Although Clyde Beaver, and a few others, (Ike Inman)have often been credited for writing this song, he/they did not. Clyde was however the first one to record and release it, in 1960. The song was actually written in the 50's, by Jack Kay, my father. I have the original notebook paper he wrote it on.....60 plus years later it's in sad shape, but still legible. Daddy played the fiddle with Webb Pierce and The Wondering Boys. The story my mother told us was that Daddy got toasted one night and sold the song to Webb for $100. Every time I hear Mo Bandy sing it, I wanta kick my Dad's butt, which would be a challenge as he died in 1972. God bless him. :-)
