- It's like Industrial Art to me!!
This Charles Parker vise is a model 953-1/2, it weighs about 36 pounds and has 3-1/2” jaws. I don’t know the exact age, but I’m thinking post WW2 and no newer than the 60’s. I’ve seen similar models in the catalog pages from the 50’s. This is a fixed base model that fits over the edge of a workbench for added stability and access to the clamping area. The tall curved jaw design also allows access to the work piece superior to some other brands. Another great feature of this vise is the set screw for the handle as explained in the video. I did not want to do an over-the-top restoration of this vise, and simple cleanup and a coat of flat black paint. I highlighted the lettering in white to give it some pizzazz! I hope you enjoy the video.

Don't know how I missed this one because you know how much I love vices. That turned out fantastic.
For sure Ryan, you are afflicted with the same vice for vises! I have 2 more coming out soon, done just getting them in the queue. Thanks for watching
@@westhighlandsshop I have so many vices and other projects that I can't find time to get to. It's frustrating.
I can't wait to see you other vises projects.
You did a good job on the lettering, considering they were all over the place. Looks great 👍😉
Thanks! This is a fairly new paint for me called One Shot, it's sign/lettering or pinstriping paint. I think I'm going to like using it.
Nice job David, I like it when you can hi light the lettering. And you are off to a good 2024 start.
Thanks Dale. Hopefully going to be a good year!
Beautiful finish on the vise. The black color is perfect. I have a smaller Parker I also did in black.
Thanks John. My first Parker and I really like this vise. I almost made it a daily user, but it came out so nice I just couldn't do it! Thanks for watching.
I’ve restored a couple of Record woodworking vices, and instead of painting the cast letters and numbers in a contrasting colour, I lightly sanded off the paint, to make it look like natural wear.
Cool idea, may have to try that on one of my upcoming vise clean-ups! Thanks for watching.
Looks great David. I like the flat black paint with white lettering. Bill.
Appreciate it Bill, I like the look as well.
That came out nice. You’ve got more patience than I do to paint that lettering. Looks good!
Thanks Charlie!
That's a beauty! I'll take a fixed base over a swivel any day of the week. That set screw was interesting and love the paint job! Very enjoyable video as always. Take care and Happy New Year. Here's to an awesome 2024🍻
Thanks brother! I thought the handle setscrew was such a cool feature.
Great job!
Thanks Magdad!
Nice work Mr. David! Its a good looking vise... im not sold on the set screw, but if needed its there. Good stuff sir!
Thanks Vic. I thought it was a pretty cool idea. I doubt I would ever use it but neat.
So great!!
Thanks. Glad you enjoyed the video.
This looks cool. Amazing video 😍😍
Thank you very much!
Great job sir!!!
Thank you Danny!
I don't think I have enough years left in me that I need to worry about grease getting hard.
LOL. Me either! Just thinking about the next guy. Thanks for watching.
I love the video...if you do more could you please talk about or add the total amount of time you spend on the restoration? I've literally collected 100+ old vices over the years with the intention of restoring them but they don't really seem to sell well in my area considering the time and money it would take to restore one vs. what I could actually sell it for around here. I just hate to take them all in for scrap value because it seem like such a waste of history.
Hey, thanks for the view and comment. I don't usually track my time on projects. I don't typically clean these up to re-sale, but to keep in my collection. I know I spend a lot of time on these. I usually have 3 or 4 projects going at the same time and they stretch out over several weeks, too much trouble to track the time sheets. On work that I do for income, I obviously do track that, just not on the items in my collection. Sorry I couldn't give you a better answer.
Happy New Year!
Thank you and same!
Very nice. Do you have plans on where you are going to mount it? tHanks for the video
This one is going up in my tool display room. I doubt I'll ever use this one, but it will be in great shape for the next owner one day.
This is amazing, it doesn’t even look like the same vise.
How old is that thing?
Yeah, Weabrnc is right...looks like a completely different vise
Thanks!
Thanks Web. Not sure of the age but I'm thinking somewhere in the 1940's to 1960's?
