That was a great, comprehensive review. Makes me want to desperately listen to the new mix and compare it to the original. At the same time, the shortcomings you mentioned makes me concerned whether Queen's going to make the same auto-tuning mistakes with other Queen records or no. Because in my opinion, some of those records are almost perfect and exemplary vocal-wise, and therefore need no heavy tweaking on the vocal front. However, the better sound you mentioned in heavy metal tracks like "Modern times ..." makes me excited.
Thanks for the video. Best wishes from Iran.

Absolutely, lots of live releases, not only audio ones, but also we've still got lots of great footage from Queen's tours in the late 70s and early 80s to make for exciting video albums.

I was shocked when "The night comes down" was released as a single. It's clearly the worst remix of the whole album. We all agree that the pitch correction of Mercury absolutely kills all character and realness of the album. But what I really hate even more is the terrible drum sound. They replaced the original drumming with samples that just sound bad and sterile. Just listen to "Doing all right" - Taylor has this unique trademark of slightly opening the hi-hat when hitting the snare which makes the snare even more punchy. They even took that out. I mean, Taylor is one of the only drummers to do this and this has defined his sound. Terrible decision. As usual, this mix has been made to make Taylor and May shine. The bass is mostly turned down, Mercury sounds artificial but guitar and drums are so much in your face that it's obvious what the plan is. I love Queen and I have been listening to their records ever since I was 10 months old (my dad bought the first 4 albums as soon as he heard Bohemian Rhapsody back in 1975) but what May and Taylor keep doing to the legacy of Queen hurts me. I just don't get it. They are sitting on hours and hours of live material from the 70s (their absolute peak) yet all we get is stuff we already have over and over again. Even the deluxe version of QUEEN 1 is mostly reused. Prime example was the "Cool Cat" 7" for the last record store day where they charged you 20 Euros for a released track and on the b-side they put on the instrumental. Great, take away the best part of the song, Mercury's vocals. Sorry for the rant but I'm really angry. Great review and great singing on your part.

Just read a comment having a go at this as being just an opinion and we can all make our minds up - yes we can but I'd rather get some idea of what I may or may not be buying, so thank you for the review. And anyway another RUclipsr has also said very similar things about it.
I know this is a comparison of the vinyl pressing however there are three live tracks on the CD box set that would be nice to have, and had they been on the 2 cd version Id probably have bought it for them, however they're not and I'm not forking out £150 just for them and all the other live stuff I've already got - and who really wants or needs a CD of instrumental versions? Go see the Jethro Tull box sets for how to do a proper job on how to do an archive box set, and also while Steven Wilson is a bit ubiquitous you cant argue with most of his remixes that make the originals sound better without having to alter it.

Some moments (the drum intro to 'Liar', the heavy sections of 'Doing All Right', the solo on 'Great King Rat', all of 'Jesus'...I could go on) are revelatory in their clarity and impact. thanks for your review on this new "remix" version... you nailed it down on all aspects. I really prefer my original Japan pressing and dynamics got further lost more and more over all those remastered releases over the years. and yes, there are mastering mistakes for "my fairy king" and "seven seas of rhye"... this is quite poor and such distortion by mistake is painful and does not respect this epic and iconic album by Queen... even the box is quite nice and the book really is showing impressive insight...why does Queen not celebrate such an 50 anniversary with a decent multi channel release on SACD or blue ray audio, e. g. in Dolby Atmos??? that could have been a valuable release... so I see it more as a nice marketing activity to please Spotify and streaming community with a "cleaner" mainstream sound... Just for the record (sorry😐) and although it is a little off track (shit I’ve done it again😊) there is this idea circulating that Freddie never sang a bum note. I’ve got the feeling that once everyone is dead and gone who saw him live, this will become a fact. As one who saw Queen live many times, I can tell you it’s a long way from being true. Roger did state in the recent Jools Holland interview, subtly introduce the fact that he would often fill in on the higher notes for Freddie when performing live. I do believe that Roger can pitch better than Freddie both in the studio and live. But live, I fairness to Freddie, he’s not sprinting and strutting his stuff all over the stage. Before I’m slaughtered for making this point….. no one gave a shit live anyway. We were all so blown away by the show. I’ve not heard this rerelease of Queen yet but quite aside of the pitch corrected vocals sounding good or bad, I don’t hear anything in there that needs fixing.

    • @top5records796
      @top5records796  25 дней назад

      Interesting point.
I have been a Queen fan for the past 20 years and have been collecting bootlegs for a couple of years. So I listened to a lot of Queen live shows. And also; a lot of unedited Queen live shows.
Mercury is a brilliant vocalist, it is true that the highest notes were sung by Taylor (but that was also pretty much the case on the albums). Thing is though; these are the backing vocals. Mercury always stuck to a strong lead vocal. (It is the same with The Who. Daltrey strong lead, falsetto backings Townshend). They just have harmony’s.
During the Magic tour and The Works tour you can hear Mercury sometimes doesn’t go ‘all the way’ but that is just altering the notes instead of going flat. It is not strange if you take into account the amount of shows, the length of shows, the energy that each and every song demands and the amount of demanding songs. Still concertfilms like Knebworth and Wembley are legendary and I even think that we haven’t heard their technically best shows from that tour (like Leiden ‘86).
Queen has constantly remained a very pure and brilliant live band and never let me down. The amount of shows in which Mercury wasn’t in best shape (like Berlin ‘86 and their Immigrant Song cover) are remarkably low. They were a miracle of live performances.

I am aware that the UK fame is supposed to be the best budget version. However, it depends very much on what you mean by "1st pressing", IMHO. They differ much, depending on the matrix. I only have the German fame pressing, but several early pressings (all considered 1st press) and I highly doubt, that the fame pressing is better than i.e. the Huggypoo pressing (especially the very first one, which is made from the same stampers as the promo. And those are not expensive, (especially compared to the laminated versions around, that now go for insane money, but only have a different sleeve).

Thanks for the video, although you've probably got the best sounding original album's master cut, that is probably the best that album can ever sound due to the so-so recording and mix by Trident/Roy Thomas Baker/John Anthony, not the cutting engineer's fault. Yes a remix was probably a nice idea to try. However the new album is horrible though and a lesson in how not to do a remix (the usual 3 QPL engineers were involved). Dynamics absent, Drums overblown and panned too wide across the soundstage, guitar parts less prominent and cutting (amazingly as Brian May signed this off), John Deacon's bass even more buried and Freddie's vocals also less prominent and pitch-corrected unnecessarily. Little parts like the handclaps on the Liar intro completely turned down whilst the drums are bashing away - poor choices. Freddie and Brian are the main stars of the album and they've been suppressed. Strange. Time to give Giles Martin/Steven Wilson or someone else a chance to do any further remixing (won't happen with QPL though). Queen II and Jazz would have been my next choices but not if they're going to be as disastrous as this.

I'm with you, man. Queen ll is my favorite of theirs and I really like the 2011 remaster of it. When they released Jazz I knew their prog/glam/metal days were over, therefore I really didn't like that album so much. However, with a much better sound I think I'd appreciate it. Hopefully Brian and Roger get the message loud and clear not to screw the next ones they do this badly...fire the guys that made this mess. Steven Wilson, man...if he can do it to Tull, he can do it to Queen.

I listened to the entire album a couple times; I do realize my ears need to adjust to this new mix having heard the original for so many years. If I ignore the pitch corrected vocals and unnatural sounding drums, my biggest gripe is the bass guitar is harder to make out in these mixes compared to the original. The dynamics overall are too even compared to the original which is good at times but missing some moments of impact the original mixes had. If they would have been a bit more diligent/careful I think this could have been a REALLY cool release and may have even trumped the original, but with the flaws I mentioned I will definitely be sticking to the OG. Also, I agree that Jesus has more balls and rocks much better than the original.

Steve Wilson did an excellent job with the Tull records, Crim sounds great, too. The Beatles was outstanding along with Genesis and The Moody Blues. All of those were well worth the money...I've now listened to this Queen remix (having been a huge fan since '75 when I was 12 years old) and I've heard every song on this record at least a thousand times. I don't like it...they didn't do it right. It sounds amateurish...like those first batch of bad remasters they did in the 90s. I think the 2011 clean up of all the early Queen albums is good enough for me. The drums on this record were pretty weak and if they were going to fix anything on this album, that should have been it and it alone, IMO.

Warning: the new mixes may offend😄 Yes they are both imperfect, Queen I done on the cheap and rushed because of Trident management and Queen II suffers from too much going on , too many layers in the mix thus compromising every instrument track making it muddy and weak. Best sounding track on Queen II is Loser In The End, open and decent drum sound.

I think that what most people seem to miss is that the band believe this is how they wanted it to sound. In the days analogue tape degradation of the original voice /note occurs on each copy and not just through signal loss but also through wow and flutter which affects note pitch.
The original album that I still have sounds muddy and indistinct the newer version has clarity. Yes the drums are loud becauae they are a loud instrument and Roger Taylor hit them hard
A quote from Brian stated he hadn't seen anyone hit the drums as hard as Roger... Possibly leading to the issues he has with wrists presently.
