Cool! I came looking for anything on these vises, because I have had one for somewhere around 40 years. Have not disassembled it like you do in this video, but I may. Making it look really nice seems like a great idea. Just one problem: It is missing the "horseshoe" which is screwed to the moveable jaw, and pulls open the vise. You set it down at 4:33 I have a makeshift device which works, and am going to construct a better one. But I thought I should ask, Is there anywhere I might be able to obtain an original?
Search the internet, I have heard there is someone reproducing them. They are somewhat complex so finding one would be ideal. Also EBay is always a good source for vise parts.
Looks Great! I have a chas parker 974A, there are some differences, but I can't seem to find anything on the 974A, have you ever heard of this variation?
I just picked up a Parker 384 1/2, the big brother to my grandpas 383 1/2 that I restored, while cleaning the 384 1/2 up which it had a boat load of nasty thin brown grease in the swivel bottom I found that the swivel base is actually off of a 974, but it matches up very well with the 384 1/2, it does not have the wrench though which is a shame but i gotta say for 100 bucks I couldnt have asked for a better very rare swivel base and jaw vise, i have not got around to taking out the pin for the swivel jaw but if it was anything like my 383 1/2, it'll be a nightmare
Do you remember the socket size you used to remove the bottom nut? I also have this vise that I am trying to clean but dont have a socket big enough to loosen the nut. And dont wanna buy the wrong size. Thanks in advance.
No I don't recall but you should be able to use a crescent wrench to loosen it. You could also use a tape measure and measure it prior to buying the socket.
those are nice. i just bought a trojan 708. huge 6 in jaw x12in, 130lbs. i know parker made trojan in there econo line. is there a way to tell the age? i plan on restoring and painting it. and definitely using it. cause thats why it was made, hard use.
@@shopdoc i like big stuff. but yeah its really big. so large i'm building a new workshop table with 4x6 posts for legs and solid 6x top. should be a nice home for the giant trojan.
So I also have a 974 but I'm missing the part that hold the main screw. I see you removed yours with one screw with a large blade driver. What is that part called? Do you have a spare? where can I find one? I can probably fab one up but would rather have an original . Thanks
I don’t think there is anyone making those so you’d need to find a parts vise. I call it a lead screw retainer but that’s not the official name I am sure. Good luck Sir.
thumbs up! nice Job!
“Yet another vise” lol. Yeah I know that feeling
Yep I have an addiction! I just picked up 4 more vises (video’s coming) in the last month. Haha! This hobby is definitely my vice.
Oh thank God. A primer and then paint guy. Actually I'm a double primer guy grey then red or red then gray, that way I know I got it all covered.
HahA! Well not always but I do certainly prefer it.
Wow. Nice job. Just had a look to see if I could find one in the UK. £800; I'll keep looking and hopefully find one a lot cheaper.
Thanks so much! I really appreciate the encouragement! Good luck in your search. Check out my channel for other vise resto's as well.
Спасибо за проделанную работу !

No but I am sure there are plenty of variations that I'm unaware of. Love these old vises though....so well built!
Nice video, wish I could find one of those.
What do you put on the bare metal parts to prevent rust? I generally use Boiled Linseed oil myself. Just curious. Great video.
Yep boiled linseed oil (BLO) as well. I will occasionally cold blue some bare metal and then apply the BLO. Thanks for the kind words!

Look for the wrench on E-bay, they will sell them from time to time. I think you need a "#2" wrench.

Nice job. Did you replace the spring in the handle holder? My 473 1/2 model has a dovetailed wedge instead of a bent pin to hold Lead Screw nut.
honestly I cannot recall?? I have in some and I have also had to refab the brass pin in the handle.

Nothing about a Charles Parker is economy. They were all very well made. That one you have is huge!!

@@hk93shooter That will be a great table!
You may be able to help even though you traded this vise. I need to make a retention collar and was hoping you could help with some dimensioning on it
Are you talking about what holds the lead screw in the vise when you open the jaws? I have a few other Parkers so I may be able to help. Let me know.
@@shopdoc yes.
@@syost88 Ok. I am in New Jersey visiting family. I'll get you some dimensions when I get home. Should be able to by Saturday.
My e-mail is ccmhurricane@gmail.com Shoot me an e-mail and I'll provide some dimensions.
