S2/E14; How To Fit 1 Yacht + 5 Barges In 1 Lock, the Dutch way

This is part 6 of the SPRING IS IN THE AIR Tour by MV Lady Liselot.
In part 5 of this tour, I left Hellevoetsluis in the morning and made a stopover at the mooring place of the recreational lock of the Volkerak locks. The Jachtsluis will be closed until the end of March 2022 due to renovation, and the few yachts that have to be locked then go with the inland vessels.
There are still quite a few boat people who find such a lock exciting, and the chance that something goes wrong is always present. There are even locks where the public sits on folding chairs in the summer waiting for disaster. They are regularly served at their beck and call. Despite the fact that things sometimes go wrong when locking yachts, I have the feeling that this process goes faster than with the professionals. I moored at the jetty of the yacht lock for a few hours and spent a few hours on my administration. That is now ready, so we can continue our journey.
When I'm finally the last one to go in, the 'neighbour' puts the screw on the moment I'm between the doors. A small tap from Lady Liselot's wood and the inner sluice gate is the result. boink.

But when I have a little more time (as you have seen), then I will prepare some real food. But also then, it is quite simple. A friend of mine loves to cook, but I have never invited on board, because I am afraid that the food I prepare is to simple. mmmm Now you now my weak spot.

Good morning Henk-Jan. You hit another home run with Part 6 and the Cornelissen video footage at the beginning was a superb way to set the stage for your trip through the locks. I loved everything about this week’s video, particularly your disciplined approach to adhering to the rules. You get high marks all around! You’re an inspiration to this armchair traveler who can’t wait to get back to visiting Europe later this year. All the best. Dan

    • @MVLadyLiselot
      @MVLadyLiselot  2 года назад

Hi Dan, Going through the lock is always fun. In the season the yacht locks are very popular. It regularly happens that when you enter a lock, people sit on the side in folding chairs and watch how things are going in the lock. And they are served at their beck and call, because of course things regularly go wrong. At many locks it is forbidden to sit along the edge, but a number of locks in the Netherlands are located in the middle of a village and often there are also all kinds of restaurants around it. It is less interesting in a lock for inland vessels.

    • @dancarroll6349

@@MVLadyLiselot I’m not surprised the locks serve as entertainment for the locals during the summer months. I hadn’t thought about watching the boat/barge traffic going through the locks, but it reminds me of the Hamilton’s driving MV Dirona (a 52’ Nordhavn trawler) across the Crinan Canal northwest of Glasgow 4 years ago (the trip is on their channel). I have old memories of riding a canal boat on the Forth and Clyde and the Union Canals between Edinburgh and Glasgow a few years ago. I absolutely loved the serenity on the canals and especially loved it when we docked on the Falkirk Wheel (the rotating boat lift in Tamfourhill). The wheel lifts/lowers the boats 24 mètres and two additional locks raise/lower the boats another 11 mètres to join the Union Canal. It’s quite impressive and is a big attraction during the Spring and Summer months for locals and tourists.

When the boat has a middle bollard, one can moore the boat with just one line on that bollard. The boat will move a little (20-30cm) but that's all. Once you know the difference between both sides of the lock, you can give that much of slack. On the other hand in a lock I never tie the boat as I would do in the harbour, I always keep a lose end and not a knot.

Did you want your fenders on the Port side? I suggest that some of these barge coxswains can be pretty rude. I don't believe he put out a breast line and just wanted to use his forespring to hold him up to the wall? Was he a foreigner? :)

Yes the barge was from Luxembourg, and I guess that he tought I had passed so he could use his prop again, despite the fact that the operator had asked (off camera) to switch it off all the time.

Henk, sir, why did you shut down your engines and thrusters? I’m not questioning your seamanship at all, I’m just curious.

Lock rule: "Switch off your engines when moored". It often happens that the exhaust fumes get stuck in a sluice between the walls. And to let the engines run for 15 to 30 minutes is not wise.

I switch off the engine in small locks that handle recreational traffic. In big locks like this one I never switch the engine off. It is big and windy enough for the exhaust fumes to dissipate. And more importantly... there's always the possibility that one of the big barges in front of us uses his propellor for some reason. If that happens, and the engine was shut down, we'd be hanging on the ropes for dear life to keep our boat steady. Big barges easily displace 1000 ton or more while our boat only weighs 12 ton.
