Burns and Allen - Classic Scenes #9 - "Say Goodnight, Gracie": 8 Years in 8 Minutes

  • Here is a collection of many, many brief snippets from the closings of the Burns and Allen TV show. This is where George supposedly said "Say Goodnight, Gracie", and Gracie would answer "Goodnight, Gracie". Well, that never happened, and George is on record multiple times saying it never happened.
    But now we don't have to rely on just his memory, because I've personally gone through the closing of (virtually) every show and can confirm that it never happened. Full disclosure: I don't have all the closings of all the episodes-- I'm still missing a few shows, and some shows that i do have a copy of are missing the closings, but out of 291 total episodes, I've easily checked at least 250 closings.
    But there's another myth I'm out to debunk with this video, and I'll hand out a free Perfecto Royale cigar to the first person in the comments to figure out why. Hint: it has to do with George's part of the misquote exchange above.
    If you can't figure it out, check out the sequel video (it's short):
    • Burns and Allen - Clas...
    [NOTE: If you're wondering why this is appearing on the You Bet Your Life channel, it's due to account problems I've been having on the channel this really belongs on. Sorry for any confusion.]

    I thought the punchline was “Say goodnight, Gracie.” “Goodnight Gracie”. This didn’t happen.

    It. made me cry the first time 5 or 6 years ago when Gracie started just saying "Goodnight" now George doesn't even say "Say goodnight Gracie"! Double tap Mandella Efect! And all from this cheap cheese reality can go .... ....!

    I know George said,"Say goodnight Gracie." She would say,"Goodnight Gracie." I know it like I know my name. I loved watching them as a kid. Another Mandela effect.

      Kyle Grimes, classic false memory. George himself said (in his books) that the line was never used. “And, why not?” George asks rhetorically. “Because I never thought of it,” was his answer.

    Okay I was just watching someone saying that she no longer repeats goodnight Gracie.... In which is the joke. Is there really something to this Mandela effect? And Sally Field no longer says "you like me, you really like me" but rather "you like me, right now you like me" which of course is the opposite insinuation. Weird 😳

    With all these stacked up like this, it's really noticeable that there aren't a lot of variations in the laughing audience sounds. Probably Charles Douglass provided them with his Laff Box.

      d7sfblab Oh, yes, indeed. The filmed shows have a very, very, very distinctive and identifiable laugh track, used very, very, very badly, in my opinion. I've occasionally heard the same laugh track pop up on other shows from the 50s-- a couple of filmed Jack Benny shows, e.g.-- but very rarely. It's like this was the special Burns and Allen laugh track, or something. It really bugs me. Kills a lot of great jokes. And the shame of it is, they often had to resort to the laugh track because the real laughter they recorded during later playback for a live audience was too long and loud and drowned out dialogue. So some killer jokes, with huge audience laughs, had the real laughs replaced this awful, repetitive sound track. You're the first person I've ever seen who noticed this. It drives me crazy! :)

      +SantaClaus HawkeyeNJ I was actually the one who personally recorded that episode of A&E Biography in the late 1990s and posted my personal copy of it to RUclips (to a channel that was deleted earlier this year-- the copyright strike I got for that very video was one of the three strikes that led to the channel getting permanently deleted, which I will never completely get over). It's since been reposted by someone else, who's unfortunately also going to eventually get a copyright strike from A&E for it, too.
      That's great to hear about the interest people had in these shows when you were in the hospital!

    this compilation misses the final evolution of "say good night" finale. in the last seasons, George would ask:"Say good night, Gracie>" And she would respond: "Good night Gracie"!! It was the funniest and the most logical ending for the shows...

      @grouchomarx-youbetyourlife7476  8 лет назад +12

      You've missed the ENTIRE POINT of this video. "Goodnight, Gracie" was NEVER said. Period. And this includes clips from all eight seasons. I don't know why you think otherwise. Read the description, please.

      +Groucho Marx - No baby, i did not. you missed those episodes where she said (and frequently) "Good night Gracie" Missing those episodes are the cause for your "proof" that there were none. In other words, what you do not have or know, cannot and does not exist. well that is a good one.

    • @grouchomarx-youbetyourlife7476
      @grouchomarx-youbetyourlife7476  8 лет назад +11

      clarence spencer Look, clarence, I have no desire to argue with anyone about this. Believe whatever you want, it doesn't affect me. What bugged me is that your initial comment here indicated very clearly that you missed the entire point of this video.
      If you want to make an actual case for this, how about citing some evidence? How about finding me even one instance of this line ever happening since you're insisting it was *frequent*. How about explaining why George himself said over and over and over again that they never used the line? How about the fact that no one ever "quoted" this non existent line until after the show "Laugh In" made a running gag of "Say goodnight Dick/Goodnight Dick""?
      Until you can actually say something beyond "it happened because I remember seeing it", I have no desire to engage in a debate about this.

    I’ve never heard George in any episode including this video say
    “say goodnight Gracie”
    I’ve only heard him say, two phrases.
    “Gracie, say goodnight” and
    “Say goodnight”

  • @vintage.doll.1926

    I know! Rumor has it Gracie would respond "Goodnight, Gracie" to George's direction to say "goodnight." Supposedly, he was quoted decades later, after Gracie's death, to saw that he never though of that gag, that he realized it after hearing the myth was circulating. Personally, I don't consider the idea of the joke being something that would have been in Gracie's "illogical logic" style of thinking. She is too intelligent to bid herself "goodnight," yet so much of a lady that she would briefly acknowledge an audience's presence to say "hello" (for those how listen to the pre-domestic radio show episodes of The Burns and Allen Show, you can supply the voice of Gracie saying "hello" in her flirtatious, single-gal way that won't convey itself through my typing fingers) and "goodbye." A lady doesn't simply walk away without excusing herself or something, and a lady never goes anywhere without her purse, according to Gracie, in George's 1980s biography of his love, entitled "Gracie: A Love Story" which is read/monologued by George somewhere here on RUclips.

      That video is actually on another one of my RUclips channels. . . ) Here I think George was just misspeaking because he was talking fast. But there was one time-- one time-- that George outright said in an interview that the answer "Goodnight, Gracie" was used, and as you pointed out about the Alan King interview, he was well into his 90s at the time he said it. Prior to his very advanced old age, George had repeatedly said in interviews and his own writings that the line "Goodnight, Gracie" was never used, and this is borne out by my having checked almost every single closing ever done on TV. (The radio closings didn't follow the "Say Goodnight, Gracie" pattern in any way).

    • @samking73
      @samking73 9 лет назад +1

      Groucho Marx - You Bet Your Life Thanks for the reply! You always hear that it was a closing they used but I too have watched many episodes of Burns and Allen and listened to many OTR episodes but had never heard them use the line. I think in that clip I pointed out, you were right, he was just finishing up the story quickly and it just came out that way.

      Groucho Marx - You Bet Your Life If it weren't for good old shows like Burns and Allen, Jack Benny, McHale's Navy, Gunsmoke, Rawhide and other great classics, I would probably never turn my TV on. Most everything modern is krapola. Documentaries are really about the only thing modern that I can stomach.

      Groucho Marx - You Bet Your Life Is the answer to your original quiz question that when George _does_ say Gracie's name, he always says, "Gracie, say goodnight" and _never_ says, "Say goodnight, Gracie?" Btw, I am totally awestruck by this compilation! How many clips are in it? I can't even imagine how many hours it must have taken you to put this together -- especially knowing what a perfectionist you are!
