There was a full size seated cabinet of this in my home town for many years. Wheel, pedals and hi-lo gear shifter. Used to play on it loads during the early and mid 90s. It was my favourite game before the full 3D generation of arcade machines started arriving, Ridge Racer turned up and that ended this for me. The arcade over the street had one of the extremely rare full scale Ridge Racer setups, meaning a real Mazda MX5 parked inside you got into behind a massive screen projector. I loved playing in it, but it was very expensive so most of my money went in the usual machines...
Those signs on the road. *Pizza House - Homemade* *Pumpkin Cafe - 24 HR Service* *Taittinyr Wines🍷* and *Welcome to Monaco* with a Bunny Girl Not a sign of (possibly) real advertisement, but they have different color palettes in multiple countries make things interesting.
I feel that Continental Circus looks alot like a more advanced Pole Position from Namco, since your formula car catches fires if it collides with other cars and explodes if you don't pit soon enough. And these swift turns!
Very impressive run! Btw. if not mentioned - press accelerator pedal on first light, release it at second light and press again on green light and you get much faster start. If done correctly, only 1-2 cars overtakes you and you pass them very soon. Edit: When speed is yellow (or red in over 400km/h) - your car will bounce several times on collision before it explodes. I think the only place to get over 400km/h is on the first race before finish line. I used to collide on purpose just before the course end to see my car explode after finish line :)
I played this game in the arcades so many times, I never imagined becoming a Formula One fan at any point. My only complaint is that "America" uses the layout for Watkins Glen when the American race in 1987 was in Detroit, and "Mexico" uses the circuit layout of Long Beach.
Good effort, but not quite carling. Used to play it on Taito Legends with handwheel - remarkable experience! First well-deserved title since Hakkinen back in 1999.
Of course the driver would be based on Satoru Nakajima being Japanese and all. Love the "Cameo" livery instead of "Camel" or "Lotus" for that fact. All the same, would live to get my hands on this game and driving cabinet. Also the Final Lap series particularly 3 and R
Not to mention, this game adds the classic "Arkanoid final boss penalty". If you fail to place above 3rd place, that's an automatic game over, no continues.
Many Taito games has the "No continues penalty" in the final stage: -Rainbow Islands: Failing to get the big "CONTINUE" book in the island 7 secret room, you're not allowed to continue in the 3 secret islands (8, 9 and 10 (Final)). -Top Speed/Full Throttle: Running out of time in the first and final stage, you'll get an instant Game Over (even the continue option is enabled). -S.C.I. (Special Criminal Investigation): Running out of time in the final stage and it's an instant Game Over (and the game will trigger the bad ending). -Rambo III: In the prototype version, running out of your health in the final wave of the final stage. You aren't allowed to continue, GAME OVER! -The FairyLand Story: Losing your last life in the first 7 levels and in the final 3 levels, you're get a Game Over and you can't continue. -Darius: Losing your last life in the final zone (such Z), you'll get an instant Game Over and you can't continue (and the 2nd player join-in is disabled).
I've heard of it, I used to play it all the time at a local skating rink. And just for a slight correction, Namco made Final Lap, and it was actually meant to be Pole Position 3.
I remember this game having in some version a LCD visor that enabled you to see it in 3D (screen was showing alternately left and right eye vision and the LCD screen was flickering in reverse so that it looked decently tridimensional) that was switchable off by pressing the start button.
WHOA! That's cutting it close! If it hadn't been for the momentum carrying your car to the finish, it would have been GAME OVER just a few hundred feet away.
actually the game is really called Continental CIRCUIT but the japananese programers had a bit of a mix up or they dont say the letter T very good, lookit up on klov itts a nice bit of trivia the outside of the arcade cabinet says circuit but the title screen says circus lol
I used to play that game nearly every day back in the early 90's. high score was over 6. when they closed the place I should have bought the thing. i saw another one time in Myrtle Beach and I've never seen one again. I miss it. it was a cool game that much enjoyment for a quarter.I wonder if I could find it for my phone or tablet.
Very cool. Unfortunately, the game is not available for mobile devices. But you *can* pick it up for your PS2 and/or the original XBOX in the game "Taito Legends," which is a compilation of tons of old arcade favorites.
This was Taito's answer to Namco's Pole Position. One wonders if there was a version of this game made for the full-motion IDYA arcade system (also from Taito).
Taito is good rival versus Namco. inspired from "Thunder Ceptor II" by Namco,1986 both 3D-glass using virtual reality arcade game...and then 3D polygon arcade game of Taito's "Top Landing" inspired from "Winning Run" by Namco,1988.
Atari's 'Final Lap' was king of the arcade race driving games in this era (.late 80's). Not too many people played this if they had Final Lap. Although it looks nice.
Trying this out on retropie, wish I could figure out why my car will not go over 265mph? ...and yes I'm shifted into high, and holding down some kind of boost button.
The Monaco GP race course is the toughest part of this F1 race arcade game. At least 2 scary snake turns and difficult curving banks face you--you don't master it---you go way off course or crash!!!!
those sounds are once again gonna be heard my friend, we are opening a pizzeria/retro arcade and this will be on of the awesome games featured check us out on facebook -Tech-Noir Pizza+Arcade

16 minutes of fun for just 1 coin. Those were the times...
only if you're a pro tho xD if you suck like me, oh boy... where's all mah pocket money?
Vojta Kuščák - Even more so if you ran out of time at the last race. “I can’t use continues here!?”
Check my run it want bad ...just beat my record and scored 7.2 mill shame i didn't record it

You could do the same by flipping the gear from low to high and back again really quickly on green light.
In mame there are 3 buttons, low, mid and high speed? That’s all? should i only use high speed button?
When I was in kindergarten I used to play a few arcade games by Taito. Continental Circus, Operation Wold and Rastan! Great games!
"Gentlemen, start your engines! 30 seconds before the start..."
They should have said "3 seconds before the start....instead!"
"Excuse me announcer if I wait 30 seconds, wouldnt I get time out by now?"
This was one of the very first efforts by the legendary Team Zuntata.
I played this game in the arcades so many times, I never imagined becoming a Formula One fan at any point.

[insert pun about Long Beach here]
GOFLuvr Yeah, Mexico was a track is based on the Long Beach F1 layout in 1970's.
Good effort, but not quite carling. Used to play it on Taito Legends with handwheel - remarkable experience! First well-deserved title since Hakkinen back in 1999.

+Michael Hindmarsh this was made the same year senna was on lotus as well
This is the one I look foward to most on Taito Legends.
I have it now. Totally awesome. Maybe even better than Pole Position. It's better on a technical level.
List of circuits :
Autódromo Internacional Nelson Piquet
Watkins Glen
Dijon-Prenois
Monte-Carlo
Hockeneim
Jarama
Mexico
Suzuka
Mexico's layout is actually based on Long Beach, somehow.
@@FMecha Yeah I noticed.
YES i remember this little gem!!!!! one thing though, am i the only person noticing that the car is at a slight angle to the "camera"?
Although I probably won't be able to see it myself I'm glad people are keeping arcade scenes alive, I wish you luck! =)
You can have access to it now on PC,there are many emulators for retro games
Continental Circus would have been ported to the Super NES back then, but it's still a pretty intense game!

Always remember that engine sound, used to hear it a lot in arcades back in the day ... glorious times
WHOA! That's cutting it close! If it hadn't been for the momentum carrying your car to the finish, it would have been GAME OVER just a few hundred feet away.
retrogaming is a traditional holiday experience for me too :)
@DragonBallZLiviu This is called Continental Circus! It is, by far, WAAAAAY better than F-1 Race (NES/Famicom) and Pole Position, COMBINED! X3
actually the game is really called Continental CIRCUIT but the japananese programers had a bit of a mix up or they dont say the letter T very good, lookit up on klov itts a nice bit of trivia the outside of the arcade cabinet says circuit but the title screen says circus lol
I guess this should be an abbreviation for "circuit"
Time limts at the end just as hard as Lotus Turbo Challenge's.
Indeed

Or play on your PC if you have, you can find on the internet the necessary emulators to run this game
Wow ! That was so close, you won the last race with almost the out of fuel.
I play this all the time of late.
Loved the arcade on holiday
a wee trip down memory lane.
This was Taito's answer to Namco's Pole Position. One wonders if there was a version of this game made for the full-motion IDYA arcade system (also from Taito).
Luis Reyes Final Lap came out the same year. Took it a step further with multiplayer
I heard of cutting it close but those two were crazy.
Brought to you by CAMEL cigarettes.
I'm going to fall in love with this. Cant wait to get it for Xbox "taito legends disc"
Loved it when 2 other cars hit each other and span off. 2 free ranks!
When It Says "Pit In, Change Your Tires". Do It!
Soon I will speedrun this game and you will discover that it won't be necessary
No need and on the tracks where you hit a car do not pit...the rain stops the car from catching fire
I researched course no.7 Mexico, and it turns out, that this track is the Long beach street circuit, which is in California, USA, not Mexico.

I never knew about this game...
Happy Ending at 15:00.

Sponsored by Camel Ciggarettes.
Im surprised he got the win!
Mind blowing game in the 80s

384 kph - that is roughly 220 or so miles per hour! (I know a little bit of the metric system - 320 kph is 200 mph, and 160 kph is 100 mph. )
Pour le départ turbo il fallait mettre la 2 e puis la 1ère juste au feu vert.
12:34 Almost 400KMH
That is approximately 245 miles per hour!!
Is not have a Casio triangle in Suzuka.
Great game, but without cheats is REALLY hard to beat it.
Buen vidio bro ❤
this is great, im getting the atari st version first tho, looks really hard.
update: got the arcade instead, and, it was easier than expected.
*facepalm* at course 3
I will post a video once we are open
I have this exact game on Xbox. It’s not easy but is a lot of fun.
13:04 Batman
N・ピケ?A・セナ?中嶋悟?
How come course number 3 looks like a middle finger lmao
i have this on PS2 finally crashed through the 7 million barrier in 2018
UPDATE smashed my record 2 weeks ago 7.2 mill
for 1987 it looks just like Crysis in its years
Was it supposed to be Circuit instead of Circus?
It's less impressive to see this on 30fps
Entire female characters on Continental Circus are just wearing white heels and one-piece tanksuit instead of bikini.
Parece um jogo de Fórmula 1
those sounds are once again gonna be heard my friend, we are opening a pizzeria/retro arcade and this will be on of the awesome games featured check us out on facebook -Tech-Noir Pizza+Arcade
Why is it so sloooooooow the first 10 sexonds?
Because he isn't shifting into low gear. He's stuck in high gear for some reason
Yes, i see now. This is one of my fave games ever
モナコを忠実に再現したゲームはないかな?ヘアピンがゆるすぎるよね。
Definitely one of those worse looking racers of the time. Reminds me a lot of NES F1 Championship though, and that's mah childhood
