Just watching the g/f following your videos, it's her first time trying to stitch and she's got the hang of it thanks to your clear instructions. New follower
Seriously, I got a kit as a gift from Brit + Co, but the instructions aren't so kind to beginners! I've watched two videos of yours and they already have been so helpful!
i'm a complete beginner, this is the first cast i learned because i want to make the bunny from your other video! lol took me a few tries, but after watching 10 times over, i've got the hang of it! lol
I am a beginner and am so happy to have found your video's, they are amazing and you are very talented. Thank you for taking the time to share with others. :) This video was really good bc it showed which end the yarn ball was it.
Awesome, Joan Rickman - Seriously, I think casting on is the trickiest part of learning how to knit. Now that you've conquered how to cast on, you can knit ANYTHING! Thanks for watching!
Like, I cannot believe this. This is the EXACT same technique my great grandma used!!! Thank you SO much for teaching me, otherwise I wouldn't be able to teach this to my kids when I grow up. (I'm only 14 at the moment)
To figure out the amount of yarn you will need with this cast on method, wrap the yarn around a pencil for the number of stitches you will require for your project. I like this method because it is fairly accurate for what you will need. Happy knitting!!
This is helpful because I must have missed it in the video where you are told why you need a really long tail. Suddenly the tail is at the end and I haven't cast on the number of stitches needed so had to start over. Thank you!!!!
up up up and done! As silly as it is, when you said that and I actually got it correct.... I was very excited. I've just started knitting... As of this video lol. I've subscribed and can't wait to see what other videos you have.... As I went crazy and bought some 1k yards of yarn lol.
Hello! I'm loving all of your videos. I'm a very new knitter and after watching the seed stitch video I had a few questions. I know how to cast on but what do you mean about casting on in multiples of two? For the seed stitch, does that mean casting on in a purl then knit pattern?
This is the method I use. But when I start my first row of knitting or purling onto the caston chain, I have a lot of slack. How can I explain this.... each knit, the string between the needles get longer, like there isn' enough tension. Am I doing something wrong? I know there is another cast on method, but can't seem to find it.
Great idea, Jess C - I will put that on my list. In the meantime, my two hat videos give some insight into knitting in the round. Hope they help! ruclips.net/video/92rYv3Birdg/видео.html & ruclips.net/video/tfNjQFhFFfI/видео.html
You probably figured it out by now. I'm going to suggest the Thumb Long Tail CO. Much easier than this, Sling Shoot, method. I did the thumb method for years before I pulled the sling shoot method. Even some knitting celebrities like Staci Perry, and Vicki Howell do the thumb LT CO in their videos...
Woo Hoo! So happy you stuck with it! It took me a long time to wrap my head around it... and I needed to be reminded a few times afterward, too. Congrats!
An easy way to have the correct length of yarn for long tail cast on is... Take your yarn tie the two ends together. Bow decide which end will be your working end and cut the other. This eliviates too short of cast on tail Hope this hels
Hi, D' Gypsy, and thanks for watching. I find that you just sort of get a 'feel' for how long to make your tail. As a general rule, make it about a quarter inch per stitch you will cast on. So, if you're casting on 20 stitches, that would be about 5 inches. Hope this helps!
I just make a loop from my working yarn and then put my needle through the loop and then just pull on the tail of my working yarn. TA DA!!! You've just casted on your second stitch!!
My hands literally are incapable of holding the yarn like that, and also I just plain don't understand this video. I've watched it so many times but I get lost every single time.
How do you hold that yarn between your two weakest fingers on your NON dominant hand??? are you left handed trying to show ppl how to do it that are right handed? Most ppl that are right handed can NO way hold that string so taut in their left hand. All it does is slip out of my fingers. Then I get cramps for holding my fingers so tight trying to hold on to the damn string! I think it is time to look at other ppl's tutorials.........grrrrrrrrrrrrrr........I have tried 10 times now. Am I the only lame person trying her technique?
THANK YOU for doing a video of long-tail cast-onthat is short, sweet and MAKES SENSE. Everyone else makes it so difficult to follow. This was perfect!
Wonderful to hear 🧶💖

Great, easy to follow instructions for a beginner like me. Thanks! And, you hold your yarn the same way that I do.
Ha, awesome, Karen! Glad my videos are helpful as you learn to knit!!!
When you say 'scoop from the left and up, up, up and done' reminds me of Ruby from Max and Ruby :) all good
Like, I cannot believe this. This is the EXACT same technique my great grandma used!!! Thank you SO much for teaching me, otherwise I wouldn't be able to teach this to my kids when I grow up. (I'm only 14 at the moment)

I am a new knitter, and I love this cast on method, and this tutorial! I feel like you have changed my world! Now to knit a brain hat ^_^

I was just scrolling through the comments to see if anyone answered this question. Thanks!
+Robin Tyler Saunter This was very helpful. Thank you. I always would have way too long of a tail or way too short.
This is helpful because I must have missed it in the video where you are told why you need a really long tail. Suddenly the tail is at the end and I haven't cast on the number of stitches needed so had to start over. Thank you!!!!
Thankyou, I had forgotten how to do this… your comment about how to find the tail length is most
helpful:))😊❤
it works best if you use your knitting needle, not a pencil 😊
When you cast on this way and are counting the stitches for a project do you count the slipknot as one cast on stitch?
up up up and done! As silly as it is, when you said that and I actually got it correct.... I was very excited. I've just started knitting... As of this video lol. I've subscribed and can't wait to see what other videos you have.... As I went crazy and bought some 1k yards of yarn lol.
Haha, love it and congrats on casting on. Everything else will be easy for you. That's the hardest part!!
well you videos are good

Hi Kristen! Thanks so much. It just means to cast on as many stitches as you would like, 2 at a time. So, any even number of stitches works!!
Exactly what I was looking for. Can this be used to make fingerless gloves?
Thanks, sueluvu - Yes, this is a standard cast-on technique for making most all knitting projects.
do you have a guide for how long to make your tail based on number of stitches you want to cast on?
Thnx soooooooo much! Actually I crochet but yur vid was fab!
Thanks so much Aiyana!!
Thank you!

Can you do a video on how to knit in the round? Please cause I've got my first pair of dpns
Great idea, Jess C - I will put that on my list. In the meantime, my two hat videos give some insight into knitting in the round. Hope they help! ruclips.net/video/92rYv3Birdg/видео.html & ruclips.net/video/tfNjQFhFFfI/видео.html
what do you do at the end with the extra string
Yay I did it!
I. Just. Can't. Get. This. Stitch. To. Work. Your video is so clear and easy to follow, but I can't get this to work D:
pause it a lot. thats what I did.
You probably figured it out by now. I'm going to suggest the Thumb Long Tail CO. Much easier than this, Sling Shoot, method. I did the thumb method for years before I pulled the sling shoot method. I am just the same. I do the other method of cast on too!!
I GOT IT (after, like, my 7th viewing lol). PRAISE BE AND THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO :D
Woo Hoo! So happy you stuck with it! It took me a long time to wrap my head around it... and I needed to be reminded a few times afterward, too. Congrats!
Can you please let me know about the needle type u r using in the video
Hello! +Vaishu Renghanatan - I'm using bamboo needles, size 7US. Hope that helps!
An easy way to have the correct length of yarn for long tail cast on is...
Take your yarn tie the two ends together. Bow decide which end will be your working end and cut the other.
This eliviates too short of cast on tail
Hope this hels
You didn't mention how much of the "tail" end you would need to make to cast on the appropriate amount of stitches. Any suggestion/instruction?
Hi, D' Gypsy, and thanks for watching. I find that you just sort of get a 'feel' for how long to make your tail. As a general rule, make it about a quarter inch per stitch you will cast on. So, if you're casting on 20 stitches, that would be about 5 inches. Hope this helps!
Is the cast-on row counted as the first row of your project?
What do I do with the tail after all my stitches are cast on?
+jtomlin622 Weave it in!
My fingers are tiny and the yarn keeps slipping between my grasp ;;
I just make a loop from my working yarn and then put my needle through the loop and then just pull on the tail of my working yarn. TA DA!!! You've just casted on your second stitch!!
HOORAY!
I was all like Yes I did a thing!!! but then I forgot how to do it....
+BaBaCinnamon Ha, yes, that can happen... thank goodness for RUclips to remind us how to do cool stuff!
(For Beginners) If I can't follow this what am I?
My hands literally are incapable of holding the yarn like that, and also I just plain don't understand this video. I've watched it so many times but I get lost every single time.
😢so hard!!!!
