Great video and review. Most reviewers brush off this game without even attempting to understand its depth. The trick to beating this game is to get the star and don't lose it! It's almost impossible to beat the boss without it (I've never done it). There are several routes to victory one being quite quick and easy: 1, 2, 3, 6, 8, 10, 4, 25, 41, 94, 97, 100. @HV MachineGun got me into thus game and I have actually pulled off a full 194 chest run (the last 6 chest being in 3 zones only accessible by cheating) which was probably the hardest gaming challenge I've ever done.
I'd heard this one had quite the reputation! something about those obscure 'just stumbled onto the solution randomly' type games I always found interesting. I think this one wound up on Switch Online at some point? might be fun to try to revisit it, haha.
This is my alltime favorite game, thank you for this video. Where did you find the level skip codes at 6:10? I've always dreamed of executing a 200 treasure playthrough, but 6 of the treasures are in levels that aren't accessible. I spent a few months writing a deep gamefaq that is about 80% complete but haven't touched it for about a year. Cheers
Sometimes I pull the cheat codes from Japanese game magazines, and there's a site that collected a lot of Famicom cheat codes (probably because they used them with the Dendy) that I reference at cah4e3.shedevr.org.ru/cheatsbase.php .

Imagine if this actually got a release here as Super Pitfall 2. The AVGN episode on this game would have been a classic!

This was just added to switch online
To think this almost became Super Pitfall 2.
And to think that it would have been a massive improvement if it were.
Post-Atari 80s Activision was a real mess. And apparently full of contempt for their possible customers!
@@EriChanTheRetroGamerNerdI don’t know about that

Rndstranger your footage in this episode is pretty funny.
Ok, that thing about the novelization of this game surprised me. Is it finished? Where can one find a way to read one a these??
I really wanted to like this game
But it just couldn't happen...
It never got a sequel because Nintendo knows that this game is better and much more influential than Super Mario Bros...
