When I was 15 I first heard the voice that I still 50 yrs later cannot get enough of ! This band Queen is by far the best rock group ever put together ever!
Thanks for this great review phil. I'm probably 2 or 3 years older than you, and i went to see Mott the hoople at the palace theatre in Manchester around 1973. Queen were supporting and me and my mates were blown away by what we saw. I went into ,'boots' in Stockport a couple of days later and asked for the queen album. No luck. I had to order it from another record shop and it took over a week to get it. Then played it non stop. Happy Days! I agree with you _ the early rock albums by queen were the best. Thanks 🙂
oh my gosh that's awesome! surprisingly enough someone actually recorded the concert you attended all the way back on Queen's first tour! ruclips.net/video/B-wNqfKWhe8/видео.htmlsi=7yFLE37fPiX0loD- the show has been around in bootleg form for a few years now, and its a shining example of Queen giving their all to make a name for themselves in the music scene
Great review. I like how you went into detail with the cds, vinyl and booklet as well as the inserts. You are right, as a Queen fan, i bought this super deluxe set cos i love this album. Was awesome to hear this album really polished and cleaned out to get the absolute best sounding recording. My favorite track off Queen 1 is My Fairy King, i love that song. Keep em coming and rock on 🤘
It is (and always was) also my No1 QUEEN Album, it still just knocks me off of my feet and especially KEEP YOURSELF ALIVE will always be my favorite Queen Track 🙂👑
Dear Phil, I well remember purchasing the vinyl record in 1974 which I still have and treasure to this day. It survived the general vinyl cull that most of us of a certain age undertook. It held it's place then and still holds it's place now. A very special time in my life, a very special band and a very special album. Best wishes, Paul.
Phil always love your reviews, whether i decide to purchase something or not. I have listened to the remix and while i find it very good i just can not bring myself to pick this up, the main reason being the changing of the original track list. If they included a new remaster of the original album and mix, like Deep Purple did with Machine Head, i probably would have got this. Thanks Phil for all your content.
I’ve had this album since 1973 and the remix is FANTASTIC! All musical elements have a bit more separation. I am hearing things that I didn’t before. In my opinion, well worth rebuying. I only bought the single disc remix. Maybe Santa will gift the full set to me! Phil, we are ALMOST on the same page. My favorite Queen album is Sheer Heart Attack followed by the debut then Queen 2.
I'm surprised that no one has mentioned this. This new boxed set marks the first time that the De Lane Lea demos have been presented from tape, thanks to the discovery of long-lost multitrack tapes. The previous release of these demos was de-clicked frrom a fairly worn out acetate.
Hi Phil great me too I loved Queen’s first album and Queen 2 and Sheer Heart Attack the 3 best Queen Albums in my eyes that they made when I first heard their music in 1973/74 “Seven Seas Of Rye” I couldn’t believe it so fresh and new my best Queen songs are from The Album Queen 2 track called “Nevermore” and I also love “Lily of the Valley” from Sheer Heart Attack when I first heard the tracks “Nevermore and Lily Of The Valley I wanted them to be much much longer I was sad that they were both short tracks 😀👍
Queen's early music especially on the debut album were really great songs as well as their other 70's albums were my favorites but don't like their 80's music however but this album is really great to hear again thanks again and have a great week Phil.🎶🎤🎸🎸🎹🥁🎶
Thanks Phil :) Made up my mind .. going to pick up the vinyl. Box set would be excellent but dont have the luxury spend at the moment ..It is an alternative .. i can enjoy original and Queen I
First three albums are my top favs as well...when I first heard NATO, I thought..what the H are they DOING??! Where's the rock?! Of course over time grew to love it and the next few. But yeah...LOVE those first 3 albums! And now you've piqued my interest in the cd remaster/remix, Phil...thanks. MIght need to get a copy now. T
A really enjoyable review. Thank you. I 100% agree with your main point that sceptical Queen fans should give the new mix a proper listen - and with an open mind - before condemning it. I am no music expert but I too cannot hear any difference in Freddie's vocals. Yes, there has been plenty of knob-twiddling going on, and I wonder whether Dolby Atmos is also helping us hear things that were previously buried in the mix. The point is: the results are outstanding. The drums, the guitars - the whole thing, in fact, sounds amazing. As you say, it sounds like it was recorded this year, not fifty-plus years ago. Everyone is (rightly) talking about how good Liar is, but what about Jesus (the track!)? It is absolutely immense. Definitely one of Queen's hidden gems. The Sessions CD is indeed fabulous as well, and the previously available De Lane Lea tracks (ie the first demo tape they did) have been cleaned up and sound great. The two tracks from the 1970 Imperial College gig (ie pre-John Deacon) are listenable and a nice addition for the Queen aficionado, but the really big draw on the live tracks CD is Hangman, which has never been officially released before and isn't on that many bootlegs either.
Thanks Phil! Great review. On the plus side, the box and book are top quality and the remix really brings the tracks to new heights without removing their integrity. On the negative side, the price has to be the biggest hurdle. AIso, I think they could have put everything on less cds (especially when the BBC versions have already been released on the 'On Air' box set. I am surprised (and disappointed) that they did not include 'Polar Bear' with Freddie on vocals which circulates in bootleg circles.
I streamed it some days ago and loved it, but I can't justify its purchase either. Enjoy it! I think I agree with your top 3, in these later years, those are the 3 albums that I always go back to and play about once a month
Great video, totally agree about the remix I haven't stopped playing it. I bought the 2 cd version - can't afford the super deluxe box yet, hope it drops in price Also agree if your remix something it needs to different for me to worth the effort. The sessions are very enjoyable as well. Queen 2 is my favourite followed by sheer heart attack then Opera then Queen 1. They were a revelation when to me when I first heard them. For me this is one of the best reissues they done hope this standard continues.
Another great review Phil. Not my favourite Queen album although it’s very good, but I totally see why it’s your favourite. I’ve listened to my original CD this morning, would be interested to see how the 2024 version is as a comparison. Based on your comments, I’m excited to hear it!
I might add, the heaviest metal songs by Queen , from the first four albums would be Old King Rat, Liar, Father to Son, Orgre battle, The Prophet Song, Brighton Rock, Stone Cold . There are two SD-Blurays of Queen live, in DTS high resolution. They amazingly look and sound outstanding. Live at the Rainbow and the Odean .The band was really unknown at the time.
That is a fantastic collection, especially the book. Yes, Liar is the best track. I have an special place in memory for Queen II, but this was the start of a poignant moment in rock history. What evidence has been presented about any A I involvement? Is it just a rumor? I saw them live once in 1978. Have you seen them live? thanks Phil, Cheers, Pat
Thanks for sharing and cheers to your patron ! I’m a bit on the fence on this one but will keep an eye out for a price drop or maybe look at the 2cd version- looks a good book and set - my favourite album is Queen 2 - great band ❤
My first experience of Queen: December 1974 from the lokal shopping centre's record store when I heard some fantastic hard rock. A beautiful girl in her plateau boots dancing just outside the entrance to the store. That together made a big impession and I just had to have this record. So it was Queen's Sheer Heart Attack. After that I bought their first and second album plus every album in the seventies. I still have them all. Queen for me was perfect hard rock together with Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Budgie and more 🤘🏼 About this new Queen's first. It think it sounds better than my old lp and I can't hear anything wrong with Freddy Mercury's song. Queen 1 session is fun to have too.
Sorry phil , i did a bit of research and the venue was the Opera House in Manchester in November 1973. They played at the Palace the following year. I was 16 🥴
I bought the vinyl and I must say it's grown on me. I still prefer the charm of the original overall but there are moments on this remix I prefer. Great review Phil 👏
My first time hearing Queen was Crazy Little Thing called Loved and the first album of theirs that got was the works. I saw them live on The Kind Of Magic tour? I wonder a ranking of Queen box sets would look like? Well done on getting this. You are in the lap of the Gods.
The full collection is on Tidal, that gives me a chance to check out the remaster. Have all their LPs, just bought the whole Queen back catalogue for buttons on eBay on cd, that'll do me!
Fully agree with your comments about the remix, Phil - it's a blast. But that box set is way too expensive. I've therefore gone for the single CD and downloaded the rest from iTunes for £18. Like you, I'm usually 100% for physical formats, but in this instance I see no reason to shell out all that extra moolah for stuff I'm likely to play once or twice only, alongside a book of photos I don't really need. And my Queen Top Three is exactly the same as yours! I hope the same remix treatment will be applied to the second and third albums. After that, I couldn't really care less.
They have used pitch correction on the vocals and other new AI tools maybe , too. But damn the vocals sound sublime ! And Queen's studio albums were always top notch audio productions ! They really were perfectionists in the studio. The only problem I have with it is that the CD's are again mastered a little bit too loud and a bit too much compression that is not necessary.
EMI were renowned for charging the highest retail prices possible for their CD catalogue, particularly when it came to the various Queen remasters over the years - I found the remasters they did around 2011 to be particularly egregious because they released them in double CD formats, charged a double CD price for them, but the second CDs contained only four or five tracks at most that could have all fit onto one CD. Sure, remasters are always worth a listen to, as are any additional tracks and live concert gigs - but when they're charging me £150 for a box set that costs more than a Rory Gallagher box set that contained at least double the number of CDs, and the Rory box set didn't contain "space wasters" like karaoke versions of songs, or studio versions that were left "on the cutting room floor" for the specific reason that they weren't the definitive versions that made the final album cut anyway. It's a bit like me going into my local "fish and chip shop", ordering cod and chips for £12 or so and the server behind the counter asking me "If I throw in these few burnt chips as well, will you pay me £18 instead?" I see this a Virgin release and they're continuing the "mickey taking" over the high retail prices just like EMI did - and whilst I am very happy that someone generous person donated this to you, I get the impression that you yourself would not have bought this had you to fork out your own cash for it, I assume because you also think it's too expensive for what it is.
Hi Terry, I agree that if the name QUEEN is attached to a release then a premium price seems to follow it. That is the reason I did not go with the 2011 remasters. I am very lucky that one of my patrons gifted this to me, your question about would I have paid for it with my own money. The answer is pre-pandemic when I had my business yes I would, now I don't have the budget to spend like that.It is my favourite Queen album and there is no cutting room floor material through my eyes but I can see how others would see that. The instrumental version of the album is not something I will play but many bands seem to include something like this now. I think using the word Karaoke was an error as was mentioning the use of pitch control for any of the vocals. This is a remix and if you don't want the box, you can buy a single CD and if you don't want that the entire thing can be streamed. So uber fans of this album will and have gone for the big box and for other a single CD is enough. Thank you for all your comments and input into what I am trying to do here I do appreciate it. Phil
@@NowSpinningMagazine I hope there are representatives from record companies that read some of the contents on here and take some of our points about how they can sometimes do stuff better. Ultimately I've always been very pro-record companies because ultimately, as the customer, paying a tenner for a CD that I've enjoyed over and over again across 20, 30 or 40 years is good value for money in anyone's language. I just don't want to feel like some of them are "taking the mickey" now. But I think you understand the context in which I make these comments - and most of the time, I'm very happy with the CDs and box sets that I do buy.
I was 17 when I first heard Great King Rat from " a new English group, Queen"" on an import album radio show in Australia way back when. The first 3 albums remain my favourites to this day! The new remix adds punch that was missing from the original mix owing to the budget constraints at time of recording. The remix has received a lot of flack online for various reasons especially the so called pitch correcting of Freddie's voice! I personally cannot hear it. Trust your own ears, it's a great listening experience.
having seen all the reviews i couldnt help myself , i bought a copy of just the vinyl album. against my first thoughts the new mix is brilliant. i have a copy of the very first pressing and a hollywood remastered pressing. it blows them both away in my opinion. but i dont like mad the swine in its running order. possibly because ive played this album to death over the years and quite cant get used to the new track in the running order. it shouldnt have been on. maybe put on as a b side with the single. the box set could have been done better. a karaoke cd FFS. and a couple of live tracks not from the albums era. queen and queen 2 are my favourite albums of the band i absolutely love them and hope queen 2 gets the same treatment. i know it will upset some fans but any other album meh……

You confused remixing and remastering a couple of times. At 12:00 you referred to the CD you listened to as the remaster and then went on to talk about the remix. The Led Zeppelin catalogue has never been remixed, it was only remastered.
When I was 15 I first heard the voice that I still 50 yrs later cannot get enough of ! This band Queen is by far the best rock group ever put together ever!
Hi Phil,I received my copies today,so we are enjoying this together in a sense.Really enjoyed your take on this wonderful record.
This will never sound any better than it does right now with this remix ❤ it's outstanding

Spot on Phil. Hope they do Queen II next!
no next is going to be a box set for a NIGHT AT THE OPERA 50th anniversary next year and BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY will be 50th

Excellent review phil ,thank you ❤️🎸👍
I love the first four Queen albums, and their last Innuendo.

I remember that when I bought the original vinyl record of this Queen debut album that drummer Roger Taylor was then known as Roger Meadows Taylor
Thanks Phil :) Made up my mind .. going to pick up the vinyl. Box set would be excellent but dont have the luxury spend at the moment ..It is an alternative .. i can enjoy original and Queen I

Great review. I have been a long time Queen fan here in the U.S., even when it was not cool to be one. I have this box set now and love it.

Totally agree on the track 'Jesus'
I trust your judgement Phil…..I just might purchase the newly remix Queen 1 cd…..thanks for this Phil…
Best Queen album for me
"Liar" is also my favorite track, brother. Great review.
The order of my favorite Queen albums are,
Queen II
Queen
A Night at the Opera
Sheer Heart Attack
Agree on top 3 albums, but different order for me - Queen 2, Sheer Heart Attack, Queen 1.

I agree re Jimmy Page. His remastering was not up to the standards i expected. Would love remixed versions by say Bernie Grundman
Cheapest NZD$380. As you say Phil, snooze you lose. If I was a big Queen fan I wouldn't take the chance of a drop but that is so expensive, ugh.
Jesus 👑is my favorite.
The CD packaging is great compared with the VdGG Charisma Years box set.
I’ve got the deluxe cd version £24.99 the super deluxe version is a lot of money 💴
