Dear friends and followers, welcome back to my channel, today´s video is the second out of an upcoming Airbus system knowledge video series. Today we will cover some basic knowledge of the A320 hydraulic system,
This is the least you should know prior starting you A320 Type rating. This is not a requirement but definitely nice to know and some of the topics can definitely be within the questionnaire in your airline assessment.
The A320 Hydraulic system consists of three independent continuously operating systems and marked with the colors green, blue, and yellow.
Each system has its own hydraulic fluid reservoir and accumulator but fluids can´t be transferred from one system to another. And the normal system operating pressure for each system is 3,000 psi, which is about 200 bars compared to your car tire pressure which is 2 to 3 bars.
To provide this kind of pressure, each hydraulic system has it´s own pump. The Green and Yellow systems have their own engine driven pump plus the yellow system has an electrical driven back up pump. The blue system only has an electrically driven pump for normal operation and for emergency cases a second pump driven by a Ram Air Turbine, I´ll get back to that later.
Overhead Panel:
All pumps can be select ON or AUTO or intentionally OFF with the respective hydraulic push buttons on the overhead panel. So in the normal operating configuration, there are no lights illuminated on the HYD panel.
ECAM:
So if all system are operating normal the ECAM hydraulic page would look like this.
At the bottom you have the Reservoir level and a fire shut off valve. A green in-line indicates the associated pushbutton switch for the pump is ON and hydraulic pressure is normal.
Here you can see that the BLUE ELEC pump is ON and hydraulic pressure is normal.
An amber LO indicates the pump is ON but hydraulic pressure is low.
An amber cross-line would indicate the BLUE ELEC pump is OFF.
And if there were to be a failure the ECAM HYD page will automatically be displayed with any Hydraulic system fault, or by pressing the HYD pushbutton switch on the ECAM control panel.
Make sure to watch till the end as I´ll be going through some system failures.
Thanks for watching, all the best your "Captain" Joe
Big thank you to my fellow instagram colleagues who provided me with a great thumbnail picture.

Captain Joe, a brilliant video and presentation. Can you please explain ETOPS in this series or in a separate video. With thanks and happy flying =)
Check Wendover Productions for ETOPS explanation. It is not so complicated, better keep an actual pilot with other type of videos.
The concept of ETOPS is not complicated correct, but how to determine capable airports and how it is programmed may not always be straight forward. On a separate note, I don't think captain Joe needs a spokesman, he can decide for himself =)
ETOPS.... Engines Turn Or People Swim.... lol...
I had to put together a power point for or students on this, at the request of the airlines that are hiring them. Turns out, that when interviewed and asked what ETOPS is, they had no idea...and it's not in the FARs requiering schools to teach it. But now we do, or at least introduce them to it...
Extended Twin Operations or Extended Operations, depending on who you talk to...
ok good\
I love the A320 everything is just so well thought out, it's a joy to study it. thanks for your videos, they are really well done and get to the point quickly without any unnecessary rambling.
Excellent video as always! Thanks Captain Joe!
Really appreciate all of your videos! Thanks for making them.
Gracias capitán. Excelente exposición de los sistemas hidráulicos.
Thank you captain, so enlightening!
Grateful you guys are up on all that. At this point in my life it's all WAAAAAY too complicated to keep track of when it's all happening at once.
Thanks for another great insight.... Capt!
Like the way you give an in depth knowledge on the subject.
Your instructions are quite useful for the students as well as instructors of sha shib aviation academy.
Thank you so much Captain Joe. Clear, concise and extremely informative video Please do more videos on all systems. Starting with the propulsion system. Thank you Sir

Thanks Captain Joe. Great video as always.
Thank you Capt Joe.. Good stuff
Thanks so much! I was recommended this video by a commenter on VASAviation today, after expressing my confusion over a hydraulics incident that had resulted in a loss of Nose Wheel Steering - and I found it so interesting, that I just had to stay and subscribe! :D
So good! Thanks Captain Joe
Excellent video! Very good explanations as always. Looking forward to the next one!
Your #1 Canadian fan :)
a big applause to you Captain, was eagerly waiting for this series... just fantabulous..

Thank you so very much for all this information! You are amazing.
I'm so glad I find your channel big salute to you Captain Joe.
Good instruction!
Thank you so much for the video! I love Airbus and I love the ECAM! I could read about it everyday all day long. Thank you for the great video. Please keep making ECAM videos!
Thanks a lot Captain Joe.
Keep up the good job.
Thx for the great videos. Thumbs up!!
Not a pilot or intending to be, but as an engineer, very intrigued by your work!
This video was exceeding well done. I put together the Pilot Systems Training Manuals for the A319/320/321, A330 and A350 (and a couple Boeing aiircraft) while working st USAirways/American Airlines. I recently Retired.
really good explanation, thank you.
This is my favorite video you have ever done so far
You are experience 7 years we are learning RUclips here within a minutes Thank you very much Talents Captain Joe.
Foysal
The QF32 would be a good case study on how the systems affect each other
True but A380 only has 2 hydraulic systems instead of the normal 3
Excellent video!
Amazing job thank-you
Great video as always! I'm applying for a pilot program who train the pilots to fly A320s by the end of the program..and your videos are coming in at Just about perfect time. Absolutely love them and very informative. Keep up the good work captain. Cheers!
where are you now ?
keep going captain... i am from Saudi Arabia (KSA)and i love your videos...please keep upload the videos
Very interesting video, thumbs up.
This is what I was waiting for since a week
Very informative video, Capt. Joe. Now I know why years ago (1970s&80s) when there was a Hydraulic leak most likely the flight was cancelled. I'm sure that today's technology is much better. Cheers.
The amount of info in this video is just 🔥🔥🔥 great effort sir
Hi Joe i just want you to know that i'm a hudge fan and when i grow up i want to be a pilot. I also want to thank you because you have cleared a lot of aviation releted things cleared up for me!
I would without a second thought, buying his airbus lessons if Captain Joe decided to do one, thanks captain, wish there were more for the airbus system that i can learn from you, im on line training right now :))))
Hi Captain Joe. I always enjoy watching your videos even though I am not a pilot. I have a question for you: What hydraulic system failures have you experienced while you are actually flying a plane?
CAPT Joe, Excellent!
Great video Joe 😍
I really love this videos❤️
These videos are amazing
great video love it
These videos are great. I fly a 737 for 6 months of the year, and the A330/321/320 the other 6 months of the year. These videos are a nice refresher.
Please tell me you're joking, otherwise it would only be fair to warn people who you fly for.
Do a video about flaps, slats and spoilers
$heikki manners?
I mean it is a good idea $heikki
Great video captain 👍❤️
Captain Joe, I think it would be nice to know how flaps, slats, air break, and spoilers work and how they all effect the characteristics of how the plane performs. Maybe even talk about different types of flaps and how they are both different and the same. Just a thought. I'll be looking forward to seeing more of your videos.
Excellent Information
Now I really love the A320 Family (Especially A320 , A320neo & A321)
It's really a Master
as usual fantastic video, thank you for taking the time to create it, are you planning a special video for your 200k subscriber milestone ? kind regards kieren
Happiness is new video notification from Captain Joe..
Thank you for the video. Very helpful.
What software do you use to demonstrate ECAM with associated failures?
great video!
That was a decent explanation captain! 🖒Captain, would you explain how flaps exactly work and what are flaps 1 to 5?
Captain Joe thanks you for explain the hydraulic system, i have other question about how we can start the engine manual, do you have a video about manual engine start?
Awesome!
Muito bom capitão joe
Do a video on the FMS please. Like if you agree
SwagRanger FMGC/MCDU
MCDU
MCDU not FMS and btw it's FMC...
Here's a simple in-browser simulator that you can play with
www.equicom.net/mcdu/
It's limited, but you can press the buttons
nah FMSystem / FMControl, just same name (i im not mistaken)
Very nice video again! Congrats on the great job! Best of luck with the new airline!
Would it be possible to make a video showing how to arm the slide on the overwing emergency exit (windows) on the A320, please?
Thenk you very much in advance.
Dear Captain Joe ...as perfect as possible . Please help me by a link of your other tutorials.
Thank you captain
Keep on the great work. Liked this one too. -:)
Hi Captain Joe. Could you demonstrate a landing when one of this failures takes place on air? Perhaps you could also show us the cockpit communications with the tower during this situation.
Loved it
Hi Captain! Can you please do a video about the Airbus laws and/or about the autopilot (about the push/pull knob). Thanks! Safe flight always!
airbus avionics are just amazing
im 17 yo and i wanna be a pilot. and this channel is giving me so many lessons
after 3 years...
Did you became a pilot???
Great Video
Am impressed how many young people are inspired to become pilots by Captain Joe!
@Captain Joe
Fantastic and informative video!
Talking about the HYD pressures and PTUs, a few years back I was onboard an A319 merrily cruising towards FCO, when suddenly I heard the PTU ¨Barking dog¨ must say it caught me offguard since the only times I heard it where on the ground and I sort of knew what it was.
What are the reasons for it to kick-in mid flight?
Keep up the great videos!
Another great video joe keep up the great work budy. I hope u gonna be a captain soon so I can be your first officer hurry 😊
Great video Captain Joe!!! Can yo do a video of Non Precision Approach, we found interesting how to use the "TRK/FPA ", V/DEV, and what is the most highly recommended procedure in this type of approaches?; Manage mode, selected, or raw data?... Thanks I hope you can do it!!!
Hi Captain Joe. Most of us know about the main flight controls (rudder, ailerons, elevators, flaps), but what are the spoilers and any others on the airbus?
Lack of redundancy suggests that they are not critical but it would be great to know what they contribute.
Thanks for another great video.
Thank you for great video! I'm interest in Airbus.
Seems less redundancy than E170. E170 has electric backup pump for each EDP(HYD1&2), and HYD3 system(electric only) has another electric backup pump.
E170 PTU works HYD1 to HYD 2. so HYD2 taken care of nose wheel steering& LDG gear operation.
Greetings Joe,
Do you have plans of recording a video about the working principles of Flaps and Slats as well as the physical explanation of them?
Cheers, Ahmet
HY
Captian Joe,
Your videos on every topic related to planes are awesome.
I am an electrical engineer by profession but after watching your videos at this time now I am able to be your Co-pilot.
I am available 24 hours and you will find me the best pilot.
Just kidding, great effort.
Awsome !!
