I had no idea that there was such a thing as "Multipotentialites" This is who I am. I have always created and moved through many types of mediums. I have done weaving, painting, jewelry making, bookbinding, wood carving, card making, candle making, sketching and drawing, and wool felting to name a few. I have always carried around guilt and shame for being this way. I was always told that I never followed through, that I had no commitment, and that I was lazy. I can't believe that there is a name for what I am. This video has really impacted me. I will need to watch it a few more times and really process what you have said. YES PLEASE MORE MULTIPOTENTIALITE CONTENT!!!!! I've only recently discovered the term and am still struggling with it - at first it fit so well and I allowed myself to do EVERYTHING :D and then I became overwhelmed by all the projects lying around unfinished and discovered that I have and want to get rid of some projects and prioritize others. As of today I've finished two major projects with important emotional meanings for myself and several smaller ones for friends. And I discovered that it feels good to finish things and sort of declutter my mental as well as physical space. So I guess my cycle is clutter space/starting projects and decluttering/finishing projects, and both really brings me so much joy!

Thanks ana for the video. I just wanted to clarify that being creative isn’t just about potential or artistic viability. It can be form of healing, like you said not all creative pursuits are done as a means to an end. In fact the expression of creativity is sometimes all that matters, all to often in this sometimes rigid world we need to be able to express this side of ourselves in an unselfconscious way. If it means dabbling in a number of creative pursuits and honing our curiosity, so be it. I don’t think being this way is at all a negative thing in my opinion. In fact if artistic expression was seen as more accessible and something that can be done easily and freely a lot of healing would come to the world.

I’m going to have to think about this for a minute. My first thought was that I’m not creative at all. But then I realized I’m not creative in a productive sense; I’m not a crafter. But there are other possibilities. I love travel because I love exploring and getting to know new places and new people. I love grocery stores because I enjoy cooking new things. I love school because I enjoy learning new things. One of the things I love about living in my car is all the things I am learning about living a different lifestyle. I have never been especially good about science or math, but I am becoming knowledgeable about solar power and components of solar energy systems. And I can teach others, which brings me great satisfaction.
I also admire greatly other people’s adventures. My friend Lisa is a talented quilter. Not long ago she bought some rope and announced she wanted to learn to make rope baskets. Her first attempts were not terribly successful. Then she got it! Now she is crafting the most gorgeous and creative baskets, dying rope and weaving in appropriate trinkets, buttons and trims. And it brings me glee to see each of her new creations. This is the same curiosity and joy that fuels my enjoyment of museums, art shows, galleries and craft fairs. Not to own or consume but just to drink in and enjoy. I suppose some of us have to be observers; all creators need an audience, if only to provide feedback.
Thank you Ana! As usual you have given me something to think deeply about. I’m going to be watching as perhaps I am creative in my way, even though I am not producing results. What are all the ways living is creative?
I hope this finds you in comfortable and engaging surroundings. I am starting cardiac rehab on September 15th. I hope that will help me get in better shape. Also preparing to rent my little house out for the winter and move back into my car. Excited to be back out in the desert and see my desert friends. I got a newer, somewhat larger car, which I am excited about turning into a little home. Many tasks and projects coming up.
Much love Ana and Brian, my friends on the other side of the world. Thank you internet for allowing us to connect!

Sometimes the ideas come so quickly that I get overwhelmed. I started jotting things down on scraps of paper, sticky notes etc, it got messy. I have a small notebook for writing down notes now, but I lose track of which notes are where!
I have found that with age, I'm actually more excited to share with my friends the ideas and hobbies I've picked up. Where I feel insecure is when I see those much younger than me with very unique ideas, but in creative spaces people are so encouraging and generally positive, my ideas only expand through that insecurity :)

Thank you for this perspective, it really explains why some of the things my teachers and mentors tried to tell me don’t seem to get through to me. I’ve been told so many times that I need to focus, choose a medium and then practice for years to get good at it, and that my problem is I skip from one thing to the next. But the thing is, eventually I get back to the things I really enjoy time and time again. And I get back to them with added experience from a different medium. Potentially, it can be a good thing. Not everyone’s goal is to become a master of one single art. It’s great to be a master, but the choice is inevitable: if you want to become perfect at one thing, you have to sacrifice a lot and have this strict focus. For me it would mean losing all fun and burning out pretty quick. So what’s the point? I hope there really is a way to get interesting results from a bit more scattered art path.

    • @anagoldberg

I really enjoyed how you put in words, Julia. Indeed, choosing just one thing means sacrificing other ones. Multipotentialites do refuse to choose!

"Focus!" they say. Yeah right. It's like squirrels and birds telling a fish how wonderful it is up in the trees, these nuts taste great, and on and on but the fish, curious, tries climbing the tree but does not get far. Telling me to focus is like telling the fish to climb! Forget it. I like the way you described things, beyond the useless focus advice.

This is such a helpful video! I'm definitely a multi-potentialite and these tips are great. I know from experience now not to de-clutter or get rid of ALL my stuff in any one category ... it works better for met to pair down a little ... things like yarn I can donate any that is not my favorite but I need to keep some because inevitably I will go back to crocheting from time to time. Same with my bead work ... I like to make key-chains and things. Even sewing ... which I do a lot less of now, I kept my primary threads that I use and a very small amount of fabric but I did donate any that I was sure I wasn't going to work with. It feels better to keep the best and let go of only the true excess. Thank you for another great video Ana!

    • @DrunkenUFOPilot
      @DrunkenUFOPilot Месяц назад

That's an important point non-creative, non-multitalented people don't understand. I find books like "Clutter's Last Stand" useful, but reducing stuff is counter-productive for us. I'll put something aside for a long time then suddenly one day realize what I need to do with it. I may need parts for a current project, so scavange parts from the carcasses of old abandoned projects. A "junk" box or "misc. parts" box is a vital tool for the mad scientist/artist, and the more the better!

I am so glad i found this video and I can't thank you enough for this. I was always told to just stick to one thing and become "the best" in it but I couldn't keep up with just one thing at all. My ex boyfriend told me that I am not "ambitious enough" because I didn't have a fixed goal in life and that he needed someone more goal oriented. My parents constantly force me to fit into one thing and even though i know they're just trying to help me find a career I didn't know how to explain them that I can't do one single job for my entire life and just used to cry for hours thinking I'll remain unemployed and a failure in life if I stay this way. I think this will be the beginning of a journey to embrace my multipotentiality and really become myself.

Hi Ana, thank you so much for this video. I didnt realise there, was such a thing as a multipotentiolite. No I realise I must be one. There are so many ideas and skills I enjoy trying and feel frustrated that I don't have enough time to try them or finish them all. So now after your video I dont feel so guilty about all my unfinished projects, which I hope to complete one day. Thank you for this discussion and any time you have more talks on rhis subject I would love to hear them. Take care Gale x

Thanks for your empowering video. It´s so true, it should be about finding our own happiness., instead of follwing sociatl expectations of efficiency. So often I tried to "focus on one thing" as they say but it always felt so restricting, and actually made me sad after a time. Yes, it takes a lot longer working on 4 things at the same time! :D Buuut for me it´s so much more fun. so thanks for encouraging to move on our very own path to find happiness. best regards from the Netherlands.

Thank you so much!! For the last 8 years I have been doing outreach for the homeless. Started as something small and then in ways I still don’t understand, it has become national. International at times for refugee projects. Now, we’re a formal non profit and in 27 states and I have been so overwhelmed, because I don’t know how to write grants or do the things to allow us to serve more people. Not to mention that I’ve never paid myself, so if I can get a grant and do so, I can pay myself and save my own housing, since I am dealing with health issues. This is fantastic! They have a grant writing skill share. Thank you so much!

Thank you for the video, I didn't know when I started watching how encouraging it would be. I had never heard 'multipotentialite' before you talked about it a few months(?) ago. I hesitate to call myself one (for fear of hubris, which is silly I suppose) but my collection of craft/art/sewing/building/baking supplies and projects over the years makes me think I must be one😆. I identified with much of what you mentioned and it made me feel better about not completely destashing things that I can't get to all the time and to allow for cycling through a variety of hobbies within reason. Thankfully I am the only one who criticizes my own hobby collection😅

Fast learning and for that always meet with jealousy, cause I got good fast to new skills. Knitting, drawing, watercolor painting, basketry, paper marbelling, felting, spinning, weaving, encaustic art, wool dyeing, haiku writing, calligraphy of every kind from blackletter to Spencerian script, falconry, nostepinning, creating medieval miniatures on vellum with gold leaf illumination, beading, ceramic decorating with slip, metal clay jewellery making.....have I made a penny from any of these? No. I do them for the sheer love of learning the technique and then... I move on. I love to learn and it's the love of learning to do these things that drives me. Learning gives me an inner peace and makes me feel so very alive. I'm only 66, I've more years to go and things to learn. I've a bucket list of those. So yeah...thanks for the term multipptentialist. Good morning Ana - what a wonderful video to wake up to! I wonder if one of the toughest obstacles to overcome is finding the time to nurture one’s creativity? My daughter is a very talented artist who studied Fine Art at university and has dabbled in many, many mediums but her life now is so busy with a full time job, a home, a marriage and a 2 year old that she has very little time to nurture her creative side which I can see is difficult for her. She is sharing her love of art with her daughter so hopefully through this she will be able to rekindle her creative fire.
I dabble in many things but have never achieved what I’d call “mastery” of any of them. My knitted projects become better with each project but are never without a mistake or two; my cousin pointed out that in many cultures it is considered good luck to hand make imperfect pieces, especially if you will be gifting them. So, I will “hang my hat” on that wisdom and just enjoy the process of creating!
All the best to you and Brian. Stay well. Hugs from Canada.
