Queens backing vocals are better than many bands lead vocals!

Queen don’t have or have ever had backing vocals. Their live performances were Roger, Brian, John and Freddie. Four incredibly talented musicians.
@@scorpioguyto2 backing vocals are any vocals that are not Lead vocals, just to clarify what backing vocals are! You need to think before you type, as a performing and recording musician that is what I meant!
@@scorpioguyto2 You are confusing backing vocals performed live by Brian, John, and Roger, which is what @Seanbarker4610 is referring to, with pre-recorded backing tracks. BTW, Queen did use some pre-recorded backing vocal tracks on certain songs in concert. A good example of which would have been the operatic part of Bohemian Rhaposdy and on some occasions, Bowie's part on Under Pressure.
@@scorpioguyto2 Except on the last two tours, their vocals were Roger, Brian, John, Freddie and _Spike._ Spike Edney was hired as a touring musician for the fact that John and Brian would often be well off their mics so they needed another musician to add to the harmonies... and the fact he played keyboards AND guitar definitely helped. (I am almost obsessive about giving credit to touring musicians whenever it's known.) This concert didn't have any backing musicians, though, just the four of them and the tape of Bohemian Rhapsody's operatic part, as I recall.
No Autotune, no ear monitor..... Pure talent
In those days big concerts used monitor speakers on stage aimed at the performers.

Roger Taylor's (Drummer) backing vocals are absolutely superb.
And he's doing those vocals while playing those muscular drum parts!
Roger could surely sing most of Queen's songs himself. They never went Genesis' way after what ever kind departure their lead singer took and installed their drummer as the new singer with some new live drummer. But his voice could have mastered most songs, too. Totally underrated.
Fun fact. The guitar player (Brian May) 2:57 earned a doctorate in Astrophysics. And he and his father built his first electric guitar, of which the one he is playing is a copy.
I'd love to see what you think of Queen's 20-minute set at Live Aid in 1985! It's a masterclass in stage performance from Freddie with even fewer effects than this concert, since it was part of a much larger festival with tons of other performances. Not only did Queen steal the show (from performers like Led Zeppelin, Elton John, U2, and David Bowie, among so many others), but it's consistently voted the best rock performance of all time. No lighting, no effects, tons of crew around to enable the live broadcast, and a crowd who'd bought their tickets before Queen had even been announced as being on the roster. Insane!
And a big thumbs up to Rami Malek for doing that performance justice. A well deserved Oscar.
And they ran over by only 10 seconds.
Pros in the arena, the fact that Queen still rehearsed for their set tells you they took nothing for granted. Again, so tight - even with the mini sound check leading into the first song. Transitions planned and timed. Perfectionists in the studio, they adapted their stage work to create a fresh approach to make the any concert an event.
I dont know what all the fuzz is about on the net. This was his NORMAL performance at all their 100-130 minute concerts ☺️☺️☺️
40 years later and still putting a glow on our faces. Freddy is the epitome of a confident singer. Never be a group like Queen again.

Yes, Freddie was the best frontman ever but Queen were the sum of 4 parts, all of them superb consummate musicians! Great reaction, more Queen pls, their 21 min set at Live Aid is widely regarded as the best live performance ever, you won’t be disappointed! Love from Australia 🇦🇺
Freddie was getting over something and not in top singing form for that.
Yea Freddy owned that show !!!Judas Priest tried!,The Clash tried and many other bands but only Freddy got the crowd following and arm waving all the way to the back of the million or so people!
Freddie was the heart and soul of Queen, when they lost him they lost a lot of the fun.
You could seriously watch Queen on mute and it would still be much more entertaining than most bands with sound (either old or modern).
If Freddy was the star then Roger was the secret weapon with his high pitched backing vocals
The whole band is JUST. SO. DARNED. EXCELLENT!
Besides the Iconic, Legendary, Inimitable Freddie (R.I.P., darling!)
We have :
- guitarist Dr. Sir Brian May (The Rockstar-Astrophysicist) playing his *homemade* Red Special that he *built* as a teenager with his dad, with innovative capabilities to it . Brian is consistently named as one of the greatest guitarists of his generation, and is a true Renaissance man with a genius IQ. And yes, he really does have a *real*, honestly earned PhD in Astrophysics - he is also an acknowledged expert in 3-D stereoscopic photography and imaging… he combines those two fields to offer his talents to collaborate with NASA and the European Space Agency ! Brian also has a warm and gentle, beautiful singing voice.
- bassist John Deacon, the quiet and somewhat “mysterious” one - calm, precise, *always* on point with perfectly chosen and rendered bass lines, the Financial Wizard of the band who kept a close eye on all things “business” to ensure they stayed in a good place money-wise. The Secret Weapon who wrote the fewest number of songs, but what he wrote was impactful for the band. When he really gets going, he turns into The Dancer while playing. 🙂 - one half of “The Sonic Volcano of Queen”, one of the most respected rhythm sections of the era. A First Class Honours degree in Electronic Engineering, Deacon also invented what is known as The Deacy Amp, a small amp that (they discovered) can make Brian’s Red Special imitate the sound of orchestral instruments. Brian still has the Deacy Amp, which never broke down or needed servicing - but he did have a reproduction one made (it took over ten years to make one that had the same qualities, and the original had to be disassembled to finally get it right!)
- drummer Roger Taylor - he of the golden hair and amazing high notes (which Freddie called “dog whistle notes”) … the other half of “The Sonic Volcano”, he and John Deacon were locked tight to provide the booming, thrumming basis for Freddie and Brian to fly from. He combines the unusual talents of being able to drum at a high level while also singing powerful, piercing backing vocals. Most any other band would be thrilled to have Roger as a Lead Vocalist - but Queen had an embarrassment-of-riches on that front with Freddie AND Brian AND Roger. So Roger also had a solo career and a band The Cross in which he sang lead and played…rhythm guitar !
Yep - 3 bandmates had really good singing voices (John didn’t sing except for rare backing vocals in live concerts, with his mic turned wayyyyy down.) AND all 4 of them were multi-instrumentalists.
I do like the people who talk of the whole band, not just the lead singers. They may go off and start a career alone, but they start together.
I agree with your point about the technologies used. What always impress me about vintage Queen performances is how great and full they sounded, being just a simple four piece band, albeit with three vocalists that complimented each other beautifully. I’m sure they had the best sound engineers money could buy with them on tour, but still: This is something exceptional and unique. Truly a master class for anyone who wants to perform music live. And yeah, it's not just all about Freddie, (although he was one of a kind), it's a band thing. It's that thing where the whole exceeds the sum of the parts.
Queen was the best band EVER, and Freddie was a magical being.
As many have said, if you want to see a master class in stage presence, you absolutely have to watch Queen's performance at Live Aid in 1985. Keep in mind that Live Aid was viewed by nearly 2 BILLION people world wide. And when Bod Geldof, the man who organized Live Aid, was asked who stole the show said, “Queen were absolutely the best band of the day,” the Live Aid organizer said. “They played the best, had the best sound, used their time to the full. They understood the idea exactly, that it was a global jukebox. They just went and smashed one hit after another. It was the perfect stage for Freddie: the whole world.” AN ABSOLUTE MUST SEE!!!
Brian, Roger and John always had Freddie's back.

Janet, your reaction was wonderful in that you immediately picked up on Freddie singing his truth; he was not looking for something easy, but something real. The more you delve into Queen, and the multi-layered music they produced, the more it will become very clear all members of Queen were in love with music and collaborated to give their all in every performance. They created so many vibrant and innovative songs; it's difficult to suggest a performance for you to review; however, you can be assured, Queen will embrace the moment. This song is great, this video is outstanding, but....sitting in the audience when this song came about during the show was outstanding.
I saw them on this tour, for the Game album, at Madison Square Garden in September of 1980.
Wasn't disappointed.
Another great one from this concert was a bew song off the Game called "Save Me".

Save Me has always been a personal favorite and that particular version/performance from Montreal in 1981 is phenomenal.
When Freddie is at the piano, he checks for the camera - but once he knows it's there, he releases the song. Not performing for the camera, but being true to the truth of the song. He knows if he trusts that, it will carry him. The crown was more restrained given the ground rules of the film project...but even so, he still reaches out to them for that extra bit of fuel he needs to reach. Queen is so tight at this performance. Clean (your word) is a good one. The performance of this song at Milton Keynes is the wild card - less perfect in the filming, but oh so driven. In theory you can try and teach performers stage presence, but when it is not from their core, it's just technique. But Freddie, he is the natural master class.

SHEESH FREDDIE MERCURIE'S VOICE IS SO SO SO POWERFUL
This footage is actually from the concert movie "We Will Rock You". Queen was that huge back then, that they toured not only the whole world, but had a concert recorded in HD (years before it became standard in Hollywood procudtions), newest mutli-channel sound recording (Dolby 5.1 and THX 7.2), so their fans could experience this footage on the big screen at the movie theatre. Be sure the movie theatre room turned into a wild live party with fans singing, clapping and dancing along the show! Really amazing experience and a ton of fun! Queen was always ahead of their time! It's amazing to have access to this high quality production 40 years (!) after its recording! *yeah

queen for me is the best band in the history of music.. just the fact they can sound this good live before the advent of autyo tune and computer enhancements is amazing.. and freddy had more energy than any other lead singer i have ever seen add also his stage presence and interactions with the audience.. what a magic cocktail...

Now, you mentioned drummers...i was blown away this week at Eric Clapton performing at LiveAid 85 with 2 drummers!!! 2 sets of drums. Phil Collins was one. I am embarrassed i didnt recognize the other drummrr. i have never seen something like that before. Impressive. The song they were performing was, "She's Waiting"....excellent song. This Montreal song is one of my all time favorites.❤ ❤❤

People take Brian May's sound for granted but it is so special.
Just the other day I listened to one of Meat Loaf's songs that is on the "Bat out of Hell III" album. It opens with a 3 triads on guitar. And you recognize immidiately that it is Brian playing. Just from the sound of his guitar. I looked it up in the sleeve notes, and sure, it was him.

Love your reaction here, and perhaps most importantly, your comments at the end about technology not overpowering or dominating the performer, but the performer being centre-stage: their passion, their skill, their emotion, their personality. So true, and one of the best summaries of the difference between music and performance today compared to 30 or 40 years ago and more.
Now that you’ve seen this, you HAVE to watch George Michael’s performance of this song at the Concert for Freddie at Wembley Stadium back in 1992. My biggest complaint is that I have a hard time convincing myself that George didn’t do a better job than Freddie. He does that good of a job.
Love it! You should really check out “Under Pressure” live at Wembley 1986 and “Another One Bites the Dust” live in Montreal 1981. Both are breathtakingly amazing!
My favorite Queen song & speculated to be Freddie’s fave as well. In an interview, Freddie admitted that Bohemian Rhapsody was a well-written song but felt that Somebody To Love was a better composed song!! May I recommend WHITE QUEEN live in Hammersmith .. YOU TAKE MY BREATH AWAY live at Hyde Park! Stunning vocals!! ❤❤
yes debra, he said himself it was a better song in terms of writing than bo rhap was, freddie rarely wrote simple stuff, his work was usually complex with key changes and tempo changes and incredibly hard vocals which many have tried to replicate and just can't! freddie really was a one off, nobody commanded a stage and a crowd like our fred 👑✊🇬🇧

Lol I definitely have a thing for this drummer! The incomparable Roger Taylor was/is a beast on drums and vocals. He was ranked 8th out of 100 best drummers. The whole band is phenomenal. Sir Brian May was ranked #1 as greatest guitar player still living. Rest In Paradise beautiful Freddie 🙏♥️👑🥁🎸🎤🎹

White Queen - Live at Hammersmith Odeon, 1975
You can see Freddie in his earlier incarnation here with long hair and proto-Goth black nails and eyeliner, along with skin tight white satin winged 'Mercury/ Messenger of the Gods' suit. His performance is riveting from beginning to end, in this vaguely medieval/fairy-tale ballad about unrequited love. Also features an extraordinary, ethereal 'duet' (or duel?) between Freddie on piano and Brian May (who wrote the song) on guitar.
Or, from 1976, You Take My Breath Away - Live at Hyde Park.
Same era, but Freddie solo on piano, raising a thin, elegant finger to shush a rowdy crowd at this free concert in the park, in the eerie green twilight. Once he had the audience's attention, you could have heard a pin drop. An intense tale of obsessive love. Raw and straightforward in presentation, but perfectly formed and oh, so powerful. I'd love to hear how you think he did it!

Hi there. Everyone has commented on this performance and says how great it is. And I won't argue that. It was filmed with IMAX cameras, hence the sharpness of the video.
I'm not suggesting you react to it, obviously you can if you want but personally I prefer the version recorded at Milton Keynes in 1982. It just seems better to me musically.

Impeccable of course! I would love to see you review "Radio Ga Ga" as performed at Live Aid in 1985 (I believe) and possilby "Under Pressure" peformed live at Wembley Stadium. Queen, perhaps the best live performing rock act ever!

Janet, hello from The Netherlands. I really like your spontaneous reactions. Ypure channel is quite a find. Have you ever considered a reaction to the incredible Lara Fabian? This lady (easily on a par with Celine, Mariah and Whitney) was Dimash's inspiration and she is beyond belief. The control, the emotion, her stage presence and the intense bond she had (and has) with her public. I'm very sure that when you start on the Lara Trail, there is simply no stopping! A veritable runaway train.

Frederick Boulsara was one of the best performers ever lived and a great singer/songwriter who unfortunately past away way before his time. I still mourn his early passing.
Every song was at least good, more are great, and some are epic.
i will remind you about some less known songs (not by fans, but those who don't know Queen well) for example: Fat bottomed girls or Spread your wings.

3:53 I don’t know if anybody has dropped this Easter egg below, but here is the point, Sir Dr. Brian May’s guitar string breaks and Freddie signals to John and Roger to now freestyle till Brian returns at 4:33. You can even see Freddie look over his shoulder to make sure Brian’s coming back. ❤

An interesting piece of trivia I find amazing is that as great of a singer as Freddy was, he was also a smoker.

Others noted in the comments, but the Queen segment of Live Aid 1985 is a must watch, even if you just do it for yourself.
Freddie never learned stage presence. He always had it. It was born in him. No one, and I mean no one can command a stage audience like. Freddie Mercury. Plus, the fact he was surrounded by talent. All four added something to the mix to make it that much better.
Brian Justin Crum does a great cover of this song from America's Got Talent. Worth checking out! Saw Brian sing this live, it was incredible.

Probably the only other singer with a comparable stage presence would be Robbie Williams... He was HUGE in Europe in the early 2000's and an absolute showman!
If you want to check out some performances of him, I'd recommend some songs from his concerts in Knebworth 2003:
"Let me entertain you", "Come undone", "Me and my monkey", "Feel" and "Angels"
Can I ask you why in heavens name you havent reacted to more Queen?? The legend, Freddie Mercury had an amazing voice, and a stage present that no other have done!! Please, do us all a favour. If you do not like "Save me", from Montreal live, or "Who wans to live forever" live at Wmbley, then you can say that you dont need to listen to them anymore. I am a woman in my 50's and I can tell you, I have seen and listened to all kind of music and singers. I have NEVER been so messmorized by anyone than Freddie!! You have to look at him, listen to his voice, and notice how accuratly they preform. Remember, its the 80's, its live, and no tampering or cheating with voices or instruments. The band together is brilliant. Did you btw know that he has sung with an operatic star? With grace and bravour? Agree with the ones saying please look at the Live aid from 1985 with them. Pure delight in 20 minutes. Hope you dont feel affended by my words 🤗
