bond I can root for. Great ending.

    As a Bond fan, I wasn’t touched, nor was I moved, in fact I was really infuriated by this film. Why? Because for a character and plot driven Bond film, I found it to be lacking in that department. The plot is all over the place, it takes a good idea and is shafted for heightened emotional stakes that really did not work for me. After the first hour, the film becomes a Cluedo checklist of bumping off mainstay characters to satisfy the ending of an era. As for characters, who was the villain? And what was his plan? Who the hell was 007? I mean she was just there in the background looking pi**ed off. As for the ending, it was laughable. Craig sacrificing himself like that was not only questionable, but hilariously executed. Plus if he did survive, then the film’s title would be significant. IMO, NTTD, along with DAD, is the most disappointing Bond film to date. Not exactly the worst (DAF is just sick) but very near there.

  • @harrysecombegroupie
    @harrysecombegroupie 2 года назад +3

    Interestingly, I feel the opposite: the emotional stakes are where NTTD failed most for me. I so wanted to love this film and be moved by it, but it seemed to miss every emotional beat for me and I'm still trying to figure out why. I think because so much of it felt contrived, unconvincing and unearned. The relationship between Bond and Swann never felt real to me in the way that it did with Vesper. Madeline was poorly written, there was little chemistry, and I never understood why they liked each other. So without being able to be invested in their love story, the ending fell flat for me and left me feeling empty rather than moved.
    Another problem (which started in Skyfall) is the move away from realism towards the more fantastical, comic book world of the last three films. Trying to have psychologically realistic character moments in a world of monologuing cartoon villains, exploding watches, ridiculous plots and machine gun cars is jarring and it just didn't work for me. Which is a shame because I love Daniel Craig's version of Bond. I just don't like the direction his last three films went in.

    • @spaceodds1985
      @spaceodds1985 2 года назад +1

      Well said. I would go even further and say that NTTD is the most disappointing Bond film I’ve ever seen along with DAD. Lots of promise, but ultimately scrapped for one reason or another. Is it my worst Bond film? No. But its certainly close.

  • @shack7631
    @shack7631 2 года назад +3

    It was terrible. Way too long and overly sentimental. It’s James Bond. There is supposed to loads of woman and gadgets in the film. Like it or not that is the reason the series has lasted for so long. He is a character and a characture, neither of which are PC or woke. Daniel Craig made one good film in his time as Bond and that is Casino Royale earning him the title of the worst Bond ever.

      I disagree. Casino Royale is phenomenal. Skyfall too is great. QoS is an underwhelming , but watchable film, and Spectre is a contrived affair. NTTD however is a the biggest disappointment of the bunch, slow, dull, and contrived in development.
