Brian I love your channel hence why I’ve been subscribed to you for a long time. Now I admit I’ve crashed some planes it is part of the hobby, but people come to you to learn about the hobby. Your recommendations, thoughts, opinions are important. The issue is that you’re always pushing your batteries beyond what they are manufactured to do, and those bad habits are perceived by the new pilots, which can bite them in the ass. Remember you are sponsored by companies that provide you products at no cost, however some people can only afford one or two planes at most. Just my two respectful cents of course. Keep up the good work sir.
Firstly, thanks for being here with us, and for a long time too.
I *think* we get it!
Losing a plane like this would be a HUGE issue, if we weren't in the position we're in, but you have to remember, we've been there too! I would behave differently if this was my only plane, but I'd also suggest nobody have this as their only plane. Also, we kinda have to "push it" to show these planes at their BEST, and sometimes beyond, but also, we're subjected to the same issues everyone else has, i.e. when a packs that die 10% quicker than we expected, but admittedly, this too is a factor that I COULD have caught, if I were flying this plane more, and not reviewing another 50-100 planes SINCE we got it. Most people will have TIME to nurture a plane like this, and to really refine the timers, and the tolerances of throttle management.
To be honest, this pack (5000mAh 6S 100C Gen2 or Gen1) might have lived a long and terrible life, BUT I pointed that out in the video. Also, keep in mind, I have personally paid for HUNDREDS of lipos, and not every one was sent for review. We were blowing through $10,000 - 15,000 per year, or more, for many years before we got our first "free" plane, which is what we've always shared, so not sure what that has to do with anything. We show the products as we would use them, and sometimes we used them to DEATH...like many other RC enthusiasts, but admittedly, the HIGHER consequence planes (like this one) tend to still make me nervous. Also, many RC enthusiasts have much wider and longer runways, with clearer paths from which to final. This again, is MY choice, and not an "excuse" but it is what we face, and it's the SAME for most of the planes we review, which is why we do it this way - it gives YOU and the audience, a basis for comparison.
I agree that we need to be fair and honest about showcasing these items, IF and when we share them in unrealistic situations, but we go to GREAT lengths to qualify much of what we do, and assume you'd be seeing this as you watch.
P.S. If you can't afford to crash a plane, then you need to fly less expensive planes. This is a VERY hard reality for most of us normal, working class types. That being said, I'm not going to say, plan to lose every plane, but if you have to be so careful that it's no fun, then get a slower, simpler plane, and LOVE it...don't get into something that's going to bankrupt you (BTW not saying you, I'm saying it generically). This is something we talk about a lot, and hope people are listening. Most people don't listen to my WHOLE message, and I get it, but it's frustrating to be "held accountable" for NOT saying what I DO say, when many just really aren't listening to me say it. Does this make sense to you?
It does take the sting out of a big crash when you have many planes, and no $ tied up in them. I would have to stop flying for months to rebound from that :) 4Min on a 5000 is pushing it on twin 70's ...I just got a J-11 Great video !
Sure, ONE plane...maybe, but I'll be working for an entire lifetime to pay for what you see on this channel.
You probably aren't looking at the numbers correctly, so I will give you some slack...but I can assure you we're over a million dollars deep in this extravaganza, and not by a few bucks, hundreds of thousands over and much of it borrowed.
We will have to do this for decades JUST to hope to catch up, if we ever do. I could have paid cash for every single item we've ever reviewed, and come out WAY ahead. Remember, we've got 10 years of our lives invested into this...not just "free time" - we make time. My WHOLE family puts up with this...not just our 4 kids, but my extended family. We are ballz deep in this, and it's not for the faint of heart.
Enjoying the hobby as a "pass time" is where it's at. Don't think anything else.
Hope this message is well received, and you get where I'm coming from - not trying to be mean, just want to help you understand a little bit better. I could spend 3-4 days just going over the details of what and how we did what we did and are doing, and will be doing to get into a situation to "take the sting out of a crash"...

I just purchased this model and I have some questions about centering.
apart from the recoil of the battery, did you put weight on the rear to obtain the correct VG?
Should it be centered at 145 mm with the landing gear extended or retracted?

Center of Gravity should be as marked in the manual, but I do not have that off the top of my head, however, we do share this in our UNBOX, BUILD, and RADIO SETUP (another video in this playlist - FYI).
As for adding weight, I didn't. The Battery is used to make the CG work out. If you need more weight than the battery can make up, I'd suggest making the battery move more BACK, if necessary, by removing foam, or changing the location of the Receiver, if and when possible. Adding dead weight will make this already heavy plane loose a lot of fun ;)
As for gear up or down...I always suggest with GEAR DOWN. You want to fly a plane, and NEED to land it, so get the CG right with gear down...ready to land, BUT in the manual calls it out differently, you'll want to take note. I don't recall a plane that called for gear UP for CG in all the years we've done this channel.

I wonder if I was using a 7000mah last time - if so, DANG IT...but honestly, it wasn't so far off, but I was really wailing on it for this flight. I only caught one missile rail this time, and it that would have popped off, I bet I could have gotten her down on the strip ;(.... oh well, fly, crash, repeat - still loved this plane, so it did kinda hurt a bit.

I have found that with my efds in some cases increasing the size of the battery adds weight and that cancels out the length increase of the flight.
Maybe your just having bad luck with the communists planes..just saying.

I think you might like trying SMC high voltage batteries. I have four of them and they are the best batteries I’ve ever had. All four are 6S, two 6200s and two 5300s. My philosophy is send it! fly it like you stole it and put it away sweating from the experience. Lol honestly, if people aren’t flying like you do Brian, then they aren’t really flying lol.

That sucks. I always use a 6200 in my Su-30. 5000 is just too marginal. I set timer for 3.5 min and RESPECT that time. I always land with enough reserve and that's with a go-around or two.
If i use SMC HVLi 6200 packs then i will go 4 min on the timer but no more.
These twin 70s are not forgiving with timer inattention.

Yes, and I think I set this timer in the COLD WEATHER...and this was a HOT DAY....DANG IT!!!! I should have adjusted it a BIT, but also, this particular lipo has had a long and rough life ;(

We have reached out, and just haven't connected yet. This is a good idea, and we hope to investigate this for some of the more demanding TWINS, like this and the Arrows F-15 which is also a battery chewer.
When I saw you go past 3 mins flight time I was starting to get worried, when you got to three and a half I was screeming land, land now. !!!!!!, no land on the house drive, oh sh............ . If you took out the air brake servo and gear , save the weight and go to a non smart 7000 mah 50c or similar lipo weighing the same or 50gms more than the now duff Spektrum smart lipo you might get the 4 mins ! If you go hv is the J11 esc hv capable ? perhaps leaving about 12% left in the battery will reduce the chance of puffing ?
I wonder if I set my timer to 4 minutes when it was cooler, and possibly I WAS using the 7000mAh 6S, and I just had forgotten, like an idiot still...BUT, it made for a fun video of my suffering - LOL ;)

100% - It's embarrassing to screw the pooch like this, but if I'm gonna lose a beauty, I want to help others avoid loosing theirs ;) This plane is just plain amazing, but it is a BATTERY CHEWER!!! Twin 70's might just need TWO batteries, so we can drain them more like other planes. I wonder if I'd have to run the Rx on a THIRD, smaller Rx pack?

@@BrianPhillipsRC It does have Reflex V2. I'm definitely not going to be doing any maneuvers for at least the first year! Since I'm a newbie to flying RC.... I just love a smooth flight and a nice landing. I just ordered the AR620 from your link so that I can have that option available if I decide to go that route, which it sounds like I will.
I still have to maiden the blue 182 and the Green 1800 Ranger so the Beaver is 3rd in line. I've been flying my smaller ones to get my skills up.

@@RCTaxi-dr7sh I just crashed my FMS Ranger today pretty hard as I am a newbie total beginner flying it RTF with the supplied radio and I took it off by myself with my instructor standing next to me no buddy box, just watching and not really giving me any instructions as I guess I was doing OK up to that point for the most part. Got bored with pattern flying and figure 8's and said I wanna work on landings and on my first approach came in too hot and since I have never done any simulator and this was like my 5th flight ever, I for whatever boneheaded reason shoved the elevator stick forward and nose dived it into the ground in like 1.5 seconds. Sickening feeling. I think it will all be OK with some hot glue and or ca or other adhesives and live to fly again. Just really loved the plane and bummed it's in pieces now but I also know it's part of the hobby and won't be the last one, of that I am sure. I also have the blue FMS 1400 Sky Trainer 182 new in box for later and recently picked up both an Arrows Trekker and a 1450 mm Tecnam 2010 so I have other options as well. Congrats on the 1800 Ranger. I may look to add that down the road as I am a huge top wing Cessna style trainer fan. They are so nice to fly. Good luck and Happy Landings.

Life happens....you know if you don't ever crash, you're not flying, which might be a bit of a cop-out, but some truth too it. If this was my only plane, I'd fly so much more conservatively.
I just spend the better part of the night, and last part of last night, on an extension ladder, fully extended into a tree, with my "stick of shame" paired up with a broom handle, helping my friend, Esteban, who crashed a Maule in that SAME tree, about 4/5 way up!!! Now that's NOT fun, but it is a tradeoff, and what makes a greasy, delicious landing worth it all! When we fly, there's always a certain amount of risk, difficulty, skill, JUST beyond what we had yesterday, and even as you advance through the ranks of RC skills, and get better and better, THIS can still happen! That's just one small part of what makes it all so sweet! I mean, it sucks to lose a beauty, like the J-11, but it helps form our very REAL experience. This can't be understated. We aren't playing video games, and we're not just watching a cool video - we're REALLY flying a REAL plane, only small in these real circumstances!
You know how they say, "it's the SPICE of life" - difficulty, heart ache, let downs ;)

Sadly this flight didn't end very well but repair is possible and once in the air, where it looks so gorgeous, you won't see a little dent.

Yeah, it's painful to lose a beauty, but she IS fixable, and only got nose damage...really, she will fly again. Everything works, except the nose gear door, and only since it broke one of the two necessary pivot rings.

That is a big bummer. But, I really appreciate you taking the time to explain what was happening, real time. And even though there may have been some "colorful metaphors" used off camera after the crash, you remained calm and handled the aftermath in a way that sets a good example. I get really PO'd at myself, when I make some mistake that causes a less than perfect(😊) landing. But, I tend to refer back to your example for flying- and crashing- in those moments. And I hope other viewers do, too.

Thanks! It's tough to lose them in such a dumb way, but it's kinda part of the hobby. I'd love to have larger safety margins on lipo power for TWINS like this, but as mentioned in the video, they're pretty much gonna be battery chewers, and they don't give much grace when you get to or over the timer...in this case, I must have set my timer for a 7000mAh pack, or I was flying on a COOOOOOOLD day, which might have been the difference! Now that I mention that out loud, I will look into this. Heat changes the times, and can do so somewhat significantly. It WAS COLDER!!! I had a coat on that day!!!!!!!!!!!!! And I wasn't pushing the time, since I had just lost the SU-27 due to a mfg defect on the linkage!
Dang it, that's almost certainly what happened. I was using the timer for a cool day, and it was NOT a cool day, thus I lost a small percentage of battery life, and this is how it ended - one BRANCH reached out and grabbed my missile rail, and flipped an already slow moving plane into a FLAP SPIN (not flat ...flap, like flap jacks - LOL), and then the rest is history - Ohhhh well.
Gotta say though - What a LOOKER! This plane steals the show with it's looks. Now how to get it NOT to eat my packs for breakfast - maybe some SMC HiVoltage packs???

Good point on your earlier reply, Brian. Cold day Vs Hot day may have made a few seconds of difference. Those seconds allowed for that evil tree branch to get in touch with its inner Womping Willow (probably trademarked- sorry JK😊) and reach out to snatch that beautiful J-11 right out of the sky 👍🏼

Yep, EDF is 1 thing I always use telemetry on, bcz I wanna squeeze every sec of joy out of short available flight by setting beep @ 3V each cell & not @ 3min timer.
U got lucky it didn't get stuck above tree. But I was surprised u attempted against the wind landing in mayday situation.
Just as u lost power, all u had to do was to bank left & that would've not only avoided the tree but also slipped plane r8 above the road, & dropped altitude down to touch down level too, then all u would need would be just 1 rudder input to align nose to runway & flare, and lastly take a looooong 1km walk to bring it back - which u didn't want !!!!

Brian what about having x2 4000 6s lipos in parallel but evenly spaced out? Maybe one in the air brake area and one in the battery bay? I'm sure the airframe can handle it if the CG is close.
I was thinking just to plop them up front, but NOT in parallel - split the ESC's apart, so that when and if you lose a motor, you'll only lose one...but this plane is already heavy, and I bet ONE EDF would result in a crash either way...who knows, I just don't want to puff 100C packs, especially GOOD packs.
Still, just pilot error, after all, and possibly exacerbated by GETTING AFTER HER at the beginning of the flight...I was being pretty aggressive compared to my normal flight style with EDF jets.

That's an amazingly detailed plane and looks even better in the air. It's tough to experience the agony of defeat, but at least it was of your doing. My last two crashed was the fault of my very popular and extremely over priced receiver...very frustrating!!
Yeah, I'll take a self induced crash any day over that type of failure! I've only had maybe 3-4 Radio failures in all my time flying so many planes, so I consider myself very fortunate in that regard.
Jeez, making me afraid to fly my Eflite SU-30 70mm again. 😅
They are fun to fly, but you have to respect the flight time. I don't fly any of my 6s jets over 3 minutes, just to be safe and preserve my batteries
Crashed my FMS BAE Hawk on maiden last week. Complete epic carnage. Salvaged the gear and edf esc and all of the servos and parts. Got spares for my next bae. Oh and yesterday I got in a hurry to land my eflite twin 64 a10 and forgot to put the gear down😂. Basically no damage from the grass belly landing. Not even a scratch except two ordnance pulled out at the glue joint. 30 second fix. Stupid huh? Lol
That is CRAZY!!! No damage, except a couple rail adapters - you lucky dog!!!!
This J-11 was one missile rail hooked on a branch - DANG IT!!! Oh well, makes for fun content, watching others crash stuff, I guess ;)

We’ve all been there Brian, EDF’s teach you discipline for flight times and I always keep the last minute in reserve. I often land with 45% plus but just throw the battery into a STOL plane or similiar to finish them at storage. Hey 1st world problems right 😅
WOW - you'd only be flying for 1.5 -2 minutes on this plane (to land with 45%+ left) !!! That's one of my major complaints with TWIN EDF's. I just flew 24.5+ minutes on a single 4S 4000mAh 30C smart pack in my 1800mm Ranger (video coming soon for the Ranger 1.8m, not this PARTICULAR flight), which was AMAZING, and it was JUST starting to alarm from my voltage alarm. I want more time in these jets...and if you take too much time, or push too hard, you too might give a tree a "high Five" and end up in the ditch like I did - Live and learn, I guess :)
@@BrianPhillipsRC I’ve got the blue sister SU27 and go 3.50 on a 4 min timer with very conservative throttle on a 100 c /5000 and I’m averaging 35-45% as I said. It why I’m migrating to turbines. Yep my big Carbon Cub is like the Ranger, floats around forever. Keep up the great vids- we love them👍

I kinda want to try an SMC pack to see if the Higher voltage pack makes a difference. I bet the couple extra volts would help a LOT, although, I could just land with time to spare too - but honestly, where's the fun in that??!?!?! LOL ;)

I love the 3s 2200mAh in my Ultrix 600mm... and the 4s 2200mAh in my Viper 50mm... but just not interested in 6s spektrum packs.. i get you have to sell the products.. but .. maybe smc off cam ?
I use voltage callouts on my jets every 20 seconds. I realize you don’t want the extra background noise but I and most of your watchers don’t mind. I’m actually interested in what the battery voltage vs flight time is. Thanks for the videos, even the ones with difficult outcomes.

I would LOVE to have mAh call-outs! that would be sweet! Plug in how large the pack is, and calculate a percentage for safety margin, and that would be perfect!
These transmitters have a minijack for audio out. A single ear bud could be telling you whatever you want to know, and Megan’s mic will not hear it. Having that receiver and capability and not using it makes no sense. Fly smart.

Typical of garbage and overpriced Spektrum batteries, they are some of the worst performers on the battery load test comparisons on rcgroups. Sorry for the loss Brian, maybe it's time to switch to premium batteries for your edf's, such as SMC, Admiral, Roaring Top, CNHL G+, or Gens Ace/Tattu.

CG is the reason why this plane kills batteries, not the twin fan setup. I added 170g of weight to mine, which made it much tail heavier than the book CG, and it flew more agile, cruised at lower throttle, and left my batteries warm rather than scalding hot. still flyable without gyro too. But it was a lot of modification work to get there

I love small warbirds.. I have two old mini birds. I have a GWS Spitfire and a corsair from alfa models. I love flying low and fast. I think both are over ten years old. Never been damage. I often flying my midwest hotts 2, powered by a O.S 46fx. that plane I have flown for over 20 years. I fly my planes at the edge, inverted and scraping the horizontal rudder at the runway. I don't get it, that people crash so often. One of my theory is that people don't have time to get known with the model, before they fly the heck of it. 😂😂. I only owned one edf jet. It was a J-10, it did fly so bad, that i gave it away.
You're assessment is true for me for sure, since we do fly so many planes, like you said, I can't get really familiar with them. This is definitely a double edged sward. I love flying lots of new planes, but you really get to know a plane after loads of flying...that is if you don't do stupid things like run them out of battery and/or crash them into trees - LOL/cry
