8000, 9000, it don't matter. The scouters were never accurate to begin with.
They were accurate in Reading energy to gauge how much they weren't accurate in Reading skill or tactics or form
Kai was meant to follow the exact manga storyline

Although for awesomes, when Kai aired on TV Chris did a 9000 scream for all the meme-fans at the time.
It's not so much the number as it is the delivery. This delivery sucks. The way Vegeta says "It's over nine thousaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand!!!!!!!!!!" was the selling point of this immortal sound bite.
I will say, while i will ALWAYS prefer the TV version’s “over 9000” I like that they decided to be more accurate to the manga.

When dbz first came out in the pioneer dub it was 8000 but since funimation took over dubs its over 9000.

No, ocean was the one that did the 9000 read. And when funi took over it was still that, it wasn't till kai when Funimation corrected the line. Funimation's scripting follows more closely to the original manga. In the funi kai they even use the japanese names for some of the attacks.
Those little kids at 4Kids couldn't handle such a higpower level, so they lowered it...
Yeah, I prefer the Brain Drummond version, yes, over 8000 is the original line and the one more accurate to how strong Goku was, but the delivery is far more hilarious.
It wasn't changed... the original manga said 8000 but the anime creators made it 9000 but in DBZ Kai they changed it BACK again

@CartoonNothingTwo 4Kids didn't do this, in fact it's the same people that did the 9000. Same voice actor, same recording booth, same director, everything.

@elijahtakushi Before English dubs of DBZ cartoons, it was 8000 in the anime. So it was only the English dubs that have 9000.

For starters, it is in fact over 8000. The manga and Japanese dubs all use 8000. Also, and I'm just guessing here, I'd imagine most dubs used 8000 as well.
Second, it's not a disgrace. They're trying to keep the show alive, though I don't understand WHY they didn't just air the original again, Kai introduced Dragon Ball Z to a generation without Dragon Ball Z .
Lastly, maybe they COULDN'T use the original music due to legal issues or something.
In all seriousness, we fuck up their animes by toning down the violence, removing the concept of death and getting rid of guns, the very things american cartoons were built on. Changing a number does not make up for that.
9000 was wrong to begin with. In the original, Japanese version, it was 8000. Apparently, when translating, they decided that 9000 would sound better. And we know how that turned out. :P
@mothmangen3 If you read the manga you'd know that he actually says over 8000. When they made dragonball z kai they made it closer to the manga and fixed the error that was in the original.

Top comments are incorrect. If they did any research, they would learn it really is over 8000 NOT 9000. Learn japanese, and watch the japanese ORIGINAL, MEANING THE TRUE VERSION, WHICH THE ORIGINAL ENGLISH IS NOT! Japanese had it at 8000. :P

They originally aired it as over 8,000 because that matched the manga. I watched this episode again and they changed it to OVER 9000! with the same over-the-top inflection as before. Go figure.
@Nick40981, no it's not, it's 8000, 9000 was just a lie from the english dub, in the japanese version of Z, even in the comic book that this damn tv series is an adaptation of (both japanese and english) it was 8000.
@Unscmarlne Kai's voice acting is way better than the original dub, and your comment about the violence is ignorant. It's only toned down in the TV broadcast. The DVD version is completely uncut.

Who cares if it was 8000 in Japan...? I grew up with 9000. Arguing about errors in translation is pointless. It's just like arguing about who's translation of Final Fantasy 6 was better: Ted Woolsey's playful and less accurate version (Final Fantasy 3 on SNES) or the more accurate but less memorable version by the Final Fantasy Chronicles Team (PS)

bullshit. There's two types of dragonball z fans, ones who don't know anything about dragon ball, and ones who know plenty about it. There's a small minority in the middle. The ones who don't know anything are unfamiliar with the line, thus wouldn't care how it's done. The ones who do know it well (like me) wouldn't mind an over 9000, but also wouldn't mind the accurate over 8000.

who cares? anyone who cares about accuracy, for example. What that person is referring to are people who say shit like, "THAT'S WRONG! IT'S OVER 9000 NOT 8000!!!" when anyone with a brain stem can go on google and find out that the 9000 line was a translation error. Most people (like me) couldn't care about how anyone chooses to dub it, but to call this line wrong is sheer ignorant stupidity.
