I actually agree with you. People having a major influx of immigration changes the culture. As long as you have good immigrants who adapt and become part of the culture that's okay. But I don't want immigrants coming and breaking the law and trying to change the culture. That's not okay.

Well the current temporary foreign workers (I can’t bring myself to say immigrants since none of us are expected to settle down, have a family and become members of Japanese society)
all receive minimum wage anyway. The exception might be English teachers and elder care staff.
Minimum wage here is very low anyway so unless they
are brought over on the terrible foreign worker trainee program (which is basically modern slavery ) the majority will get minimum wage or close to it.

    • @posemwen

The minimum wage was increased in the US so actually pay got better. The problem is inflation made things more expensive so the better pay doesn’t do much but that’s not because of immigration in the US.

I am a Canadian living in Japan and have been here 29 years.
Personally I don’t think Japan can handle more immigration unless they continue to make it unnattractive for migrant workers to have families here.
The only path forward unfortunately is to continue to have migrant workers/student workers to fill in the cracks.
And to be clear : as a permanent resident retaining his Canadian citizen I don’t consider myself an immigrant.
For Japan I believe the definition of immigrants should be, those who are in the process of becoming citizens.
Otherwise we are all expected to “go home” one day.
Japan does not want immigrants. Japan wants temporary foreign workers.
And that’s the only thing that will work here. For everyone.

As an American who worked in Japan on a highly skilled worker visa, I can say that Japan absolutely needs foreign workers; they just need to be selective about who they bring in. Japanese tech companies are far behind on talent because universities in Japan have been slow to adopt to needs of the broader global market. The same is true in finance, manufacturing, and other sectors. Japanese companies need to learn from foreign workers' experience, skills, and work culture so they can abandon the older methods that are holding Japanese firms back.
Similarly, there are smaller tradesmen organization that are desperate for young talent because Japanese youth don't want to get into carpentry and skilled manual labor professions in the inaka.
So Japan would greatly benefit from focusing a lot on the skills of the people that they bring into the country; not just on bringing cheap labor.

Here's my concern for this immigration plan:
The pay for work in Japan will be lower than it would be in the States. So Japan will likely have a hard time attracting quality immigrants. The ones who will work for super cheap may be from high-crime countries and low-trust societies. It wouldn't be worth the cheap labor if it also leads to lots of worthless people draining social services, increasing crime, and bringing in cultures that causes who knows what kinds of social problems in Japan. We have seen stuff like this in the States and throughout Europe.
Hopefully Japan's leadership will recognize this and be very particular about who they let in.

You can't pick and choose what people you like to have as a lower member of your society with all the benefits to your county and lower benefits to those people though. The "high quality immigrants" you mentioned who are willing to work "super cheap" are only going to come from high crime countries. Why? because they are desperate for a better life. Why would anyone leave to another country, without knowing anybody, without understanding the language and culture, to get paid significantly less than the rest of the population if their home country was better? The problem is that people will believe everything they see on TV, specially the bad and disingenuous publicity from the US and Europe who continuously use immigrants as scape goats for the problems they themselves create

Minasan konnichiwa! A random Russian here.
I don't know for now, but some time ago Russia took 2nd position in the world (between USA and Germany) by immigration. People were mainly coming from the other former Soviet republics. And judging not only from the Russian experience but also that of Sweden, Germany, USA I can conclude the following.
It feels like the governments opted for the easiest and "less expensive" solution. Why spend extra resources and money on ur own people if you can "import" someone who's gonna work for literal pennies and make many children regardless the income 😹 and often there's no social adaptation, because it's expensive. Sweden previously had a serious program of social adaptation, but their government canceled it in the past. And several decades later they opened borders so much that within 5 years their southern port cities changed their ethnic composition by 30%.
Beware, Japan! It's a dangerous route! In your place guys I would protest and make the government solve the well-being issues. It may be not money alone. Working hours, psychological climate and so on.

But western countries quietly allow (illegal) immigrants into their territory, despite the opposition of their electoral bases. Pretty desperate, right? Western countries also happily recruit nurses, doctors & critical workers from the poorest of countries, fully aware of the harm they are doing by creating a brain drain. For sure, Japan needs more guest workers. Not troublesome people who are going to bring their religion, politics & customs to this country.

As far as importing workers… absolutely, Japan should! And not just skilled workers. Absolutely not. The people who work hard and make it to another country without being able to pay for extremely expensive (oftentimes) post-secondary education are the salt of the earth. Immigrants who were born with relative silver spoons are not what make places truly great to live in. As long as the government makes sure workers aren’t abused. And as long as the government itself does not abuse immigrants.
Japan needs immigrants who are truly grateful to live in Japan. It doesn’t need people who just come to have a bit of fun and then ghost out back to their homeland. I mean, sure, those people are OK, but they aren’t what will save Japan from the shortage it is facing.

The problem is that Japan and 6 other nations are caught in the crossfire with China right now.
The policies are there to move things around in a way that isn’t economically risky, but it is slowing the process if Japan is not willing to take risks and speak Western languages.
The West will learn Asian languages to protect ally nations from China’s attack. And India, the nation that Journey to the West references, is targeted by China and it will not look good if troops are going to be sent to a land too massive that it could lead to war disasters.
The land can be a massive trap to our troops and we cannot take that amount of loss anymore than we already have in our nations. Repopulation is the final frontier and it needs to happened sooner than the attacks from China.

So that's bad news. Japan will be destroyed. That's a fact because that's what happened to Singapore and other countries that allowed in many foreign workers & expats that bring their families. There'll be more homeless Japanese people who cannot find jobs. More grads will fail to find jobs. Foreign & local companies will hire cheaper foreigners than local grads. Today, foreigners working in 7-11s and Family Mart & some hotels are already behaving badly. I don't like eating Japanese food prepared by non-Japanese in Japan. I don't like non-Japanese cashiers in Japan.

Everyone is making a huge deal about this immigration thing as if it really makes a big difference. Because of Japan's own poor choices, especially with the birth rate, Japan, as we know, will cease to exist and be successful invaded (probably by Chinese) either way unless a miracle happens and they straighten out.
And can we stop making this U.S or U.K with Japan comparison? Japan is not compatible into being in anything close to the situation with those 2 especially the U.S.

I doubt the tax breaks for those that have children would be so great that they are living a better life than those that didn't have children, just balancing things out a little.

You're right about the birthrate; there's no fixing it. The costs of living are only increasing with each passing year. The world is just going to adjust to having a lower population. Over time there will only be rich and pretty people left, right? Less people means less production but less people also means less people needing resources. The only major issues I'm seeing here are the lack of a pension system being funded for old people and cultures are going to change drastically or go extinct. Japan is going to become very different and deal with real crime rates like what we have in the US/UK.
