Comparing Joni Mitchell Blue 2024 MoFi One Step to a 1st US OG

Blue is one the most acclaimed albums by Joni Mitchell. It has seen many pressings and earlier this year I did a review of the new Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab One Step pressing on 45 RPM mastered by Krieg Wunderlich. I compared it to several pressings including the recent 33 RPM reissue by Bernie Grundman. Yet; I did not compare it to a original US pressing. This video is to make up for that. So;...

Top 25 Bernie Grundman Mastered Vinyl
I don't think you mentioned it but for Bill Evans Sunday at the Village Vanguard, Kevin Gray also did the recent (and cheaper) OJC version of this. Not a UHQR, but it's a fraction of the price.
Hackney Diamonds at #8. Huh. Was he taking drugs when he listened to it? Was he made loopy by a carbon monoxide leak? No sentient life form could prefer that album to Some Girls.
One of the best albums of 2023. I don’t understand the negativity.
Its actually the only one from the Brilliant Live Series which I still don't own. It is a good recording and maybe get it someday...
Love Dylan's music, but im not a big fan of that album. Apart from as you mention, Must Be Santa, and the accompanying video. I believe all proceeds from the album went to children's charities, so it was hard to argue with that. But yes, his voice was better during the crooner Sinatra phase. Thanks, Stuart.
Nice review But a little mistake. You said There goes my mind. It's Where is my mind. I'm sure that was just a little flub. What a brilliant debut by her. The sound is tremendous. Her lyrics are fascinating and that voice is angelic. She sounds like someone one third her age. She looks great as well. She looks healthy which is important. Finally I'd love to know if that bird is real or animation. It looked so real until it started dancing. The relationship between her and the bird is fascinating. She uses hand gestures which lead me to believe the bird understands and reacts, it has to be animation. If real it's amazing. This is a true masterpuece of an album. It really is diverse with shades of surf, country, punk and pop. I only hope she gets more recognition because the numbers are surprisingly low. Anyway thanks for the review. You nailed it.
I just buy dollar vinyls and find some gems
For me the release of the infamous Adele triple vinyl burst the vinyl bubble. It was the last new album stocked at our local Walmart before CD's and vinyl got phased out of Canadian Walmart's altogether. I myself, a lifelong vinyl collector since the 1970's have definitely have pulled back on new vinyl purchases. The current (bland) music climate and the slumping economy around me have take their toll. although I still love and play the records I already have, that hasn't changed.
I also have both versions 1 step and US OG and sharing your thoughts on the rating. OG is warmer but Joni’s voice on the 1step is simply breathtaking. Funny you mentioned that you did not find an OG in NY/Brooklyn. I been in New York/ Brooklyn early this year and was completely disappointed about the few record shops and their portfolio. Back in the 2000s this was a paradise but probably the rents are too high meanwhile or I simply did not find them. I definitely prefer Amsterdam Antwerpen Hamburg or Berlin.
It's the brand, not the band.
That model box didn't sell well when it was released. That's part of the reason why as I dictate this it's probably worth more like $3,000 for a pristine vinyl edition. Apple has their head up their ass. And it won't be dislodged from there anytime soon.
You're right about that box. If this us mono crap came out like it has. This is absolute garbage. If they think that the nostalgia will be there for this in 8 years it won't! With that format of a 2 LP interview cut and paste. You have a better time using it as your floor mat for when you get out of the shower.
vinyl is a pain in the ass.. Expensive in every way and quality is NOT as great as hyped.
It is more a best of from the Stooges than Iggy pop.
But Iggy Pop is in The Stooges.
That Chateau was a castle near Paris where composer Michel Magne had built a top notch recording studio for that time ( 16 tracks ). Iggy Pop The Idiot, David Bowie Pin Ups, Pink Floyd Obscured by Clouds were all recorded there. Honky Chateau of Elton John was also recorded there. And many other known bands went there to record their albums. I would place "Instinct" instead of The Idiot. Have a nice Sundag greetz Jason
Absolutly Agree, Nick Cave the best of the nineties.....Also I love the Good Son Album
Well that was a trip! I'm glad to see he has enough copys to last a while.😂 I waited in line for record bar to open the morning the album released. I bought the 1st copy they sold at Mars Hill college small town record bar. I recall it sounding very good as well. Now granted, at 9th grade summer school spent on a college dorm, I didnt take a high quality record player with me. But I was well pleased and won't ever forget that experience.
I just played my Rhino Hi-Fi copy of the album in your #1 spot today. The most fun I ever had listening to No Fun, haha. I assume Funhouse is next. I will pre-order that. I actually think my favorite Iggy album is The Idiot. Hearing the original China Girl for the first time blew my mind. Still blows it on every subsequent listen.
4 out of 5 in my collection. Did not expect that. Do have Raw Power in the same edition on Embassy (CBS cheopo sub?) which I like. Did not know that this was the Bowie mix, also have a Canadian Columbia Press (different in dynamics) and the Iggy Danny Kadar 2010 remix (CD here), which is balancing the rwaness into a driving more edgy but at the same time more controlled mix. For me it ever will be my torn and played Embassy copy, as this was my first ever Iggy album at the age of 14. I miss Kill City in the Top 5. And I have to admit I listened a lot to Instinct and Brick by brick in the past. Cheers from Germany Klaus
Turn Blue is a masterpiece
1. Small Change 2. Bone Machine 3. Rain Dogs 4. Heart of Saturday Night 5. Swordfishtrombones
I love this record
Kill City would have to be in my top 5.
I love Kill City as well! I was really struggeling with not putting that in.
Easy for me to make a top 5 list because I only like 5 Rolling Stones albums. 1.sticky fingers 2.steel wheels 3. Tattoo you 4.goats head soup 5.some girls.
Raw Power would be my favourite Iggy album - the Bowie mix, definitely. One of my top five albums of all time. But all Stooges 1960s/70s albums are brilliant- including those of his demos/outtakes and Kill City. Idiot & Lust for Life his two best post-Stooges. He's done a few lame ones too, mind.
He did indeed but he made a lot of strong albums the last couple of years!
By the way the Chateau is in France where Bowie recorded Low ..
Aah interesting!
Of his Stooges releases I would choose Raw Power and of his solo I would go for The Idiot ..Then probably Funhouse and Lust for Life ..
Raw Power as his best album?
@@top5records796 Yeah it's probably one of my very favourite recordings..The Idiot is so good as well..Oh and I definitely think it has to be the Bowie mix of RP over the Iggy remix ..
@@salters that’s interesting! Why do you prefer the Bowie mix?
@@top5records796 Well it's what I had listened to for years before the Iggy remix so you get very used to hearing it sound that way..The Iggy mix I have only heard on CD and found it really tiring to listen too due to everything being turned up to eleven..
My guy. Check out the Rock Machine 1986 UK pressing. It's solid state cut from the master tapes (I think) so no nasty brightness - I think it beats this one and it doesn't cost the earth.
That is interesting! Thanks! I’ll hunt one down and will do a comparison!
Album of the year for me. Nobody hears music and filters music into her own world the way Kim does. I adore her!
I agree with your review. Great album.
Finally, someone that doesn't talk shit about this album, it's pretty good!!
UHQR Dark Side of the Moon yes please . Great show cheers.
Thank you!
Found 2 copies in 2016 in a small record shop in New Hampshire- sadly I only bought 1 , for the original price of around $300 , have never opened it , bought all the albums separately to play
Sorry bro, i have lot of albums of Hotel California, also i have this one from Mofi. And i think you must change your turntable or speakers or all you have got. Because this is the best copy i am heard. Nothing to add here.
Have you heard a 1st US?
Review of the incredible new Cure album?
Honestely; I didn’t care much for that album but also found it hard to find the right words to describe it.
@@top5records796 Really? LOVE the album.
Have you ever heard the Kevin gray master of Electric Warrior? It’s fucking amazing
Arther for me
Best pressing that money can buy imo. It's all subjective though.
Totally agree on the 45rpm Rumours. You don't know Gold Dust Woman till you've heard this press. Also up there for me are AP Dusty in Memphis and CSN Couch. The latter is so much better than the DSD MFSL.
I remember buying Other Voices and not expecting much. I was pleasantly surprised. Not a classic but a pretty good album. So I then bought Full Circle. It even had a folding pullout that you could put on your turntable while album plays. It depicted the evolution of man that it shows on album cover. I didn't think it was a very good album. But now I wish I still had it. Might be worth giving it another chance. As far as corners being cut out on LPs. Here in Canada they were albums that were out of print or did not sell well. We called them "deletes." I occasionally order CDs from a seller in California. They always have a hole drilled or cut in the corner with shrink wrap removed. But they are new CDs, not used. I think he does it save me paying duty as it looks like a used item. This may be the case with your Doors album. BTW great video.
My mom is mexican. She loves the mosquito song. I also love piano bird a lot.
At last someone else who likes this album 😂. I was about 10 or so when i first heard it. Yes, some songs are a tad throwaway but not all. I think it's much better than Other Voices, and Verdillac is one of my fave Doors songs.
This is a very easy record to dismiss out of hand. It's also very easy to point out the faults on it - as there are many. BUT, it has some really great moments! I have always wanted a reissue of this without the vocals as I do think the musicianship is there. Do I think the Doors should have continued after Jim died? Nope. Do I think this is a great album? Nope. Do I think it's a fun listen? Yes. I pop this on about once a year and it always makes me smile. Nice to see you review it! You'll get some sh%% for it though! Haha
I don’t give a rat’s ass whether the “hype” is over not. 😄 I’ve been a collector since the 80s and that isn’t going to change. I’m not a bandwagon jumper. All this goofy hand wringing and brow furrowing is amusing. Trends come and go, everyone knows that, and no one is forced into a business model that involves chasing trends.
I love the band's performance of "Can't Help Thinking About Me". Bowie confessed it wasn't one of his best writing moments, but it is an historic document and the band kicks ass on the tune. Bowie's vocal performance is also very powerful. Sorry you feel it is the weakest link. The track always gets me inspired and moving.
I can’t imagine anything much worse than a double 45rpm DSOTM.
Really? Why?
interesting take.. thanks for sharing.
Writing about the way a record sounds presents some interesting challenges, particularly when writing for an audiophile audience. With no single audiophile system sounding the same as any other, and with each system playing in a completely different room, none of us hears a record sound exactly the same as another. In fact, the differences in how each of us hears even the very same copy of record can vary substantially. Nevertheless, as someone passionate about sharing his experiences in this endlessly fascinating hobby of analog audio, I’m compelled to make my best effort to describe to others what it is that I hear when I play a record on my system. I hope I am at least occasionally successful, but I’ll leave that up to my readers to decide for themselves. As my stereo has improved, and as I’ve been fortunate to find better and better records to play on it, I’m hearing one particular “sound” more and more often. I find myself craving this sound. Every time I hear it, I want to hear more of it. But every time I try to put this sound into words, I can never seem to find them. Perhaps that’s because this sound is, on the surface, so very ordinary. It is the sound of voices and instruments playing in a space, captured by microphones and reproduced without apparent modification or adulteration. It is the sound of music, played by musical artists and played back with a level of fidelity so high as to liberate these musicians and their music from the very medium on which they are preserved. Recorded music that has this sound is almost entirely free of artifice. We don’t listen to it and necessarily think we are hearing a recording. Instead, this sound tricks us into thinking and feeling we are witnessing these artists perform, right there in front of us, as though for us. It is the very pinnacle of what audiophiles mean when they say “the speakers disappeared,”an expression I find more than a little overused. This sound is, in my view, what the analog medium is all about. Regardless of the fact that records do not play quietly the way digital music does, digital music simply cannot convey this sound. It is a sound so pure, so natural and so achingly real that it relegates the surface noise on a record into a barely noticed afterthought. Yesterday I played a copy of Joni Mitchell’s iconic masterpiece, Blue, and I heard this sound. At one point, I wasn’t listening to a record anymore. I heard Joni, in the studio, with Stephen Stills, and with James Taylor. I heard her voice come to life and soar free as though liberated from the confines of the recording she’d made over 50 years ago. Today, I played Mobile Fidelity’s newly released Ultradisc One-Step version of Blue, and I thought it sounded rather good, especially after I got the VTA set right for the thicker vinyl. It did a nice job with the vocals, which is clearly essential for the album. On the wrong vintage copy, or even with a very good copy played back on the wrong system, Joni’s closely mic’d vocals can sound glaring and shrill, particularly on the opening track, “All I Want.” MoFi’s One-Step of Blue mostly handled the vocals well, and it did so pretty much throughout the album, conveying the sweetness and breathiness of Mitchell’s voice and avoiding the glare. The MoFi also did a pretty good job with the piano, an instrument featured on “My Old Man” and a few other tracks. It managed to give the instrument the size and the weight you want to hear from a piano, although I didn’t find it as life-like and musical as I did on the vintage copies I played. For the first few songs, I starting to think I really liked MoFi’s One-Step of Blue. That is, until the fourth track, “Carey,” when the record started to show its true colors. “Carey” features Joni on the Dulcimer, and this instrument reveals the top end boost that MoFi gave this version in a particularly obvious way. Notes that rang pleasantly and clearly in space on the vintage copies sounded aggressive and edgy on the One-Step. And once this boost was revealed on the dulcimer, it became more apparent on the guitars and vocals as well. As I listened, I began to realize that the Joni I was hearing on this One-Step was not the same Joni I was hearing on the vintage copies. The One-Step was mastered by Krieg Wunderlich, and in typical MoFi fashion, Mr. Wunderlich has boosted not just the top end on this version, but also the bottom. In fairness, if there was ever a record that might need just a little more bass, Blue is it. There’s not a lot of bass on this recording, and I can certainly understand anyone remastering it wanting to add some, just to flesh it out a bit. But does that necessarily mean they should add it? Does more bass always equal better sound? On the only track that actually has any real bass on this album, “California,” the bass on the One-Step sounds like the bass on a modern recording - big and weighty, but with a modern studio bloomy deadness that I hear on just about every contemporary jazz recording. The One-Step of Blue, in fact, sounds more like a modern record than it does one recorded back in 1971. It’s as though Wunderlich has mastered the original studio sound right out of it, and in doing so, lost something crucial to what made the recording special to begin with. Blue is an intimate record that lives and breathes in the midrange. Mitchell’s songs are personal, and the way she produced the album serves to place us, the listener, up close to her performance. She invites us in, and this is what makes the sound I spoke of earlier so crucial to this music. For Blue to come to life the way it can, we need not just the vocals and the instruments to sound right, we also need to hear the studio space they’re playing in. That’s the quality that this One-Step lacks and that the best vintage copies have the ability to convey. When the studio space is there, audible in the recording, we have that very special sound I referred to earlier. We have the sound of being right there in the studio with Joni and the other musicians. The One-Step pushes the vocals and most of the instruments forward. It’s a sound I’ve heard on a lot of other modern remastered records. With these records, our listening room must substitute for the studio space, rather than the original studio space being recreated for us in our listening room. It’s a subtle distinction that becomes less and less subtle the more that you hear it. Provided, of course, that your system and the records you play have the ability to show it to you. Not every listener will hear what’s missing from this One-Step. With most modern audiophile systems struggling to reproduce the subtle transients that make a record like Blue so compelling, I’d guess that most will not. I could even see how a lot of audiophiles would prefer this One-Step to even the best vintage copies. After all, it’s hard to find a vintage copy of Blue that plays quietly AND sounds good, and this MoFi checks both those boxes. But make no mistake, something is missing on this MoFi, and it’s not something that can be brought back by playing it on a “better” or more expensive system. Some of the precious life of Blue has been lost in this One-Step, and it simply cannot be resuscitated. The only way to bring that life back is to find a great vintage copy and build a stereo that can play it back well. This is why I recommend finding the best vintage versions of the records we love. They’re the only records that at least have the potential to give us the one thing this One-Step never will - the sound of live musicians playing live in a studio. Vintage records are the only records I’ve ever heard that have “that sound.” Having said all of this, I want to reiterate that MoFi’s One-Step of Blue is not a bad record. To my ears, Wunderlich took a fairly light touch to it. IMO it’s a good sounding record that will make many of the people who spend the $100+ it’ll cost them to buy a copy pretty happy. But this MoFi is not a great sounding record, and for those like myself who know what greatness sounds like, I’ve little doubt we’d grow tired of it pretty quickly. For those of us who own and play records that have the sound I spoke of earlier - that sound!, we want more from a copy of Blue than this One-Step can give us. We want the real Joni, not the one on this MoFi. (by Robert Brook aka The Broken Record)
You can not listen to God is in the house without involuntarily thinking of Hot Fuzz.
Are you sure you love it??? You heap a lot of praise for the original copy and don’t seem all that excited about the One Step Is it the 130 dollar price that’s swaying your decision????
I didn’t buy the One Step ;-), there is something in her voice.
