Reate and We are one thing, but if many times cheaper Ganzos beat them at their own game, that is real failure. When I was new to knife hobby everyone suggested to buy Grip. The same lock but with good centering, no blade play, and g10 instead of that cheap feeling plastic handle, and for 5 times less money. Sure steel is worse, but office slaves don't cut that much.
Let me first say that no, this is absolutely not acceptable and I would be just as livid as the next guy in this case. But I have to step up for Benchmade here and say that the three knives I've bought so far (Grip, Mini Grip and 940-2) were absolutely perfect and have remained so throughout the years that I've owned them. Did not inspect them before buying either, I live in Europe so I received them straight from the US dealer that way. Too bad it just seems to be hit or miss for most with Benchmade, because I personally love their blades. Please do keep in mind as well that with every product you will generally hear more from those with a negative experience, because they feel the need and will take the time to voice their complaints. Whereas you wont hear from the thousands - if not millions - of customers that had no complaints whatsoever.
I’m glad you had a good experience and I would love to say that you’re right but ... I’ve had literally hundreds of benchmade knives show up over the years and the majority of them have all had the same issues
July 8, 2018 - I agree. I own 4 Benchmades, 940-2, Foray, Mini Presidio II, Grizzly Ridge, and have a custom Griptilian being built as I write this. The first four have been flawless and worked perfectly in every way for me, I am very confident my new Griptilian will be the same. Benchmade may have had some quality control issues in the past but, as far as I can see, they are absolutely excellent. There will be more BM knives in my future.
Wow!! Cmon Benchmade!! I’d be pissed. I haven’t ever had any problems with my Benchmade knives after about 6 of them but they do happen to have uneven bevels. More so than other companies but every production company has imperfect bevels no matter what, I’ve had them all.
I own 5 Ferrum Forge knives never had a uneven bevel ... and I’ve sharpened probably 30 reate knives and a bunch of shirogorov knives, none of those had uneven bevels so there are companies that get it right
Michael Emler - Crazy Sharp ha, guess I was making an over generalization. I haven’t had the knives you mentioned so you got me. I have primary experience with Benchmade, Spyderco, ZT, CRK,Hinderer, cold steel ect. By uneven bevels I guess I’m splitting hairs in some cases as I throw them on a clamped system and parts of the bevel may be a tad off lik the heal or tip, or one side may be a degree off from the other side. Some are waaay off and some may have a small part of the bevel off.
I've purchased 1/2dz benchmades in the last 12mos. 2/6 came out of the box right. 4/6 with various issues. Centering, misground, missing hardware, sloppy pivot (couldn't be adjusted out)...usually more than one.
Here is the deal with Benchmade knives...you must do your own QC inspection before you buy the knife. If you can't inspect the knife yourself then don't buy it! Plain and simple. I was inspeccting a benchmade bug out in store and it left the factory missing one of the pivot washers
I would never send my Benchmade in to the company for any sharpening ect. Send it to Wicked Edge in Santa Fe New Mexico. And why did you pay full MSRP?!🤦🏻♂️
I saved up for months to buy myself a 940. It was my first experience with that company. When I saw it it was so off center it was rubbing one of the scales and not sharp, at all. Sent it off and had the same expierence, sickening.
Michael Emler - Crazy Sharp, Thanks so much for replying, if i would have known about your channel earlier I would have sent it to ya, I ended up selling it to my buddy.
They did this with my 810. I had a broken spring came back with the same broken spring. I wish I could fix it myself but they don't trust me enough to give me a fucking spring to fix ot myself. But that being said it's my only benchmade with a problem. I don't own many but still it's fucked up
Jovonn Trujillo Really? I have a S90 manix LW and a 20CV griptillian. I thought M390 and 20CV outperformed S90. I wish I had two of those manix in S90 as I can't bring myself to use the only one. From now on I buy two sprint runs so I can use one and collect the other.
Here's an idea. Buy one at a store and look at it before you buy it. Not happy? Make them open all the ones in stock til you find one if you're that picky. I don't give a shit about centering... Does it open and close smooth? Yep. Perfect. I've only had an issue with my 535 being extremely "gritty" when I got it on the axis bar/blade. Benchmade sent me out new axis bar and everything plus spare parts and clips to replace it no questions asked. Fixed the problem. Gut hook issue, ya that's QC.. Like I said look at it in store first, knife could have been sent back to BM from the store for QC issue... Anytime I send something in for warranty I put a note in the box of what needs to be done for the tech in case they weren't clear when you make the initial call. I have almost no issues with any warranty claims this way.
I guess I've either been lucky or my standards are not on par with yours. In my opinion a little more secondary bevel on one side than the other is acceptable as long as the edge is straight and there is not an unintentional recurve. Can't tell from the video exactly what you are considering a misgrind. All of my Benchmade Knives are at least 10-15 years old but I used to send them in for life sharp every year or two and touch them up with a Sharpmaker.
My 940-1 was basically chisel ground and now has a slight recurve in it on top of the chisel grind. Maybe a little more bevel on one side verses the other is one thing, but lately all the benchmades I see are chisel ground and/or have a recurved bevel. Granted learning about grinding and hanging out with knife makers has made me a little more critical. Knives that are almost or over $200 shouldn't be this bad if cheaper knives are coming out with less issues though
crabborg If that is the case, then I've been lucky. Admittedly my sample size is small and it sounds like all of my Benchmades are older than these issues have been coming up regularly. I don't mean to be argumentative, it's just a hard thing for me to accept because Benchmade is a company that I have loved and recommended to people for years. I felt like I needed to comment because the comments Mike mockingly quoted were comments I have made. I totally bow to his expertise and I am sure you guys are right, but like I said it is a little hard to swallow. Still love my 940 though.
James G. I completely understand and was the same way. Hated to think the company I loved would be turning out crap. But every time I see a Benchmade and when I stop by the local shop to see what's new and check the benchmades there I keep getting disappointed. I wish the would get better so I could start buying from them again
Benchmade is oblivious to the competition. Sick of paying an extra $100 for a butterfly. I haven't has QC issue myself, but everyone else isn't lying. But hey let's raise the price.
Yes, Strider does sharpening right. The only down side is that some come with lock-rock. If you like 50+ degree inclusive edge bevels, then hinderer is your ticket.
neroknives I've had very great edges from spyderco on a USA produced knife. The one in particular was M-4 steel and it was finely finished and didn't appear as rough ground as others. I haven't owned a strider. ZT is as high as I've gone. I can't stand the SNG personally but, I'm sure I'll try a strider sooner than later.
Strider has consistently good edges out of the box--if you can find them. Hard to acquire new as of late. The SnG is an amazingly comfortable platform. Hinderer has improved recently with the Gen2 Eklipse and Firetac releases. These newer knives are sharper out of box (shaving sharp, but still 40-50*). Winkler fixed blades are probably the worst, though, in terms of sharpness out of the box. Too bad considering the quality of the knives Winkler makes. His fixed blades are amazingly capable knives. The problem is the people sharpening his Winkler II knives. They need some serious help. I'm afraid to buy a Benchmade--especially one as expensive as the 781 Anthem. People say blade centering is hit-n-miss. I can't stand an off center blade, especially at $425+ and on an integral frame. No way to adjust centering unless they use different thickness washers, etc. Spyderco is great in terms of sharpness out of box!
I can't imagine using that service. I live my 2 benchmade knifes, but I've never gotten a knife from any other company half as dull as every benchmade I've ever handled.
Wow friend, I just ordered the bench made 941 Osborne just like yours and I paid $221 delivered to my house and now you’re making me afraid to even open the mailbox, please tell me it’s worth at least $220
Also mine came perfect in every way, the grind was even and perfect ,hair popping sharp ,the center was right down the middle I just got very lucky with this one because I bought it sight unseen
Theyre slacking Major.... Every 535 at the store was off center. The one i got doesn't have an even bevel from one end to the other. I'll fix bevel my self not that i should have to $131.00 later... But I want them to center it. I've paid so much over time with their knives with issues. The new cpm 20cv full size grip. Old mini grip. 940 as well. Only one that was perfect was a full tang 162..
Jared Tyra I was a die hard fan but, in recent times have noticed QC going downhill. Bad edges, bad lockup, off center blades... I'm taking an almost $200 g-10 and 20CV griptillian. But, I had an orange one recently and it was excellent. My older 2010 benchmade knives are stellar. Now, I'd send people to spyderco as much as it pains me being a diehard benchmade fan. ZT is my number one company now.
Benchmade centering is pretty awful. In my experience (3 knives) it's washers that have a burr from the punching process. It's dumb that they don't check for this their but it's an easy enough fix that I didn't bother sending my latest one back. If something like the 781 is off center though you're pretty much fucked. The bad grind is pretty bad on a 940 which doesn't have much distance between spine and edge.
I've owned at least 20 Benchmades all bought in store.. I'm near 3 stores that are big BM dealers.. I would guess I can see problems with half their knives..Centering, bad edges, blade play.. The 940 has the worst problems...I've seen less on the 560, 551-1, 319 for example... The 940's all have bad edges and pivot screws that back out.. Shouldn't happen on $200 knives.. The pivot is so touchy, a hair turn right and it's tight, a hair left and it's sloppy loose..... I've seen defects in the G10 on 940-2's and 940--1702's (REI).. I could go on and on about problems... I did send in a 940 with oversharpened blade (borderline).. They replaced blade free and back in 2 weeks... But, I'm done buying BM's.....
Spartan Swerve so you’re going to watch one video out of my 600 and you’re going to call it a garage channel... and Here’s the thing I said nothing in this video that was not proven by the paperwork sent by Nikko and the proof when we open the boxes… If you’re such a bench made fanboy maybe you should start being upset that they let quality slip and that they don’t do what they say they’re going to do
Michael Emler - Crazy Sharp why be upset, when they continue to step up? I’m not a BM fanboy, I’m a knife enthusiast. You both sound like paranoid girls. Hans will go above and beyond to make shit right.
It’s easier than s30 and 20CV is the hardest of the 3 to reprofile... you can say “Facts!” All you want but ice sharpened over 100 Ferrum Forge knives in 20CV and at least that many in the other steels ... I’ll take my personal experience over anything else
Ok but facts are facts and the fact that ff knives are so thick is prolly why there the headrest to sharpen!! And simply looking at the make up of s90 and s30 anyone can tell that’s reprofiling s30 is not harder! And I’m sure if u ask the ff guys they would agree. And I’ve watched u for awhile now befor u had 400 subs! And I know u would have a different opinion if u used different abrasives!!!! S90 has higher hrc generally more carbides and many times more wear resistant than s30 even tho I personally love s30! My perfect knife steel! S90 is even more wear resistant than 20cv! Look up vendor specs!
Michael Emler - Crazy Sharp and if u sharpen a bench made with 20cv and a bench made with s90 the s90 is much more difficult and much more wear resistant!
"Is it supposed to have a recurve?" lol good video guys

Bought my bugout online and it's totally fine
I would never send my Benchmade in to the company for any sharpening ect. Send it to Wicked Edge in Santa Fe New Mexico. And why did you pay full MSRP?!🤦🏻♂️
I saved up for months to buy myself a 940. It was my first experience with that company. When I saw it it was so off center it was rubbing one of the scales and not sharp, at all. Sent it off and had the same expierence, sickening.
If you want you could send it to me and I can see what I can do... I can’t promise anything
I don't own many but still it's fucked up
I bet s90 will out perform the 20cv in every way that lil neck knife can handle!!!
Just got my first Benchmade, bugout. Both springs on axis lock broke. Had knife 3 weeks. Hope customer service can fix it.
I wish the would get better so I could start buying from them again
piranha is a better bang for your buck in some cases
If your such a stickler for quality why don't you clean up that sloppy shop.
David not my shop
Hahahah
That’s why I buy Spyderco
They are better but they have their own issues
Every Spyderco I've bought has been off center...
Seems about the same as the Strider lifetime warranty. HAHAHHAHA
Benchmade is oblivious to the competition. Sick of paying an extra $100 for a butterfly. I haven't has QC issue myself, but everyone else isn't lying. But hey let's raise the price.
MrGeerbear it’s not a butterfly, it’s a balisong.
The absolute sharpest knives I’ve ever had out of the box are by far my strider knives.
Oh my word!!! Staying away from them if this is what u get for that money!!!
Sounds like benchmade is to knives what high point is to pistols hahaha
Ive had two benchmade an they were great. I buy from a store not online. We need to stop buying that's the only way they will learn
I can't imagine using that service. I live my 2 benchmade knifes, but I've never gotten a knife from any other company half as dull as every benchmade I've ever handled.
Wow friend, I just ordered the bench made 941 Osborne just like yours and I paid $221 delivered to my house and now you’re making me afraid to even open the mailbox, please tell me it’s worth at least $220
jojojeep1 that’s a maybe
I did get the knife it’s a very beautiful Knife but in my opinion It’s $150-$180 knife
Also mine came perfect in every way, the grind was even and perfect ,hair popping sharp ,the center was right down the middle I just got very lucky with this one because I bought it sight unseen
Bingo... over charge ... under deliver
Dang I've never owned "higher end" gear. But I've heard so much crap and so much praise to benchmade. Everyone is different on this topic
And I challenge u mike to make to viper neck knives 1 s90 and 1 20cv I look up heat treat recipes and we have a test!
Shame I like their designs :(
They did not do anything because you clowns are just being picky and nothing was wrong with it.
Benchmade is expensive garbage
what a waste of shipping
Damn, the Chinese knock-offs of Benchmade knives are better finished than the originals...
2020/2021 top Chinese knife manufacturers build quality is better . Fact
I agree, they are not near what they use to be 20 years ago.
At least Benchmade is consistent. Consistently bad.I want the name of the quality control guy.
Typical Ham and Eggers. Benchmade has gone above and beyond. Sent me back a 940 with a better clip, without asking. Garbage channel
Michael Emler - Crazy Sharp *garbage...not garage
Go smoke another joint and chill
Well it s made in USA Hahahaha
What did u say? S90v easier to reprofile than s35 and 20cv no way! I think you are wrong because s90 is so much more wear resistant! Facts!
It’s easier than s30 and 20CV is the hardest of the 3 to reprofile... you can say “Facts!” All you want but ice sharpened over 100 Ferrum Forge knives in 20CV and at least that many in the other steels ... I’ll take my personal experience over anything else
Nope... he had it right
Ok but facts are facts and the fact that ff knives are so thick is prolly why there the headrest to sharpen!!
I’ve done both and still disagree
