I order all my clear orchid pots online (amazon). They have all sizes. I use a nail drill to add extra holes. So In love with my Phals! Great video. Many people have false info on orchids. It was refreshing to listen to someone purely give helpful tips for care! Beautiful! I watch you EVERY day! Your always informative and have saved many of my plants. Love from KY 😍

Yes. Amazon is amazing. I went to Walmart, Lowe’s and Home Depot looking for these pots. No where to be found. I did find them at a specialized orchid nursery but they were green and not clear. I like the clear to inspect the roots.

Great information and useful tips. I started collecting orchids last fall. I now have 7. What seems to be working for me is I repot right away into a clear wide vase with the orchid bark mix. Once a week I fill the vase with lukewarm water until the bark floats a bit. I let it sit and absorb for 30 minutes to 1 hour. I drain all the water, cupping my hand over to catch the bits of bark. When it's time to add food I simply add it to the water and let it sit. There's no holes in my vases but so far no issues. The roots aren't crowded and I can see hiw the roots are doing through the vase. ☺👍

All of that was easy to learn when I had my orchids. But the reporting is hard with that bark and all the thick spidery roots. When you repot them will you please please please show us how you do it.

Just received one as a birthday gift and orchids are new to me. It was already outgrowing the pot! The roots are outside of the clear container. Lol. This was very informative. Thank you so much!

Very comprehensive and to the point video! So much misinformation out there about orchids. I had read an article that advised to use ice cubes to water it. No! Plants in general do not like cold water because it shocks it! It's funny how people write articles and just because they write articles, think they know what they are talking about. My roommate and I got a couple of orchids and I have a lot of plants and do well with them, but my roommate not so much. lol. This video is definitely helpful.

I love your videos and envy your energy. I love seeing the kids and cats, you and your husband and always looks forward to your videos. I agree about the ice cubes. There were ice cube orchids marketed where u used three ice cubes to water. First it’s cold. Second it evaporates to quickly and the orchid roots can’t utilize the moisture. There are all kinds of gimmicks around. I just water or feed , let drain and do this once a week outside or every 10 days or so inside. Also a humidifier is wonderful.

If you look at the back of fertilizer orchid mix is just half the concentration of regular house plant fertilizer, pour half the houseplant fertilizer in a different container and fill the rest of the bottle with water. Usually they are the same price but orchid fertilizer is half strength so it works out much more expensive

I have one of these I was given in the summer of 2020 and I wasn't sure how to take care of it. I repotted it, but there seem to be many roots above the potting mix's surface. They're going out in all directions around the crown. Should I replant and see if I can bury more of the root system? It also now only has one leaf because the others started looking wrinkled (prune like) so I clipped them. I'd really like to save this plant because it was a gift.

I LOVE ORCHIDS! not sure which I have but I’ve had excellent luck with all 4 of mine! BUT, I’ve never repotted them. One with thick dark leaves is super leafy, meaning they have very thick dark leaves. It has not seemed to grow any new bloom stocks this season, which it bloomed for months and months much like yours last year; it’s humid here except we have a cool front now and it’s in low 60’s in FL (yay)! I l keep them watered and with outdoor temp. Water that I naturally distill. I am now wondering if I need to re-pot it In a larger orchid pot? Love the video! I love my orchids, they are the first love within the last year where I first became obsessed with plants particularly orchids! BUT Mainly succulents! Thanks for all you do!

@@kristendeleon3893 we live in a tropical country. Very high humidity. I think that's why it works.
Grandma would either use fishing line to tie it down. Just a few loops to make the plant steady. Or nail a stem(?) straight to a tree trunk. Doesn't hurt the plant as long as you dont smush it. (wild orhids here attach and reproduce in mango trees)
Another way is to plant it in a dried coconut husk. Then hung in verandas where they get full full sun. This and consistent watering helps flower production.
We water/spray them with water every day. The roots are able to drain fast and simultaneously get a little moisture from the air itself.
In summer, our wall of orchids is a very hit photo background among the teens. Makes my grandma very proud.

My Grandma was great with orchids too! She passed away last August and I have one of her orchids now. It was blooming beautifully (obviously, she knew what she was doing) and I was devastated that it lost its flowers in December. But there was a new brance with flowers growing and blooming just a week after, and they still are happy and healthy and growing even more! It has a very special place in my heart and I named the orchid Henri after my grandma (her name was Herniette)

1:05 Clear plastic food containers, washed, do wonderful orchid pots after drilling holes in the bottom and the sides.
The roots really like the extra air, especially if your plant is bigger and the pot is getting large, as large pots means higher risk of stale air.
I got a bunch of those orchids and some other orchid genera, some over a decade old. Just make sure they never get cold ( min 15°C ), the roots can breathe, and water when the roots are done drinking what's avaliable to them ( they change color ), and they will do well.
East or west window Sun is good for them. If your window is southe-oriented, a sheer curtain will attenuate the Sun just fine.
An all-purpose 20-20-20 fertilizer at half strenght twice a month does the job too.
I use a gallon with 1/4 strenght and use that every watering, otherwise I lose track of which orchid is due for fertilizer.
Phalaenopsis tolerate relatively low air humidity ( keep it above 35% though ) and also tolerate poor air mouvement as long as the pot has enough holes for the roots to still get some fresh air.
They don't tolerate cold. If your house is really warm in the Summer, they will grow fine but it inhibits blooming. Don't worry, they will bloom stronger in the Winter from all the gathered energy of the Summer.

Hello :) A collegue of mine who is a seller in the plants area told me that orchids must have transparent pot because the roots need to get the light too, (that's why they are green). Is that true ? Because orchids in opaque pots seems to look fine.
Thank you for your helpful videos, have a nice day :)

    • @JamesThomas-qd7hp
      @JamesThomas-qd7hp 7 лет назад +1

most Moth orchids (Phalaenopsis) do tend to have photosynthesising roots, but some orchids don't. there are some orchids that live on the ground! If you are looking in to why clear pots are good for phals, then there are a good number of reasons. The roots can photosynthesise, you can tell if the roots need water or not (they tend to turn silvery/grey) and like Laura said, diseases and problems are easier to spot. But phals can be grown in opaque pots too!

+GardenAnswer. Hi Laura, I never knew you had a video on orchids YAY lol, I was gifted a BEAUTIFUL purple Phalaenopsis orchid and I purchased one of those *Just Add Ice* orchids and I'm happy you mentioned not using ice because it shocks them. I SO hope they last a long time because I want to get more of them they're SO GORGEOUS!!💖

What do you do with the steams? I have 3 orchids that are just done blooming and now the tips (about an inch) are brown? Do I cut it? If so, how long?

I just got my first orchid today,I dropped a pretty penny on him he was 25$ because his flowers are insane. Idk it's specific name but these flowers are these purple/pink/white iridescent look with veining all through it, it took my breath away when I seen him. They had cheaper ones but I couldn't pass this guy up.i have 85 plants but this i my FIRST orchid!!

How would you go about pruning orchids to start new growth?

James Foster orchids do not need pruning.. it’s all in the fertilizers you use and nutrients you feed your plant 😊
