    Two things: 1) Camper really is adorable! and 2) I can't imagine you moving back into Hotel Prius after getting used to a much larger rig. Perhaps that will be addressed with your "surprise" announcement next week. Thanks for the review of your time in the 4WD truck.

    Remember to store your Key Fob in a metal or proprietary container when in the back. On some vehicles if the fob is in the back or nearby, the doors even if locked can be opened. Try it. Polish up those headlight lenses with Vinegar and Baking Soad or mild rubbing compound. 15 minutes, Done. Could you purchase it?

    Alaskan camper is a solid two wall similar rig that raises and lowers. It’s been around about 50 years in many different configurations. I owned a new 8’ cabover model from 1975-83. It’s the best rig I’ve owned. Super insulation and I lived in it in Iowa in the winter for 6 months.
    Going forward it’s going to be a hybrid or EV travel rig.

    I love that this camper gives you the option of going to all those "wild camping" spots that a more traditional camper would not allow. One can really enjoy nature with this vehicle. It's great that you were able to use this truck and camper to demonstate to others how it can be used.

    Thanks for the honest review. Living full time in any RV creates a long list of pros and cons. For off-roading or overlanding smaller and lighter is better, but then it will lack storage. My first RV was a traditional 8' camper on a 1969 2WD F250 Camper special. The 8' bed allowed more storage. The other advantage was having Camper Jacks, so when we arrived at a campground I could have it off the truck in about 10 minutes. That being said it would not be my first choice for full time living. The really good news is that the choice of RVs, Roof Top Tents, etc. for off-road adventure is huge. Just a matter of determining where you want to camp and how much money you want to spend. A word of caution about 4WD adventure. When you believe it can go anywhere, you soon learn that it can't. Know the limitations of your rig and use the off-road apps (I recommend onX Offroad) to determine if you can make it to where you want to go.

    Having owned 5 trucks over my life (two Tacomas and 3 F150's), I find the Tacoma excels at anything off road, just a beast. However you pay a huge price in gas mileage and drivability, My recommendation is if you do more driving than off roading, stick to a full size truck, and if you don't care about highway driving and MPGs go with the Tacoma. You actually will do much better with MPGs when heavy with a full size and have a big enough gas tank to go 300 miles between fill ups. My weighted down Tacomas required fill ups sub 200 miles which is a real drag. The reason this matters, is with a full size truck you can go larger with the camper, more available and most often less money to purchase.

    Thank you for the great review of this rig! I agree as a solo camper, it's important to be able to move into the driver's seat & go without stepping outside. One question I have about Camper's front seat, is airbag safety. I always preferred my dogs in the backseat, or with the airbag turned off, thinking like kids, they weren't allowed in the front until they were a certain size. Not sure if this is an issue, just something I think about. Looking forward to seeing what you two do next! Thank you for all you do! ❤️

    Storage is always a issue. I like the idea of a well insulated minimalist cargo trailer. I have spent the summers working in southern Arizona with a Honda EU2000 generator and a 5000BYTU window air conditioner in a Ford E-150 van. However you have to want to insulate and have loose insulation panels . One could better insulate the truck pop up camper but you have to want to do it and put up with some awkward insulation panels or insulation blankets for the too hot and too cold places.

    Ford E-transit with the Trail package. That's what you need. You can customize it how you want. It would make your jackeries redundant and solve the air conditioning dilemma as you can run the AC all day long. And you can probably park overnight at a charging station and have a legitimate reason to be there and sleep in it since sleeping in teslas while they charge is a common thing.

    I have a full size F250 dsl. with a full size Grandby FWC. i prefer my set up, more power, i can drive 80 if i wanted uphill. 70 no problem, where i feel safe. plus i have way more room. the tacoma is gutless. the benefit to the tacoma is it can go on more narrow roads than i can.

    I loved how you did the pros and cons of this truck, for me there was too many cons. I definitely would not want to put my things in the back seat of my truck, I definitely would either get a larger van like some of your friends have or because your prius is so good on gas I would keep the prius. I am really looking forward to your next video to see what vehicle you are going with. You and Camper stay safe.

    I hope the surprise is a new camper truck of your own! You can Camper really seem to enjoy the space it offers beyond the Prius. Not that I want to see the Prius go, but I think you guys hit your stride in the truck camper. Maybe a rigid one so it's more four seasons. Argh I'll just have to wait and see!

    Yeahhh, this is awesome but one thing you didn’t mention was the cost!? How much is this and does it save you in the long run? Gas cost, etc. Otherwise is a great rig. Yes, Nikki, that was one big spider! Scary,,, don’t know enough about them to say what it was, but glad you and camper didn’t meet him by accident! See ya in the next one. Liked that this video was a bit longer, and very informative!❤️

    I love the truck and pop-up camper though there are a couple of things that wouldn't work for me. 1) No built-in AC in the pop-up camper, and 2) Stepping outside the camper to walk around to the truck cab to drive away which is a safety issue to me. It is sharp looking and functional other that that. Thanks for the tour.

    I've a 2017 FWC Fleet shell on my 2017 Tacoma, had MLO give me a bunch of upgrades to the truck and camper and I can go anywhere my truck can fit. I've not spent more than a week or 2 at a time camping but I LOVE it.
    While it's a SHELL rather than a camper, it does has some things that make it more aggravating. No water and no toilet. Just a 2 burner stove, heater, 160W solar with doubled up batteries, and roll-over couch.
    If/when I get the money and don't decide to go to a full-size truck (I love my tacoma a lot) I'm absolutely going to upgrade to the flatbed and the flatbed model of camper. Having those extra luxuries would really make the difference AND it have some more solar and extra battery. In my current set-up (similar batteries to the video) and 160W panel, I can keep my phone, tablet, JBL bluetooth speaker, and back-up batteries for the phone completely charged and I've had to run the heater for 4 days straight. I've only dropped below 12.5V once. If I were going to need a laptop or a refrigerator (instead of a cooler) I'd absolutely need the extra solar power and batteries.

    I can't wait to see what your replacement for the prius will be!! IMO it's still a toss up between a Toyota Sienna Hybrid AWD w/a small lift, and a sprinter-type van. The sprinter-type van would be infinitely easier to move around in, and there's plenty of space for you and Camper, but the Sienna is more stealth- basically a bigger prius... Gah! I'm excited to see which way you go!

    Hi Nikki. I love your pop up 4 wheel camper, I think it is superb. Thank you for explaining all the in and outs, pros and cons of nomad life. I lived for some time in a mobile home in Florida and I had problems with indoor pollution at home, an air filter should be a great deal of help on that regard in your 4 wheel. I might be moving soon to Boise ID. I hope we can meet some day in the future. enjoy your winter, you beautiful nomad girl, rgs ❤

    Nikki,
    The other day in a parking lot I saw a light green Prius just like yours and realized just how tiny that car is. What gets me is that all the stuff you had in your Prius you transferred to this truck it is STILL doesn't have enough room for everything you have. Did you accumulate more stuff with the truck? And where did you hide all the stuff in your Prius?

    • @EfficientRVer
      @EfficientRVer Год назад +1

      A Prius is far from tiny. Technically, it is too long to be allowed in some National Park campsites (for example 14ft limit at many Grand Teton NP sites, my Prius Prime is 15ft 3 inches long, and I've carried 10 foot lumber in it with the hatch closed). Except for the low roof, Prius has almost the same space as most SUVs.
      The Prius was clearly better suited to Nikki's needs (including personal safety, 24/7 climate control, workload, stealth, and fuel efficiency) than this truck popup camper, but of course she can't directly say that after they were so kind to let her borrow one for so long..

    Hi Nikki, great video as always; I enjoy watching you and Camper on your adventures. From my perspective it looks like you need something with more storage, perhaps the ability to go in and out without having to go outside the rig. Be able to drive away safely. Also believe air conditioning and heating is a definitely possibility with a hard sided truck camper. and the difference in mileage is not that great between a hard side and a pop up. (Stronger solar panels and better batteries, I would also recommend) Lastly an indoor shower especially for cold weather. You are very brave, and tougher than the average person for sure. Best of luck to you and Camper!

  • @chrisbrown1462
    @chrisbrown1462 Год назад

    So as a 4 Wheel camper owner a few thoughts... batteries...junk them and go to Lithium. First thing I did and now it's 7 years later and I am still on the same batteries. Also added a second alternator to my rig just for the camper, but that is not required (also 400 watts of solar). Have used the dinette once. Always on the bench. For storage I put a large plastic bin on one side of the dinette bench and put all the bulky stuff in there - makes life much easier - you just loose a window. I have the cassette toilet, which is MUCH better then the bag option - however takes up space. Also have the indoor shower - which I have never used (drain is under dinettee).
    The condensation issue is easy to solve (at least for me) - crack one of the roof vents open a inch or so and then open one of the doors to the tiedowns. With practice you can get enough airflow to carry the condensation away while still staying warm.
    The lack of A/C is a serious issue. I will probably spring for an ecoflow unit at some point. For now I just pay real close attention to the weather.
    Stealth camping is a no go - everybody wants to ask questions about the rig and look inside. Mine is a bit different since it is one of the very few fiberglass units they made so even other FWC folks want to find out what the heck is going on with my rig.... So tired of answering questions... excited to see what is next.... (my money is on a Sportsmoblie)
