    As an amateur blacksmith myself I have made a few knifes and even a scissors .. I am amazed at this .. I am not a fan of using power grinders to shape a blade.. I want to learn how to do it old school forge anvil and hammer only! but I learned from this video GREAT WORK AND A BEAUTIFUL BLADE YOU DID MAKE SIR!

  • @YacolJ
    @YacolJ Месяц назад +8

    This video shows the artisan and artist in this man. The hand forged tip. The hand grinded scallops and everything else for that matter. The mosaic pin. Beautiful work. Best blade I've ever seen on this channel. Thank you for sharing your craft.

    Love the design of the damascus, and the handle and your profile, but I'm worried about the structural integrity of the blade. I noticed cracks and a lot of cold shuts. I strenuous testing it would break I'm certain. Should've used more flux and really caked it on. I think a canister would've been better with powdered steel to help really seal up those open spaces in the chain.

      I think a Damascus is form over function, like a work of art. It's not meant for utility knives which can put up with terrible abuse while looking at best, well, utilitarian. Each has their place. The Damascus here is probably plenty strong enough for light work (especially after the twisting) but not appropriate for a SEAL to carry on missions or anything.

      @joshschneider9766 Месяц назад +12

      @@alexanderchapman2525 no. The original damask steels were used for fighting swords and frickin gun barrels. You couldnt possibly be morw wrong. This is just bad craft.

      I understand your concern and I was thinking the same thing. However during the forging, he ground away at the blank to remove voids. I think that he was able to make a pretty solid blade considering that he also twisted it. This is not a blade that you take into battle and so I wouldn't really be all that worried about it.

    Unless he filled all the air gaps in the chains with powdered steal, idk how this blade is possible. Cold shunts much? I could be wrong

    De fato um dos damascos mais lindos que já vi. Embora a faca como todo não pareça ser boa por causa da geometria de fio excepcionalmente robusta, de fato é um empecilho para um bom desempenho de corte. Más com certeza o damasco ficou maravilhoso.

    Absolutely glorious this! Not exactly the pattern I thought when I saw the chain at the beginning - thought it'd be more of a droplet pattern, but when you start twisting the billet, sir I knew we were in for a treat! Thank you for the great video. What would you say the total man-hours are here then?

  • @nmp3120
    @nmp3120 Месяц назад +1

    The blade is a work of art. Beautiful pattern, very sharp, nice forged tip. That you were able to do this with a grinder rather than a belt sander shows your skill as a craftsman. I do think that the tang is a little thick and that you might have put a bolster on the handle. I think where the blade meets the handle is a little clunky. I did appreciate the way you increased the thickness of the handle as it went from the front to the back. That aside, a very beautiful and well made knife.

    Awesome job man. I would love to see someone make a real traditional damascus knife, sward, dagar, whatever, the original way. No welders, no grinders, no chop saws, no leaf springs, no chains, no this, no that, just good old steel, a furnace and a hammer plus other tools of the trade they used to use. Not saying your work isn't bad ass because it definitely is.

    Magnificent, you are the king of the grinder!
    But I repeat myself again, protect your ears against noise! Just by watching the video, I turn down the sound, so I imagine the noise of the grinder in real life, I use one myself sometimes, and I could never use it without my noise-canceling headphones.
    Otherwise, put reusable earplugs made of a sort of silicone, it costs nothing on Chinese sites, and it protects very well from noise. I always have a pair next to the bed if my neighbors make noise in the morning while doing work at home, it also saves me sleep.
    Really, think about it, protect your ears, because all the beautiful things you will have made during your life, they will make you deaf. And it is not pleasant not to hear, as much for the one who cannot hear as for those around you who have to speak loudly to be heard. Or like my father who turns up the volume of the television extremely loud until it hurts my ears, he manages to fall asleep with such a loud volume. But for him, it is his years as a DJ and musician that have made him deaf. When you are young, you think you are invincible, but when you are old and deaf, having to wear a hearing aid is not at all pleasant either.
