  • Gary and Bennett talk about the ACC's desire to expand the conference, despite their pickiness as to which schools to extend an invite. They also discuss whether schools like SMU and Memphis should take the opportunity, even if that means the school will not earn any revenue.

    So long as university presidents are still in charge of conference affiliation, Memphis will have a tough time finding universities who want to associate with them.

    Keep in mind that the Dallas population has a lot of other choices for what to do, and sitting in the sun in 105 degree heat isn't attractive if your team sucks and/or plays teams no one cares about (our entire conference basically). Cowboys and Mavericks don't draw either when they're at the bottom of the standings. They sell out every game when they do. SMU sells out games against teams people care about... they just don't play any traditional rivals anymore. As for Memphis, they couldn't offer the same deal SMU did, and their academic profile doesn't fit the ACC. They'll have to kill it in football to overcome that.

    • @michaelwall3393

      SMU doesn’t fit Academia profile of ACC definitely. Memphis is at least R1 with room to develop and improve and excel. Also Memphis has been way more successful in football and men’s and women’s basketball than SMU could ever dream of. SMU doesn’t belong in most conferences because do not have all the sports. Also this lazy ass excuse about heat and competition ate just that; lazy pitiful. Mark my words; if SMU gets in the ACC or the AAC regains autonomy status by adding all four PAC schools and in 2025 add some MWC schools, SMU will still stink in multiple sports and still stuck at R2 academics.

    SMU will make more money in the ACC with non media revenue shares even with no TV money. It makes dollars and sense.

    Memphis wont get into the ACC unless the league moves to 24 /30 teams. The tigers academic woes put them behind the likes of UConn, USF, Tulane, Air Force, Navy, Army, Buffalo, Oregon State and Temple at the very least. Which is a real shame because of their natural geographic fit, fanbase and basketball tradition.

    • @beboutbidness9616
      @beboutbidness9616 9 месяцев назад +3

      This has nothing to do with academics. The ACC wants the Dallas media market.

      @@beboutbidness9616 , President George Bush got involved concerning SMU & they came out with an offer to not take any conference payout for 5-7 years. They simple want to be in a Power-4 conference. I’m sure the Dallas market helps & the ACC already has plenty of Basketball schools. Do any of those schools bring $38 million into the ACC? If not then the ACC cannot afford a school that does not bring in cash.

    • @robertsanders6858
      @robertsanders6858 9 месяцев назад

      @beboutbidness9616 SMU is a slam dunk due to them buying their way in, PLUS...the academics do come into play here. Remember that the university presidents do the voting. Things like on-field performance, location and the stuff that really should matter just don’t. It’s about whats important to those in the ivory towers...which is money and the ability to claim academic integrity. Schools like USF, Tulane, Buffalo and Rice are all AAU. Schools like UConn, Air Force, Navy, Army and SMU aren’t AAU but are all very strong academically. Oregon State and Temple are good academic schools. Memphis is behind all of those in the eyes of those presidents right now. That’s not my opinion, those are just 100% the facts. Personally, I would love the ACC to come to an agreement to let FSU, Clemson and UNC bolt and then bring in UConn, Memphis, South Florida and Oregon State. That’d be a 20-team coast to coast league that, with some real thought and alterations to scheduling would be manageable and really thrive.

      Not sure where all this “academically deficient” talk comes from in regard to Memphis. Memphis is a Tier One Research institution along with many highly rated departments including an excellent law school. How many fans at the FSU vs. LSU game last weekend bought tickets because of their academics, anyway? Let’s get real about it.

  • @MemphisTiger

    Unfortunately, I agree with Gary’s take on SMU. Yes, they don’t have a big fan base but pretty much any school from the group of five gets plopped down suddenly in a so-called power five conference, the ticket sales will go through the roof. And for the record a lot of those ticket sales will not be for fans of the home team either.
    That being said, it is really sad that a school can buy its way like this. 99% of the schools in this country including those in the current power five couldn’t do what SMU was doing monetarily.
    Based on football and basketball program success in recent history, Memphis is definitely far more deserving. Unfortunately, at least, in the case of Memphis, that doesn’t matter despite the fact that was an overriding criteria in pretty much every previous conference realignment (on-field success). As a Memphis fan, it is definitely infuriating, because the goalposts keep being extended for us in a way it’s not for others.

    The University of Memphis is located in a beautiful, residential area of East Memphis. Its a very nice campus which was designated Safest Large College Campis in Tennessee by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation poll in 2022. I hope this dispels the “ghetto” nonsense…

    Memphis has had a better average attendance than every team not named UCF or Cincinnati in the American. It also had better attendance than Duke who saw a 50 percent increase. It also brings you not only decent football, but a strong basketball and occasionally good track and baseball. Not holding my breath that they will be invited. I think Memphis has been left out long enough to show conferences don't want them. They are better figuring out what the best of the rest is and making that great. That may be something involving the remaining Pac 2, most of the American, markets like San Diego State and I really think they need Stm Louis back and something in the DC market. The idea of the Big East coming back together with the American and some of the MWC may get the best of the rest more money.

    SMU has to go all in. Their big boosters just spent $100 million to build in the north end zone and complex. If they don't get in a bigger league they won't draw flies for attendance. Which would be wasted money. Memphis pretty much owns SMU in both sports and attendance for both sports. It's a joke. But money talks.

    The issue is not "all about the money." Its about money AND ACADEMIC reputation. Memphis has not invested in the academic aspect of its school like it needed. SMU has built its academic reputation to the degree that it broadly fits academically. They can "buy" their way in because they have the academic cache.

    • @MemphisTiger
      @MemphisTiger 9 месяцев назад

      You do realize that Memphis is an R1 institution, right? Do you know who isn’t yet? SMU. I’m not trying to argue that Memphis is academically more prestigious overall, because it’s not, but it’s absurd to say they don’t invest in academics. Keep in mind Memphis is a public school. SMU is a private school. That does make a difference as well because SMU can be far more selective in who they accept as students.

    They can change name to all coast conference. I’ve not heard that $30 million scenery. I’ve heard Florida State, Clemson, and UNC will receive more than the other 11 current members. SMU was allowed to join the ACC after President George Bush got involved, Condoleeza Rice was involved with Cal & Stanford. UNC flipped leaving FSU, Clemson, and NC State isolated. Notre Dame has full member voting rights, and cooked up this dish. I will wait to read the contract. 🏈
