S2/E20; Business and Pleasure combined between two locks in The Netherlands

  • English: (Nederlandse ondertiteling hieronder)
    This is part 12 of the SPRING IS IN THE AIR Tour by MV Lady Liselot.
    Because I collect so much film material per boat trip, I can quickly make a video over a 1.5 to 2 hour trip. As in this case, where I sail from the Grevelingen lock to the Krammer lock. In the meantime, I also pat attention on my business. So enjoy optimally.
    Nederlands:

    I really like that you show the actual boating, including logistics of finding a place to dock, handling lines, radio communication with bridge coordinators, other vessels, etc.
    Very interesting to watch, for me also relaxing. I would probably need boating, as well 🙂

      The format of my channel is "Join Henk-Jan when he explores The Netherlands with Lady Liselot". So the channel is more about sailing, than boat tours, showing my day to day life (others can do that way better) or doing the laundry. ;-) The setup of the camera's is ready for 'driving the boat', so that's what I share.

    Hi Henk - Jan, very informative commentary on this great video on your shared journey with us out here in internet land and a interesting journey it is too. I hear you say Rudder in neutral, the correct term in seafaring English language is helm (rudder) amidships or midships the helm (rudder) but I understand the way you say it, being an old seafarer myself many years ago we understood a lot of different maritime sayings and helm orders. Wonderful video mate and I am looking forward to the next part of your shared journey. Cheers from Tasmania.

    Good morning Henk-Jan! Loved watching you masterfully maneuver Lady Liselot, especially when docking behind the Beaufort. Those barge engines are mighty powerful and if you get too close when the props are turning, it could ruin your day! The deck hand on the Beaufort watched you tie up near her stern in the lock. He looked intently and was probably thinking that Lady Liselot’s skipper knows what he’s doing and wisely asked the Beaufort to stop her props! Seven camera’s to make one video while solo cruising explains why it takes 14 hours to produce this video. I appreciate your professionalism and thoughtfulness applied to the production of each and every one of your videos Henk-Jan!

    • @MVLadyLiselot
      @MVLadyLiselot  2 года назад +1

      Hey Dan! Funny detail: it was not the deck hand, it was the skipper himself. The deck hand wore a yellow jacket (a couple of second earlier in the vdo) so that he can be seen from far whilst maneouvring. Safety. From the last time with the inland barges I learned to add an extra fender on the bow. That helped for sure when we had the 'touchdown'. I did not push the boat, It happened by the wash in the water that was still there.

    • @dancarroll6349
      @dancarroll6349 2 года назад +1

      @@MVLadyLiselot The skipper watching over your docking maneuvers was probably hoping that neither boat came into contact and he most likely knew from experience the downside risks to smaller boats dealing with the prop wash inside the lock. Little did he know, Lady Liselot‘s shipper was very competent and safety minded.
      Some years ago I was transiting the Panama Canal heading to Columbia. I watched a number of smaller boats trying to moor aft of a cruise ship inside the locks. Scary times for a small sail boat owner who crashed the bow of his sailboat into the lock wall and unfortunately didn’t have enough fenders out to protect the hull! I never heard about the results. That’s almost as bad as colliding with a submerged shipping container in open water that fell off a cargo ship during a storm! You’re comment about safety is spot on!

      Dank je Bram. Ik realiseerde mij dat een beetje schroefwater van Beaufort, mij zomaar tegen het deurtje achter mij zou kunnen zetten, dus dat 'springetje' voorop was een handige oplossing. Je ziet dat de schipper van Beaufort, het op z'n gemakje gadeslaat..

      @@1starshot Years ago I lived on a sailing ketch cutter (go see my intro video on my channel page) which was 10.85m long. I have only one body to lay down, and one butt to sit. I wanted a good bed (for two, in case of fun time), a good shower, a place to cook and to sit, and the rest was 2nd prio. I lived on that boat form 5 years. Bought and sold her for around € 65k at that time. I know people who live on that same footprint with two and have paid half that price. So price is an issue, but it cannot not the reason not to switch a house for a boat. One need a good place to sleep, a good shower and a chair to sit on. These ar te basics. If any boat meet those requirements, that's the liveaboard boat. Others need luxurious setting, so they need to spend more money. As an investor in I would say: keep the house, rent it out and go live on a boat.
      Where do you live, Paul?

    • @1starshot
      @1starshot 2 года назад +1

      @@MVLadyLiselot I've considered keeping the house & renting it out but as a former property manager I know that there is a big problem in UK now with getting the rent paid & tenants abusing the property. I've had friends who bought 2nd properties on my recommendation as investments & to rent out & they had nothing but constant trouble, rent not paid, 6 months & a lot of lawyers, bailiffs & court fees to evict them, they lost money, so I'm probably not going to go down that road. I do have shares in another property that will most likely be sold in the next few years & I'm thinking of using that money to buy a liveaboard. I don't really want to spend more than £100K. I've considered a canal narrow boat but that limits you to inland waters & I'd like to be able to use the oceans similar to you. I live in England.

    • @MVLadyLiselot
      @MVLadyLiselot  2 года назад +1

      Jeeezzz, @@1starshot I saw some TV shows years ago about those tenants in the UK, and would have thought that's over now. I am lucky that we only see those actions in the low rent area and even then it's 1 on 10.000 I think. The 100k is a good way to start. Deduct 20k for repairs and new stauff. It always happens and it always is way more expensive than one thinks. So buy a boat for 80k and add/change/ repair the things you want. Keep an eye on the engines. In my search I have seen Marine Trader with 800hp Catepillars asking for 20/30/4- gallons per hour. Per engine. Build in the time were diesel was as cheap as water. I see a lot liveaboards, really only liveaboard. In that case the fuel consumption is not an issue, but if you wanna go out and explore, it's a thing. The boat I had before was a sailing cutter. Sailing is an expensive way to get somewhere cheap, I once heard. And I think a sailingboat is more camping that a motorboat. But, I am spoiled, and when a sailing boat is the only things that brings me to Greece, than I am willing to camp. ;-)
      So make list if wishes and must haves, and take a year to find the boat that checks most boxes. Do not wear 'pink glasses' and fall in love with every boat you see, but let the facts and figures of the wish and must-have list, do the talking. Good Luck!

      Je houdt het aantal parts van deze tour precies in de gaten, Hans! From the last time with the inland barges I learned to add an extra fender on the bow. That helped for sure when we had the 'touchdown'. I did not push the boat, It happened by the wash in the water that was still there.

    Great video as always. Would be interresting to see you handle the boat and the lines inside the lock, singlehanded. Surely we can all learn from that.

    • @MVLadyLiselot
      @MVLadyLiselot  2 года назад

      I almost always only use 1 line in a lock and that is the one on the middle bollard. When the water rises or falls, you simply let it go, and if the distance between the bollard of the ship and the lock becomes too great, you take it over. There is always plenty of time for that. In the Netherlands I have not yet experienced that they let the water run in or out of the lock like a waterfall, so it's easy to 'transfer' a bollard.

    Interesting that you cruise at 1400 revs and more. We used to cruise at sea in a 140 tonne trawler-yacht with two 450hp Cats turning at 1200rpm; we then averaged 10 knots. Oh, and don't forget, the important thing about a French National tricolour ensign is "Blue at the staff". When that's reversed, with red at the staff it becomes International signal flag "T". Just a bit of trivia for your viewers.

    • @MVLadyLiselot

      No idea what the similarity is in RPM and speed. It is probably in the gearbox and perhaps also in the number of blades that the propeller has. I can run a maximum of 2300 RPM, and from 2150 RPM I do not sail faster than 15 km/h because I am already at the maximum boat speed. I did not know that from the flag.

    On the face of it the commercial traffic seems to tolerate the pleasure/leisure craft. Is that generally true or are you considered a pain in the arse?

    • @MVLadyLiselot
      @MVLadyLiselot  2 года назад

      Well Bob, if you knew me better you would not ask, and know it's the latter. HAHAHA The tension between recreational and commercial is there all the time. Mostly because of the skippers if the smaller crafts who only look forward, and not backwards (even with a boat of my size I see that happen all the time) and in recent weeks, it has already happened a number of times that a large ship has collided with a pleasure craft because the pleasure craft did not look back and ended up in the so-called blind spot of the large ship. The latter does not even realize that there is a boat in front of him, with all the consequences that entails.
      The tension that exists among professional skippers is therefore one of safety, because the pleasure craft behave very clumsily and unprofessionally. From movies I understand that in America you can continue to drive on the road section you are driving on. In Europe you should drive on the right as much as possible. Overtaking>? Fine, but drive on the right. There are a lot of people who drive 'nice' on the 2nd or even 3rd lane. At a snail's pace. It's awful to see. Those people don't drive a car, they transport themselves from A to B.

    • @bobbutcher7725
      @bobbutcher7725 2 года назад

      @@MVLadyLiselot On the 3/4 lane motorways in the UK it is a topic of a great deal of debate, opinion and anger. My understanding is you keep to the nearside as much as you can, only moving out to overtake. On the water the international code is you pass port to port is it not? Given the commercial traffic are under time schedules and time means money I would have naturally thought they would take precedence. Like you, if I were in a pleasure craft I would keep a very good eye on what was thundering up behind me.

Ik woon nu in San Sebastian en daar heb ik natuurlijk best wel wat water voor de deur. Maar ik vraag me af wat je hier met een boot kunt doen, behalve telkens even een paar km uitvaren.
