  • The process of forging a blade from a cable. Mosaic damask steel from the cable. On the cutting edge steel W110, zone hardening 62 units. Such video from the photos I already had, I shot the full video.
    my website: sites.google.c...
    Frequently Asked Questions: The billet is soaked in kerosene. This is necessary for good welding (forging) steel. I sprinkle flux (90% borax + 5% quartz sand + 5% charcoal powder) this is necessary for forging (forge) welding. The flux is alloyed with scale - the formed substance is sufficiently fluid and is easily displaced by deformation. In addition, the flux protects against oxygen and charcoal, carburizes the surface layer of metal - which lowers the welding temperature (if in brief). I do not answer the question of cost - write to mail: sites.google.c...

      Although he knows what he is doing, his method is not good enough for FIF. Not enough sparks and things going wrong. He mostly uses powertools, his hammer technique is a bit poor and his handtools are limited. This is fine for normal work and youtube, but not a TV show.

      The fact is FIF is just that, a show. You need to have drama in a show. You need to have "excitement". That's why they come up with random and stupid challanges. It's designed to make someone fail.
      And I've heard from serveral people why they decided not to go through with FIF. It's a contractual shitshow.
      So instead of randomly saying "u wrong", you actually take some effort and explain why. As I have done two times now.

    In how far is using only one type of steel damascus? Maybe it is folded or patternwelded, but not damascus.

    • @spudhead169
      @spudhead169 5 лет назад

      A pattern welded into steel is called a damacus. There is no such thing as Damacus Steel, it's merely a generic term used to describe a pattern welded into steel. This was all explained in another Smithing video made by some other dude. If I come across the link again I'll update.

    the purpose of making a damascus blade is to make the grains of the steel as long as possible so they can endure shear and bending stresses. Not just to make the blade beautiful - and the grains of the steel apparent to the naked eye. And this blade has 5 obvious regions (streaked areas) where grain boundaries are incoherent. So , not such a great job for the purpose of making this knife as THE best cutting tool. Nevertheless, nice technique...

    • @patrickd9551

      Most blacksmiths and machinists don't wear gloves. When forging gloves force you to grip the hammer harder and in turn you can get tennis elbow. When dealing with machines you should NEVER wear gloves, it the machine catches your glove it should seriously hurt you. There is a time and place for gloves, but in blacksmithing it's rare.

      It's borax which acts like a flux to prevent impurities/oxidation from getting trapped between 2 pieces of metal being forge welded together, which results in a MUCH stronger weld...
