Chasing Bull Elk With Uncle Jimmer: New Mexico Archery Elk | (Amazon Episode)

  • Randy and his Uncle Jimmer were lucky enough to both draw New Mexico archery elk tags. Randy and Jimmer, though nephew and uncle, have spent their lives more like brothers. This is Jimmer's first archery elk hunt, a great reason to reunite with Randy. Follow along as the guys and their llamas chase elk on the public lands of New Mexico in the heat of early summer.
They pack their string of llamas up a dried river bed in search of a couple backcountry bulls. Randy plans to hunt a new piece of land that was opened by RMEF, but after a couple days on not finding bulls they decide to keep moving.
Despite this being a hard tag to draw, this hunt doesn't hand them any sort of success. They continue to hunt hard and have a big bull come in minutes too late. Continuing their effort until the very last day, a couple bulls come sprinting into their calls.

You and Jim get it... It's not the hunting, or the where, so much as the with who. I wouldn't trade the who I hunt with for anything. And this video is fab. Tag stew is just part of it. But your uncle said it right. Got all the thrill with out all the work. LOVE that.

Here's how my day is going... Got up at 4:30am on my first ever antelope hunt, saw a few (put a stock on a couple), didn't get'em but didn't blow'em out of the county either (no clue where they went, assuming they bedded down), got my Randy Newberg notification, when the temps hit triple digits I went back to my hotel room in the AC, had some ice cream (before dinner) watched this fantastic video and now I'm going back out. Yup... It's a good day. 😀

We lived by a rule Elk hunting. We NEVER hunted before the 3rd or 4th week of September!! Usually the 4th, depending on the moon. The 10th day after the full moon was a good recipe. We hunted and ALWAYS had rutting elk. And, the best thing is, that most guys had been hunting all month and we’re burned out. We had no competition!! Try it, you’ll never be disappointed. We were always archery hunting.

Randy, your videos are fantastic, my friend!! This one really hit home for a couple of reasons..1. This hunt took place in NM, which is where I am, and being completely bias here, but I think NM is one of the best places to hunt! 2. The emotion I saw on your uncle’s eyes when he was talking about how much he loved you was something special! Reminded me of when I was living in Alabama and was able to take my father out hunting for the first time. I will remember that hunt for a lifetime. Being able to do something I absolutely love and share that with someone I love....nothing beats it!!! Thanks for sharing this with us Randy!

It has always been hard to for me to find the elk- I know it mostly my fault because I was not willing to pay the price but I kept coming back year after year different spots in Colorado. I came back for the friendships, the beauty of the area and the exhilaration when it all works..Thanks for keeping those moments alive for me.

I have watched this episode on Amazon and now shared here on RUclips, I enjoyed it both times and I laughed and learned throughout as well as Uncle Jimmer getting me to tear up at the end there with how extremely thankful he was to have that heartpounding experience with his best friend and nephew, even though it didn't get to release an arrow and it was tough finding them it was the moments and minutes spent with someone who he loves and appreciates that mattered most. I had to laugh at his point about that being all the fun of the hunt without any of the work. That is why I nominated this one as my favorite moment from Season 7 when that question/poll was put up on Facebook. Sure Alaska Dall Sheep and Black Bear is a cooler more interesting place to be, but making that someday into a today with family just gets to me. My Dad will be doing a someday with my youngest brother out after Mule Deer and/or Black Bear, I plan on tagging along regardless if I can get a tag or not, at least get a fishing license.
I am sure you noticed this afterwards, but when Dan is talking with Randy as they sit water the closed caption keeps saying Michael, I know they are two young tall guys with beards that are part of the camera crew, but they are not the same person. (I noticed this when watching on Amazon as well)
Uncle Jimmer is truly a gem and I hope he is able to come back out west and hunt some bugling bulls again with archery equipment, maybe a more northern state. Thanks for sharing this wonderful Grade A story about family and llamas.

@@Fresh_Tracks you are quite welcome it was genuine and from the heart. Family, true family whether blood or not is extremely high on my important to me list. So any time some family can get together for their once a year hunt like you and Mathew (aside from the off camera waterfowling) or in this case Uncle Jimmer, it just means something extra no matter the outcome or if a tag is punched.

Excellent job on this video, I know you guys worked hard to make this a great trip and your correct, it was a very successful trip, success is what we make of it and in my mind, it was time well spent with the ones we cherish.
